Ionic thermoelectric materials, for example, polyelectrolytes such as polystyrene sulfonate sodium (PSSNa), constitute a new class of materials which are attracting interest because of their large Seebeck coefficient and the possibility that they could be used in ionic thermoelectric SCs (ITESCs) and field effect transistors. However, pure polyelectrolyte membranes are not robust or flexible. In this paper, the preparation of ionic thermoelectric paper using a simple, scalable and cost-effective method is described. Conversion and utilization of greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) have become more and more significant to the sustainable development of the global economy. Among them, electrocarboxylation of organic substrates is an effective process. Under mild conditions such as ambient temperature and pressure, carbocations generated by electroreduction of organic substrates can react with CO2 into corresponding carboxylic acids. This paper introduces the recent progress of our group in electrochemical carboxylation, including electrocarboxylation of varies active organic substrates and asymmetric electrocarboxylation.

Electrochemical technique has been widely applied in the organic synthesis. This review focuses on the electrochemical synthesis of homoallylic alcohols and homoallylic amines from the allylation of carbonyl compounds and imines. This method has been developed impressively, especially in the field of electrochemical allylation in a green solvent of aqueous media. Improvement of the efficiency of the electricity, regio-selectivity and chiral synthesis are expected.

The titanium (Ti) based lead oxide (PbO2) electrodes doped with praseodymium oxide (Pr2O3) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were prepared by electrodeposition. The surface morphologies and structures of the as-prepared thin films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, respectively. The results showed that the denser and more uniform coatings with smaller particles and larger surfaces were obtained by doping, which modified the micro-structure of the Ti/SnO2-Sb2O3/Pr2O3-PVP-PbO2 electrode. The tin dioxide (SnO2) nanoparticles were synthesized by using a simple hydrothermal route in the presence of tetrapropyl ammonium bromide (TPAB) as a surfactant. Accordingly, the titanium mesh based SnO2 catalyst electrode was prepared. The morphologies and structures of SnO2 nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction spectrometry. The influences of reactant concentration, reaction temperature and time on the morphology of the products were investigated in detail. A new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system in aqueous solution was constructed by using meso-tetra(4-sulfophenyl)porphyrin (TSPP) as a luminophoreand potassium peroxydisulfate (K2S2O8) as a reductive–oxidative coreactant. Upon sweeping from 0 V to -1.5 V, two cathodic ECL peaks were found simultaneously. One appeared at -0.8 V, which is corresponding to the reduction of TSPP, another at -1.2 V, that is attributed to the reduction of K2S2O8. And methylene blue could quench the ECL of TSPP effectively. The characteristics and mechanism for the Simons electrochemical fluorination processes were investigated during the electrochemical fluorination of CH3SO2F to CF3SO2F. The results showed that the reaction mechanism for the electrochemical fluorination of organic compounds to organic fluorides was the same as that of chemical fluorination processes using fluorinating agents such as CoF3. The electrochemical fluorination in anhydrous HF was a heterogeneous process, and nickel fluorides on the surface of the nickel anode played the role of a mediator in the Simons process to transfer oxidation potential from the anode to …

To effectively recover redox catalyst and supporting electrolyte, a novel ternary composite consisting of ionic liquid-supported TEMPO, polymeric ionic-liquid and carbon black was prepared. The ionic-liquid supported redox catalyst TEMPO-IL-BF4 was firstly synthesized from 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl, and followed by the reaction of polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PDDA) and bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI) to form poly[diallyldimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide] (PDDA(Tf2N)). A combination of the above mentioned two synthesized materials and carbon black afforded to obtain the ternary composite, which was used as the recoverable supporting electrolyte and mediator for the electrochemical oxidation of alcohol. The electrodes of titanium based iridium tin oxides (IrSnOx) have been prepared by traditional thermal decomposition method and further applied to the electrosynthsis of 2,5-dichlorophenol in order to explore a green and high efficient synthesis route. The results showed that the electrode surface existed apparent cracks, while the intermediate layer prepared with Sn:Sb=94:6 existed less cracks and longer life time. The main products of the electrolytic reaction were 2,5-dichlorophenol, p-chlorophenol, and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. The electrosynthsis yield of 2,5-dichlorophenol reached 57% and the selectivity of 2,5-dichlorophenol was as high as 93% by using the IrSnOx as an anode, which is obviously better …

The electrochemical reduction of trivalent chromium ion (Cr3+) to Cr in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([BMIM]OAc)-H2O mixed electrolyte was investigated. The cyclic voltammograms showed that the electroreduction of Cr3+ in the mixed electrolyte occurred in a two-step process, namely, Cr3+ + e → Cr2+ and Cr2+ + 2e→ Cr0, controlled by the diffusion of Cr3+ to the electrode. The diffusion coefficient of Cr3+ was 1.2×10-8 cm2/s at 40 ℃ obtained by Rendle-Sevcik equation. Nuclear waste remediation and protein purification using immobilized metals can benefit enormously from the design and implementation of novel chelating nanomaterials. Available commercial resins capable of sequestering metals are based on bulk materials such as organic polymers, ceramics, and their composites. The use of two-dimensional nanoplatforms with large surface areas expands the horizon for the research and development of new systems with higher efficiency and lower cost. Fundamental science challenges remain in the synthesis and characterization of these nanomaterials and their integration with known or novel coordinating ligands.

Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) are an emerging polymeric material class for molecular sieving applications. This study focuses on PIM-1, an alternating copolymer of 5,5’,6,6’-tetrahydroxy-3,3’,3,3’-tetramethyl-1,1’-spirobisindane and tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile synthesized via nucleophilic aromatic substitution. PIM-1 been widely studied as a gas separating material and filtering membrane, but in this case, it is studied as a battery separator material. PIM-1’s microporous (pore diameters less than 2 nm) structure allows smaller favorable ions to transport while preventing larger ions and compounds from transporting. The process of aquarefining is an environmentally-friendly method for producing pure lead products that exhibit particularly low density. To observe the microstructures of these low-density forms of lead, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to examine aquarefined lead samples produced under three batches of processing conditions. Due to aquarefined lead's tendency to collapse under its own weight, careful measures were taken during transport and handling to avoid damaging the samples. Three types of microstructures were observed and correlated to changes in processing conditions: octahedron crystallites, microscales, and dendrites. Luminescent semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are extensively researched for use in biological applications. They have unique optical and physical properties that make them excellent candidates to replace conventional organic dyes for cellular labeling, multiplexing, nucleic acid detection, and as generalized probes. The primary focus of this dissertation was to utilize quantum dots for improvement in immunoassays. Specifically, atherosclerosis biomarkers were detected simultaneously in an effort to demonstrate advances in early detection diagnostics.

In 2012 the net world electricity generation was 21.56 trillion kilowatt hours. Photovoltaics only accounted for only 0.1 trillion kilowatt hours, less than 1 % of the total power. Lignin depolymerization represents a promising approach to the sustainable production of aromatic molecules. One potential approach to the stepwise depolymerization of lignin involves oxidation of the benzylic alcohol group in β-O-4 and β-1 linkages, followed by Baeyer–Villiger oxidation (BVO) of the resulting ketones and subsequent ester hydrolysis. Towards this goal, BVO reactions were performed on 2-adamantanone, a series of acetophenone derivatives, and lignin model compounds using a tin beta zeolite/hydrogen peroxide biphasic system. Bio-based polyol for rigid polyurethane (PU) foams and porous structured carbon as an electrode material for supercapacitors were synthesized from readily available biowaste precursor (orange peel) as an alternative to currently used petroleum-based starting materials. Synthesized bio-based polyols were characterized using FTIR, GPC, hydroxyl number, and viscosity measurements. These analyses indicated that intended bio-based polyol was obtained via thiol-ene chemistry with a high yield. Rigid PU foams prepared from bio-based polyol exhibited density around 35 kg/m3, maintained a regular cell structure with uniform cell distribution, closed cell content over 90%, and excellent compressive strength of ~230 kPa, suggesting …

Obtaining a molecular-level understanding of the reaction of alcohols with heterogeneous model catalysts is critical for improving industrial catalytic processes, such as the production of H2 from alcohols. Gold has been shown to be an excellent oxidation catalyst once oxygen is added to it. There are many applications of photocatalytic chemistry, with hundreds of researchers investigating photocatalytic materials. Another method of investigation could aid these researchers and contribute significantly to this field. This study attempts to develop a new method of analysis by expanding the capabilities of the Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) into the realm of photocatalysis. We coated QCM crystals with the stable and well-known photocatalyst, titanium dioxide, and utilized these coated crystals to begin to develop an analysis procedure for our modified instrument. Ice recrystallization is of great importance to both fundamental research and practical applications, however understanding and controlling ice recrystallization processes remains challenging. Here, we report the discovery of an ion-specific effect on ice recrystallization. By simply changing the initial type and concentration of ions in an aqueous solution, the size of ice grains after recrystallization can be tuned from 27.4±4.1 to 277.5±30.9 mm. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the ability of the ion to be incorporated into the ice phase plays a key role in the ultimate size of the ice grains after recrystallization. This work reports the development of Silver nanoparticles implanted into a polymer as a solar absorber. The plasmonic nature of silver nanoparticle allows for adjustments to be made in its UV-VIS-NIR absorbance spectrum. A combination of different sized/shaped particles could result in ideal absorption of the majority of the solar spectrum. Allotting this with the stability of a polymer leads to potential solids or solutions that could work as a solar absorber. This study is focused on structural characterization of hybrid glasses obtained by consolidation of melting gels. The melting gels were prepared in molar ratios of methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and dimethyldiethoxysilane (DMDES) of 75%MTES-25%DMDES and 65%MTES-35%DMDES. Following consolidation, the hybrid glasses were characterized using Raman, 29Si and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, synchrotron Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of Si–C bonds in the hybrid glasses and 8-membered ring structures in the Si–O–Si network. Multifunctional polyisobutylenes (PIBs) are of great academic and commercial interest. Current methods to create these materials currently utilize prohibitively expensive synthetic strategies. Recently, Storey et al. reported a novel method for the synthesis of multifunctional PIB which is more commercially viable than the current methods. For this research, the material produced via this technique was utilized to create a thermally reversible crosslinked system using Diels-Alder chemistry.
