On The True Interstellar Anisotropy Of Tev Cosmic Rays And Its Implications For The Local Interstellar Medium, Noufel D. Maalal
On The True Interstellar Anisotropy Of Tev Cosmic Rays And Its Implications For The Local Interstellar Medium, Noufel D. Maalal
Theses and Dissertations
Several ground-based cosmic ray (CR) air shower experiments have produced sky maps of intensity anisotropy in the energy range from 1 TeV to a few hundred TeVs with very high statistics and angular resolution. These measurements provide opportunities to study CR sources and propagation in the interstellar medium (ISM). Such studies present two major difficulties. Firstly, CRs are deflected by the heliospheric magnetic field on the last stretch of their journey to Earth. Secondly, measurements at different latitudes are difficult to compare, leading to uncertainties in latitudinal variations on the order of the observed anisotropy. Experiments usually assume latitudinal variations …
1d Crust-Magnetosphere Coupling Model For Magnetars, Kennedy M. Jeter
1d Crust-Magnetosphere Coupling Model For Magnetars, Kennedy M. Jeter
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Magnetars are the most extremely magnetized objects in the universe. Their strong magnetic fields generate high-energy magnetic flares with instantaneous luminosity that can outshine their host galaxy. Previous works have explored how Hall drift in the crust affects the dynamics of magnetic field lines in the magnetosphere. This work investigates how a change in the magnetosphere, such as a flare or an outburst, can excite Hall evolution in the crust. We investigate how the twisting and untwisting of magnetic field lines in a magnetar’s magnetosphere launches Hall waves through its crust using a one-dimensional numerical model. We use the Dedalus …
Intermediate-Scale Outflow Dynamics Of Eta Carinae, Edmund J. Garcia, Matthew C. Fleenor
Intermediate-Scale Outflow Dynamics Of Eta Carinae, Edmund J. Garcia, Matthew C. Fleenor
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
η Carinae (η Car) is a binary system, with the larger star being an extremely massive, luminous blue variable (LBV) beyond the Eddington Limit. Surrounding the η Car system, numerous multi-wavelength imaging campaigns reveal axisymmetric structures with the expanding bipolar Homunculus Nebula (¡1 pc). In combination with the episodic eruptive history of the η Car system, our initial intermediate-scale imaging revealed further axisym- metric structures (1-5 pc). To gain a more expansive view of how the small scale structure connects to panoramic imaging of the η Car region, we constructed a deep, optical, narrowband mosaic of 189 images utilizing the …

The new Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) Solar Telescope represents a campus-wide collaboration to design and install a high-resolution solar observatory. The ERAU solar telescope, aiming for first light by Summer 2026, will integrate research-grade instrumentation, student training opportunities, and expand public engagement with the ERAU observatory. The telescope is housed within a 2.3-meter refurbished dome structure whose electrical and structural systems are being upgraded to support automated dome rotation and environmental stabilization. The optical design features a multi-element lens and mirror assembly optimized for a 1° field of view. The optical assembly includes a downport centered in the dome that …
An Application Of Molecular Dynamics To Hed Plasma Physics: Point And Group Defect Diffusion In Coulomb Crystals, Levi Webb
Theses and Dissertations
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to explore the microscopic behaviors of complex systems that cannot be easily studied experimentally. In particular, the microphysics of high energy density (HED) astrophysical plasma environments remain inaccessible by modern experiment---even in laser facilities, these plasmas exist only on short timescales that do not lend easily to investigation. The diffusion of point and group defects through crystallized plasmas in the cores of white dwarfs and neutron star crusts, called Coulomb crystals, has potentially macroscopic implications for the evolution of these bodies. Thus, I employ the widely-used MD code LAMMPS to simulate small Coulomb crystal …
Stars And Shapes: An Investigation Of Stripped Envelope Supernovae Structures Using Spectropolarimetry Observations And Hydrodynamic Models, Sabrina Desoto
Stars And Shapes: An Investigation Of Stripped Envelope Supernovae Structures Using Spectropolarimetry Observations And Hydrodynamic Models, Sabrina Desoto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Supernovae (SNe) are the energetic deaths of massive stars, dispersing heavy elements throughout the galaxies and shaping cosmic evolution across the universe. However, understanding the connections between the evolution of massive stars, their catastrophic demises, and the myriad of observed SNe, remains a fundamental challenge in astrophysics. My work aims to narrow this gap by integrating extensive observational data with advanced hydrodynamical simulations to better interpret SNe observations and understand the origin of their geometry. The observational component utilizes the largest spectropolarimetry dataset of stripped-envelope (SE) core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) gathered by the SNSPOL project. Analyzing nine Type Ib and eleven …

