The Fe Kα fluorescence line emission in X-ray spectra is a powerful diagnostic tool for various astrophysical objects to reveal the distribution of cold matter around photoionizing sources. The advent of the X-ray microcalorimeter on board the XRISM satellite will bring new constraints on the emission line. We present one of the first such results for the high-mass X-ray binary Centaurus X-3, which is composed of an O-type star and a neutron star (NS). We conducted a 155 ks observation covering an entire binary orbit. A weak Fe Kα line was detected in all orbital phases at an equivalent width …

XTE J1829−098 is a transient X-ray pulsar with a period of ∼7.8 s. It is a candidate Be star system, although the evidence for this is not yet definitive. We investigated the twenty-year-long X-ray light curve using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array (PCA), Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope, and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image. We find that all three light curves are clearly modulated on the ∼244 days orbital period previously reported from PCA monitoring observations, with outbursts confined to a narrow phase range. The light curves also show that XTE J1829−098 was in …

Constraining Accreted Neutron Star Crust Shallow Heating With The Inferred Depth Of Carbon Ignition In X-Ray Superbursts, Zachary P. Meisel Nov 2024

Constraining Accreted Neutron Star Crust Shallow Heating With The Inferred Depth Of Carbon Ignition In X-Ray Superbursts, Zachary P. Meisel

Faculty Publications

Evidence has accumulated for an as-yet unaccounted for source of heat located at shallow depths within the accreted neutron star crust. However, the nature of this heat source is unknown. I demonstrate that the inferred depth of carbon ignition in X-ray superbursts can be used as an additional constraint for the magnitude and depth of shallow heating. The inferred shallow heating properties are relatively insensitive to the assumed crust composition and carbon fusion reaction rate. For low-accretion rates, the results are weakly dependent on the duration of the accretion outburst, so long as accretion has ensued for enough time to …

Pulsey: Stellar Pulsation Models In Python, Andrew Ayala

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The era of the Kepler/K2 and TESS space-telescope missions has inundated the astrophysics community with photometric data for millions of stars with continuous observation and very high cadence. This data confirms that nearly every observed stellar source exhibits an oscillating luminosity, with stellar pulsation being the driving mechanism behind a large fraction of the cause. The result has been an explosion in the field of asteroseismology, where the recorded luminosity variations, or "light curves", of pulsating stars to probe their interior structures. By modeling observed light curves, we can constrain values of the physical stellar parameters producing them. The brightness …

The Advanced X-ray Imaging Satellite (AXIS) promises revolutionary science in the X-ray and multi-messenger time domain. AXIS will leverage excellent spatial resolution (< 1.5 arcsec), sensitivity (80× that of Swift), and a large collecting area (5–10× that of Chandra) across a 24-arcmin diameter field of view at soft X-ray energies (0.3–10.0 keV) to discover and characterize a wide range of X-ray transients from supernova-shock breakouts to tidal disruption events to highly variable supermassive black holes. The observatory’s ability to localize and monitor faint X-ray sources opens up new opportunities to hunt for counterparts to distant binary neutron star mergers, fast radio bursts, and exotic phenomena like fast X-ray transients. AXIS will offer a response time of < 2 h to community alerts, enabling studies of gravitational wave sources, high-energy neutrino emitters, X-ray binaries, magnetars, and other targets of opportunity. This white paper highlights some of the discovery science that will be driven by AXIS in this burgeoning field of time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. This White Paper is part of a series commissioned for the AXIS Probe Concept Mission; additional AXIS White Papers can be found at the AXIS website.

Identifying The O’Connell Effect In Eclipsing Binary Stars, Nicholas Paolella Jul 2024

Identifying The O’Connell Effect In Eclipsing Binary Stars, Nicholas Paolella

Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty

Data science techniques have wide-ranging applications throughout scientific explorations. One, is filtering astronomical data to better understand specific populations, such as binary stars. Specifically, binary stars that exhibit the O’Connell effect are worthy of study as this phenomenon is still not well understood. The O’Connell effect can be defined as the asymmetry of maxima in the light curves, as captured by the instrument, while observing the eclipsing binary system in question. There is significant data captured by NASA and curated by Villanova University, which enabled the investigation of eclipsing binary stars and the attributes of which may help identify the …

Rising Tides: An Analytic Modeling Code Of Tidal Effects In Binary Neutron Star Mergers, Alexander O'Dell, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton

Physics Faculty Research

Gravitational waves produced by binary neutron star mergers offer a unique window into matter behavior under extreme conditions. In this context, we analytically model the effect of matter on gravitational waves from binary neutron star mergers. We start with a binary black hole system, leveraging the post-Newtonian formalism for the inspiral and the Backwards-one-Body model for the merger. We combine the two methods to generate a baseline waveform and we validate our results against numerical relativity simulations. Next, we integrate tidal effects in phase and amplitude to account for matter and spacetime interaction using the NRTidal model and test its …

Context. The high-mass X-ray binary system GX 301−2 is a persistent source with a well-known variable cyclotron line centered at 35 keV. Recently, a second cyclotron line at 50 keV has been reported with a presumably different behavior than the 35 keV line. Aims. We investigate the presence of the newly discovered cyclotron line in the phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectra at higher luminosities than before. We further aim to determine the pulse-phase variability of both lines.

