Fiducial-Free Alignment Verification Techniques For Intracranial Radiosurgery, Kenneth Matthew Williams
Fiducial-Free Alignment Verification Techniques For Intracranial Radiosurgery, Kenneth Matthew Williams
Theses Digitization Project
This thesis serves as the basis for a method using image registration to automate patient alignment in an effort to eliminate the dependency on the fiducial markers as well as improve the accuracy efficiency of the alignment process. Proton beams are an external beam modality of radiation therapy that can be used effectively for radiosurgical applications due to the dosimetry advantage of the Bragg peak. The Bragg peak is a phenomenon exploited by proton beam therapy to concentrate the effect of the beams on the tumor while minimizing damage to critical structures and other health tissues within the patient.

A Resolution Procedure For Description Logics With Nominal Schemas, Cong Wang, Pascal Hitzler
A Resolution Procedure For Description Logics With Nominal Schemas, Cong Wang, Pascal Hitzler
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
We present a polynomial resolution-based decision procedure for the recently introduced description logic ELHOVn(⊓), which features nominal schemas as new language construct. Our algorithm is based on ordered resolution and positive superposition, together with a lifting lemma. In contrast to previous work on resolution for description logics, we have to overcome the fact that ELHOVn(⊓) does not allow for a normalization resulting in clauses of globally limited size.

Number Of Information And Its Relation To The Cosmological Constant Resulting From Landauer’S Principle, Ioannis Gkigkitzis, Ioannis Haranas, Samantha Kirk
Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Using a recent published formula for the number of information N that results from Landauer’s principle we obtain an expression for the cosmological constant Λ . Next, assuming the universe as a system of mass M satisfying Landauer’s principle and eliminating its mass M from the given expression for the number of information, we obtain a new expression that agrees with the one derived by Lloyd. Furthermore, we modify the generalized entropy relation and three equivalent entropy expressions are obtained. Finally, in two different universes the time rate of change of the entropy is calculated. In a flat universe the …

Further Evidence Of The Contribution Of The Ear Canal To Directional Hearing: Design Of A Compensating Filter, Andrea Martelloni, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd, Antonio Mancuso
Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research
It has been proven, and it is well documented in literature, that the directional response in HRTFs comes largely from the effect of the pinnae. However, few studies have analysed the contribution given by the remaining part of the external ear, particularly the ear canal. This work investigates the directionally dependent response of the modelled ear canal of a dummy head, assuming that the behaviour of the external ear is sufficiently linear to be approximated by an LTI system. In order to extract the ear canal's transfer function, two critical microphone placements (at the eardrum and at the beginning of …

Security Risks And Protection In Online Learning: A Survey, Yong Chen, Wu He
Distance Learning Faculty & Staff Publications
This paper describes a survey of online learning which attempts to determine online learning providers' awareness of potential security risks and the protection measures that will diminish them. The authors use a combination of two methods: blog mining and a traditional literature search. The findings indicate that, while scholars have identified diverse security risks and have proposed solutions to mitigate the security threats in online learning, bloggers have not discussed security in online learning with great frequency. The differences shown in the survey results generated by the two different methods confirm that online learning providers and practitioners have not considered …

A Hybrid Approach To Finding Relevant Social Media Content For Complex Domain Specific Information Needs, Delroy H. Cameron, Amit P. Sheth, Nishita Jaykumar, Gaurish Anand, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Gary Alan Smith
Kno.e.sis Publications
While contemporary semantic search systems offer to improve classical keyword-based search, they are not always adequate for complex, domain specific information needs. Some complex search situations require knowledge of both ontological concepts as well as 'intelligible constructs' not typically modeled in ontologies. Intelligible constructs convey essential information, which may be important to the holistic information needs of information seekers. Such constructs may include notions of intensity, frequency, interval, dosage, emotion, sentiment, equivalence, synonymy, negation, parts-of-speech, etc. However, few search systems utilize both structured background knowledge (ontologies) and the aforementioned knowledge for query interpretation in domain specific searches. Instead, there is …

