A Redescription Of The Ichnospecies Koreanaornis Anhuiensis (Aves) From The Lower Cretaceous Qiuzhuang Formation At Mingguang City, Anhui Province, China, Li-Da Xing, Yuan-Chao Hu, Jian-Dong Huang, Qing He, Martin G. Lockley, Michael E. Burns, Jun Fang

Research, Publications & Creative Work

The Cretaceous bird trackway originally labeled Aquatilavipes anhuiensis, in 1994, had previously been examined, photographed and replicated, but never described or illustrated in detail. However, it has been part of a widening discussion about the distribution of Aquatilavipes and Koreanaornis in China (and Korea). Here we illustrate and formally describe the holotype in detail and assign it to Koreanaornis (Koreanaornis anhuiensis) as informally proposed by previous authors. We also demonstrate that most authenticated reports of Koreanaornis, including the Anhui occurrence, are from the Lower Cretaceous, not from the Upper Cretaceous as previously reported.

Assessment Of The High-Resolution Sediment Gravity Flow Record In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Elisabeth Rose Clyne Dec 2017

Assessment Of The High-Resolution Sediment Gravity Flow Record In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Elisabeth Rose Clyne

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

South-Central Alaska is one of the most seismically active and climatologically sensitive places in the world. Within this region, Prince William Sound (PWS) receives abundant sediment from multiple sources, potentially housing a high-resolution environmental record spanning the past 4,000 years. Inputs to PWS are derived from local rivers and glaciers, and may include earthquake- and glacial-outburst-triggered sediment gravity flows. Therefore, this is an ideal location to investigate the long-term record of seismic, glacial, and riverine activity. This study examines the elemental, grain size, and stable isotope signatures in PWS to identify gravity flow deposits and the potential paleoseismic and paleoclimate …

Will Lee-Side Cyclones Become More Intense In A Warming Climate?, Samuel Scoleri Dec 2017

Will Lee-Side Cyclones Become More Intense In A Warming Climate?, Samuel Scoleri

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

The generation of lee-side low pressure systems, or lee-side cyclogenesis, commonly occurs in areas downwind of mountain ranges, such as eastern Colorado. Cyclones that form east of the Rockies tend to evolve into larger storm systems that travel eastward into the Great Plains region. Previous studies have found that diabatic heating, such as heat radiating away from Earth’s surface, has the ability to affect developing cyclones. The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has reported that future climate scenarios all indicate an increase in surface temperature, which could prove to impact lee-side cyclogenesis. The purpose of my research is to …

Investigating The Mechanism Of Deep-Focus Earthquakes Via In-Situ Acoustic Emission Experiments On Fe2sio4 At High Temperature And Pressure, Timothy Officer

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In subduction zones, earthquakes are thought to be associated with faulting that arises from phase transformations. In order to test the viability of this mechanism experimentally, it was necessary to make microseismic measurements while the mineral under investigation was subjected to the pressure and temperature (P,T) conditions corresponding to their environment at depth. A system has been developed capable of making in situ acoustic emission (AE) measurements on samples under P,T conditions representative of the upper mantle and transition zone. Experiments were performed in a 3000-ton multi-anvil press using an 18/11 octahedral cell with 6 piezoelectric transducers mounted on the …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Elk Creek Carbonatite Complex (ECCC) comprises eight different units of carbonatite and silicate rocks, including a magnetite-dolomite carbonatite that hosts the largest niobium deposit in the United States. This study focused on interpreting the first set of sulfur isotopes from this system to decipher between magmatic and secondary processes. Using sulfur isotope variations I was able to discriminate between hypogene and supergene mineralization, and measure (1) formation temperatures (2) possible sulfur source (3) degassing effects on isotopic composition, and (4) post-magmatic alteration. The groundwork for mapping and interpreting iron oxide alteration is also laid out in this thesis.

Hypogene …

In South China, both crustal reworking and crust–mantle interaction were important geological processes during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras. However, the relationships between these two processes and metal mineralization are still unknown. Here we report rhenium and osmium isotopic data for pyrite grains from a pyrite deposit associated with a granite intrusion in the Shangbao area, southeastern Hunan Province (South China). Two pyrite samples, both containing many euhedral pyrite grains, were collected from the same locality, but the samples yield distinct ages. Six euhedral pyrite grains from one sample yield an isochronal age of 279 ± 12 Ma, with an …

Groundwater-Surface Water Interaction In The Headwater Of The White River, Manistee National Forest, Michigan, Ziqian Li Dec 2017

Groundwater-Surface Water Interaction In The Headwater Of The White River, Manistee National Forest, Michigan, Ziqian Li

Masters Theses

Groundwater is a significant fresh water source in most areas and can be affected by potential changes to climate and precipitation from anthropogenic influences. Considering groundwater and surface water can be regarded as one hydrologic system, it is significant to understand the dynamics between precipitation, shallow groundwater and surface water in order to manage these resources.

Water samples were collected roughly biweekly from July 2016 to June 2017, and analyzed for electrical conductivity and stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen. During sample collection site visits, stream discharge and the groundwater heads from different wells were measured.

The stable isotopes of …
