The Preparation Of Functional Surfaces, Philip Thomas Dirlam Jun 2011

The Preparation Of Functional Surfaces, Philip Thomas Dirlam

Master's Theses

Diels-Alder chemistry was utilized to manipulate the surface energy of glass substrates in reversible manner. Glass slides and capillaries were functionalized with hydrophobic dieneophiles resulting in a  non-wetting surface.  A retro Diels-Alder reaction facilitated by the thermal treatment of the surface’s function to cleave the hydrophobic dieneophile and resulted in the fabrication of a hydrophilic surface. Contact angle (CA) measurements were used as preliminary measurements for monitoring the changes in surface energy exhibited during the initial hydrophobic state (CA - 70±3°), after attachment of the dieneophile creating  a hydrophobic state (CA - 101±9°) followed by reestablishment of the hydrophilic state …

Part A: The Use Of Nonionic Associative Polymers For The Thickening And Emulsifying Of Personal Care Products/ Part B: The Synthesis Of A Manganese Sod Mimetic For Reactive Coatings, Mallory Lynn Mcmahon

Master's Theses

Part A

The use of nonionic associative thickeners was proposed for personal care applications.  Various limitations of current rheology modifiers used in personal care were discussed.  Nonionic associative polymers were examined as both thickeners and emulsifiers.  The structure/property relationship for nonionic polymers and their ability to thicken and emulsify were fully examined.  Results showed an increase in thickening efficiency for nonionic associative polymers with higher log(P) (partition coefficient) values.  This was due to the formation of smaller aggregates and increased bridging between aggregates.  The connection between oil polarity, log(P) of the associative polymer, and emulsion stability showed no relationship however; …

Ever since the advent of polymer science, polyurethanes have played a huge role in the industrial world. They have been used in endless applications from furniture padding to aircraft coatings, to binders for insensitive munitions. It is therefore important that the chemistry of polyurethanes is well understood as well as the ability to draw relationships between the raw materials selected and the end-use properties of the polymer. Because of the multitude of practical applications, the development of an undergraduate polymer chemistry laboratory focused on polyurethane elastomers is developed and described herein. Polymer chemistry students are exposed to hydroxyterminated polybutadiene (HTPB) …

Mechanistic Study Of The Small Molecule Inhibitor Dx-52-1, Junru Cui May 2011

Mechanistic Study Of The Small Molecule Inhibitor Dx-52-1, Junru Cui

Master's Theses

Cell migration is a basic biological process that is fundamental to several normal and disease processes such as embryonic development, tissue repair, immune function, angiogenesis and cancer cell invasion and metastasis. Small organic molecules inhibiting cell migration can be used as both research probes and therapeutic agents. DX-52-1, a semisynthetic derivative of the natural product quinocarmycin (also known as quinocarcin), inhibits the migration of Madin-Darby canine kidney epithelial cells with nanomolar concentration. We have identified galectin-3, a multifunctional protein whose best-known function is its sugar binding ability, as a secondary target of DX-52-1 with functions in cell motility. In addition, …

Mechanisms Of Non-Enzymatic Peptide Bond Formation: Thioester And Transamidation Routes, Danielle Amie Landry May 2011

Mechanisms Of Non-Enzymatic Peptide Bond Formation: Thioester And Transamidation Routes, Danielle Amie Landry

Master's Theses

The reaction mechanisms employed during non-ribosomal peptide (amide) synthesis in the non-ribosomal modular enzyme complex and in the enzyme glutaminyl cyclase were also used for spontaneous peptide (amide) synthesis in a buffered, abiotic solution. Analytical analyses revealed that spontaneous peptide (amide) bond formation occurred under mild prebiotic conditions during both the thioester-based production of phenylalanine peptides and peptidyl thioesters, and the spontaneous cyclization of glutamine t-butyl ester (Gln-tbe) into pyroglutamic acid t-butyl ester. Internal standard-based quantitative MS determined that 4.9 x 10-5 sec-1 was the rate constant for spontaneous Gln-tbe cyclization in imidazole buffer, pH 7, at 50°C, and that …

Evaluation Of Stain Blocking Primer Coatings With Low Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Content And Effects Of Drying Conditions On The Properties Of Water Reducible Coatings For Polypropylene, Megan Alexandra Hart Mar 2011

Evaluation Of Stain Blocking Primer Coatings With Low Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Content And Effects Of Drying Conditions On The Properties Of Water Reducible Coatings For Polypropylene, Megan Alexandra Hart

Master's Theses

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) plans to reduce the volatile organic compound (VOC) limit of specialty primers, sealers, and undercoaters (SPSU), also referred to as stain blocking primers, from 350 g/L to 100 g/L in January of 2012. These coatings are primarily used as stain blocking primers over a variety of substrates, such as wood and drywall. Currently the stain blocking primers that are considered most effective are solvent based primers that contain VOC levels much higher than 100 g/L. The goal of this study is to determine if primers on the market today with a VOC content of …

Aromatic Amine--Haloboranes : Evidence For Trigonal Boronium Cations, Debra H. Reid Aug 1984

Aromatic Amine--Haloboranes : Evidence For Trigonal Boronium Cations, Debra H. Reid

Master's Theses

In the last twenty years Lewis adducts of boron trihalides and mixed boron trihalides have been examined using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The donor to which the boron trihalide attaches has generally been some type of amine (strong donor), though oxygen, sulfur, phosphorous, and other donors ahve also been studied. The boron trihalide portion serves as the Lewis acid. Various nuclei (1H, 13C, 15N, 11B, 19F) have been examined in such boron trihalide adducts and the general trend in signal position in all 5 nuclei observed is (in order of increasing downfield shift) BF3

The acid strength of the boron …

Isolation And Characterization Of The Serum Ferroxidase Inhibitor, Melissa Page Calisch Sep 1982

Isolation And Characterization Of The Serum Ferroxidase Inhibitor, Melissa Page Calisch

Master's Theses

strong evidence suggests that the serum ferroxidases (ceruloplasmin andferroxidase II) promote the formation of Fe-III transferrin and thereby stimulate the turnover of iron from tissue stores. Ceruloplasmin is the major ferroxidase in human serum; whereas, ferroxidase II accotmts for an increased proportion of the activity in less highly developed animals. A large fold increase in total ferroxidase II activity was observed when both human and rabbit sera were subjected to gel-filtration on sephadex G-200. This indicated that whole serum might contain a potent inhibitor of ferroxidase II. Such an inhibitor has been isolated and purified to homogeneity by a combination …

The Investigation Of 3,4- Dipheny1-3- Cyclobutene-1, 2-Dione As A Precursor To A Bis-Ketene, John Dana Myers May 1978

The Investigation Of 3,4- Dipheny1-3- Cyclobutene-1, 2-Dione As A Precursor To A Bis-Ketene, John Dana Myers

Master's Theses

The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of 3, 4-diphenyl-3-cyclobutene-1, 2-dione as a synthetic precursor to bis-ketenes and ultimately examine the chemical behavior of this relatively unknown system. We intend to investigate some of the chemical behavior of bis-phenylketene produced by the well-documented photochemical ring opening of 3, 4-diphenyl-3-cyclobutene-1, 2-dione. Specifically the use of alkenes a chemical traps for the bis-ketene will be investigated. These reactions will be compared and contrasted to the behavior of the ketenes and vinyl ketenes.
