Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy Of Coma Cluster Early–Type Galaxies, D. Mehlert, R. P. Saglia, R. Bender, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present long slit spectra for a magnitude limited sample of 35 E and S0 galaxies of the Coma cluster. The high quality of the data allowed us to derive spatially resolved spectra for a substantial sample of Coma galaxies for the first time. From these spectra we obtained rota- tion curves, the velocity dispersion profiles and the H3 and H4 coefficients of the Hermite decomposition of the line of sight velocity distribution. Moreover, we derive the radial line index profiles of Mg, Fe and Hβ line indices out to R ≈ 1re − 3re with high signal-to-noise ratio. We …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We present new optical (B, V , R, I) and radio (at 14.5, 8.5, and 4.8 GHz) observations of the γ-ray- loud blazar AO 0235+164 obtained during the high state of 1997 December-1998 January. The data were combined with historical light curves from the literature to study correlated optical and radio variations over a time span of more than 20 years. Flux variability with large and energy-dependent amplitude is observed at both wave bands, with the source varying over all timescales sampled (years-months- days), in agreement with previous reports. We have performed a cross-correlation analysis of optical and radio light …

A Wide Field 90 Cm Vla Image Of The Galactic Center Region, Ted La Rosa, Namir E. Kassim, Joseph W. Lazlo, Scott B. Hyman

Faculty Articles

We present a wide-field, high dynamic range, high-resolution, long-wavelength (lambda = 90 cm) VLA image of the Galactic center region. The image is centered on Sgr A, covers an area of 4 degrees x 5 degrees with an angular resolution of 43 ", and has a rms sensitivity of approximate to 5 mJy beam-l. The image was constructed from archival (1989 and 1991) VLA data of Pedlar et al. and Anantharamaiah et al. using new three-dimensional image restoration techniques. These three-dimensional imaging techniques resolve the problem of non-coplanar baselines encountered at long wavelengths and yield distortion-free imaging of far-field sources …

M35 (NGC 2168) is rich, young, and in some regards a better laboratory for stellar cluster research at 100 million years than the Pleiades. Yet, while M35 has been the subject of intriguing photometric, astrometric, and theoretical studies, to the best of our knowledge no published CCD-based photometry exists for this cluster. We have obtained relatively wide-field (23' x23') precise UBVRJ CCD photometry for M35 as part of the WIYN Open Cluster Study (WOCS) at the 0.9m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. The photometry extends from the main sequence turn off to beyond V = 19. We find that …

We present high-precision UBVRI CCD photometry of the old open cluster NGC 188. Our color-magnitude diagram extends from near the red giant branch tip to as faint as ~5 mag below the main-sequence turnoff. From an analysis of these data along with published photometry for M67, we draw the following conclusions: (1) From the UBV two-color diagram, we find a reddening of E(B ̶ V) = 0.04 ± 0.02 for M67 and E(B ̶ V) = 0.09 ± 0.02 for NGC 188. (2) Based on main-sequence fitting to solar abundance isochrones, the distance moduli …

We present optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the Type Ia SN 1998bu in the Leo I Group galaxy M96 (NGC 3368). The data set consists of 356 photometric measurements and 29 spectra of SN 1998bu between UT 1998 May 11 and July 15. The well-sampled light curve indicates the supernova reached maximum light in B on UT 1998 May 19.3 (JD 2450952.8^0.8) with B\12.22^0.03 and V \11.88^0.02. Application of a revised version of the Multicolor Light Curve Shape (MLCS) method yields an extinction toward the supernova of AV\0.94^0.15 mag, and indicates the supernova was of average luminosity compared …

The Pulsation Properties Of Procyon A, Brian Chaboyer, P. Demarque, D. B. Guenther Nov 1999

The Pulsation Properties Of Procyon A, Brian Chaboyer, P. Demarque, D. B. Guenther

Dartmouth Scholarship

A grid of stellar evolution models for Procyon A has been calculated. These models include the best physics available to us (including the latest opacities and equation of state) and are based on the revised astrometric mass of Girard et al. Models were calculated with helium diffusion and with the combined effects of helium and heavy-element diffusion. Oscillation frequencies for l = 0, 1, 2, and 3 p-modes and the characteristic period spacing for the g-modes were calculated for these models. We find that g-modes are sensitive to model parameters that effect the structure of the core, …

Stellar Masses, Kinematics, And White Dwarf Composition For Three Close Da+Dme Binaries, Stephane Vennes, John R. Thorstensen, Elisha F. Polomski

