Researchers Pool Knowledge About Antarctic Dry Valleys, Andrew G. Fountain, Sarah Spaulding

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Most of us think of ice when we think of the Antarctic, and rightly so, considering that only 5% of it is ice-free. Dry valleys--the ice-free areas--have sandy, rocky valley floors, ice-covered lakes, and streams that flow only two months of the year. The McMurdo Dry Valleys (78øS 163øE) are the largest of these regions.

Microanalytical Investigations Of Gold-Bearing Rocks From The An Najadi Region In Saudi Arabia, Nazrul I. Khandaker, M. Ahmed, M. M. Hariri, M. A. Garwan, K. R. Khan, M. M. Al-Ohali

Publications and Research

The Proton Induced X-ray Emission technique with a scanning microbeam (micro-PIXE) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were employed to study gold-bearing rocks from the An Najadi and adjacent regions situated within the exposed northeastern part of the Arabian Shield. These microanalytical investigations, together with routine petrological and ore microscopic studies, demonstrated the presence of important partitioning of major minerals and trace elements in several samples. These measurements also revealed microstructural features including brecciation within quartz grains and metal concentrations within these fracture-controlled micro-conduits. Results showed promise in terms of using distinctive geochemical signatures for ore body recognition. Of particular interest …

On-Line File Caching, Neal E. Young Jul 1997

On-Line File Caching, Neal E. Young

Computer Science Technical Reports

Consider the following file caching problem: in response to a sequence of requests for files, where each file has a specified size and retrieval cost, maintain a cache of files of total size at most some specified k so as to minimize the total retrieval cost. Specifically, when a requested file is not in the cache, bring it into the cache, pay the retrieval cost, and choose files to remove from the cache so that the total size of files in the cache is at most k. This problem generalizes previous paging and caching problems by allowing objects of arbitrary …

Core Scattering Of Stark Wave Packets, M. L. Naudeau, C. I. Sukenik, P. H. Bucksbaum

Physics Faculty Publications

We investigate the wave packet dynamics of electrons bound in the nonseparable potential of cesium in a static electric field using time-domain Ramsey interferometry. Specially shaped wave packets with low radial dispersion enable us to view the interaction between the wave packet and the atomic core. Experiments in cesium, together with quantum defect calculations of cesium and hydrogen, demonstrate changes in the motion and shape of these wave packets due to core scattering.

Using The Simplex Code To Construct Relative Difference Sets In 2-Groups, James A. Davis, Surinder K. Sehgal

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Relative Difference Sets with the parameters (2a, 2b, 2a, 2a-b) have been constructed many ways (see [2], [3], [5], [6], and [7] for examples). This paper modifies an example found in [1] to construct a family of relative difference sets in 2-groups that gives examples for b = 2 and b = 3 that have a lower rank than previous examples. The Simplex code is used in the construction.

Relative Motion Between The Caribbean And North American Plates And Related Boundary Zone Deformation From A Decade Of Gps Observations, Timothy H. Dixon, Frederic Farina, Charles Demets, Pamela Jansma, Paul Mann, Eric Calais

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements in 1986, 1994, and 1995 at sites in Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Grand Turk define the velocity of the Caribbean plate relative to North America. The data show eastward motion of the Caribbean plate at a rate of 21 ± 1 mm/yr (1 standard error ) in the vicinity of southern Dominican Republic, a factor of 2 higher than the NUVEL-1A plate motion model prediction of 11 ± 3 mm/yr. Independent measurements on San Andres Island, and an Euler vector derived from these data, also suggest a rate that is much higher than …

Dynamic Load Distribution In Mist, K. Al-Saqabi, R. M. Prouty, Dylan Mcnamee, Steve Otto, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents an algorithm for scheduling parallel applications in large-scale, multiuser, heterogeneous distributed systems. The approach is primarily targeted at systems that harvest idle cycles in general-purpose workstation networks, but is also applicable to clustered computer systems and massively parallel processors. The algorithm handles unequal processor capacities, multiple architecture types and dynamic variations in the number of processes and available processors. Scheduling decisions are driven by the desire to minimize turnaround time while maintaining fairness among competing applications. For efficiency, the virtual processors (VPs) of each application are gang scheduled on some subset of the available physical processors.

Auslander Systems, K. N. Haddad, Aimee S. A. Johnson Jul 1997

Auslander Systems, K. N. Haddad, Aimee S. A. Johnson

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

The authors generalize the dynamical system constructed by J. Auslander in 1959, resulting in perhaps the simplest family of examples of minimal but not strictly ergodic systems. A characterization of unique ergodicity and mean-L-stability is given. The new systems are also shown to have zero topological entropy and fail to be weakly rigid. Some results on the set of idempotents in the enveloping semigroup are also achieved.

