Since the introduction of Arrhenius’ theory of electrolytic dissociation more than forty years ago, many applications of the chemistry of electrolytes have been formulated. Of the many uses of conductance measurements, conductivity titrations have lately assumed the theoretical and technical importance which they rightfully should have. Conductance measurements enjoy prominence both in practice and in research, and the almost unlimited field provides a wealth of material for the ardent electrochemist. There is no doubt that many of the old analytic methods will soon be largely supplanted by this newer procedure which even at the present finds such varied usefulness.

This thesis is concerned with the melting points of various waxes and the effect of Halowax 1012, 1013 and 1014 upon their physical constants. Interest in this problem was aroused "by the fact that Halowax as shown by Nathan Smith in his thesis, "The Effect of Halowax Upon Lubricating Oils and Greases”, decreases the viscosity of oils. Since lubricating oils contain waxes it is logical to expect that this decrease in viscosity is due to the lowering of the melting point of the waxes present. The data presented in the literature refers to the determination of absolute conductivity values and-is very unsatisfactory from a practical point of view. The aim here has not been to furnish absolute data, but to provide a simple means of determining the relative conductivity of any series of liquids. Knowing such a set of relative conductivities, absolute values can readily be calculated therefrom.

This thesis is concerned with lubricating oils and solid lubricants. The initial problem in this research was the effect of Halowax 1012, 1013, and 1014 on lubricating oil. During the investigation, however, it was observed that the addition of Halowax to the lubricating oils formed a false gel at ordinary temperature, the consistency depending on the percentage of Halowax added. The result no longer favored continued research since the lubricating oil was made impractical. The basis of this thesis resides in an experiment performed by Dr. J.R. Koch of Marquette University during the summer of 1931. Dr. Koch poured some liquid emulsion into an "H" tube and attached the electrodes to a source of DC current. A few days later he noticed the wax bad separated from the emulsion and had passed to the positive electrode leaving the solution surrounding the negative electrode clear.