Dartmouth Scholarship

We determine the mass functions and mass ratios for three close white dwarf plus red dwarf binaries (EUVE J0720-317, 1016-053, and 2013+400). Hubble Space Telescope Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph spectra of the He II λ1640 and C IV λ1550 spectral lines trace the white dwarf orbital motion, and Hamilton Spectrograph echelle spectra (Lick Observatory) and lower dispersion spectra trace the red dwarf orbital motion. The data sets allow us to measure orbital periods and velocities, as well as the white dwarf gravitational redshifts. The red dwarf and white dwarf mass estimates obtained from a combination of independent mass measurements for the …

The Galactic Center Isolated Nonthermal Filaments As Analogs Of Cometary Plasma Tails, Steven N. Shore, Ted La Rosa Aug 1999

The Galactic Center Isolated Nonthermal Filaments As Analogs Of Cometary Plasma Tails, Steven N. Shore, Ted La Rosa

Faculty Articles

We propose a model for the origin of the isolated nonthermal filaments observed at the Galactic center based on an analogy to cometary plasma tails. We invoke the interaction between a large-scale magnetized galactic wind and embedded molecular clouds. As the advected wind magnetic field encounters a dense molecular cloud, it is impeded and drapes around the cloud, ultimately forming a current sheet in the wake. This draped held is further stretched by the wind flow into a long, thin filament the aspect ratio of which is determined by the balance between the dynamical wind and amplified magnetic field pressures. …

An Ultraviolet Fe Ii Image Of Sn 1885 In M31, Andrew Js Hamilton, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Ultraviolet imaging of the remnant of Supernova 1885 in M31 with the Hubble Space Telescope using the F255W filter on the WFPC2 reveals a dark spot of Fe II absorption at the remnant’s known position′′ ′′in the bulge of M31. The diameter of the absorbing spot is 0. 55 ± 0. 15, slightly smaller than, but′′ ′′consistent with, the 0. 70 ± 0. 05 diameter measured in the higher quality WFPC2 Ca II absorption image previously reported by us. The measured ratio of flux inside to outside SNR 1885 in the Fe IIimage is 0.24 ± 0.17, consistent with the …

Orbital Elements And Physical Parameters Of Ten Chromospherically Active Binary Stars, Francis C. Fekel, Klaus G. Strassmeier, Michael Weber, A. Washuettl Jun 1999

Orbital Elements And Physical Parameters Of Ten Chromospherically Active Binary Stars, Francis C. Fekel, Klaus G. Strassmeier, Michael Weber, A. Washuettl

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Orbital elements have been determined for 10 chromospherically active binaries from a combination of new velocities and velocities in the literature. First orbits for three binaries, HD 33363, HD 152178, and HD 208472, are presented, as well as updated orbits for seven other binaries. Two of the latter systems, LN Peg and HD 106225 were discovered to be triple, and both short- and long-period orbits have been computed for each. Fundamental properties have been determined for the chromopherically active primary in each system.

The Post–Common Envelope And Pre–Cataclysmic Binary Pg 1224+309, Jerome A. Orosz, Richard A. Wade, Jason J. B. Harlow, John R. Thorstensen, Cynthia J. Taylor, Michael Eracleous

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have made extensive spectroscopic and photometric observations of PG 1224+309, a close binary containing a DA white dwarf primary and an M4+ secondary. The Hα line is in emission due to irradiation of the M star by the hot white dwarf and is seen to vary around the orbit. From the radial velocities of the Hα line we derive a period of P = 0.258689 ± 0.000004 days and a semiamplitude of KHα = 160 ± 8 km s-1. We estimate a correction ΔK = 21 ± 2 km s-1, where KM …

A Dynamical Study Of The Non-Star-Forming Translucent Molecular Cloud Mbm 16: Evidence For Shear-Driven Turbulence In The Interstellar Medium, Ted La Rosa, Steven N. Shore, Loris Magnani

Faculty Articles

We present the results of a velocity correlation study of the high-latitude cloud MBM 16 using a fully sampled 12CO map, supplemented by new 13CO data. We find a correlation length of 0.4 pc. This is similar in size to the formaldehyde clumps described in our previous study. We associate this correlated motion with coherent structures within the turbulent flow. Such structures are generated by free shear flows. Their presence in this non-star-forming cloud indicates that kinetic energy is being supplied to the internal turbulence by an external shear flow. Such large-scale driving over long times is a possible solution …

Evolved, Single, Slowly Rotating . . . But Magnetically Active The G8-Giant Hr 1362 = Ek Eridani Revisited, Klaus G. Strassmeier, Kazimierz Stępień, Gregory W. Henry, Douglas S. Hall

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We rediscuss the unusual case of the slowly rotating late-type giant HR 1362, which exhibits a very unusual high level of magnetic activity. New BVRI photometry from two robotic telescopes from 1991 through 1998 together with previously published photometric data gives a very precise photometric period of 306.9±0.4 days. With the aid of high-resolution (R=120,000) optical spectra and the Hipparcos parallax we redetermine the absolute parameters of HR 1362 and find it to be a single G8IV-III star of 14 L and a mass of 1.85 M with Teff=5125 K, log g=3.25, and solar abundances. Lithium is not significantly different …

