In this paper, we present Twitris, a semantic Web application that facilitates browsing for news and information, using social perceptions as the fulcrum. In doing so we address challenges in large scale crawling, processing of real time information, and preserving spatio-temporal-thematic properties central to observations pertaining to real time events. We extract metadata about events from Twitter and bring related news and Wikipedia articles to the user. In developing Twitris, we have used the DBPedia ontology.
Snoop-Forge-Replay Attack On Continuous Verification With Keystrokes, Khandaker Abir Rahman
Snoop-Forge-Replay Attack On Continuous Verification With Keystrokes, Khandaker Abir Rahman
Doctoral Dissertations
We present a new attack called the snoop-forge-replay attack on the keystroke-based continuous verification systems. We performed the attacks on two levels – 1) feature-level and 2) sample-level.
(1) Feature-level attack targets specific keystroke-based continuous verification method or system. In feature-level attacks, we performed a series of experiments using keystroke data from 50 users who typed approximately 1200 to 2300 keystrokes of free text during three different periods. The experiments consisted of two parts. In the first part, we conducted zero-effort verification experiments with two verifiers ("R" and "S") and obtained Equal Error Rates (EERs) between 10% and 15% under …

Autonomous drones are employed with ever-increasing frequency in applications ranging from search and rescue, detection of forest fires, and battlefield/civilian surveillance. In this paper, we study the effects of limited mobility in such mobile sensor platforms, from the perspective of the effect limited mobility has on coverage effectiveness. We define a problem that we call Exploratory Coverage in Limited Mobility Sensor Networks, wherein the objective is to move a number of mobile sensors to fully explore (and hence, sense every point in) a target area in order to detect any critical event that has already occurred in the area. Further, …

An Efficient Trust Propagation Scheme For Predicting Trustworthiness Of Service Providers In Service-Oriented Social Networks, Yu Xu, Jianxun Liu, Mingdong Tang, Xiaoqing Frank Liu
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Perception of trustworthiness of service providers is a fundamental need in service selection. Trust propagation has been used to predict trustworthiness of service providers in service-oriented social networks. However, existing trust propagation methods may suffer from a scalability problem, i.e., their computation time is likely too high to be acceptable in practice, especially when they are applied to very large-scale service-oriented social networks. Moreover, they rarely consider the structural properties of social networks to optimize their performance. This paper proposes an efficient trust propagation scheme for predicting trust in service-oriented social networks. It exploits the specific structural properties of social …

Designers typically interact with products during the early stages of design to gain an understanding of the solution space. However, few studies have been conducted to understand how these practices affect idea generation which thereby limits our understanding of the utility of these methods. Therefore, the current study was conducted to understand designer-product interactions in order to develop recommendations for their use during the design process.

Bridging The Gap Between Fun And Fitness: Instructional Techniques And Real-World Applications For Full-Body Dance Games, Emiko Charbonneau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Full-body controlled games offer the opportunity for not only entertainment, but education and exercise as well. Refined gameplay mechanics and content can boost intrinsic motivation and keep people playing over a long period of time, which is desirable for individuals who struggle with maintaining a regular exercise program. Within this gameplay genre, dance rhythm games have proven to be popular with game console owners. Yet, while other types of games utilize story mechanics that keep players engaged for dozens of hours, motion-controlled dance games are just beginning to incorporate these elements. In addition, this control scheme is still young, only …

Towards An Early Software Estimation Using Log-Linear Regression And A Multilayer Perceptron Model, Ali Bou Nassif, Nfa-Estimation, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Software estimation is a tedious and daunting task in project management and software development. Software estimators are notorious in predicting software effort and they have been struggling in the past decades to provide new models to enhance software estimation. The most critical and crucial part of software estimation is when estimation is required in the early stages of the software life cycle where the problem to be solved has not yet been completely revealed. This paper presents a novel log-linear regression model based on the use case point model (UCP) to calculate the software effort based on use case diagrams. …

