An amperometric uric acid (UA) sensor incorporating a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) network in Nafion and electropolymerized β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) layer is investigated. The electrochemical sensor is comprised of a glassy carbon electrode modified with Nafion-MWCNT nanocomposite film, a β-CD polymer inner selective layer, and a Hydrothane polyurethane (HPU) outer selective coating. The surface morphology and electronic structure of the electrode material are characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The study of model Hamiltonians, whose exact ground states are well known quantum Hall states, have been investigated solely in the literature from the point of view of first quantized approach in the last few decades. However, a second quantized approach to such Hamiltonians has not been taken in the same measure. In this dissertation, we study Haldane pseudopotential, which is the parent Hamiltonian of 1/M Laughlin state, and Trugman-Kivelson pseudopotential, which is the parent Hamiltonian of 2/5 unprojected Jain state. Although x-ray computed tomography (CT) is a gold standard for pulmonary imaging, it has high ionizing radiation, which puts patients at greater risk of cancer, particularly in a longitudinal study with cumulative doses. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) doesn't involve exposure to ionizing radiation and is especially useful for visualizing soft tissues and organs such as ligaments, cartilage, brain, and heart. A stereo- and enantio-selective synthesis of lingzhiol has been achieved, mimicking a proposed biogenetic pathway via Brønsted acid-catalyzed semipinacol rearrangement of a 2,3-epoxy alcohol. A new and improved method was developed for alkylation of anilines using a domestic microwave oven. The resulting racemic chiral anilines were resolved via classical resolution and transformed into axially chiral thiazolylidene-based NHC organocatalysts, which were applied to asymmetric benzoin condensation.

The visual cortex is a densely-interconnected network of neurons, which receives sensory input from the early visual pathway, and represents information about the visual world in the resulting spatiotemporal activity patterns. These patterns are mediated by cortical interactions that span multiple spatial scales (i.e., neuron-neuron, neuron-population, and population-population). Such interactions are a fundamental property of cortical function, and capture the contribution of the cortex to sensory coding. Yet these interactions are only beginning to be understood, in part because of the challenge of recording ongoing and visually-evoked activity across multiple spatial scales in individual studies. Petrologic studies of two new, unique meteorites were conducted in order to characterize the samples and provide insights into their parent bodies. The first sample, Northwest Africa 7034, is the first martian meteorite breccia to be discovered. In an effort to understand the martian crustal materials sampled by the breccia, we developed a classification scheme for the breccia clasts based on their texture, mineralogy, and chemistry. We then further investigated two clast groups which contained trends in mineralogy and chemistry that suggested a possible genetic relationship between the two. Polymers that undergo end-to-end depolymerization in response to the cleavage of a stimuli-responsive end-cap are promising for diverse applications from drug delivery to responsive coatings and plastics. It is critical that the end-cap is designed to respond to an appropriate stimulus for the application. In the current work, end-caps for triggering the depolymerization of poly(ethyl glyoxylate) (PEtG) were explored. First, a phenylboronate, a disulfi de, and an azobenzene were utilized to impart redox-responsive properties to PEtG. Reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography, chosen because of its ability to collect many data points over a long period of time with minimal involvement, was used to separate pentaamminenitritocobalt(III) chloride and pentaamminenitrocobalt(III) chloride. Pentaamminenitritocobalt(III) chloride was prepared, made into a concentrated solution, divided into aliquots and allowed to isomerize to pentaamminenitrocobalt(III) chloride over a period of twelve to eighteen hours. An injection was made approximately every forty-five minutes. The samples were analyzed at three wavelengths, 254 nm, 460 nm and 490 nm. The absorbance was collected and was used to determine the kinetics of the reaction.

This is a report on the first NOAA GOES-R satellite, launched on November 19th, 2016. This report will cover some of the details of the GOES-R project, as well as discuss the collaborations that made the project possible. This document will also detail some of the new satellite’s capabilities including geostationary lightning detection, and space weather monitoring, and will focus on real-world application of such technology. Additionally, this report will list some of the current and projected GOES-R products, and the potential benefits if testing proves successful.