We have determined the visual orbit for the spectroscopic binary ι Pegasi with interferometric visibility data obtained by the Palomar Testbed Interferometer in 1997. ι Peg is a double-lined binary system whose minimum masses and spectral typing suggests the possibility of eclipses. Our orbital and component diameter determinations do not favor the eclipse hypothesis: the limb-to-limb separation of the two components is 0.151±0.069 mas at conjunction. Our conclusion that the ι Peg system does not eclipse is supported by high-precision photometric observations. The physical parameters implied by our visual orbit and the spectroscopic orbit of Fekel & Tomkin are in …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present multilongitude, multicolor photometry and simultaneous high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of the newly discovered γ Doradus variables HD 62454 and HD 68192. From combined Johnson and Strömgren data, we are able to identify five independent periods in HD 62454 and two stable periods in HD 68192. The data presented are sufficient to rule out all physically meaningful types of variations, with the one exception of the high-order, low-degree, nonradial gravity-mode pulsations that are believed to be at work in γ Doradus stars. We also find that HD 62454 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary and we present an orbital solution.

Cluster Versus Field Elliptical Galaxies And Clues On Their Formation, Mariangela Bernardi, Alvio Renzini, Luiz N. Da Costa, Gary Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Using new observations for a sample of 931 early-type galaxies, we investigate whether the Mg2-σ0 relation shows any dependence on the local environment. The galaxies have been assigned to three different environments depending on the local overdensity (clusters, groups, and field); we used our complete redshift database to guide the assignment of galaxies. It is found that cluster, group, and field early-type galaxies follow almost identical Mg2-σ0 relations, with the largest Mg2 zero-point difference (clusters minus field) being only 0.007±0.002 mag. No correlation of the residuals is found with the morphological type or …

A Search For Lithium-Rich Giants Among Stars With Infrared Excesses, Francis C. Fekel, Lyndon C. Watson

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

The unusual nature of the single, rapidly rotating, lithium-rich K giant HDE 233517, which is currently undergoing significant mass loss, prompted a search for giants with similar properties. High-dispersion spectroscopic observations were obtained of HD 219025, a known lithium-rich infrared-excess giant, plus 39 stars from a list of G and K giants with excess far-infrared emission. The projected rotational velocities of the vast majority of infrared-excess giants appear to be similar to those of normal G and K giants. Six giants have lithium abundances at or above theoretical upper envelope values. The percentage of such stars in the sample of …

Hubble Space Telescope Images And Spectra Of The Remnant Of Sn 1885 In M31, Robert A. Fesen, Christopher L. Gerardy, Kevin M. Mclin, Andrew J. S. Hamilton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Near-UV Hubble Space Telescope images of the remnant of SN 1885 (S And) in M31 show a 070±005 diameter absorption disk silhouetted against M31's central bulge, at SN 1885's historically reported position. The disk's size corresponds to a linear diameter of 2.5±0.4 pc at a distance of 725±70 kpc, implying an average expansion velocity of 11,000±2000 km s-1 over 110 yr. Low-dispersion Faint Object Spectrograph spectra over 3200-4800 Å reveal that the absorption arises principally from Ca II H and K (equivalent width 215 Å), with weaker absorption features of Ca I 4227 Å and Fe I 3720 Å. The …

Wiyn Open Cluster Study. I. Deep Photometry Of Ngc188, Ted Von Hippel, Ata Sarajedini

Publications

We have employed precise and carefully calibrated V - and I - band photometry of NGC 188 at WIYN Observatory to explore the cluster luminosity function (LF) and study the cluster white dwarfs. Our photometry is offset by V = 0.052 (fainter) from that of Sandage and Eggen & Sandage. All published photometry for the past three decades has been based on these two calibrations, which are in error by 0.05 ± 0.01. We employ the Pinsonneault et al. fiducial open cluster main sequence to derive a distance modulus of 11.43 ± 0.08 and E(B - V )=0.09, with …

Detection Of Intergalactic Red-Giant-Branch Stars In The Virgo Cluster, Henry C. Ferguson, Ted Von Hippel, Nial R. Tanvir

Publications

It has been suspected for nearly 50 years that clusters of galaxies contain a population of intergalactic stars, ripped from galaxies during cluster formation or when the galaxies’ orbits take them through the cluster center. Support for the existence of such a population of free-floating stars comes from measurements of the diffuse light in clusters and from recent detections of planetary nebulae with positions and/or velocities far removed from any observed cluster galaxy. 10 , 11 But estimates for the mass of the diffuse population and its distribution relative to the galaxies are still highly uncertain. Here we report the …

