A hybrid nano-urchin structure consisting of spherical onion-like carbon and MnO2 nanosheets is synthesized by a facile and environmentally-friendly hydrothermal method. Lithium-ion batteries incorporating the hybrid nano-urchin anode exhibit reversible lithium storage with superior specific capacity, enhanced rate capability, stable cycling performance, and nearly 100% Coulombic efficiency. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of designing hybrid nano-architectures with uniform and isotropic structure, high loading of electrochemically-active materials, and good conductivity for the dramatic improvement of lithium storage.

The structural and magnetic properties of the intermetallic compounds NdMn2−xTixSi2(x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) have been studied by x-ray and high resolution neutron powder diffraction, specific heat, dc magnetization, and differential scanning calorimetry measurements over the temperature range 3–450 K. The Curie temperature and Néel temperature of NdMn2Si2 decrease from TC = 36 K and TN = 380 K to TC = 14 K and TN = 360 K, respectively, on substitution of Ti (x = 0.3) for Mn. The title compound, C28H40N2O2S2, was obtained as a minor product from an anti-aldol reaction between the corresponding N-propionyl­thiol­actam and benzaldehyde. The asymmetric unit contains one half-molecule, which is completed by inversion symmetry. The molecule displays a nearly eclipsed conformation along the central C-C bond with a C-C-C-C- torsion angle of 20.4 (3)°.

Bulk MgB2, with self-generated MgB4 pinning centers, have experienced two-step sintering process, initially at 750°C and then 900-1000°C. On the contrary to the widely accepted point that MgB 4 deteriorates superconductivity, it was found that MgB4 played a significant role in enhancing critical current density. The precipitation pattern of MgB4 was studied from the lattice scale images. It was observed that the initial coherent relation between the MgB 4 and the matrix was destroyed to become semi-coherent and even incoherent as the second-step sintering temperature increased. Domain wall motion was directly observed at temperatures near to the monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transition temperature (TM-T) in [001]-oriented 0.23Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-0. 42Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.35PbTiO3 (0.23PIN-0.42PMN-0.35PT) single crystals using a polarizing light microscope, and evident 90°and 180°domain switches were observed near the Curie temperature (TC). Two dielectric loss anomalies were observed at temperatures near TM-T in the [001]-oriented PIN-PMN-PT single crystals, while an additional dielectric loss peak was found at temperatures a few degrees below TC, which was associated with domain wall motion. Based on the domain structure observations, a domain switching mechanism was proposed to explain the novel dielectric loss peak at several degrees …

In this paper we explore a multi-step synthetic strategy toward fabrication of monolayer-modified Si(100) electrodes that can be electrochemically switched. The synthetic scheme is modular and benefits from an established intramolecular lactonization scheme of benzoquinone analogs. A redox-tagged pendant group can be released from the surface such as to allow for in situ monitoring of the switch process. We show that this model system can be used to elucidate chemical and structural events for a surface dynamic system that is rapidly gaining popularity. High-temperature Pb(Zr,Ti)O3/epoxy 1-3 composites were fabricated using the dice and fill method. The epoxy filler was modified with glass spheres in order to improve the thermal reliability of the composites at elevated temperatures. Temperature-dependent dielectric and electromechanical properties of the composites were measured after ageing at 250 °C with different dwelling times. Obvious cracks were observed and the electrodes were damaged in the composite with unmodified epoxy after 200 h, leading to the failure of the composite. In contrast, composites with >12 vol% glass sphere loaded epoxies were found to exhibit minimal electrical property variation after ageing for 500 h, …

Using first-principles calculation, we propose an interface structure for single triple-layer FeSe on the SrTiO3(001) surface, a high-Tc superconductor found recently. The key component of this structure is the oxygen deficiency on the top layer of the SrTiO3 substrate, as a result of Se etching used in preparing the high-Tc samples. The O vacancies strongly bind the FeSe triple layer to the substrate giving rise to a (2 x 1) reconstruction, as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Morphology-controlled bilayer TiO2 nanostructures consisting of one-dimensional (1D) nanowire bottom arrays and a three-dimensional (3D) dendritic microsphere top layer were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. These novel 1D-3D bilayer photoanodes demonstrated the highest energy conversion efficiency of 7.2% for rutile TiO2 dye-sensitized solar cells to date, with TiCl4 post-treatment.

