Ice-Age Megafauna In Arctic Alaska: Extinction, Invasion, Survival, Daniel H. Mann, Pamela Groves, Michael L. Kunz, Richard E. Reanier, Benjamin V. Gaglioti Jan 2013

Ice-Age Megafauna In Arctic Alaska: Extinction, Invasion, Survival, Daniel H. Mann, Pamela Groves, Michael L. Kunz, Richard E. Reanier, Benjamin V. Gaglioti

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Radical restructuring of the terrestrial, large mammal fauna living in arctic Alaska occurred between 14,000 and 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. Steppe bison, horse, and woolly mammoth became extinct, moose and humans invaded, while muskox and caribou persisted. The ice age mega fauna was more diverse in species and possibly contained 6x more individual animals than live in the region today. Mega faunal biomass during the last ice age may have been 30x greater than present. Horse was the dominant species in terms of number of individuals. Lions, short-faced bears, wolves, and possibly grizzly …

Origin Of The Sinai-Negev Erg, Egypt And Israel: Mineralogical And Geochemical Evidence For The Importance Of The Nile And Sea Level History, Daniel R. Muhs, Joel Roskin, Haim Tsoar, Gary Skipp, James Budahn, Amihai Sneh, Naomi Porat, Jean-Daniel Stanley, Itzhak Katra, Dan G. Blumberg Jan 2013

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Sinai-Negev erg occupies an area of 13,000 km2 in the deserts of Egypt and Israel. Aeolian sand of this erg has been proposed to be derived from the Nile Delta, but empirical data supporting this view are lacking. An alternative source sediment is sand from the large Wadi El Arish drainage system in central and northern Sinai. Mineralogy of the Negev and Sinai dunes shows that they are high in quartz, with much smaller amounts of K-feldspar and plagioclase. Both Nile Delta sands and Sinai wadi sands, upstream of the dunes, also have high amounts of quartz relative …

Chronology And Provenance Of Last-Glacial (Peoria) Loess In Western Iowa And Paleoclimatic Implications, Daniel R. Muhs, E. Arthur Bettis Iii, Helen M. Roberts, Stephen S. Harlan, James B. Paces, Richard L. Reynolds Jan 2013

Chronology And Provenance Of Last-Glacial (Peoria) Loess In Western Iowa And Paleoclimatic Implications, Daniel R. Muhs, E. Arthur Bettis Iii, Helen M. Roberts, Stephen S. Harlan, James B. Paces, Richard L. Reynolds

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Geologic archives show that the Earth was dustier during the last glacial period. One model suggests that increased gustiness (stronger, more frequent winds) enhanced dustiness. We tested this at Loveland, Iowa, one of the thickest deposits of last-glacial-age (Peoria) loess in the world. Based on K/Rb and Ba/Rb, loess was derived not only from glaciogenic sources of the Missouri River, but also distal loess from non-glacial sources in Nebraska. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages provide the first detailed chronology of Peoria Loess at Loveland. Deposition began after ~27 ka and continued until ~17 ka. OSL ages also indicate that mass …

Toxic Exposure Of Songbirds To Lead In The Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District, W. Nelson Beyer, J. Christian Franson, John B. French, Thomas May, Barnett A. Rattner, Valerie I. Shearn-Bochsler, Sarah E. Warner, John Weber, David Mosby Jan 2013

Toxic Exposure Of Songbirds To Lead In The Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District, W. Nelson Beyer, J. Christian Franson, John B. French, Thomas May, Barnett A. Rattner, Valerie I. Shearn-Bochsler, Sarah E. Warner, John Weber, David Mosby

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Mining and smelting in the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District has caused widespread contamination of soils with lead (Pb) and other metals. Soils from three study sites sampled in the district contained from approximately 1,000–3,200 mg Pb/kg. Analyses of earthworms [33–4,600 mg Pb/kg dry weight (dw)] collected in the district showed likely high Pb exposure of songbirds preying on soil organisms. Mean tissue Pb concentrations in songbirds collected from the contaminated sites were greater (p < 0.05) than those in songbirds from reference sites by factors of 8 in blood, 13 in liver, and 23 in kidney. Ranges of Pb concentrations in livers (mg Pb/kg dw) were as follows: northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) = 0.11–3.0 (reference) and 1.3–30 (contaminated) and American robin (Turdus migratorius) = 0.43–8.5 (reference) and 7.6–72 (contaminated). Of 34 …

