We present measurements of the clustering properties of bright (L > L*) z~4 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) selected from the Oxford-Dartmouth Thirty Degree Survey (ODT). We describe techniques used to select and evaluate our candidates and calculate the angular correlation function, which we find best fitted by a power law, ω(θ) =Awθ−β with Aw= 15.4 (with θ in arcsec), using a constrained slope of β= 0.8. Using a redshift distribution consistent with photometric models, we deproject this correlation function and find a comoving Mpc in a Ωm= 0.3 flat λ cosmology for iAB≤ 24.5. This corresponds to a linear bias value …

Some Contributions To Semidefine Linear Complementary Problem., D. Sampangi Raman Dr.
Doctoral Theses
This thesis is composed of chapters 1 to 5. In Chapter 1, we formally define SDLCP and give some examples of SDLCP and show that SDLCP is a special case of variational inequality problem. Also we show that LCP is indeed a special case of SDLCP. Later section of this chapter deals with definitions and notations. In Chapter 2, we are concerned with the results which have been obtained in an effort to generalize the P-matrix condition of LCP to SDLCP. It is known that a matrix M is a P-matrix if and only if M does not re verse the …

Essays On Dynamic Disequilibrium Models., Arpita Dhar Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The present dissertation is devoted to the analysis of some problems of economic growth in the framework of what has been called Disequilibrium model.Studies on economic growth have been mostly confined, with few exceptions, to the analysis of equilibrium models. But in reality there are cases where the concept of equilibrium may not be relevant and hence a disequilibrium approach is needed. The present thesis is concerned with analysing some theoretical and empirical aspects of the problem of economic growth in a disequilibrium framework. At the theoretical level, the objective has been to re-examine the conclusions of some existing equilibrium …

We have used the EFAR sample of galaxies to investigate the light distributions of early-type galaxies. We decompose the two-dimensional light distribution of the galaxies in a flattened spheroidal component with a Sérsic radial light profile and an inclined disc component with an exponential light profile. We show that if we assume that all galaxies can have a spheroidal and a disc component, then the brightest, bulge-dominated elliptical galaxies have a fairly broad distribution in the Sérsic profile shape parameter nB, with a median of approximately 3.7 and with σ∼ 0.9. Other galaxies have smaller nB values. …

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications
Class material for introductory and advanced statistics can be colorfully illustrated by using appropriate data and examples from sports. Specific methods, including statistical graphics (e.g., boxplots), ball-and-urn probabilities, and statistical regression are demonstrated. Examples are drawn from popular American sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer and American football. Classroom feedback indicates that most students enjoy sports examples as a way to learn abstract concepts using familiar, recreational settings.

Contributions To Emerging Techniques In Survey Sampling., Sanghamitra Pal Dr.
Doctoral Theses
This dissertation contains seven Chapters. The contents in the respective Chapters may be briefly recounted as follows.A topic of classical interest in survey sampling is how to ensure the existence of a uniformly non-negative (UNN) unbiased estimator for the mean square error (MSE) of a homogeneous linear estimator (HLE) for a finite survey population total. Hájek (1958), Vijayan (1975), Rao and Vijayan (1977) and Rao (1979) developed a number of results which boil down to the folowing as narrated in the monograph by Chaudhuri and Stenger (1992).If there exist non-zero constants w, and the unknown values y, of the variable …
Statistical Study Of Solar Radio Bursts, Gelu-Marius Nita
Statistical Study Of Solar Radio Bursts, Gelu-Marius Nita
Dissertations
The peak flux distribution of 40 years of solar radio burst data recorded by NOAA, as a function of frequency and time over a wide range of frequencies, was investigated to quantify the potential impact of radio bursts on wireless systems. Tables of fit parameters, which can be used to find burst occurrence rates in a number of frequency ranges, are presented. The typical power-law index of number density distribution, -1.8, is similar to that found in many hard X-ray studies. Significant changes were found in power-law index with frequency. The results may be useful for designers of current and …

Predicting the evolution of software engineering technology trends is a dubious proposition. The recent evolution of software technology is a prime example; it is fast paced and affected by many factors, which are themselves driven by a wide range of sources. This dissertation is part of a long term project intended to analyze software engineering technology trends and how they evolve. Basically, the following questions will be answered: How to watch, predict, adapt to, and affect software engineering trends?
In this dissertation, one field of software engineering, programming languages, will be discussed. After reviewing the history of a group of …

Some Issues On Time Varying Risk Premium In Arch-M Model., Samarjit Das Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Since the 1970's it has been observed in many economies that financial and macroeconomic variables like equity prices, treasury bill rates and exchange rates have become more and more volatile in nature. This may be due tumor flexible monetary policies pursued in these countries as well as due to their increasing exposure towards various international developments. Accordingly, economic agents are facing increasingly more and more risky environment. Re- searchers as well as professional economists in the area of capital and business finance have, therefore, been increasingly attracted in recent years towards studying the effect of risk and uncertainty on asset …
Gauss' Method Of Least Squares: An Historically-Based Introduction, Belinda B. Brand
Gauss' Method Of Least Squares: An Historically-Based Introduction, Belinda B. Brand
LSU Master's Theses
This work presents Gauss' justification of the method of least squares, following the treatment given by Gauss himself in "Theoria Combinationis Observationum Erroribus Minimis Obnoxiae," where the main idea is to show that the least squares estimate is the unbiased linear estimate of minimum variance. (Actually, we present Gauss' argument both in his terminology and translated into matrix terminology.) We show how this contrasts with Gauss' earlier justfication in "Theoria Motus Corporum Coelestium" which was based on the assumption of a normal distribution of errors, and yielded the estimate of maximum likelihood. We present as a background the development from …

A Simulation Study Of The Impact Of Forecast Recovery For Control Charts Applied To Arma Processes, John N. Dyer, B. Michael Adams, Michael D. Conerly
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Forecast-based schemes are often used to monitor autocorrelated processes, but the resulting forecast recovery has a significant effect on the performance of control charts. This article describes forecast recovery for autocorrelated processes, and the resulting simulation study is used to explain the performance of control charts applied to forecast errors.