School Choice As A One-Sided Matching Problem: Cardinal Utilities And Optimization, Sinan Aksoy, Alexander Adam Azzam, Chaya Coppersmith, Julie Glass, Gizem Karaali, Xueying Zhao, Xinjing Zhu
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
The school choice problem concerns the design and implementation of matching mechanisms that produce school assignments for students within a given public school district. Previously considered criteria for evaluating proposed mechanisms such as stability, strategyproofness and Pareto efficiency do not always translate into desirable student assignments. In this note, we explore a class of one-sided, cardinal utility maximizing matching mechanisms focused exclusively on student preferences. We adapt a well-known combinatorial optimization technique (the Hungarian algorithm) as the kernel of this class of matching mechanisms. We find that, while such mechanisms can be adapted to meet desirable criteria not met by …
Designing A Framework For Exchanging Partial Sets Of Bim Information On A Cloud-Based Service, Alan Redmond
Designing A Framework For Exchanging Partial Sets Of Bim Information On A Cloud-Based Service, Alan Redmond
Doctoral
The rationale behind this research study was based on the recognised difficulty of exchanging data at element or object level due to the inefficiencies of compatible hardware and software. Interoperability depicts the need to pass data between applications, allowing multiple types of experts and applications to contribute to the work at hand. The only way that software file exchanges between two applications can produce consistent data and change management results for large projects is through a building model repository. The overall aim of this thesis was to design and develop an integrated process that would advance key decisions at an …
Characterization And Visualization Of Sophisticated Scanning Attacks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Robert F. Erbacher
Characterization And Visualization Of Sophisticated Scanning Attacks, Maggie Xiaoyan Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Robert F. Erbacher
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Detection of sophisticated stealthy network scans requires analyzing large amounts of network data collected over long periods of time. The sheer volume of the data prohibits efficient detection from a pure algorithmic approach. However timely detection of such sophisticated scanning attacks is critical since the attacker employing these approaches is usually well-resourced and potentially can bring high impact to the network than a naive attacker can. To detect such sophisticated scans, we propose the integration of algorithmic detection and visualization for human detection to simultaneously optimize computational complexity and human analyst time. The proposed approach provides real world detection capabilities …
Simultaneous Routing And Multiplexing In Ad Hoc Networks With Mimo Links, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Xiaochun Cheng
Simultaneous Routing And Multiplexing In Ad Hoc Networks With Mimo Links, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Xiaochun Cheng
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper addresses how to leverage the spatial multiplexing function of MIMO links to improve wireless network throughput. Wireless interference modeling of a half-duplex MIMO node is presented, based on which, routing, spatial multiplexing and scheduling are jointly considered in one optimization model. A linear program-based algorithm is proposed for the joint optimization, and numerical simulation results show that the joint optimization of routing with spatial-temporal multiplexing is superior to the separate design approaches, including separating routing from the other two designs, and separating scheduling from the other two designs. © 2013 IEEE.

Optimization Of Object Queries On Collections Using Annotations For The String Valued Attributes, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay K. Madria, Thomas Weigert
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Object oriented programming languages raised the level of abstraction by supporting the explicit first-class query constructs in the programming codes. The query constructs can be optimized by leveraging the techniques of query optimization from the domain of databases. The existing optimization approaches such as JQL, however, incur high run time overhead as optimizations are performed only at run time. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an approach that performs the query optimization at compile time utilizing the metadata annotations in the source code. The proposed approach first collects the data from the sample execution of the program and extracts the …

Traffic Analytics Using Probabilistic Graphical Models Enhanced With Knowledge Bases, Pramod Anantharam, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
Graphical models have been successfully used to deal with uncertainty, incompleteness, and dynamism within many domains. These models built from data often ignore preexisting declarative knowledge about the domain in the form of ontologies and Linked Open Data (LOD) that is increasingly available on the web. In this paper, we present an approach to leverage such 'top-down' domain knowledge to enhance 'bottom-up' building of graphical models. Specifically, we propose three operations on the graphical model structure to enrich it with nodes, edges, and edge directions. We illustrate the enrichment process using traffic data from 511.org and declarative knowledge from ConceptNet. …

Advancing Data Reuse In Phyloinformatics Using An Ontology-Driven Semantic Web Approach, Maryam Panahiazar, Amit P. Sheth, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Rutger Vos, Jim Leebens-Mack
Kno.e.sis Publications
Phylogenetic analyses can resolve historical relationships among genes, organisms or higher taxa. Understanding such relationships can elucidate a wide range of biological phenomena, including, for example, the importance of gene and genome duplications in the evolution of gene function, the role of adaptation as a driver of diversification, or the evolutionary consequences of biogeographic shifts. Phyloinformaticists are developing data standards, databases and communication protocols (e.g. Application Programming Interfaces, APIs) to extend the accessibility of gene trees, species trees, and the metadata necessary to interpret these trees, thus enabling researchers across the life sciences to reuse phylogenetic knowledge. Specifically, Semantic Web …
