Environmental Modifications Of Atomic Properties: The Ground And 1s2p Excited States Of Compressed Helium, N. C. Pyper, T. C. Naginey, Colm T. Whelan

Physics Faculty Publications

Atoms remaining as recognizably distinct constituents of bulk condensed phases can have properties modified from those of the isolated species. Dense helium bubbles at high pressures are a common form of radiation damage degrading the mechanical and electrical properties of host materials. Detailed knowledge is critical for predicting their long term performance. Modifications of the ground and first singlet excited states of confined compressed helium are investigated using an entirely non-empirical theory based on the results of ab initio self-consistent field calculations with corrections for the effects of electron correlation. For finite sized portions representing bulk condensed fcc and bcc …

Identification Of New Pathways For Co Oxidation On Rh(111) & Spatial And Structural Control Of O-Induced Reconstruction Of Ag(111), Marie Turano Jan 2021

Identification Of New Pathways For Co Oxidation On Rh(111) & Spatial And Structural Control Of O-Induced Reconstruction Of Ag(111), Marie Turano

Dissertations

Understanding the fundamentals of oxygen surface structures under a variety of conditions is pivotal to determining reactivity of heterogeneous catalysis. Exposure of catalytically active metal surfaces to high oxygen coverages results in a myriad of surface structures. A further complication is the formation of subsurface oxygen (Osub) or oxygen present in the near subsurface region of the metal. It is known to form in transition metals yet the absorption of oxygen and resultant formation of Osub is not equivalent across all catalytically relevant metals. As a result, it is difficult to predict the stability and efficacy of the formation of …

Development Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Therapeutic Target Enzymes: Paths To Discover Novel Antimicrobials, Thahani Shifna Habeeb Mohammad Jan 2021

Development Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Therapeutic Target Enzymes: Paths To Discover Novel Antimicrobials, Thahani Shifna Habeeb Mohammad

Dissertations

The rising antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics is a major global problem, which has been exacerbated by the inappropriate use of antibiotics. The effectiveness of frequently prescribed penicillin derivatives and β-lactamase inhibitors are compromised by the evolution of bacterial β-lactamases and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Consequently, design and synthesis of small-molecule inhibitors of identified novel antibiotic targets is an urgent unmet medical need. We previously demonstrated that N-functionalized α-aminocyclobutanones can act as peptidomimetic enzyme inhibitors, including inhibition of a key esterase in Francisella Tularensis. The carbonyl of a cyclobutanone is electrophilic due to ring strain, therefore cyclobutanone derivatives can serve as transition state …

The manufactured chemical pollutants, like 1,4 dioxane and PFAS (per- and polyfluroralkyl substances), found in the underground water and/or drinking water are challenging to be removed or biodegraded. Energetic electrons are capable of mediating and removing them. This paper utilizes FLUKA code to evaluate the beam-wastewater interaction effects with different energy, space and divergence distributions of the electron beam. With 8 MeV average energy, the electron beam exits from a 0.0127 cm thick titanium window, travels through a 4.3 cm distance air and a second 0.0127 cm thick stainless water container window with 2.43 cm radius, and finally is injected …

Predicting Material Properties: Applications Of Multi-Scale Multiphysics Numerical Modeling To Transport Problems In Biochemical Systems And Chemical Process Engineering, Tom Pace

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Material properties are used in a wide variety of theoretical models of material behavior. Descriptive properties quantify the nature, structure, or composition of the material. Behavioral properties quantify the response of the material to an imposed condition. The central question of this work concerns the prediction of behavioral properties from previously determined descriptive properties through hierarchical multi-scale, multiphysics models implemented as numerical simulations. Applications covered focus on mass transport models, including sequential enzyme-catalyzed reactions in systems biology, and an industrial chemical process in a common reaction medium.

Development Of Retention Index Based Simulation For Validation Of Compound Identification In Gc×Gc, Palathip Kakanopas

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) is a high-performance technique for separation, identification and quantification of volatiles and semi-volatiles in complex multi-component samples such as biomolecular molecules, essential oil, foods, and petroleum. One of the most popular detectors used for peak identification with GC×GC is mass spectrometer (MS) allowing identification of separated peaks based on comparison with mass spectral library. However, only MS library comparison shows low confidence in compound identifications due to the fact that compounds with similar structures (especially for isomers) often have similar mass spectra. Apart from sample preparation, a great challenge is to effectively select types of …

Synthesis And Application Of Polymeric Micelles Assembled From Pentafluorophenyl Ester-Containing Amphiphilic Block Copolymers, Panittha Damsongsang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Functionalizable pentafluorophenyl ester (PFP)-based polymer precursors, namely poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate) (PPFPA) and poly(pentafluorophenyl metharylate) (PPFPMA), and zwitterionic poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) are the two polymers having extremely different solubility. It is therefore almost impossible to synthesize their block copolymers in a controlled manner by the conventional approach. Herein, we demonstrated, for the first time, that the synthesis and in situ formation of nanoassemblies of their diblock copolymer can be done via polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) using reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization. PMPC was synthesized as the first block and further employed as a macro chain transfer agent (PMPC Macro-CTA) for the synthesis …