Determining The 17f(Α,P)20ne Reaction Rate For Application In Type I X-Ray Bursts, William Braverman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The 17F(α, p)20Ne reaction has been identified as an alternate pathway for breakout from the hot-CNO cycle that can be important in some X-ray burst scenarios. The 17F(α, p)20Ne reaction rate was previously determined through a parameterized exponential S-factor with a large enhancement from thermally-excited states based on statistical models with large uncertainties. We have measured the time-inverse 20Ne(p,α)17F cross section at center-of-mass energies ranging from 5.50 to 7.10 MeV using an activation method with a proton beam on a neon gas cell. Coincident detections of 511-keV γ-rays, resulting from electron-positron …
Examining Mulit-Wavelength Variability And Magnetic Interactions In The Polar St Lmi, Cain Rinkoski
Examining Mulit-Wavelength Variability And Magnetic Interactions In The Polar St Lmi, Cain Rinkoski
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
Cataclysmic variable (CV) stars are interacting binary systems that exhibit exotic, multi-wavelength behavior driven by mass transfer from a donor star onto a white dwarf. As rich laboratories for accretion physics, binary dynamics, and the origins of Type Ia supernovae, CVs have been well studied in the X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared—but remain comparatively underexplored in the radio regime. This paper presents simultaneous, time-resolved optical and radio observations of the magnetic CV ST LMi, aimed at constraining its emission mechanisms and orbital modulation.
The optical light curves display brightness variations of approximately 1.31 ± 0.02 magnitudes on a period of …
Nonlinear Wave Dynamics In Asteroseismology With Application To Delta Scuti Stars, Mohammed Mourabit
Nonlinear Wave Dynamics In Asteroseismology With Application To Delta Scuti Stars, Mohammed Mourabit
Physics Dissertations - Archive
This thesis compiles the collection of works in nonlinear astroseismology and its implication to the δ Sct variable that we carried over the course of five years. With the advent of high-resolution space missions such as the Kepler and TESS telescopes, we were able to see significant progress in the field in recent years. Nonetheless the new technologies also brought an increasing number of observation that are seemingly contradictory to the linear theory of asteroseismology. In particular, we find the δ Sct variable, which eludes our models in terms of how varied we find they spectra for stars with very …
Constraining Accreted Neutron Star Crust Shallow Heating With The Inferred Depth Of Carbon Ignition In X-Ray Superbursts, Zachary P. Meisel
Constraining Accreted Neutron Star Crust Shallow Heating With The Inferred Depth Of Carbon Ignition In X-Ray Superbursts, Zachary P. Meisel
Faculty Publications
Evidence has accumulated for an as-yet unaccounted for source of heat located at shallow depths within the accreted neutron star crust. However, the nature of this heat source is unknown. I demonstrate that the inferred depth of carbon ignition in X-ray superbursts can be used as an additional constraint for the magnitude and depth of shallow heating. The inferred shallow heating properties are relatively insensitive to the assumed crust composition and carbon fusion reaction rate. For low-accretion rates, the results are weakly dependent on the duration of the accretion outburst, so long as accretion has ensued for enough time to …
Nuclear Physics And Neutron Stars: Structure Of Compact Stellar Objects, Michel Geralddi Coria Magaña
Nuclear Physics And Neutron Stars: Structure Of Compact Stellar Objects, Michel Geralddi Coria Magaña
2024 REYES Proceedings
The Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations provide a theoretical framework for modeling the structure of neutron stars and white dwarfs in hydrostatic equilibrium. Using Python and MATLAB, we simulate the mass-radius relationship, pressure, and density profiles of these compact stars, focusing on how ionized plasma dynamics contribute to their stability. By incorporating particle simulations into the visualization process, we model the internal forces of neutron stars and white dwarfs, demonstrating how computational tools offer unique insights into these celestial objects. The results align well with theoretical predictions and provide a solid foundation for future studies incorporating additional physical effects such as magnetic …
A Computational Study On The Structural Limits Of Neutron Stars Under Relativistic Conditions And Nuclear Phenomena, Marcelo Siles
A Computational Study On The Structural Limits Of Neutron Stars Under Relativistic Conditions And Nuclear Phenomena, Marcelo Siles
2024 REYES Proceedings
This project investigates the modeling of neutron stars and white dwarfs using polytropic equations of state and relativistic corrections. By integrating relativistic effects into the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations, we obtain more accurate predictions of neutron star properties, including mass-radius relationships and neutron degeneracy pressure. Non-relativistic models are inadequate under high pressures. Considering nucleon-nucleon interactions suggests that neutron stars can surpass the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit, theoretically reaching masses up to 2.3 𝑀⊙. However, empirical data supports a more realistic mass range of 1.5 to 2.3 𝑀⊙. The inclusion of neutron star crust modeling refines these predictions, indicating possible …