Methods. We analyze a NuSTAR observation of GX 301−2 covering the pre-periastron flare, where the source luminosity reached its peak of ∼4×1037 …

Using Gaussian Processes To Measure M-Dwarf Rotation Periods From Ground-Based Light Curves, Ryan J. Lebron Jun 2024

Using Gaussian Processes To Measure M-Dwarf Rotation Periods From Ground-Based Light Curves, Ryan J. Lebron

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Stellar rotation is a readily observable characteristic that plays a crucial role in the generation and activity of magnetic fields through a process known as a magnetic dynamo. For low mass main sequence stars, they exhibit fully convective interiors, giving rise to a distinct dynamo mechanism compared to solar-type stars. Examining the rotational speeds of these stars can offer valuable insights into the workings of these mechanisms. To measure these rotation periods, we developed a pipeline to analyze 192 archival light curves of low mass stars observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) by utilizing a combination of Lomb-Scargle and …

Illustris-Tng Simulated Central Black Mass(Mbh) And Galaxy Properties Correlations With A Machine Learning Approach, Imani L. Dindy

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Observationaly it is well established that the masses of central black holes are tightly correlated with galaxy properties, most notably the bulge’s velocity dispersion. Cosmolog- ical hydrodynamical simulations can capture most of these correlations, but it is yet not understood why this occurs. To gain greater insight into central black hole growth we use machine learning algorithms to study the relationship between central black hole mass(MBH) and other galaxy properties at z=0 in the TNG simulations. We find that the central black hole mass can be accurately predicted with just a few galaxy properties only if the central black hole …

High-resolution X-ray spectra of π Aqr, a γ Cas-type star, obtained with the Chandra/HETG spectrometer, revealed emission lines of H-like ions of Mg, Si, S, and Fe; a strong, hard continuum; and a lack of He-like ions, indicating the presence of very hot thermal plasma. The X-ray light curve showed significant fluctuations, with coherent variability at a period of about 3400 s in one observation. The hardness ratio was relatively constant except for one observation in which the spectrum was much harder and more absorbed. We interpret the X-ray emission as arising from accretion onto the secondary, which is likely …

Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect In The Intra-Cluster Medium, Nathan Fronk May 2024

Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect In The Intra-Cluster Medium, Nathan Fronk

Senior Seminars and Capstones

This paper covers the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, it’s derivation, and it’s applications in astronomy. The effect is a result of inverse Compton scattering in a cloud of hot charged particles, causing an increase in the temperature of the the cosmic microwave background radiation passing through the cloud. This change in temperature can be measured, and used to calculate the physical properties of the structure in question. This paper focuses on the a method used by Adam et al. (2017) to find a temperature map of the intra-cluster medium.

Energy Dependence Of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations In Accreting X-Ray Pulsars, Hemanth Manikantan, Biswajit Paul, Rahul Sharma, Pragati Pradhan, Vikram Rana

Publications

We present the results from an investigation of the energy dependence of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) exhibited by accreting X-ray pulsars using data from archival XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, RXTE, and NICER observations. In a search for the presence of QPOs in 99 XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations, we detected QPOs in eleven observations of five sources, viz., 4U 1626–67 (48 mHz), IGR J19294+1816 (30 mHz), V 0332+53 (2, 18, and 40 mHz), Cen X–3 (30 mHz), and XTE J1858+034 (180 mHz). A positive correlation of the QPO rms amplitude with energy is exhibited by 4U 1626–67, IGR J19294+1816, Cen X–3 and XTE J1858+034, …

A Search For Pulsars And An Exploration Of Dispersion Measure Within The Milky Way Galaxy, Emily Ware May 2024

A Search For Pulsars And An Exploration Of Dispersion Measure Within The Milky Way Galaxy, Emily Ware

Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses

A pulsar is a rapidly rotating neutron star which emits electromagnetic radiation from its magnetic poles. Upon detection from Earth, these signals have been dispersed in phase due to electron interactions in transit. The extent of this dispersion indicates information about both the distance to and the location of the pulsar, with respect to Earth and the Galactic plane. This project makes use of radio data from the 100m Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT), presented in the form of prepfold plots assembled by the Pulsar Science Collaboratory (PSC). 1,007 of these plots were analyzed in order to determine …