Eef-Cas: An Effort Estimation Framework With Customizable Attribute Selection, Katarina Grolinger, Besa Muslimi, Miriam A.M. Capretz, Mark Benko
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Existing estimation frameworks generally provide one-size-fits-all solutions that fail to produce accurate estimates in most environments. Research has shown that the accomplishment of accurate effort estimates is a long-term process that, above all, requires the extensive collection of effort estimation data by each organization. Collected data is generally characterized by a set of attributes that are believed to affect the development effort. The attributes that most affect development effort vary widely depending on the type of product being developed and the environment in which it is being developed. Thus, any new estimation framework must offer the flexibility of customizable attribute …

Software developers require information to understand the characteristics of systems, such as complexity and maintainability. In order to further understand and determine characteristics of object-oriented (OO) systems, this paper describes research that identifies attributes that are valuable in determining the difficulty in implementing changes during maintenance, as well as the possible effects that such changes may produce. A set of metrics are proposed to quantify and measure these attributes. The proposed complexity metrics are used to determine the difficulty in implementing changes through the measurement of method complexity, method diversity, and complexity density. The paper establishes impact metrics to determine …

Accurate software development effort estimation is critical to the success of software projects. Although many techniques and algorithmic models have been developed and implemented by practitioners, accurate software development effort prediction is still a challenging endeavor in the field of software engineering, especially in handling uncertain and imprecise inputs and collinear characteristics. In this paper, a hybrid intelligent model combining a neural network model integrated with fuzzy model (neuro-fuzzy model) has been used to improve the accuracy of estimating software cost. The performance of the proposed model is assessed by designing and conducting evaluation with published project and industrial data. …

The recent years have seen an increase in interest for knowledge repositories that are useful across applications, in contrast to the creation of ad hoc or application-specific databases.
These knowledge repositories figure as a central provider of unambiguous identifiers and semantic relationships between entities. As such, these shared entity descriptions serve as a common vocabulary to exchange and organize information in different formats and for different purposes. Therefore, there has been remarkable interest in systems that are able to automatically tag textual documents with identifiers from shared knowledge repositories so that the content in those documents is described in a …
Nonlinear Granger Causality And Its Application In Decoding Of Human Reaching Intentions, Mengting Liu
Nonlinear Granger Causality And Its Application In Decoding Of Human Reaching Intentions, Mengting Liu
Doctoral Dissertations
Multi-electrode recording is a key technology that allows the brain mechanisms of decision making, cognition, and their breakdown in diseases to be studied from a network perspective. As the hypotheses concerning the role of neural interactions in cognitive paradigms become increasingly more elaborate, the ability to evaluate the direction of neural interactions in neural networks holds the key to distinguishing their functional significance.
Granger Causality (GC) is used to detect the directional influence of signals between multiple locations. To extract the nonlinear directional flow, GC was completed through a nonlinear predictive approach using radial basis functions (RBF). Furthermore, to obtain …

The foreign-led processing trade is an important driving factor in the process of China's rapid economic growth. Since the reform and opening up, China's foreign trade is growing rapidly with the product structure upgrading. Even so, the products made in China are still the byword of the low quality. To a large extent, China's export structure is not due to the local enterprises improving the technical content of the export, but to the processing trade and foreign enterprises participation. More and more study is focusing on the export product quality analysis and its influencing factors. However, it also obscures the …

Efficient Clustering-Based Plagiarism Detection Using Ippdc, Anthony Ohmann
Efficient Clustering-Based Plagiarism Detection Using Ippdc, Anthony Ohmann
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
The volume of source code available on the Internet is astronomical. When seeking to detect cases of plagiarism, one must maintain a large database of known documents. This can lead to unacceptably slow runtimes for systems designed to detect cases of source code plagiarism. We seek to use partitional and density-based clustering as well as intelligent parallelism to improve VOCS, a plagiarism detection system. In addition, we will attempt to increase the system’s usability and usefulness by expanding its programming language support and building an intuitive web interface. Finally, we propose utilizing Program Dependence Graphs to construct a hybrid approach …
A Fuzzy Logic Approach To Collision Avoidance In Smart Uavs, Michelle Hromatka
A Fuzzy Logic Approach To Collision Avoidance In Smart Uavs, Michelle Hromatka
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
In recent years, there has been a rise in attention given to the issue of collision avoidance techniques for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Many approaches have been proposed but very few have been tested in high density, fixed speed test conditions. This approach successfully uses fuzzy logic to determine an appropriate avoidance maneuver after a possible collision is detected. Initially, fuzzy logic was also used to detect possible collisions, the reasons this level was removed from the final results are detailed within. This approach was chosen for its adaptability, ease of implementation, and robustness in dealing with questionable sensing techniques. …
A Spectral Alternative To K-Means Clustering For Graph Data, Becca Simon
A Spectral Alternative To K-Means Clustering For Graph Data, Becca Simon
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Producing meaningful clusterings for graph data requires the user to provide some insight to the program which he or she may not have regarding the data. The standard clustering algorithm, K-means, requires the user to specify k, the number of clusters to be produced by the algorithm. This paper discusses the recursivePartition algorithm, a recursive alternative to K-means clustering. The input to recursivePartition asks the user to specify n, the maximum size of any cluster. Using maximum cluster size and spectral methods based on the Laplacian matrix of the graph, recursivePartition has demonstrated an ability to produce highly …