Possible Evidences For Existence Of An Aether Medium (Or Virtual Inertia/Spin Superfluid Medium), Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
The presentation explores the possibility of an aether medium, also referred to as a virtual inertia/spin superfluid medium, existing to explain certain physical phenomena. While the concept of an aether has been historically rejected by mainstream physics, recent findings and interpretations offer potential justifications for its reconsideration. After discussions with several physicists, notably Robert N. Boyd, PhD and others, we are convinced that aether medium does exist, or may be called virtual inertia/spin superfluid medium.

Understanding The Nature Of Pulsars And Characterizing Propagation Effects Using Pulsar Timing, Pratik Kumar
Understanding The Nature Of Pulsars And Characterizing Propagation Effects Using Pulsar Timing, Pratik Kumar
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Pulsars are highly magnetized stellar remnants, among the densest known objects, and primarily produce radio emission in the form of lighthouse beams sweeping across the line of sight as a regular train of pulses. Apart from providing tests for matter in high-density regimes, general relativity, and plasma emission; perhaps the most notable characteristic is their applicability as precise astronomical clocks to measure various effects. Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) are galactic scale detectors analogous to ground-based detectors of Gravitational Waves (GWs) like LIGO, with the aim of detecting low-frequency nano-Hz GWs from coalescing binary supermassive black holes. PTAs consist of a …
Constraining H0 Via Extragalactic Parallax, Nicholas Ferree
Constraining H0 Via Extragalactic Parallax, Nicholas Ferree
Honors Theses
We examine the prospects for measurement of the Hubble parameter 𝐻0 via observation of the secular parallax of other galaxies due to our own motion relative to the cosmic microwave background rest frame. Peculiar velocities make distance measurements to individual galaxies highly uncertain, but a survey sampling many galaxies can still yield a precise 𝐻0 measurement. We use both a Fisher information formalism and simulations to forecast errors in 𝐻0 from such surveys, marginalizing over the unknown peculiar velocities. The optimum survey observes ∼ 102 galaxies within a redshift 𝐻0max = 0.06. The required errors …
A Theoretical Study Of Elementary Processes In Interstellar Plasma, Joshua Forer
A Theoretical Study Of Elementary Processes In Interstellar Plasma, Joshua Forer
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Interstellar plasma — interstellar clouds in particular — play an important role in determining the structure and evolution of galaxies. Understanding the time evolution of such plasmas requires knowledge of the chemical processes that drive their dynamics. Two processes are studied in this dissertation: radiative electron attachment (REA) via dipole-bound states (DBSs) and dissociative recombination (DR). Of the several hundred molecules detected in the interstellar medium, only eight anions have been detected: CN-, C3N-, C5N-, C7N-, C4H-, C6H-, C8H-, and C10H-. Their production mechanism is not well known; REA was suggested as a possible formation pathway, but previous theoretical studies …
First-Principles Study Of Doping Effects On Ferroelectricity And On Rashba Spin Splitting, Zegnet Yimer Muhammed
First-Principles Study Of Doping Effects On Ferroelectricity And On Rashba Spin Splitting, Zegnet Yimer Muhammed