Semi-Automated Extraction Of Digital Objective Prism Spectra, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones, Ted Von Hippel, Mike Irwin

Publications

We describe a method for the extraction of spectra from high dispersion objective prism plates. Our method is a catalogue driven plate solution approach, making use of the Right Ascension and Declination coordinates for the target objects. In contrast to existing methods of photographic plate reduction, we digitize the entire plate and extract spectra off-line. This approach has the advantages that it can be applied to CCD objective prism images, and spectra can be re-extracted (or additional spectra extracted) without having to re-scan the plate. After a brief initial interactive period, the subsequent reduction procedure is completely automatic, resulting in …

Production Of Energy-Dependent Time Delays In Impulsive Solar Flare Hard X-Ray Emission By Short-Duration Spectral Index Variations, Ted N. La Rosa, Steven N. Shore Aug 1998

Production Of Energy-Dependent Time Delays In Impulsive Solar Flare Hard X-Ray Emission By Short-Duration Spectral Index Variations, Ted N. La Rosa, Steven N. Shore

Faculty Articles

Cross-correlation techniques have been used recently to study the relative timing of solar flare hard X-ray emission at different energies. These studies find that for the majority of the impulsive flares observed with BATSE there is a systematic time delay of a few tens of milliseconds between low (approximate to 50 keV) and higher energy emission (approximate to 100 keV). These time delays have been interpreted as energy-dependent time-of-flight differences for electron propagation from the corona, where they are accelerated, to the chromosphere, where the bulk of the hard X-rays are emitted. We show in this paper that crosscorrelation methods …

Hot White Dwarfs In The Extreme ‐ Ultraviolet Explorer Survey. Iv. Da White Dwarfs With Bright Companions, Stephane Vennes, Damian J. Christian, John R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present an analysis of optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray spectral properties of a sample of 13 hot hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs, each paired with a luminous unresolved companion. Using low-dispersion International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra, ROSAT photometry, and Extreme-Ultraviolet Explorer photometry and spectroscopy, we estimate the effective temperature, mass, and distance of the white dwarfs. Additionally, we examine the question of their atmospheric composition. We establish orbital properties for most binaries by means of high-dispersion optical spectroscopy obtained with the Hamilton echelle spectrograph at Lick Observatory; the same data help uncover evidence of activity in some of the secondary …

Physical Properties Of The Binary Star 12 Persei, David J. Barlow, Colin D. Scarfe, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have obtained new radial velocities of the double-lined spectroscopic binary star 12 Persei, whose period is 331 days, and which has been resolved in recent years by speckle interferometry. We derive a solution for the orbital elements from the speckle and radial velocity data simultaneously, and find from that solution masses of 1.306 ± 0.035 and 1.172 ± 0.030 M☉ for the components, and an orbital parallax of 0farcs04224 ± 0farcs00056. We also determine spectroscopically the difference in magnitude between the components and, hence, their absolute magnitudes. We estimate their spectral types and individual colors by fitting standard-star colors …

Aquila X-1: A Low-Inclination Soft X-Ray Transient, T. Shahbaz, J. R. Thorstensen, P. A. Charles, N. D. Sherman

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have obtained I-band photometry of the neutron star X-ray transient Aql X-1 during quiescence. We find a periodicity at 2.487 cycles d−1, which we interpret as twice the orbital frequency (19.30±0.05 h). Folding the data on the orbital period, we model the light-curve variations as the ellipsoidal modulation of the secondary star. We determine the binary inclination to be 20°–30° (90 per cent confidence) and also determine the 95 per cent upper limits to the radial velocity semi-amplitude and rotational broadening of the secondary star to be 117 and 50 km s−1, respectively.

PG 1002+506 is found to be a Be star, one of three found so far by the Palomar-Green survey. Its spectrum is classified as a B5 ± 1 Ve, with Teff = 14,900 ± 1200, log g = 4.2 ± 0.2, and v sin i = 340 ± 50 km s-1. At b = +51°, its height above the Galactic plane would therefore be z = +10.8 kpc, putting this apparently young, rapidly rotating star well into the Galactic halo. Its heliocentric radial velocity is found to be -2 ± 15 km s-1, consistent with …

Observationally, white dwarf stars are a remarkably homogeneous class with a minimum observed Teff ~4000 K. Theoretically, the physics that determines their cooling timescales is relatively more straightforward than that which determines main-sequence evolutionary timescales. As a result, the white dwarf luminosity function has for the last decade been used as a probe of the age and star formation rate of the Galactic disk, providing an estimated local disk age of ~10 Gyr with estimated total uncertainties of roughly 20%. A long-standing criticism of the technique is that the reality of the reported downturn in the luminosity function (LF) …
