The beautiful, bright,luster that chromium has is no longer the prime quality that makes its use so extensive. Today its extreme hardness has taken the foremost place. Parts worn by use and re-claimed with chromium, not only wear longer than the original ones· but they also save valuable metal and time put into new ones. There has been developed and perfected a series of synthetic materials which successfully meet modern needs.
The detergents, in general, have some or all of the following properties: wetting-out, dispersing, emulsifying, penetrating, and cleaning.
There seems to be a need to investigate some of these new detergents for commercial cleaning purposes.

For many years, it has been known in the plating industry that certain metal baths were affected when materials called ’'addition agents” were added. The addition agents were usually organic and had high molecular weights. Nickel is especially sensitive to the presence of such foreign substances, a very bright deposit being obtained upon the addition of small amounts of gum, gelatin, glue, gum tragacanth, gum arabic and similar materials. These substances have, however, proved unsatisfactory because of difficulty of control and because of decomposition of the agent.

Within the Marquette chemical laboratories under the direction and supervision of Dr. John R. Koch, professor and head of the Chemistry Department, many noteworthy advances in enzyme chemistry have been achieved. A new type all glass, single unit viscometer was developed and perfected by Koch and now is the basis of the study of enzyme activity by viscometric methods. The use of this viscometer is not limited solely to work in these laboratories but has also been used with great success in bating and brewing.

The reasons for the choice of this study are several in number. Previous collecting trips had shown to some extent the relatively high productivity of organic life in this stream. From superficial external evidence, however, it seemed likely that the stream should contain some degree of pollution. This research was undertaken in order to study the breaking of the double bonds in a benzene ring by some means other than direct hydrogenation. A study of the literature reveals that the benzene ring has been broken up by chlorination giving hexachlorides of benzene as products of the reaction. Much has been written on the testing of organic compounds to inhibit the sulfuric acid corrosion in the pickling of steel. For the most part, however, this has been confined to work either on commercial inhibitors which are usually coal tar derivatives of unknown composition, or upon complex amines or sulfonates with little attention paid to comparing the types of polar linkages. The emphasis has been placed on the complexity of molecular structure rather than a thorough analysis of what structure really means in inhibiting action.

Of late years, the manufacture of oils oxidized by the direct action of air upon them, has greatly increased. ’’Blown oils”, as these are called, render non-drying or semi-drying oils (rape, cotton seed, etc.) more suitable for paint, either directly or as ingredients in paint mixtures. In the case of drying oils (linseed oil, etc.), oxidation changes necessary to produce more rapid absorption of oxygen from the air by the oil, is brought about more rapidly.

The electrolytic deposition of chromium has been an accomplished fact since the early 1920's. Considerable investigation had taken place before this, but it was not until 1920 that any process had been devised to make chromium plating successful commercially. Since then, and especially in the last ten years, this has been a favorite research problem amony[sic] many electrochemists and the results have been most gratifying.

The original intent of this thesis was twofold: First, to adapt the dropping pellet method of determining melting points to the determination of the melting points of various binary mixtures of Halowax 1014 and natural waxes. This work follows up the investigation of Kroening who used the ball and ring method of determining the melting points of mixtures of various Halowaxes and natural waxes. Second, to attempt to ascertain whether there are formed in these binary mixtures chemical compounds which would account for their peculiar behavior as regards melting points.

The problem was suggested by the work of Louis Kroening in his thesis, "The Effect of Halowax 1012, 1013, and 1014 on the Melting Points of the Various Waxes", and also by that of Joseph M. Sevenich in his thesis, "An Investigation of Halowaxes in Trinary Wax Mixtures".
