Micellar Nanocatalysis For Efficient Reactions., Uyen T Duong Aug 2021

Micellar Nanocatalysis For Efficient Reactions., Uyen T Duong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Water is considered a green, sustainable, and inexpensive solvent for organic synthesis. However, performing organic reactions in water is especially challenging due to the inherent insolubility of substrates and catalysts. Inspired from Nature, where chemistry happens in water, micellar catalysis has recently gained much attention, especially for applications in pharmaceutical industry. Aqueous micelles are generally formed by amphiphile`s self-aggregation, a particular class of molecules possessing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic components. The aqueous micelle contains a hydrophobic cavity, which allows the lipophilic substrates and catalyst to go inside micelles, allowing their much higher localized concentration that enhances the reaction rates and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chromophores and macromolecules containing [1,4]benzodioxino[3,2-b]oxanthrene (BDO) has attracted attention since the beginning of this century. Previous studies demonstrated their potential in wide range of applications including gas permeability, hydrogen and energy storage, sensing, and catalysis. Better understanding of the geometrical and electronic structure characteristics of BOD-based chromophores is vital to advance their employment in these applications. This work utilizes spectroscopy techniques coupled with density functional theory methods to provide this required understanding. Substituted BDOs exhibit red-shift of >1 eV in their electronic transitions compared to unsubstituted BDOs. This shift is explained by a molecular orbital reorganization induced by the substituents. …

Magnesiothermic Combustion Synthesis Of Nanocrystalline Silicon And Oxidation Kinetics Of Magnesium Particles, Sergio Cordova

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Magnesium (Mg) is a well-known reduction agent in metallurgy (more specifically, in metallothermy). Recently, magnesiothermic reduction of oxides has been used in self-propagating high-temperature synThesis (SHS) of advanced materials such as ultrahigh-temperature ceramics (UHTC). The magnesiothermic SHS has also been used for the conversion of silica (SiO2) to silicon-based materials for thermoelectric applications. However, since oxidation of Mg releases a lot of heat, the direct use of it as the reduction agent leads to excessively high temperatures and undesirable sintering of the products. We have proposed to use magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) instead of Mg in the SHS of nanostructured silicon. …

Synthesis Of The Diazonium Zwitterionic Polymer/Monomer For Use As The Electrolyte In Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (Pem) Fuel Cells, Josiah Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My research goals are to synthesize new zwitterionic perfluorosulfonimide (PFSI) monomer/polymers. They are expected to replace traditionally used perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) polymers as the electrolyte in PEM fuel cells. For the PFSI monomer preparation, we designed a nine-step synthesis route. Thus far, I have successfully completed the synthesis of 4- (2-bromotetrafluoroethoxy)-benzenesulfonyl amide, 4-acetoxybenzenesulfonic acid sodium salt, and 4-chlorosulfonyl phenyl acetate. The coupling reaction of 4-(2-bromotetrafluoroethoxy)- benzenesulfonyl amide with 4-chlorosulfonyl phenyl acetate, was troublesome due to slow reaction kinetics and byproducts. Additionally, I did a methodology study for the homopolymerziation of the perfluoro 3(oxapent-4-ene) sulfonyl fluoride monomer. We compared the weight …

Intersection Of Redox Chemistry And Ubiquitylation: Post-Translational Modifications Required For Maintaining Cellular Homeostasis And Neuroprotection, Emma I. Kane, Kelly L. Waters, Donald E. Spratt

Chemistry

Neurodegeneration has been predominantly recognized as neuronal breakdown induced by the accumulation of aggregated and/or misfolded proteins and remains a preliminary factor in age-dependent disease. Recently, critical regulating molecular mechanisms and cellular pathways have been shown to induce neurodegeneration long before aggregate accumulation could occur. Although this opens the possibility of identifying biomarkers for early onset diagnosis, many of these pathways vary in their modes of dysfunction while presenting similar clinical phenotypes. With selectivity remaining difficult, it is promising that these neuroprotective pathways are regulated through the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). This essential post-translational modification (PTM) involves the specific attachment of …

The Activity Of Abstraction In Physical Chemistry Problem Solving And Instruction, Jessica M. Karch Aug 2021

The Activity Of Abstraction In Physical Chemistry Problem Solving And Instruction, Jessica M. Karch

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Productive problem solving, concept construction, and sense making occur through the core process of abstraction. Although the capacity for domain-general abstraction is developed at a young age, the role of abstraction in increasingly complex and disciplinary environments, such as those encountered in undergraduate STEM education, is not well understood. Undergraduate physical chemistry relies particularly heavily on abstraction because it uses many overlapping and imperfect mathematical models to represent and interpret phenomena occurring on multiple scales. To reconcile these models, extract meaning from them, and recognize when to apply them in problem solving requires processes of abstraction. This dissertation aims to …

The major challenges to practical implementation of efficient noble metal based molecular water oxidation catalysts are their stability and recycle ability. Herein, noble metal Ru based molecular water oxidation catalysts were covalently anchored in MOFs through “amide bond” as bridges, which leads to the formation of high-efficiency and robust heterogeneous catalysts for water oxidation reaction. We show that the efficiency for CeIV-driven water oxidation was significantly enhanced by 120 times when the Ru molecules were immobilized on the frameworks of MIL-101(Cr). The relationship between recycle stability and the structure of the Ru complexes covalently anchored in MOFs was …

Analog Studies Of Organic Pathways In Wind Cave Through Cave Water And Crystals, Wilson Mcnaughton, Joshua Sebree Ph.D. Jul 2021

Analog Studies Of Organic Pathways In Wind Cave Through Cave Water And Crystals, Wilson Mcnaughton, Joshua Sebree Ph.D.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

In Wind Cave, organic molecules from the surface dissolved in water will slowly filter down into the cave through the porous limestone. While the water slowly proceeds down through the limestone, the water dissolves the limestone along the way. This dissolving of the limestone causes a quasi-equilibrium that deposits the organic molecules into the calcite structures found in Wind Cave. These large trapped organic molecules, mainly humic and fulvic acid, can be tracked by using UV light. The UV light causes these molecules to fluoresce blue, while the calcite structures generally do not have a strong blue fluorescence. The water …