In an effort to broaden the search for high-capacity hydrogen storage materials, three triborane compounds, NaB3H8, NH 3B3H7, and NH4B3H 8, were studied. In addition to hydrogen, thermal decomposition also releases volatile boranes, and the relative amounts and species depend on the cations (Na+, NH4 +) and the Lewis base (NH 3). Static-sample hydrogen NMR is used to probe molecular motion in the three solids. In each case, the line width decreases from low temperatures to room temperature in accordance with a model of isotropic or nearly isotropic reorientations. Combined voltage and magneto-optical study of magnetic flux flow in superconducting NbN films is reported. The nanosecond-scale voltage pulses appearing during thermomagnetic avalanches have been recorded in films partially coated by a metal layer. Simultaneous magneto-optical imaging and voltage measurements allowed the pulses to be associated with individual flux branches penetrating the superconductor below the metal coating. From detailed characteristics of pulse and flux branches, the electrical field in the superconductor is found to be in the range of 5-50 kV/m, while the propagation speed of the avalanche during its final stage is found to be close to 5 km/s.

The stress gradient generated due to electrochemical oxidation/reduction of a conducting polymer in a bilayer actuator causes a bending movement. Here we report a comparative study of the displacement of bilayer actuators prepared using different conducting polymers. The effects of conducting polymers obtained from electrochemical or chemical synthesis route: different polymers (polypyrrole (PPy), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) PEDOT and poly(3,3-dihexyl-3-4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4b][1,4]-dioxepine [PProDOT(Hx) 2]); and different electrolytes (0.1 M lithium trifluromethanesulfonate/propylenecarbonate (LiTFSI/PC) and 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium trifluromethanesulfonate (EMITFSI)) on the displacement amplitude and displacement patterns of these actuators were investigated and compared. A binder-free titania paste was prepared by chemical modification of an acidic TiO2 sol with ammonia. By varying the ammonia concentration, the viscosity of the acidic TiO2 suspension increased, thereby allowing uniform films to be cast. The photoelectrochemical performance of TiO2 electrodes, cast as single layers, was dependent on the thermal treatment cycle. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize the extent of residual organics and found that acetates from the TiO2 precursor preparation were retained within the electrode structure after thermal treatment at 150 °C. We explored the orbital structure of FeTiO3 with polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectra complemented with electronic structure calculations. The electronic structure, near the bottom of conduction band, is composed of O 2p and Ti 3d orbitals. Ti 3d/4p hybridization dominantly lies on the ab plane. The highly delocalized Ti 4p orbital might hybridize with O 2p orbital and even extend to the next-neighbor Fe atom whereby establishing a linear orbital combination of Ti-O-Fe. A clear picture of the orbital construction in FeTiO3 will help to elucidate the paths of pressure-induced charge transfer and other physical or magnetic characteristics.

Blue emission fluorescent Au5 clusters with maximum quantum yield of 20.1% were synthesized by a simple photoreduction method using three specially designed tridentate polymer ligands. The evolution of fluorescent Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) under UV irradiation was studied by fluorescence, UV-Vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques, suggesting that the fluorescence of Au NCs is size-dependent and is associated with the presence of Au(i) ions in the Au NCs. The effect of polymer structure on the fluorescent Au NCs has also been discussed. These highly fluorescent Au NCs have potential applications in the fabrication of optoelectronic devices and light emitting materials.