How Do Nuclear Isomers Influence The Gamma-Ray Bursts In Binary Neutron Star Mergers?, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton, Joseph I. Powell

Physics Faculty Research

Neutron star mergers are astrophysical “gold mines,” synthesizing over half of the elements heavier than iron through rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis. The observation of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, detected both in gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation, marked a breakthrough. One electromagnetic component of this event, the gamma ray burst GRB 170817A, has an unresolved aspect: the characteristics of its prompt gamma-ray emission spectrum. In this work, we investigate that gamma-ray spectra in such GRBs may be influenced by de-excitations from isomeric transitions. Our study begins with a review of current knowledge on GRB structure and of r-process nucleosynthesis …

Investigation Of Surface Chemistry From Electron Irradiation Of Synthetic Schreibersite, Tyler Davis Apr 2024

Investigation Of Surface Chemistry From Electron Irradiation Of Synthetic Schreibersite, Tyler Davis

Master's Theses

While phosphorus is one of the key elements for life on Earth, it has relatively low abundance in extraterrestrial environments, making it a target for astronomers and astrobiologists interested in the possibility of life beyond our planet. Schreibersite (Fe,Ni)3P is one of the first P-containing minerals to condense during planetary cooling and one of the primary P-containing minerals in iron and stony-iron meteorites. Therefore, it is a likely P-bearing mineral in cometary cores and dust grains within the interstellar medium and circumstellar envelopes. Experiments in this project were performed with the aim of observing the formation of small …

Models Of Low Mass Stars As Physical Labratories, Emily M. Boudreaux Apr 2024

Models Of Low Mass Stars As Physical Labratories, Emily M. Boudreaux

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Low mass stars account for approximately 70 percent of the stellar populations (Conroy & Van Dokkum, 2012); yet, due to their small sizes and cool temperatures they account for only a small fraction of the galaxies luminosity function (Laughlin et al., 1997). Moreover, due to the lack of laboratory conditions available to astronomy and astrophysics low mass stars can provide a rare controlled environment for calibrations of numerical models. Consequently, across multiple domains there has been significant interest in these key astronomical objects. In this thesis I present three projects which have further revealed properties of low mass stars and …

Density And Magnetic Field Asymmetric Kelvin‐Helmholtz Instability, Xuanye Ma, Peter Delamere, Katariina Nykyri, Antonius Otto, Stefan Eriksson, Lihui Chai, Brandon Burkholder, Andrew Dimmock, Yu-Lun Liou, Shiva Kavosi Mar 2024

Density And Magnetic Field Asymmetric Kelvin‐Helmholtz Instability, Xuanye Ma, Peter Delamere, Katariina Nykyri, Antonius Otto, Stefan Eriksson, Lihui Chai, Brandon Burkholder, Andrew Dimmock, Yu-Lun Liou, Shiva Kavosi

Publications

The Kelvin‐Helmholtz (KH) instability can transport mass, momentum, magnetic flux, and energy between the magnetosheath and magnetosphere, which plays an important role in the solar‐wind‐ magnetosphere coupling process for different planets. Meanwhile, strong density and magnetic field asymmetry are often present between the magnetosheath (MSH) and magnetosphere (MSP), which could affect the transport processes driven by the KH instability. Our magnetohydrodynamics simulation shows that the KH growth rate is insensitive to the density ratio between the MSP and the MSH in the compressible regime, which is different than the prediction from linear incompressible theory. When the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) …

Observed Epochal Variations In X-Ray Lines From The O Supergiant Ζ Puppis Do Not Require Substantial Changes In The Wind Mass Flux, Sean J. Gunderson, Kenneth G. Gayley, David P. Huenemoerder, Pragati Pradhan, Nathan A. Miller Feb 2024

Miller

Publications

We fit the high-resolution Chandra X-ray spectra of the O supergiant ζ Puppis using the variable boundary condition (VBC) line model to test the stability of its mass-loss rate between two epochs of observation: 2000 March and 2018 July – 2019 August. At issue is whether the observed variations are induced by global changes in the cool (unshocked) wind itself or are isolated to the local pockets of hot gas (i.e. changes in the frequency and location of the shocks). Evidence in the literature favoured the possibility of a 40 per cent increase in the mass flux of the entire …

Life Beyond The Horizon: The Universe Was Born In A Black Hole, Zahria Patrick Jan 2024

Life Beyond The Horizon: The Universe Was Born In A Black Hole, Zahria Patrick

Undergraduate Research Symposium

It is a widely accepted fact that obtaining information about a black hole is a near-impossible task without being stretched like a spaghetti noodle and trapped in one due to its strong gravitational pull. If the universe exists in a black hole, however, it will mean that it could be possible to survive after crossing its inescapable borders. As surprising as all of this may seem, this theory has existed for quite a while amongst a few different physicists. One person that has shed light on and expanded people’s knowledge of this frightening theory is theoretical physicist, Nikodem Poplawski. The …