We recently shared our design of a two-semester flipped organic chemistry course, in which we gave students in-class quizzes to incentivize attendance and watching the lecture videos in advance. With a second iteration, we planned to make the video-watching experience more engaging. We accordingly hypothesized that if students completed short at-home quizzes while watching the videos, then attentiveness, engagement, and learning would increase. We tested this with a later section of the course, dividing the material into 13 units. For units 1-6, we gave in-class quizzes; for 7-13, quizzes were at home. The High Plains aquifer is a nationally important water resource underlying about 175,000 square miles in parts of eight states: Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. Droughts across much of the Northern High Plains from 2001 to 2007 have combined with recent (2004) legislative mandates to elevate concerns regarding future availability of groundwater and the need for additional information to support science-based water-resource management. The use of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) for photovoltaic energy conversion is a nascent field that has been dominated for well over a decade by the use of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) capped PbS QDs. These QDs are routinely deposited via an in situ solid state ligand exchange process that displaces the native oleate ligand on the PbS QD surface. This ligand exchange procedure is wasteful of material and has been demonstrated to leave numerous impurities that limit electronic performance of the as-deposited QD devices. Most Americans today have a largely negative image of zero-tolerance policies (ZTP) enacted to stop and prevent violence in the United States school system. According to the U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Research and Improvement, zero-tolerance procedures are policies that mandate predetermined consequences or punishments for specific offenses (Walker). These policies specifically targeted actions considered violent and threatening, such as possession of a firearm or weapon. I composed American Spring during the 2015-2016 school year, my final year as an undergraduate at Illinois Wesleyan University, in connection with the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. This opera takes place mostly in April 1865, the year Richmond burned and Lincoln died, and deals with America’s feelings of pride and shame in war. The opera’s main character is Varina Davis, the wife of confederate President Jefferson Davis. A Park Story was written to be an honest and objective portrayal of the struggles that both characters experience throughout their collective story. Christopher and his mother both end up fighting two dominating perspectives of their identity: their family roles, and how they identify themselves. This research is about understanding the structure of a subset of graphitic stardust found in primitive meteorites (e.g. the Murchison meteorite). The carbon grains of interest exhibit a core-rim structure, where the core – with a density less than that of the graphitic rim – comprises the majority of the grain. Previous studies have shown that the cores are comprised primarily of unlayered graphene, and it has been hypothesized that the cores are the result of the rapid freezing (quenching) of a liquid carbon droplet. The deeply laterised landscapes of Western Australia’s wheatbelt contain large amounts of ferruginous concretions or pisoliths, referred to locally as ironstone gravel. Soil surveys over the years have described ironstone gravel presence and abundance, and the state soil classification system recognises their importance in agriculture by designating ‘ironstone gravel soils’ at the highest level of the classification hierarchy. These gravels have generally been assumed inert in agricultural soils; however, farm trials and anecdotal experience suggest they may play a more active role in nutrient and water retention than previously recognised. Hyperspectral remote sensing imagery contains much more information in the spectral domain than does multispectral imagery. The consecutive and abundant spectral signals provide a great potential for classification and anomaly detection. In this study, two real hyperspectral data sets were used for anomaly detection. One data set was an Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) data covering the post-attack World Trade Center (WTC) and anomalies are fire spots. Cardiac arrhythmias occur when the normal pattern of electrical signals in the heart breaks down. A premature ventricular contraction (PVC) is a common type of arrhythmia that occurs when a heartbeat originates from an ectopic focus within the ventricles rather than from the sinus node in the right atrium. The Creation of a Video Review Guide for the Free-Response Section of the Advanced Placement Calculus Exam follows the creation of a resource to help students prepare for the College Board’s Advanced Placement Calculus Exam. This project originated out of the authors personal experiences in preparing for this exam. The goal of the project was to create an accessible resource that reviews content, provides insights into the Advanced Placement exam, and creates successful habits in student responses. This paper, chronologically, details the development of the resource and a reflection on the final product and future uses.

Using spatially resolved spectroscopy from SDSS-IV MaNGA we have demonstrated that low ionization emission-line regions (LIERs) in local galaxies result from photoionization by hot evolved stars, not active galactic nuclei, hence tracing galactic region hosting old stellar population where, despite the presence of ionized gas, star formation is no longer occurring. LIERs are ubiquitous in both quiescent galaxies and in the central regions of galaxies where star formation takes place at larger radii. We refer to these two classes of galaxies as extended LIER (eLIER) and central LIER (cLIER) galaxies, respectively. cLIERs are late-type galaxies primarily spread across the green …

A transient gravitational-wave signal, GW150914, was identified in the twin Advanced LIGO detectors on 2015 September 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC. To assess the implications of this discovery, the detectors remained in operation with unchanged configurations over a period of 39 days around the time of the signal. At the detection statistic threshold corresponding to that observed for GW150914, our search of the 16 days of simultaneous two-detector observational data is estimated to have a false-alarm rate (FAR) of <4.9×10−6yr−1, yielding a p-value for GW150914 of <2×10−7. Parameter estimation follow-up on this trigger identifies its source as a binary black hole (BBH) merger with component masses (m1,m2)=(36−4+5,29−4+4)M⊙ at redshift z=0.09−0.04+0.03 (median and 90% credible range). Here, we report on the constraints these observations place on the rate of BBH coalescences. Considering only GW150914, assuming that all BBHs in the universe have the same masses and spins as this event, imposing a search FAR threshold of 1 per 100 years, and assuming that the BBH merger rate is constant in the comoving frame, we infer a 90% credible range of merger rates between 2--53Gpc−3yr−1 (comoving frame). Incorporating all search triggers that pass a much lower threshold while accounting for the uncertainty in the astrophysical origin of each trigger, we estimate a higher rate, ranging from 13--600Gpc−3yr−1 depending on assumptions about the BBH mass distribution. All together, our various rate estimates fall in the conservative range 2--600Gpc−3yr−1.