Slippage And Change Point Problem With Directional Data., Arnab Kumar Laha Dr.
Slippage And Change Point Problem With Directional Data., Arnab Kumar Laha Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In this thesis we develop statistical methods for dealing with two problems namely (1) THE SLIPPAGE PROBLEM and (2) THE CHANGE POINT PROB- LEM in the set-up of directional data. In this chapter, we provide an intro- duction to these problems and discuss the importance of the present work. The slippage problem is basically a problem to detect whether any unspecified observation in a given random sample comes from a distribution different from that for all the other remaining observations. This can also be viewed as a problem of outlier detection or that of spuriosity. This problem assumes great importance …

This thesis comprises of three essays in corporate finance focusing on the Indian economy. The first essay contains a theoretical model while the second and the third essays are empirical exercises. In the subsequent paragraphs of this section, we examine the broader issues to which the contents of the thesis contribute. The past few years have seen rising interest in studies of financial insti- tutions and corporate financial policies in countries other than the United States. One of the reasons for such a shift in attention is the diversity in the size and structure of financial arrangements all over the world. …

This paper describes an interactive Web-based tutorial that supplements instruction on statistical power. This freely available tutorial provides several interactive exercises that guide students as they draw multiple samples from various populations and compare results for populations with differing parameters (for example, small standard deviation versus large standard deviation). The tutorial assignment includes diagnostic multiple-choice questions with feedback addressing misconceptions, and follow-up questions suitable for grading. The sampling exercises utilize an interactive Java applet that graphically demonstrates relationships between statistical power and effect size, null and alternative populations and sampling distributions, and Type I and II error rates. The applet …

On Some Optimal Tests In Finite Mixtures: Constructions And Applications., Chandranath Pal Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Mixtures of distributions are now-a-days playing very important roles in both theoretical and applied statistics. There is an abundance of real-life situations where mixture distributions are being extensively used for modelling data and drawing inference. Several books and monographs on mixtures have so far been published, e.g., Everitt and Hand (1981), Titterington et al. (1985), McLachlan and Basford (1988), McLachlan (1997) etc., which cover a wide area on different aspects of mixture distributions and their applications. The book by Titterington et al. (1985, pp. 16-21), in particular, contains a comprehensive list of references on direct applications of finite mixtures in …

Statistical Properties Of Maximum Likelihood Estimates For Accelerated Lifetime Data Under The Weibull Model, Mahmoud A. Yousef
Statistical Properties Of Maximum Likelihood Estimates For Accelerated Lifetime Data Under The Weibull Model, Mahmoud A. Yousef
Doctoral Dissertations
Pipe rehabilitation liners are often installed in host pipes that lie below the water table. As such, they are subjected to external hydrostatic pressure. The external pressure leads to early deformation in the liners, which could ultimately lead to its failing or buckling before its expected service lifetime is achieved. Experiments involving long term buckling behavior of liners are typically accelerated lifetime testing procedures. In an accelerated testing procedure a liner is subjected to a constant external hydrostatic pressure and observed until it fails or for a certain time, t whichever occurs first. Liners that do not fail at time …

Stochastic Comparision And Dependence Among Order Statistics,Spacing And Concomitants Of Order Statistics., Baha-Eldin Khaledi Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The simplest and the most common way of comparing two random variables is through their means and variances. It may happen that in some cases the median of X is larger than the median of Y, while the mean of X is smaller than the mean of Y. However, this confusion will not arise if the random variables are stochastically ordered. Similarly, the same may happen if one would like to compare the variability of X with that of Y based only on numerical measures of variability. Besides, these characteristics of distributions might not exist in some cases. In most …
Heckman's Methodology For Correcting Selectivity Bias : An Application To Road Crash Costs, Margaret Giles
Heckman's Methodology For Correcting Selectivity Bias : An Application To Road Crash Costs, Margaret Giles
Research outputs pre 2011
Aggregate road crash costs are traditionally determined using average costs applied to incidence figures found in Police-notified crash data. Such data only comprise a non-random sample of the true population of road crashes, the bias being due to the existence of crashes that are not notified to the Police. The traditional approach is to label the Police-notified sample as 'non-random' thereby casting a cloud over data analyses using this sample. Heckman however viewed similar problems as 'omitted variables' problems in that the exclusion of some observations in a systematic manner (so-called selectivity bias) has inadvertently introduced the need for an …

Introduction and Summary Consider the problem of classification of an observation into one of two specified populations. Fisher's classification rale, just as several other rules commonly used in practice, depends only on the ratio of the individual densities fi(x), i = 1,2. This led Cox (1966),/27) to model the "posterior odds" by a simple function. Specifically,Cox's logistic discrimination (LGD) rule is then based on the statistic a + 'ßx. This has the advantage that individual densities f.(x) need not be known and we only need to estimate the parameters a and B.Another advantage, which is claimed , is that the …