Coding Theory-Based Cryptopraphy: Mceliece Cryptosystems In Sage, Christopher Roering
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Unlike RSA encryption, McEliece cryptosystems are considered secure in the presence of quantum computers. McEliece cryptosystems leverage error-correcting codes as a mechanism for encryption. The open-source math software Sage provides a suitable environment for implementing and exploring McEliece cryptosystems for undergraduate research. Using our Sage implementation, we explored Goppa codes, McEliece cryptosystems, and Stern’s attack against a McEliece cryptosystem.

Data Anonymization That Leads To The Most Accurate Estimates Of Statistical Characteristics, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich
Data Anonymization That Leads To The Most Accurate Estimates Of Statistical Characteristics, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
To preserve privacy, we divide the data space into boxes, and instead of original data points, only store the corresponding boxes. In accordance with the current practice, the desired level of privacy is established by having at least k different records in each box, for a given value k (the larger the value k, the higher the privacy level).
When we process the data, then the use of boxes instead of the original exact values leads to uncertainty. In this paper, we find the (asymptotically) optimal subdivision of data into boxes, a subdivision that provides, for a given statistical characteristic …

Decision Support In Data Centers For Sustainability, Michael Pawlish, Aparna Varde, Stefan Robila
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In this paper, we propose a decision support system (DSS) for the greening of data centers to help the environment, hence promoting sustainability. As society continues the relentless shift towards electronic communications there is a growing demand for greater storage and processing on data centers. A potential area of improvement is to gain greater server utilization rates since traditionally the phenomenon of 'server sprawl' occurs where more servers are added to the data center without seeking greater utilization rates on existing servers first. This implies maintaining more servers than actually needed that translates to greater carbon dioxide emissions causing potential …
Modeling Plaque Aggregation On The Neuronal Network, Thomas Howard
Modeling Plaque Aggregation On The Neuronal Network, Thomas Howard
Undergraduate Review
Alzheimer’s disease is a condition linked to plaque aggregation in the brain. Despite being the focus of many studies, current treatments are of questionable significance in the overall improvement of a patient’s condition. In recent years, computer models have been used to better understand complex biological systems and simulate the effects of various treatments. In the following paper we present a mathematical model studying the effects of plaque aggregation on the neuronal pathways of the human brain. To create our mathematical model we employ tools from the theory of dynamical systems and stochastic processes, and simulate the passage of a …

A Source Code Search Engine For Keyword Based Structural Relationship Search, Asheq Hamid
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
In an Object Oriented Program, we often see that a package contains several classes, a class contains several methods, a method calls other methods. We may say, there is a contains relationship between a package and a class or a calls relationship between two methods. We refer to these relationships as structural relationships. There may be other structural relationships apart from contains or calls in the source code. A software developer may sometime want to search for structural relationships within source code. She may prefer using Google like free form query to do so. To facilitate free form query based …

While the adoption of mobile devices has recently received research attention, there has been little research focusing on a specific application or service running in mobile devices. In this study, we examine the adoption of short message service (SMS) with the technology acceptance model. The model has been assessed with the data collected from 225 SMS users. Results from the partial least squares analysis show that perceived ease of use of SMS positively affects perceived usefulness of SMS and intention to adopt SMS, and perceived usefulness of SMS also positively affects intention to adopt SMS. Comparing the two factors, perceived …