A Global Standard For Monitoring Coastal Wetland Vulnerability To Accelerated Sea-Level Rise, Edward L. Webb, Daniel A. Friess, Ken W. Krauss, Donald R. Cahoon, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Jacob Phelps Jan 2013

A Global Standard For Monitoring Coastal Wetland Vulnerability To Accelerated Sea-Level Rise, Edward L. Webb, Daniel A. Friess, Ken W. Krauss, Donald R. Cahoon, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Jacob Phelps

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Sea-level rise threatens coastal salt-marshes and mangrove forests around the world, and a key determinant of coastal wetland vulnerability is whether its surface elevation can keep pace with rising sea level. Globally, a large data gap exists because wetland surface and shallow subsurface processes remain unaccounted for by traditional vulnerability assessments using tide gauges. Moreover, those processes vary substantially across wetlands, so modelling platforms require relevant local data. The low-cost, simple, high-precision rod surface-elevation table–marker horizon (RSET-MH) method fills this critical data gap, can be paired with spatial data sets and modelling and is financially and technically accessible to every …

Spatially Explicit Models For Inference About Density In Unmarked Or Partially Marked Populations, Richard B. Chandler, J. Andrew Royle Jan 2013

Spatially Explicit Models For Inference About Density In Unmarked Or Partially Marked Populations, Richard B. Chandler, J. Andrew Royle

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Recently developed spatial capture-recapture (SCR) models represent a major advance over traditional capture-recapture (CR) models because they yield explicit estimates of animal density instead of population size within an unknown area. Furthermore, unlike non-spatial CR methods, SCR models account for heterogeneity in capture probability arising from the juxtaposition of animal activity centers and sample locations. Although the utility of SCR methods is gaining recognition, the requirement that all individuals can be uniquely identified excludes their use in many contexts. In this paper, we develop models for situations in which individual recognition is not possible, thereby allowing SCR concepts to be …

Carbon Storage And Sequestration By Trees In Urban And Community Areas Of The United States, David J. Nowak, Eric J. Greenfield, Robert E. Hoehn, Elizabeth Lapoint

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Carbon storage and sequestration by urban trees in the United States was quantified to assess the magnitude and role of urban forests in relation to climate change. Urban tree field data from 28 cities and 6 states were used to determine the average carbon density per unit of tree cover. These data were applied to statewide urban tree cover measurements to determine total urban forest carbon storage and annual sequestration by state and nationally. Urban whole tree carbon storage densities average 7.69 kg C m‒2 of tree cover and sequestration densities average 0.28 kg C m‒2 of tree …

Evaluating Population Connectivity For Species Of Conservation Concern In The American Great Plains, Samuel A. Cushman, Erin L. Landguth, Curtis H. Flather

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Habitat loss and fragmentation are widely recognized as among the most important threats to global biodiversity. New analytical approaches are providing an improved ability to predict the effects of landscape change on population connectivity at vast spatial extents. This paper presents an analysis of population connectivity for three species of conservation concern [swift fox (Vulpes velox); lesser prairie-chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus); massasuaga (Sistrurus catenatus)] across the American Great Plains region. We used factorial least-cost path and resistant kernel analyses to predict effects of landscape conditions on corridor network connectivity. Our predictions of population connectivity provide …

Scaling Of The Coercive Field In Ferroelectrics At The Nanoscale, R. V. Gaynutdinov, M. Minnekaev, S. Mitko, A. L. Tolstikhina, A. Zenkevich, Stephen Ducharme, Vladimir M. Fridkin Jan 2013

Scaling Of The Coercive Field In Ferroelectrics At The Nanoscale, R. V. Gaynutdinov, M. Minnekaev, S. Mitko, A. L. Tolstikhina, A. Zenkevich, Stephen Ducharme, Vladimir M. Fridkin

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The scaling of the coercive field in ferroelectric films at the nanoscale is investigated experimentally. The scaling in the films of copolymer vinylidene fluoride and BaTiO3 with thickness equal by the order of value to the critical domain nucleus size 1–10 nm reveals deviation from the well-known Kay–Dunn law. At this thickness region coercive field does not depend on thickness and coincides with Landau–Ginzburg–Devonshire value.

