Desulfurization Of Thiourea Into Guanidines And Benzoxazoles Using Electrochemical Oxidation Processes, Thao Huynh Nguyen Thanh

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

2-Aminobenzoxazoles and guanidines are important building block for therapeutic agents. The general synthetic strategies of 2-aminobenzoxazoles and guanidines from thioureas rely on the use of excess or stoichiometric amount of oxidizing agents, multiple-step route, and harsh reaction conditions. Hence, in this research, the synthesis of 2-aminobenzoxazole and guanidines will be developed under mild electrochemical oxidation processes using sodium iodide. Based on optimization study, we were able to synthesize 29 examples of 2-aminobenzoxazoles in good to high yields from 2-aminophenols and isothiocyanates in one pot under electro-cyclization using NaI/NaCl in catalytic amount. Moreover, 20 examples of guanidines were prepared in good …

Applications Of The Match Model To Analyze Student Problem-Solving, Barbara Chiu

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Problem-solving has been recognized as a critical skill that students lack in the current education system, due to the use of algorithmic questions in tests that can be simply memorized and solved without conceptual understanding. Research on student problem-solving is needed to gain deeper insight into how students are approaching problems and where they lack proficiency so that instruction can help students gain a conceptual understanding of chemistry. The MAtCH (methods, analogies, theory, context, how) model was recently developed from expert explanations of their research and could be a valuable model to identify key components of student problem-solving. This project …

Classification Of Ground-Truth Fire Debris Samples Using Neural Networks, Nicholas Thurn Jan 2021

Classification Of Ground-Truth Fire Debris Samples Using Neural Networks, Nicholas Thurn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Fire debris samples are currently analyzed according to ASTM E1618-19, which is the "Standard Test Method for Ignitable Liquid Residues in Extracts from Fire Debris Samples by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry." This method requires that an analyst make a visual comparison to an appropriate reference sample using the total ion and the extracted ion chromatograms. The analyst then provides an opinion about whether an ignitable liquid residue is present in the sample. The method is inherently subjective due to the visual interpretation that is needed. In order to automate this process, this work uses neural networks and a subset of the …

The enzyme, 2′-3′-cyclic nucleotide 3′-phosphodiesterase (CNPase) has been known for over fifty years. Nevertheless, the roles this membrane-bound enzyme play have yet to be described completely. Recently, there has been renewed interest in the study of this enzyme due to studies that suggest that CNPase plays a role in the mediation of cellular inflammatory responses in renal and nervous system tissues. Also, this enzyme, found in oligodendrocytes of the nervous system, has been reported to participate in significant regulatory changes associated with age which may be involved in age-related CNS degeneration. Consequently, development of CNPase inhibitors is of interest and …

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

This report describes the systematic incorporation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto mesoporous TiO2 (MPT) particles without strong attractive forces to efficiently serve as reactive and recyclable catalysts in the homocoupling of arylboronic acid in green reaction conditions. Unlike using nonporous TiO2 particles and conventional SiO2 particles as supporting materials, the employment of MPT particles significantly improves the loading efficiency of AuNPs. The incorporated AuNPs are less than 10 nm in diameter, regardless of the amount of applied gold ions, and their surfaces, free from any modifiers, act as highly reactive catalytic sites to notably improve the yields …

Synthesis And Catalytic Properties Of Metal-Organic Frameworks Mimicking Carbonic Anhydrase, Longji Li

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The natural enzyme carbonic anhydrase has gained attention in recent years for its ability to catalyze the interconversion of aqueous carbon dioxide (CO2) and bicarbonate. However, it lacks the efficiency to qualify practical usage on a large scale due to its inherent deficiency and fragile nature. On the other hand, its active center can be used as an ideal model for the design of novel catalytic materials targeting carbon dioxide capture and sequestration. This study focused on the synthesis of a zinc-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF-1) mimicking the carbonic anhydrase using the solvothermal method. Important properties such as catalytic …

Exploration Of The Use Of Palladium And Nickel To Catalyze Enolate Cross-Coupling And The Enantioselective Mizoroki-Heck Reaction., Mary Elizabeth Sexton (Charlton)

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Palladium catalysis is a common synthetic tool utilized by organic chemists to create carbon-carbon bonds. We utilized palladium to catalyze the γ-arylation of α, β-unsaturated ketones, and esters. This work expands on palladium-catalyzed α-arylation chemistry and extends it to the vinylogous variation at the γ-position. We report the regioselective synthesis of mono-γ-arylated 7-methoxy-4-methylcoumarin. We also report efforts towards applying our reaction conditions to other α,β-unsaturated ketones and esters to expand the scope of our reaction conditions.

