Re-Storing The Earth: A Phenomenological Study Of Living Sustainably, Jessica B. Buckley Dec 2013

Re-Storing The Earth: A Phenomenological Study Of Living Sustainably, Jessica B. Buckley

Faculty Scholarship

Living sustainably evokes ideas of lived, bodily engagement with and perception of the earth. Yet, modern ways of thinking and speaking have slowly alienated the earth from consciousness. Using phenomenological methods, the author examines the experience of living sustainably, exploring her own background and the idea of restoring the earth to consciousness, before examining the lives of two students dedicated to living sustainably. Components of upholding the earth, in-volving humanity, perceiving differences in studying and embodying sustainability, and engaging in choices fill the experience of living sustainably.

New Algorithms For Structural Variation Detection By De Novo Genome Assembly, Ehsan Haghshenas Dec 2013

New Algorithms For Structural Variation Detection By De Novo Genome Assembly, Ehsan Haghshenas

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Structural variations (SVs) are changes in the human genome that are reported in several studies to be associated with some diseases. Therefore, designing methods to find these types of variations would help us for early detection of those diseases and utilizing new treatment methods such as personalized medicine. Currently computational methods are applied to find structural variations from short reads obtained by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms. Usually each method has more power in finding particular types or sizes of SVs and limitations in finding others. Thus, still new approaches and methods are on demand for SV discovery.

Prediction Of Fine Particulate Matter Chemical Components For The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis Cohort: A Comparison Of Two Modeling Approaches, Sun-Young Kim, Lianne Sheppard, Silas Bergen, Adam A. Szpiro, Paul D. Sampson, Joel Kaufman, Sverre Vedal

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Recent epidemiological cohort studies of the health effects of PM2.5 have developed exposure estimates from advanced exposure prediction models. Such models represent spatial variability across participant residential locations. However, few cohort studies have developed exposure predictions for PM2.5 components. We used two exposure modeling approaches to obtain long-term average predicted concentrations for four PM2.5 components: sulfur, silicon, and elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC). The models were specifically developed for the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) cohort as a part of the National Particle Component and Toxicity (NPACT) study. The spatio-temporal model used 2-week average measurements …

The 6He nucleus is an ideal candidate to study the weak interaction. To this end we have built a high-intensity source of 6He delivering ∼1010 atoms/s to experiments. Taking full advantage of that available intensity we have performed a high-precision measurement of the 6He half-life that directly probes the axial part of the nuclear Hamiltonian. Currently, we are preparing a measurement of the beta-neutrino angular correlation in 6He beta decay that will allow to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model in the form of tensor currents. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Disaster Data Management In Cloud Environments, Katarina Grolinger Dec 2013

Disaster Data Management In Cloud Environments, Katarina Grolinger

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Facilitating decision-making in a vital discipline such as disaster management requires information gathering, sharing, and integration on a global scale and across governments, industries, communities, and academia. A large quantity of immensely heterogeneous disaster-related data is available; however, current data management solutions offer few or no integration capabilities and limited potential for collaboration. Moreover, recent advances in cloud computing, Big Data, and NoSQL have opened the door for new solutions in disaster data management.

In this thesis, a Knowledge as a Service (KaaS) framework is proposed for disaster cloud data management (Disaster-CDM) with the objectives of 1) facilitating information gathering …

On The Interoperability Of Programming Languages Based On The Fork-Join Parallelism Model, Sushek Shekar Dec 2013

On The Interoperability Of Programming Languages Based On The Fork-Join Parallelism Model, Sushek Shekar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis describes the implementation of MetaFork, a meta-language for concurrency platforms targeting multicore architectures. First of all, MetaFork is a multithreaded language based on the fork-join model of concurrency: it allows the programmer to express parallel algorithms assuming that tasks are dynamically scheduled at run-time. While MetaFork makes no assumption about the run-time system, it formally defines the serial C-elision of a MetaFork program. In addition, MetaFork is a suite of source-to-source compilers permitting the automatic translation of multithreaded programs between programming languages based on the fork-join model. Currently, this compilation framework supports the OpenMP and CilkPlus concurrency platforms. …

Pore Morphometrics And Thermal Evolution Of Organic-Matter Microporosity, Colorado Group, Western Canada Foreland Basin, Peng Jiang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Pores that develop within kerogen particles make a significant contribution to the network flow capacity and hydrocarbon storage of carbonaceous mudstone reservoirs. It has been suggested that development of Organic matter pores results from thermal degradation of kerogen. The range of thermal and subsidence histories of strata in the Western Canada Foreland Basin provide an excellent framework in which to evaluate the influence of thermal maturity on organic matter micropore morphometrics, and the opportunity to evaluate clay microfabric characteristics. Imaging and pore characterization of mudstone samples from the Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian-Turonian) Colorado Group of the WCFB has been conducted using …