Rhodizonic Acid On Noble Metals: Surface Reactivity And Coordination Chemistry, Donna A. Kunkel, James Hooper, Scott Simpson, Sumit Beniwal, Katie L. Morrow, Douglas C. Smith, Kimberly Cousins, Stephen Ducharme, Eva Zurek, Axel Enders Jan 2013

Rhodizonic Acid On Noble Metals: Surface Reactivity And Coordination Chemistry, Donna A. Kunkel, James Hooper, Scott Simpson, Sumit Beniwal, Katie L. Morrow, Douglas C. Smith, Kimberly Cousins, Stephen Ducharme, Eva Zurek, Axel Enders

Stephen Ducharme Publications

A study of the two-dimensional crystallization of rhodizonic acid on the crystalline surfaces of gold and copper is presented. Rhodizonic acid, a cyclic oxocarbon related to the ferroelectric croconic acid and the antiferroelectric squaric acid, has not been synthesized in bulk crystalline form yet. Capitalizing on surface-assisted molecular self-assembly, a two-dimensional analogue to the well-known solution-based coordination chemistry, two-dimensional structures of rhodizonic acid were stabilized under ultrahigh vacuum on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces. Scanning tunneling microscopy, coupled with first-principles calculations, reveals that on the less reactive Au surface, extended two-dimensional islands of rhodizonic acid are formed, in which the molecules …

Colon-Santana, Xin Zhang, Pankaj Sharma, Alexei Gruverman, Peter A. Dowben, Luis G. Rosa Jan 2013

Changing Molecular Band Offsets In Polymer Blends Of (P3ht/P(Vdf–Trfe)) Poly(3-Hexylthiophene) And Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride With Trifluoroethylene) Due To Ferroelectric Poling, Freddy Wong, Godohaldo Perez, Manuel Bonilla, Juan A. Colon-Santana, Xin Zhang, Pankaj Sharma, Alexei Gruverman, Peter A. Dowben, Luis G. Rosa

Peter Dowben Publications

Photoelectron emission and inverse photoemission spectroscopy studies of polymer blends of poly(vinylidene fluoride (70%) – trifluoroethylene (30%)) P(VDF–TrFE 70 : 30) and regio-regular poly(3- hexylthiophene) (P3HT) provide evidence of changes in the molecular band offsets as a result of changes in the ferroelectric polarization in P(VDF–TrFE). Investigation of the blends with higher concentrations of the semiconducting P3HT component revealed that the organic semiconductor component of the blend dominates the electronic structure in the vicinity of the chemical potential. Specifically, the states of P3HT at the conduction band minimum and valence band maximum fall within the HOMO–LUMO gap of the dielectric …

Magnetoelectric Coupling At The Euo/Batio3 Interface, Shi Cao, P Liu, Jinke Tang, Haidong Lu, C W. Bark, Sangjin Ryu, Chang-Beom Eom, Alexei Gruverman, Peter A. Dowben Jan 2013

Magnetoelectric Coupling At The Euo/Batio3 Interface, Shi Cao, P Liu, Jinke Tang, Haidong Lu, C W. Bark, Sangjin Ryu, Chang-Beom Eom, Alexei Gruverman, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Magnetization modulation by ferroelectric polarization switching is reported for the ferromagnetic-ferroelectric EuO/BaTiO3heterostructure. The value of the magnetization critical exponent β is consistent with the expected Heisenberg-like ferromagnetism of EuO and reported Curie temperature. The critical exponent is seen to decrease with increased magnetic coupling. The results are discussed in the context of data obtained earlier for epitaxial La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/BaTiO3 heterostructures, where magnetization increases and critical exponent b also declines with ferroelectric polarization pointing away from ferromagnetic layer. The observed similarity between two systems illustrates an importance of charge doping in magnetoelectric coupling, …

Reversible Mn Segregation At The Polar Surface Of Lithium Tetraborate, Christina Dugan, Robert L. Hengehold, Steve R. Mchale, Juan A. Colon Santana, John W. Mcclory, V T. Adamiv, Ya V. Burak, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We find Mn surface segregation for single crystals of Mn doped Li2B4O7, nominally Li1.95Mn0.05 B4O7(001), but as the temperature increases, evidence of this Mn surface segregation diminishes significantly. At room temperature, the surface photovoltaic charging is significant for this pyroelectric material but is quenched at a temperature well below that seen for the undoped Li2B4O7 samples. The suppression of surface charging in the region of 120°C that accompanies the temperature of Mn dissolution in the bulk of Li2B4O …

Grand Challenges In Condensed Matter Physics: From Knowledge To Innovation, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Condensed Matter Physics (CMP) explores the fundamental properties of matter and their origins resulting from the interactions of a large number of atoms and electrons. The intricate nature of these interactions results in properties and associated phenomena that often hint at a rich vein of underlying physics. Although the perspective is changing constantly with new discoveries, the basic challenges in CMP are to predict and observe new phenomena and elucidate novel properties of materials often pushing at the frontiers of quantum mechanics [1].