In addition, we utilized palladium to catalyze the enantioselective asymmetric intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck reaction to produce potentially bioactive phenanthridinone analogs. We achieve this through the …

In this paper, magnetic-molecularly imprinted polymer was used for the preconcentration of trace levels of imidacloprid in water and apple samples prior to liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometric determination. The selectivity of the magnetic polymer was united with the sensitivity and the high resolving power of the chromatographic system. The developed method showed a linear range from 10.0 to 500.0 μg/L. The quantitative recoveries were obtained for water and apple samples in the range of 92.0%-99.0 %. The relative standard deviations of intra-day and inter-day tests were found to be in the range of 0.8%-1.2% and 1.2%-1.6 %, respectively. In addition, …

Surface And Chemical Characteristics Of Platinum Modified Activated Carbon Electrodesand Their Electrochemical Performance, Tuğrul Yumak, Serap Yumak, Abdulkeri̇m Karabulut

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Platinum (Pt) loaded activated carbons (ACs) were synthesized by the thermal decomposition of platinum (II) acetylacetonate (Pt(acac)2) over chemically activated glucose-based biochar. The effect of Pt loading on surface area, pore characteristics, surface chemistry, chemical structure, and surface morphology were determined by various techniques. XPS studies proved the presence of metallic Pt0 on the AC surface. The graphitization degree of Pt loaded ACs were increased with the loaded Pt0 amount. The electrochemical performance of the Pt-loaded ACs (Pt@AC) was determined not only by the conventional three-electrode system but also by packaged supercapacitors in CR2032 casings. The capacitive performance of Pt@AC …

One-Pot Synthesis Of Graphene Hydrogel-Anchored Cobalt-Copper Nanoparticles And Their Catalysis In Hydrogen Generation From Ammonia Borane, Ibtihel Zaier, Önder Meti̇n

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

We reported a facile one-pot synthesis of bimetallic CoCu nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on graphene hydrogel (GH-CoCu) as catalysts in hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of ammonia borane (HAB). The presented novel one-pot method composed of the reduction of the mixture of graphene oxide, cobalt(II), and copper(II) acetate tetrahydrates by aqueous ethylene glycol solution in a teflon-coated stainless-steel reactor at 180 °C. The structure of the yielded GH-CoCu nanocatalysts was characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, XPS, and ICP-MS. This is the first example of both the synthesis of bimetallic CoCu NPs anchored on GH and the testing of a hydrothermally prepared …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Titanium dioxide/phthalocyanine (TiO2/Pc), TiO2/fluor containing phthalocyanine (TiO2/FPc), and TiO2/fluor containing cobalt phthalocyanine (TiO2/FCoPc) had been successfully fabricated by a simple combination of phthalocyanines obtained by in-situ synthesis on the surface of TiO2 nanofibers prepared by electrospinning. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs and X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the phthalocyanines uniformly immobilized on the surface of TiO2 nanofibers. Photocatalytic activity of TiO2, TiO2/Pc, TiO2/FPc, TiO2/FCoPc nanofibers for methylene blue in water was comparatively investigated firstly by ultraviolet-visible absorption measurements with time, and kinetic parameters were calculated. Results indicated that the obtained TiO2/Pc, TiO2/FPc and TiO2/FCoPc exhibited high photocatalytic activity for the degradation …

The Application Of 13c Nmr And Untargeted Multivariate Analysis For Classifying Virgin Coconut Oil, Lolita G. Lagurin, Mark Joseph Garrovillas, Fabian M. Dayrit

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is produced from fresh mature coconut meat without the use of chemicals or high heat. VCO can be made using three processes: fermentation, centrifuge, and expeller. To determine quality, it is important to be able to differentiate control VCO (fresh) from old VCO, refined bleached and deodorized coconut oil (RBDCO), and VCO which has been adulterated with RBDCO. Differentiating these types of samples has remained a challenge because of their chemical similarity. This study investigated the ability of 13C NMR and multivariate analysis to differentiate these different coconut oil samples. The methodology used the standard 13C …