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we have thoroughly studied the effect of chemical and charge dopingon ferroelectrics (PbTiO3 and BaTiO3) and Rashba type semiconductor (BiTeI). In the first project, We investigate the polar instability and soft modes in electron-doped PbTiO3 using linear-response density functional calculations. Because, metallicity and ferroelectric-like polar distortion are mutually non-compatible, and their coexistence in the same system is an intriguing subject of fundamental interest in the field of structure phase transition. However, it is unclear what mechanism may extend the limit of metallicity that allows polar distortion. We find that ferroelectric instability can remarkably sustain up to an …
A Method For Exploring The Habitability Of Earth-Like Exoplanets: Applications To Tess Objects Of Interest 203 B, 256 B, And 700 D, Paul Bonney
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has and is continuing to discover a multitude of potentially habitable planet candidates. As more planets are detected and confirmed, it becomes increasingly important to strategically search for signs of habitability with which to differentiate and prioritize them for further observation, in particular with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). To facilitate this, I have created a method for prioritizing TESS planet candidates based on parameters derived from their light curves and have applied the method to the TESS Candidate Target List (CTL). This data set uses preliminary fits to transit modeling which can …
The Cosmic History Of X-Ray Binary Evolution, Woodrow Gilbertson
The Cosmic History Of X-Ray Binary Evolution, Woodrow Gilbertson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Chandra Deep Fields provide an extraordinary window into the high-energy history of the cosmos. Observations of non-active galaxies within the deep fields can be leveraged to extract information about the formation and evolution of X-ray binaries (XRBs). Previous studies have suggested that the evolution of XRB luminosity can be expressed a function of physical parameters such as star formation rate, stellar mass, stellar age, and metallicity. The goal of this work is to develop and implement a complete physical parameterization for the luminosity of XRB populations, which can be utilized for a variety of further studies.

Molecular Line Search In Archival Alma Imaging Of M87, Xueyi Li
Macalester Journal of Physics and Astronomy
We present a molecular line search in spectral imaging of the elliptical galaxy M87 using archival data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). The primary goal of this project is to verify and characterize possible CO transition lines, which can be used for future studies to determine the dynamics of the system, or the mass of the supermassive black hole (BH) in the center of the galaxy. After performing extensive atmospheric modeling, we found that most of the absorption features have a corresponding atmospheric ozone transition, so it is unlikely that these features are either Galactic or extragalactic. We …
Emergent Spectra Of Young X-Ray Emitting Populations Across Environments, Alex Siebenmorgen
Emergent Spectra Of Young X-Ray Emitting Populations Across Environments, Alex Siebenmorgen
Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses
We construct reasonably accurate models of the X-Ray spectra of a multitude of sources in M51. We construct both average and individual models for the sources, which are split into 16 groups as the counts per source increases. Then, we create a plot to show how the model-predicted values of column density (nH) and photon index (gamma) change with luminosity. These models will be used to create an accurate X-Ray stellar energy distribution (SED) for M51, and to better understand how the SED changes with environmental factors like metallicity and star formation rate (SFR).