Analysis Of Neutron Star Structure And Equation Of State Using Computational Simulations, Sohila Sameh

2024 REYES Proceedings

Understanding neutron star structures is crucial for advancing astrophysical research. This study explores the structure of neutron stars using advanced equations, including the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations, and various equations of state (EoS). We investigate the mass-radius relationship, stability criteria, and cooling mechanisms. Key findings highlight the impact of relativistic corrections and rotational effects on neutron star properties. The results demonstrate how integrating these advanced equations enhances the understanding of neutron star behavior and stability. This research provides a comprehensive framework for analyzing neutron star structures, with implications for future astrophysical studies.

Nuclear Physics And Neutron Stars: Structure Of Compact Stellar Objects, Michel Geralddi Coria Magaña

2024 REYES Proceedings

The Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations provide a theoretical framework for modeling the structure of neutron stars and white dwarfs in hydrostatic equilibrium. Using Python and MATLAB, we simulate the mass-radius relationship, pressure, and density profiles of these compact stars, focusing on how ionized plasma dynamics contribute to their stability. By incorporating particle simulations into the visualization process, we model the internal forces of neutron stars and white dwarfs, demonstrating how computational tools offer unique insights into these celestial objects. The results align well with theoretical predictions and provide a solid foundation for future studies incorporating additional physical effects such as magnetic …

A Computational Study On The Structural Limits Of Neutron Stars Under Relativistic Conditions And Nuclear Phenomena, Marcelo Siles Jan 2024

A Computational Study On The Structural Limits Of Neutron Stars Under Relativistic Conditions And Nuclear Phenomena, Marcelo Siles

2024 REYES Proceedings

This project investigates the modeling of neutron stars and white dwarfs using polytropic equations of state and relativistic corrections. By integrating relativistic effects into the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations, we obtain more accurate predictions of neutron star properties, including mass-radius relationships and neutron degeneracy pressure. Non-relativistic models are inadequate under high pressures. Considering nucleon-nucleon interactions suggests that neutron stars can surpass the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit, theoretically reaching masses up to 2.3 𝑀. However, empirical data supports a more realistic mass range of 1.5 to 2.3 𝑀. The inclusion of neutron star crust modeling refines these predictions, indicating possible …

The A²Π-X²Σ⁺ Band System Of Sco For M-Type Star Spectral Analysis, Léo Lavy, Adam Pastorek, Peter F. Bernath

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

M-type stars are the most abundant stars in our Galaxy. Their visible spectra are characterized by strong TiO and VO absorption bands with occasional ScO bands near 6000–6100 Å. This region corresponds to the A²Π–X²Σ+ band system and can be used to measure the abundance of ScO. In this work, a new Doppler-limited resolution spectrum of ScO obtained in a hollow-cathode experiment is presented. The A²Π–X²Σ+ electronic transition is analyzed with special care dedicated to fitting the A′²Δ(v+2) ∼ A²Π(v) perturbation. Spectroscopic constants of the A²Π(v) states are reported for v ≤ 9, and a partial fit of …

The Computational Search For Unidentified Central Configurations Of The Newtonian N-Body Problem, Hannah G. Havel Jan 2024

The Computational Search For Unidentified Central Configurations Of The Newtonian N-Body Problem, Hannah G. Havel

CURE Proceedings

The N-body problem is a field of study in mathematics and physics that involves predicting the motion of particles moving under their mutual gravitational attraction. It is vital in celestial mechanics, such as planning collision-free satellite orbit trajectories. When beginning to understand the N-body problem, we can start by looking at equal masses of these particles or celestial bodies. As particles move, their position and velocity change, both energy and angular momentum are conserved. Sets of constant energy and angular momentum, known as integral manifolds, are higher-dimensional figures that represent constraints of movement to a system. Integral manifolds are described …

Analysis Of Pulsar Discoveries And Pulse Profile Variability: From Pulsar Candidates To Gravitational Wave Detector, William Carl Fiore Jan 2024

Analysis Of Pulsar Discoveries And Pulse Profile Variability: From Pulsar Candidates To Gravitational Wave Detector, William Carl Fiore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Last year, pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) reported evidence of a gravitational-wave (GW) background at nanohertz frequencies, opening a new window into the Universe. PTAs measure GW-induced variations in the timing of radio pulses from millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in our Galaxy. In order for PTA experiments to confidently detect and characterize the GW background, they must continue to regularly observe many MSPs and measure their pulse times of arrival as precisely as possible. This motivates efforts to find new MSPs with pulsar surveys, and to study pulsars whose unusual behavior may give rise to excess noise in PTA data sets, potentially …