Direct Coupling Of Photonic Modes And Surface Plasmon Polaritons Observed In 2-Photon Peem, Robert Campbell Word, Joseph Fitzgerald, Rolf Könenkamp Dec 2013

Direct Coupling Of Photonic Modes And Surface Plasmon Polaritons Observed In 2-Photon Peem, Robert Campbell Word, Joseph Fitzgerald, Rolf Könenkamp

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report the direct microscopic observation of optical energy transfer from guided photonic modes in an indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film to surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) at the surfaces of a single crystalline gold platelet. The photonic and SPP modes appear as an interference pattern in the photoelectron emission yield across the surface of the specimen. We explore the momentum match between the photonic and SPP modes in terms of simple waveguide theory and the three-layer slab model for bound SPP modes of thin metal films. We show that because the gold is thin (30- 40 nm), two SPP …

Reduced Row Echelon Form And Non-Linear Approximation For Subspace Segmentation And High-Dimensional Data Clustering, Akram Aldroubi, Ali Sekmen Dec 2013

Reduced Row Echelon Form And Non-Linear Approximation For Subspace Segmentation And High-Dimensional Data Clustering, Akram Aldroubi, Ali Sekmen

Computer Science Faculty Research

Given a set of data W={w1,…,wN}∈RD drawn from a union of subspaces, we focus on determining a nonlinear model of the form U=⋃i∈ISi, where {Si⊂RD}i∈I is a set of subspaces, that is nearest to W. The model is then used to classify W into clusters. Our approach is based on the binary reduced row echelon form of data matrix, combined with an iterative scheme based on a non-linear approximation method. We prove that, in absence of noise, our approach can find the number of subspaces, their dimensions, and an orthonormal basis for each subspace Si. We provide a comprehensive analysis …

Department of Physics

Identifying the experimental methods in human neuroimaging papers is important for grouping meaningfully similar experiments for meta-analyses. Currently, this can only be done by human readers. We present the performance of common machine learning (text mining) methods applied to the problem of automatically classifying or labeling this literature. Labeling terms are from the Cognitive Paradigm Ontology (CogPO), the text corpora are abstracts of published functional neuroimaging papers, and the methods use the performance of a human expert as training data. We aim to replicate the expert's annotation of multiple labels per abstract identifying the experimental stimuli, cognitive paradigms, response types, …

Supernova Neutrino Nucleosynthesis Of Light Elements With Neutrino Oscillations, Takashi Yoshida, Toshitaka Kajino, Hidekazu Yokomakura, Keiichi Kimura, Akira Takamura, Dieter H. Hartmann Dec 2013

Supernova Neutrino Nucleosynthesis Of Light Elements With Neutrino Oscillations, Takashi Yoshida, Toshitaka Kajino, Hidekazu Yokomakura, Keiichi Kimura, Akira Takamura, Dieter H. Hartmann

Publications

Light element synthesis in supernovae through neutrino-nucleus interactions, i.e., the ν-process, is affected by neutrino oscillations in the supernova environment. There is a resonance of 13-mixing in the O/C layer, which increases the rates of charged-current ν-process reactions in the outer He-rich layer. The yields of 7Li and 11B increase by about a factor of 1.9 and 1.3, respectively, for a normal mass hierarchy and an adiabatic 13-mixing resonance, compared to those without neutrino oscillations. In the case of an inverted mass hierarchy and a non-adiabatic 13-mixing resonance, the increase in the 7Li and 11B yields is much smaller. Observations …

Modeling Fecal Bacteria In Oregon Coastal Streams Using Spatially Explicit Watershed Characteristics, Paul Bryce Pettus Dec 2013

Modeling Fecal Bacteria In Oregon Coastal Streams Using Spatially Explicit Watershed Characteristics, Paul Bryce Pettus

Dissertations and Theses

Pathogens, such as Escherichia coli and fecal coliforms, are causing the majority of water quality impairments in U.S., making up ~87% of this grouping's violations. Predicting and characterizing source, transport processes, and microbial survival rates is extremely challenging, due to the dynamic nature of each of these components. This research built upon current analytical methods that are used as exploratory tools to predict pathogen indicator counts across regional scales. Using a series of non-parametric methodologies, with spatially explicit predictors, 6657 samples from non-estuarine lotic streams were analyzed to make generalized predictions of regional water quality. 532 frequently sampled sites in …