Exploring The Glow Of The Universe In Gamma-Rays And Hunting Distant Agn, Changam Meenakshi Rajagopal
All Dissertations
The entirety of the γ-ray radiation permeating our Universe is encoded in the extragalactic γ-ray background. This is a superposition of resolved sources, mostly powerful relativistic jets powered by supermassive black holes, i.e., blazars, and an unresolved isotropic component, aka, the diffuse isotropic gamma-ray background (IGRB). Studying the IGRB can help unveil its composition, as well as unearth multi-messenger relationships between the intensities of PeV neutrinos, ultra high energy cosmic rays (> 1018 eV), and sub-TeV γ-rays. The comparable energy budgets of these three phenomena (neutrinos, UHECR, and γ-rays) indicates a physical connection or a common source amongst them. On …
The Meaning Of Dark, Light And Shadows: Inferences In Art, Materiality And Cultural Practices, Frank Prendergast
The Meaning Of Dark, Light And Shadows: Inferences In Art, Materiality And Cultural Practices, Frank Prendergast
Book/Book Chapter
Our visual awareness relies on light acting on the eye to perceive materiality and colour. Medieval thought wrestled to articulate and comprehend its nature. The notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, for example, included his descriptions to define light and make comparisons so as to differentiate between light and shadow. His focus was on the illumination of surfaces from the perspective of a painter, seeing shadows as ‘the diminution of light by the intervention of an opaque body’ and ‘the counterpart of luminous rays’. In his mind, a shadow ‘stood between light and darkness’, with darkness being ‘the absence of light’. …

Osiris-Rex Surface Imaging To Constrain Properties Of The Asteroid (101955) Bennu, Alicia Allen
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study used images taken from the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft sample-return mission and projected onto a three-dimensional shape model to determine surface properties of the asteroid (101955) Bennu. Two major projects were completed. For the first project, images of the pre-sampled Nightingale site and post-sampled Nightingale were compared to determine how the TAGSAM sampling maneuver effected the surface of the asteroid directly at the sampling site and in the surrounding area. This analysis demonstrated how spacecraft can potentially affect a small body during this and future sample-return missions. For the second project, several craters on Bennu’s surface were selected and all …

Using Methanol Masers To Probe High Mass Star Forming Regions, Naomi S. Shechter, Anuj P. Sarma
DePaul Discoveries
Compared to low mass stars, the formation of high mass stars is not well understood. To understand better how high mass stars form, we can utilize masers, naturally amplified point sources of microwave radiation. One example is the methanol maser, which falls into two categories. Class I methanol masers form in the bipolar outflows from the protostar, and Class II masers form in the accretion disk. Their compact size and intensity make them an excellent source of information about the process of high mass star formation. We compiled a modest database of Class I and II methanol masers through a …

The purpose of this project was to study the open star cluster NGC2204 using images taken at Kitt Peak National Observatory using the WIYN 0.9m telescope. These images were analyzed photometrically with the intention of determining the reddening, metallicity, age, and distance modulus of the star cluster. Each image was analyzed using software that determined the point spread function and applied that function to determine the magnitude of each star in that image. These magnitudes were taken for each filter, UBVRI, and then combined and averaged to create a single catalog. Standard stars, taken on the same night, were used …

A Detailed X-Ray Analysis Of The Cold Front In Relics Cluster A2163, Anne Poy
CMC Senior Theses
Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound objects in the Universe. Studying them can teach us about how they merge and grow, which in turn provides unparalleled information about the history of the evolution of the Universe. X-ray observations of galaxy clusters have uncovered substructure in the hot, X-ray emitting gas known as the intracluster mediums (ICM). Substructure indicates that the ICM has been churned up, possibly by a significant off-axis merger event. This substructure includes cold fronts, sloshing spirals, and shocks. We present deep Chandra observations of the merging cluster Abell 2163. We investigate the global spectrum and find …

We present Herschel SPIRE and PACS maps of the Cepheus Flare clouds L1157, L1172, L1228, L1241, and L1251, observed by the Herschel Gould Belt Survey of nearby star-forming molecular clouds. Through modified blackbody fits to the SPIRE and PACS data, we determine typical cloud column densities of (0.5–1.0) × 1021 cm−2 and typical cloud temperatures of 14–15 K. Using the getsources identification algorithm, we extract 832 dense cores from the SPIRE and PACS data at 160–500 μm. From placement in a mass versus size diagram, we consider 303 to be candidate prestellar cores, and 178 of these …