CMP is also a field which stimulates technological innovation that revolutionizes modern society. For more than five …

Exafs And Epr Analysis Of The Local Structure Of Mn-Doped Li2B4O7, T D. Kelly, L Kong, D A. Buchanan, A T. Brant, J. C. Petrosky, J W. Mcclory, V T. Adamiv, Y V. Burak, Peter A. Dowben Jan 2013

Peter Dowben Publications

The local structure of Mn-doped Li2B4O7(001) was investigated using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at the Mn K edge and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The location of the Mn dopant in a lithium tetraborate crystal is consistent with occupation of a site with strong oxygen coordination. The Mn–O bond lengths are similar to those observed with Mn doping of the icosahedral based boron carbide whereMnis in a substitutional dopant in one of the cage sites. From EXAFS, the manganese does not appear to greatly alter the overall tetragonal form of lithium tetraborate, with …

Gamma And X-Ray Sensitivity Of Gd2O3 Heterojunctions, Juan A. Colon Santana, C M. Young, J W. Mcclory, J C. Petrosky, X Wang, P Liu, Jinke Tang, V T. Adamiv, Ya V. Burak, Keisuke Fukutani, Peter A. Dowben Jan 2013

Gamma And X-Ray Sensitivity Of Gd2O3 Heterojunctions, Juan A. Colon Santana, C M. Young, J W. Mcclory, J C. Petrosky, X Wang, P Liu, Jinke Tang, V T. Adamiv, Ya V. Burak, Keisuke Fukutani, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

We find that Gd2O3 thin films strongly favor a (-402) texture growth on a variety of substrates and will form heterojunction diodes with silicon, especially when doped with oxygen vacancies. Even in the thin film limit, these heterojunction diodes appear to be sensitive to gamma radiation, likely from the X-rays created by scattering events, adding to the numerous hurdles that must be overcome if Gd based semiconductor devices are to be used for solid state neutron detection applications.

Peter Dowben Publications

We experimentally investigate the electronic structure of the strongly dipolar, quinonoid-type molecule obtained by TCNQH-functionalization (TCNQH = (NC)2CC6H4CH(CN)2) of (6Z)-4-(butylamino)-6-(butyliminio)- 3-oxocyclohexa-1,4-dien-1-olate C6H2(...NHR)2(...O)2 (where R = n-C4H9) to be very similar after deposition from solution on either graphene or gold substrates. These zwitterion adsorbate thin films form structures that are distinct from those formed by related quinonoid molecules previously studied. We argue that adsorbate–adsorbate interactions dominate and lead to a Stranski–Krastanov ‘island growth’ mechanism.

Jurassic Earthquake Sequence Recorded By Multiple Generations Of Sand Blows, Zion National Park, Utah, David Loope, James F. Elder, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Richard M. Kettler, Darryll T. Pederson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Earthquakes along convergent plate boundaries commonly occur in sequences that are complete within 1 yr, and may include 8–10 events strong enough to generate sand blows. Dune crossbeds within the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone of Utah (western United States) enclose intact and truncated sand blows, and the intrusive structures that fed them. We mapped the distribution of more than 800 soft-sediment dikes and pipes at two small sites. All water-escape structures intersect a single paleo-surface, and are limited to the upper portion of the underlying set of cross-strata and the lower portion of the overlying set. A small portion of one …

The Freshwater System West Of The Antarctic Peninsula: Spatial And Temporal Changes, Michael P. Meredith, Hugh J. Venables, Andrew Clarke, Hugh W. Ducklow, Matthew Erickson, Melanie J. Leng, Jan T. M. Lenaerts, Michiel R. Van Den Broeke