Color Separation For Image Segmentation, Meng Tang Dec 2013

Color Separation For Image Segmentation, Meng Tang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Image segmentation is a fundamental problem in computer vision that has drawn intensive research attention during the past few decades, resulting in a variety of segmentation algorithms. Segmentation is often formulated as a Markov random field (MRF) and the solution corresponding to the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) is found using energy minimiza- tion framework. Many standard segmentation techniques rely on foreground and background appearance models given a priori. In this case the corresponding energy can be efficiently op- timized globally. If the appearance models are not known, the energy becomes NP-hard, and many methods resort to iterative schemes that …

The development of coupled photoactive materials (metal/semiconductor) has resulted in significant advancements in heterogeneous visible light photocatalysis. This work reports the novel biogenic synthesis of visible light active Ag–ZnO nanocomposite for photocatalysis and photoelectrode using an electrochemically active biofilm (EAB). The results showed that the EAB functioned as a biogenic reducing tool for the reduction of Ag+, thereby eliminating the need for conventional reducing agents. The as-prepared Ag–ZnO nanocomposite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic experiments showed that the Ag–ZnO nanocomposite possessed excellent visible light photocatalytic activity …

Characterization And Reaction Of An Analog Of The Anticancer Drug Oxaliplatin, Jonathan D. Hendrie Dec 2013

Characterization And Reaction Of An Analog Of The Anticancer Drug Oxaliplatin, Jonathan D. Hendrie

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Oxaliplatin is an anticancer drug that reacts with DNA, RNA, and proteins both in vitro and in vivo. Our research focuses on synthesizing analogs of oxaliplatin and understanding how bulky ligand groups affect reaction with amino acids. (R,R)-N,N’-dimethyl-1,2-diaminocyclohexane platinum(II) oxalate or Pt(Me2dach)(ox) varies from oxaliplatin or Pt(dach)(ox) in that it has one methyl group attached to each platinum coordinated nitrogen. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has shown that the reactions of N-Acetylmethionine (N-AcMet) with Pt(Me2dach)(ox) and Pt(dach)(ox) proceed at similar rates suggesting that the methyl groups of Pt(Me2dach)(ox) have little effect on the initial reaction. Whereas the reaction of Pt(dach)(ox) …

Potential Energy Savings When Using Saline Water For Cooling Chillers In Malta, Mireille Micallef Dec 2013

Potential Energy Savings When Using Saline Water For Cooling Chillers In Malta, Mireille Micallef

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Several cooling systems found in facilities on the coast of St. Julian’s were found to be making use of chillers whose condensers are cooled with saline water as opposed to air. The former practice is advantageous since it results in better chiller performance which can be explained through thermodynamic principles. The principle of operation of water cooled chillers is to reject heat from the condenser to saline groundwater obtained from boreholes through a heat exchanger. The higher temperature saline ground water is then rejected to the sea. Chillers cooled with saline groundwater are subject to the Borehole Drilling and Excavation …

An Analysis Of The Application Of Best Management Practices In Collaborative Watershed Management To Community-Based Sustainable Development, Rebecca Holthaus Sappenfield

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This research seeks to determine if BMPs from CWM can inform the broader concept of CBSD. In order to answer this question, I conduct a desk study, which involves an extensive review of the CWM literature in two areas: stakeholder participation and building trust among stakeholders. I then analyze my research to deduce BMPs for these areas of CWM. As part of this analysis, I also explore how effective environmental communication plays a fundamental role in achieving these BMPs. The culmination of this work is the production of guidelines of best practice for stakeholder participation and building trust among stakeholders …

Having multiple functions in biological systems e.g. fertilization, blood group determination, cell growth; carbohydrates have remained attractive subjects for the study. They are also involved in various life threatening biological processes, such as viral and bacterial infections, tumor development, etc. Understanding of these involvements/interactions of carbohydrates in such critical processes is essential for the development of carbohydrate based vaccines and therapeutics. Although carbohydrates are present abundantly in nature, their isolation is cumbersome and low yielding, which is why, the synthesis of carbohydrate units has been of interest to many scientists. Efforts have been made to make these synthetic methods more …

Mechanistic Studies Of Bimolecular Electron Transfer Self-Exchange Rates Of Ruthenium Ammine Pyridyl Complexes Measured By Nmr Line Broadening Techniques, Yishun Qin

Master's Theses

The electron transfer (ET) self-exchange rates on a series of complexes of (NH3)5RuII/III L2+/3+ in D2O (where L is a substituted pyridyl ligand) were investigated by dynamic NMR measurements. Significant rate enhancement was observed for the cases of L = 3-phenylpyridine and 4-phenylpridine due to possible π-π stacking between Phpy ligands. These observations matche well with recent stopped-flow work by Mehmood on a similar set of related pseudo-self exchange reactions. Kinetics of the (NH3)5RuII/III (3-trifluoromethylpyridine)2+/3+ self-exchange reactions with addition of various simple/complex salts and hexacyano salts …