The classical problem of magnetic stripe domain behavior in films and plates with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is addressed. Exact analytical results are derived for the stripe domain widths as a function of applied perpendicular field H, in the regime where the domain period becomes large. The stripe period diverges as (H-c - H)(-1/2), where H-c is the critical (infinite period) field, an exact result confirming a previous conjecture. The magnetization approaches saturation as (H-c - H)(1/2), a behavior that compares excellently with experimental data obtained for a 4-mu m thick ferrite garnet film. An epitaxial La0.8Ca0.2MnO3/LaAlO 3 (LCMO/LAO) thin film was fabricated using the pulsed laser deposition technique to evaluate the correlation between the crystal structure and the magnetocaloric effect. In our study, the LCMO film was 200 nm in thickness and appeared to have a strong out-of plane texture. We found that each column in the LCMO thin film layer is a domain which has a different ordering direction. These microscopic feature results in anisotropic properties of magnetization, entropy, and relative cooling power. A comprehensive study on the effects of sintering temperature on graphene-doped MgB2 superconductor was conducted. Graphene has emerged as an effective dopant that is capable of improving the critical current density (J-{\rm c}) and flux pinning at a very low doping level, with only a slight reduction of the critical temperature (T-{\rm c}). We use a selective reduction reaction to fabricate a new kind of dual composite, which has a "composite-within-a-composite" structure. Based on the different reduction behavior of Fe2O3, an Fe-rich structure (Fe-Fe3O4-Al2O3) is formed in an Al-rich structure (FeAl2O4-Al2O3). Controlling protein interactions at the implanted electrode interface is becoming an important strategy for the management of foreign body responses that have proven to be detrimental to the long-term performance of neural prosthesis. In this study, PEGylation was conducted on platinum bio-electrodes to render the surface protein-resistant. The PEGylated electrode was investigated using a quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetiy.

Injury to nerve tissue in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) results in long-term impairment of limb function, dysaesthesia and pain, often with associated psychological effects. Whilst minor injuries can be left to regenerate without intervention and short gaps up to 2 cm can be sutured, larger or more severe injuries commonly require autogenous nerve grafts harvested from elsewhere in the body (usually sensory nerves). Neural recording electrodes suffer from poor signal to noise ratio, charge density, biostability and biocompatibility. This paper investigates the ability of conducting polymer coated electrodes to record acute neural response in a systematic manner, allowing in depth comparison of electrochemical and electrophysiological response. Approach. Polypyrrole (Ppy) and poly-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) doped with sulphate (SO4) or para-toluene sulfonate (pTS) were used to coat iridium neural recording electrodes. Sodium ion battery is a promising electrical energy storage system for sustainable energy storage applications due to the abundance of sodium resources and their low cost. In this communication, the electrochemical properties of sodium ion storage in reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were studied in an electrolyte consisting of 1 M NaClO4 in propylene carbonate (PC). The experimental results show that the RGO anode allowed significant sodium ion insertion, leading to higher capacity at high current density compared to the previously reported results for carbon materials. We report on the coherent control of terahertz (THz) spin waves in a canted antiferromagnet yttrium orthoferrite, YFeO3, associated with a quasiferromagnetic (quasi-FM) spin resonance at a frequency of 0.3 THz, using a single-incident THz pulse. The spin resonance is excited impulsively by the magnetic field component of the THz pulse. The intrinsic dielectric anisotropy of YFeO3 in the THz range allows for coherent control of both the amplitude and the phase of the excited spin wave. Bioelectrochemical systems encompass a range of electrochemical systems wherein microorganisms are used as biocatalysts. These range from classical microbial fuel cells to novel microbial electrosynthesis processes. The future of practical applications relies on increased performance. In this paper, attempts to dope polypyrrole (PPy) with two small sized anionic drugs, diclofenac sodium salt (NaDF) and valproic acid sodium salt (NaVPA), are described. For PPy doped with DF-, unusual patterns in growth and morphology were observed. During the deposition of the polymer, the rate of electropolymerisation decreased with increasing time and higher applied potentials. The polymer had features of an insulating film, while SEM confirmed the presence of crystal-like shards on the surface of the polymer. Analyses of these crystals indicate them to be drug that may have precipitated out of solution. These findings suggest that insoluble …