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Climate change west of the Antarctic Peninsula is the most rapid of anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere, with associated changes in the rates and distributions of freshwater inputs to the ocean. Here, results from the first comprehensive survey of oxygen isotopes in seawater in this region are used to quantify spatial patterns of meteoric water (glacial discharge and precipitation) separately from sea ice melt. High levels of meteoric water are found close to the coast, due to orographic effects on precipitation and strong glacial discharge. Concentrations decrease offshore, driving significant southward geostrophic flows (up to ;30 cm s21). These produce …

Salinity And Climate Reconstructions From Continental Lakes, Sherilyn C. Fritz Jan 2013

Salinity And Climate Reconstructions From Continental Lakes, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Diatoms are widely used to reconstruct past environments because of their sensitivity to a range of environmental variables. Among the variables that exert a strong influence on diatoms are ionic concentration, expressed as salinity or conductivity, and ionic composition. Because the ionic concentration and composition of inland water bodies is affected by changes in effective moisture (precipitation minus evaporation, P – E), changes in the abundance of diatom species that vary in their salinity tolerances provide a tool for the reconstruction of past climate.

Dynamic Diatom Response To Changing Climate 0-1.2 Ma At Lake El'gygytgyn, Far East Russian Arctic, Jeffrey Allan Snyder, M. V. Cheraponova, A. Bryan Jan 2013

Dynamic Diatom Response To Changing Climate 0-1.2 Ma At Lake El'gygytgyn, Far East Russian Arctic, Jeffrey Allan Snyder, M. V. Cheraponova, A. Bryan

School of Earth, Environment and Society Faculty Publications

The Lake El' gygytgyn sediment record contains an abundant diatom flora through most intervals of the lake's history, providing a means to create and test hypotheses concerning the lake's response to changing climates. The 0 1.2 Ma core interval is characterized by shifts in the dominant planktonic genera and events of exceptional concentration and diversity. Warm interglacial intervals have enhanced concentration and diversity of the plankton. This response is most extreme during exceptional events corresponding to marine isotope stages (MIS) 11 and 31. Diatom concentration and diversity also increase during some cold intervals (e.g., MIS 2), suggesting conditions of lake …

A Gridded Reconstruction Of Warm Season Precipitation For Asia Spanning The Past Half Millennium, Song Feng, Q. Steven Hu, Qianru Wu, Michael E. Mann

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The authors reconstructed May–September precipitation over the Asian continent (5°–55°N, 60°–135°E) back to AD 1470 on the basis of tree-ring data, historical documentary records, ice core records, and the few long-term instrumental data series available in the region. They employed the method of Regularized Expectation Maximization (RegEM) and applied it to 44 subregions within the continent. Verification exercises demonstrate that the reconstruction is skillful over most of the study domain, with eastern China, India, and other regions of humid climate displaying the greatest skill. Lower reconstruction skill is observed in semiarid and arid regions, which was attributable at least in …

Optimal Estimation For Global Ground-Level Fine Particulate Matter Concentrations, Aaron Van Donkelaar, Randall V. Martin, Robert J. D. Spurr, Eason Drury, Lorraine A. Remer, Robert C. Levy, Jun Wang

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

We develop an optimal estimation (OE) algorithm based on top-of-atmosphere reflectances observed by the MODIS satellite instrument to retrieve near-surface fine particulatematter (PM2.5). The GEOS-Chem chemical transport model is used to provide prior information for the Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrieval and to relate total column AOD to PM2.5. We adjust the shape of the GEOS-Chem relative vertical extinction profiles by comparison with lidar retrievals from the CALIOP satellite instrument. Surface reflectance relationships used in the OE algorithm are indexed by land type. Error quantities needed for this OE algorithm are inferred by comparison with AOD …

Constraints On Aerosol Sources Using Geos-Chem Adjoint And Modis Radiances, And Evaluation With Multisensor (Omi, Misr) Data, Xiaoguang Xu, Jun Wang, Daven Henze, Wenjun Qu, Monika Kopacz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

We present a new top-down approach that spatially constrains the amount of aerosol emissions using satellite (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)) observed radiances with the adjoint of a chemistry transport model (GEOS-Chem). This paper aims to demonstrate the approach through applying it to a case study that yields the following emission estimates over China for April 2008: 1.73 Tg for SO2, 0.72 Tg for NH3, 1.38 Tg for NOx, 0.10 Tg for black carbon, and 0.18 Tg for organic carbon from anthropogenic sources, which reflects, respectively, a reduction of 33.5%, 34.5%, 18.8%, 9.1%, and 15% in comparison to the prior …
