L-moments are defined as linear combinations of expected values of order statistics of a variable.(Hosking 1990) L-moments are estimated from samples using functions of weighted means of order statistics. The advantages of L-moments over classical moments are: able to characterize a wider range of distributions; L-moments are more robust to the presence of outliers in the data when estimated from a sample; and L-moments are less subject to bias in estimation and approximate their asymptotic normal distribution more closely.

In this dissertation we have attempted to measure the cost of children, which plays a crucial role in matters relating to welfare and public policy like child benefits and compensation policies of the government. The main motivation of the present dissertation is the estimation of engel elasticities of certain items of consumption after eliminating the possible effects of seasonal and other short-run fluctuations from household budget data. Indian budget data provided by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO), mainly relating to the 38th round (January - December, 1983), has been utilized for the study. Such data generally relate to a moving reference period of 'last 30 days' preceding the date of interview (also referred to as the last month reference period). Optimizing the extraction of oil and other hydrocarbon products from existing sites is important. One source of hydrocarbon products is reservoirs found within sedimentary rock formations. Understanding fluid behavior within such formations can be quite useful in optimizing oil production. Fluid behavior within sedimentary formations is influenced by the bedform structure and permeabilities within the formation. Thus, we are concerned with developing a physically and statistically valid method of characterizing sedimentary rock formations. The use of archetypal analysis to generate synthetic bedforms, as well as the use of Kriging to assign permeabilities within a bedform, was explored. With these tools, …

About 5.2 million acres, or 25 percent, of northern Utah is forested. Fifty-two percent of this forest area is capable of producing commercial wood products and is classified as timberland. Forty-eight percent is classified as woodland, primarily pinyon-juniper. The predominant forest types on the timberland are aspen, Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, and spruce-fir. The National Forest System manages 70 percent of the timberland; 23 percent is under private ownership, and 7 percent is under other public ownership (local, State, and other Federal). Thirteen percent of the timberland is withdrawn from commercial timber production and is in a reserved status. Most reserved …

A simple, easy-to-use graphical method is presented for use in determining if there is any statistically significant trend or pattern over time in an underlying Poisson event rate of occurrence or binomial failure on demand probability. The method is based on the combined use of both an exponentially weighted moving-average (EWMA) and a Shewhart chart. Two nuclear power plant examples are introduced and used to illustrate the method. The false alarm probability and power when using the combined procedure are also determined for both cases using Monte Carlo simulation. The asymptotic approach to statistical estimation is frequently adopted be cause of ita general applicability and relative simplicity. In Statistics, a classical problem is that of estimating the regression function which is defined as m{t) := E(Y|X = ), te R, for two random variables X and Y such that EY < 0o. The estimators are constructed iased on a sample {(Xi, Yi.)}, 1sis n,n 2 1, from the distribution of (X, Y). Throughout this thesis, we assume X and Y to be real-valued for the sake of convenience. The classical approach to this problem is to assume a parametrized, polynomial form for nt-), i.e., m(t) := Bo + E-1 P,ti, p 21, and obtain estimates of the unknown paraineters Bo, Bj,, 1sjsp. Later, with the development of techıniques for non-parametrie density estimation, it was sought to extend these techniques to regression estimation. Introductory statistics textbooks typically develop the concept of continuous random variables with a discussion of only the variables' probability distribution function and omit any discussion of the cumulative distribution function. The cumulative distribution function, however, is useful in developing the concepts of a normal distribution, the standard normal distribution and the probability of a continuous random variable falls within a specific range of values since the standard normal statistical table is derived from the cumulative distribution function.
