A Comparative Study Of The Chemical Composition Of Artificially Dried Hay To Obtain An Insight As To Its Nutritive Value, Charles F. Schalbe

This work has been undertaken as a ·result of tests recently carried out at the Greene Brothers' Brook Hill Farm at Genesee Depot, Wisconsin. It was found that cows, when fed artificially dried hay, produce milk in quantities greatly in excess of that accountable from known differences in the hay. Moreover, the milk seemed to have a different flavor - similar to pasture produced milk.

This thesis deals with the methods or analysis or pecan nut shells and an attempt to identify the extracted pigment.

At present nut shells are waste products. This makes their study interesting from a commercial standpoint. In view of the fact that very little work of this kind has been done, nut shell analysis offers interesting research problems as well as excellent practice in the technique or organic analysis.

Such great interest is now being taken in plant pigments that, a thorough investigation of the red pigment yielded by pecan nut shell would be an appreciated contribution to science.

Casing head gasoline obtained from natural gas yields five commercial products. One of these is a mixture of amyl alcohols. As treated by the Sharples Company, West Virginia, pentane is separated and treated with chlorine. Three chlorine derivatives are produced. In the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry for November, 1913, J.W. Ellms and S.J. Hauser introduced the ortho-tolidine test for the detection of minute quantities of free chlorine in water. Antecedant to the experimentation of the above men with ortho-tolidine, the starch-iodide test ·was universally used for the· detection of free chlorine. In this test, the chlorine is calculated by liberating iodine from potassium iodide by the available chlorine, and the iodine being titrated with sodium thio sulfate. starch solution is used as the indicator. Solids dissolved in a liquid produce a general decrease in the evaporation rate of the solvent. Experiments were performed, using light naphtha as the solvent and Paraffin, Japan, Carnauba, Candelilla, Ozokerite, Montan, and Bees waxes as solutes. These waxes were selected since they are the waxes most commonly used in the manufacture of floor waxes and work of the kind presented in this thesis finds its greatest application in connection with that industry.

The phenomena of the separation of substances by 'Various membranes was first -discovered by Thomas Graham, who found that certain materials passed through membranes much more readily than others. This consequently afforded him a norm by which he distinguished a variety of substances. Those which passed through the membrane most readily he called crystalloids, because of their crystalline nature. Those which were retained colloids, because of their gelatinous or glue like consistency. The distinguishing factor is however not a legitimate one, because it has been proven by Dr. Kahlenberg that opposite reactions occur.

Despite the fact that considerable work has been done on cholesterol, relatively little is known about its isomer, phytosterol. Both cholesterol and phytosterol belong to the general group of sterols. Cholesterol is described as an aromatic sterol, a mono~atomic secondary alcohol, containing an iso-propyl and a vinyl group, with a terpene-like structure. Cholesterol was first discovered by Conradi in 1775, then by Gren (1788) in biliary calculi.
