This thesis was suggested by the work of Mr. B. J. Pozorski and Mr. W. Adashek. Mr. Pozorski investigated the inhibiting qualities of various separators when placed between two platinum electrodes in a copper sulfate solution. Mr. Adashek worked on the efficiency of various lead plating solutions using lead electrodes and electrlyes containing soluble lead salts. Combining the work of these men, the author is investigating the prohibitive plating properties of various separator using a lead plating solution. By so doing, the investigation has a closer relationship to the actual performance of the storage battery .

Chromium is one of the hardest metals and when properly plated gives a beautiful lustre. It has a fine resistance to oxidizing agents and does not tarnish up to 600°C. Oxygen has little effect on chromium plate, making the latter invaluable for embellishments and decorative purposes.
However, there are difficulties to be overcome in chromium plating, such as,
- Poor throwing power.
- Formation of trivalent chromium.
- Evolution of hydrogen at the cathode.
It has been found that current efficiency is low, resulting in low throwing power, uneven plating and waste of electric energy.

Aluminum has been used in cooking utensils for about thirty years and is still the favorite material employed. There is no disagreeable taste, odor or discoloration discernible from its use.
There have been many experiments to prove that aluminum does not depreciate the quality of the food cooked in it. It does, however, add itself to the acidic and basic foods cooked therein. The amount taken up by neutral foods is negligible.
For experimental purposes, fruit juices were chosen as the attacking substances and the strips of aluminum were of the quality used in ordinary cooking utensils, not cast aluminum.

This work was performed with the intention of giving some information of the solubility of the more common waxes, by means of extraction with several commercial solvents. Besides the individual waxes, various mixtures of waxes were also used to determine the effect of the mixtures on the extractability.
Determinations are also made to find the extractable matter in a commercial furniture polish and shellac. The acid, saponification and iodine values of the polish and shellac are also found.

The subject matter of this thesis deals with the character of the chromium plate, the amount of hydrogen liberated at the cathode, the weight of the chromium deposited, and the cathode efficiency.
This investigation was made for the purpose of aiding .further research work to increase the cathode efficiency of the chromium plating bath. If greater efficiency can be obtained, then, chromium, as nickel, can be plated on small articles in rotating barrels.

Boncyk in his research on potentiometric titrations, made the observation that apparently mercurous nitrate could be used to titrate chromic acid solution. He used potassium iodide as an outside indicator and found that a slight excess of mercurous nitrate gave a gray precipitate with potassium iodide solution. The precipitate seemed to indicate the end point, or the neutralization of the chromic acid; a slight excess of the mercurous nitrate causing the immediate formation of a gray precipitate. The problem of this thesis is to study the plating prohibitive properties of the various materials commonly used in the manufacturing of separators, and to indicate which material would be most serviceable and feasible in a separator. At one time positives and negatives were kept not more than 0.25 inches apart, with the idea of reducing the intervening layers of electrolyte, and, therefore, the internal resistance of the cell, as much as possible.