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Experimental and theoretical studies are reported on the inelastic (Raman) scattering of wavelength-selected polarized x rays from the K edge of gas-phase chlorine molecules. The polarized emission spectra exhibit prominent nondipole features consequent of phase variations of the incident and emitted radiation over molecular dimensions, as predicted by the Kramers-Heisenberg scattering formalism. Issues pursuant to the detection of core-hole localization by resonant Raman scattering from homonuclear diatomic molecules are critically examined. [S0031-9007(97)03486-8]

High-Order Finite-Difference Schemes And Their Application To Computational Acoustics, Joe Leo Manthey Jul 1997

High-Order Finite-Difference Schemes And Their Application To Computational Acoustics, Joe Leo Manthey

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The primary focus of this study is upon the numerical stability of high-order finite-difference schemes and their application to duct acoustics. Since acoustic waves are known to be non-dissipative and non-dispersive, high-order schemes are favored for their low dissipation and low dispersion relative to the low-order schemes. The primary obstacle to the the development of explicit high-order finite-difference schemes is the construction of boundary closures which simultaneously maintain the formal order of accuracy and the numerical stability of the overall scheme. In this thesis a hybrid seven-point, fourth-order stencil for computing spatial derivatives is presented and the time stability is …

To reflect this goal, this year's workshop included a hot program made up of (i) a keynote address on "Programming Telecommunications Networks"; (ii) panels addressing "QOS for Distributed Object Computing Middleware --- Fact or Fiction?" and "Reservations about Reservations"; (iii) a …

Investigation Of Drag Reduction On A Two-Dimensional Circular Cylinder By Ejecting Jet From The Rear Stagnation Region, Satoshi Atsuchi Jul 1997

Investigation Of Drag Reduction On A Two-Dimensional Circular Cylinder By Ejecting Jet From The Rear Stagnation Region, Satoshi Atsuchi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Extensive work in the field of drag reduction has been done in the past. However, this field of study is highly desirable today because of various high-speed research programs. The present study attempts to investigate the feasibility of drag reduction on a cylinder by flow injection from the rear stagnation region. A two-dimensional circular cylinder at Reynolds number l x105with a jet ejected from its tail is selected as a physical model. To tackle this problem, a numerical simulation as well as an experimental approach were used. Despite the recent development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), computing a …

Evaluation Of Solid Phase Extraction Followed By Supercritical Fluid Elution Of Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds In Toxicity Characteristic Leachates, William Edward Corl Iii Jul 1997

Evaluation Of Solid Phase Extraction Followed By Supercritical Fluid Elution Of Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds In Toxicity Characteristic Leachates, William Edward Corl Iii

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) to determine the potential for unknown wastes to leach haz.ardous constituents into the environment. Methods currently being used for the extraction of semi-volatile organic compounds from aqueous TCLP leachates involve acid/base partitioning into methylene chloride. The concentrated extract is then analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The methods are either timeconsuming or labor intensive and they generate significant volumes of haz.ardous wastes themselves. Considering the haz.ards and disposal costs of methylene chloride wastes, great interest has been elicited by the EPA in other extraction techniques which would reduce …

The bench-scale testing of gasoline and diesel contaminated soil using three test soil vessels and one control soil vessel was performed in a laboratory setting for a six week time period. The control soil received no treatment other than distilled water to maintain soil moisture. Treatment 1 consisted of direct application of liquid municipal biologic sludge on a weekly basis. Treatment 2 consisted of the addition of 30 Eisenia foetida earthworms and distilled water. Treatment 3 consisted of direct application of …

Fabrication And Evaluation Of Boron-Doped Cvd Diamond Microelectrodes, Song Pang Jul 1997

Fabrication And Evaluation Of Boron-Doped Cvd Diamond Microelectrodes, Song Pang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The electrochemical behavior of boron-doped diamond microelectrodes has been studied in acetonitrile solutions containing two redox couples using cyclic voltammetry. One test system is 1-2.5 mM ferrocene, containing 0.1 M Tetrabutyl ammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAH). This well-known reversible redox system involves only one electron transfer with little or no change in the solvation sphere and no breakage/formation of chemical bonds. Another test system is a 1 mM S2Mo180644- solution containing 0.1 M HCIO4. This is one of the most complicated redox systems. In the presence of acid, electrons are usually transferred consecutively and …

Reverse Engineering Of Aircraft Wing Data Using A Partial Differential Equation Surface Model, Jacalyn M. Huband Jul 1997

Reverse Engineering Of Aircraft Wing Data Using A Partial Differential Equation Surface Model, Jacalyn M. Huband

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Reverse engineering is a multi-step process used in industry to determine a production representation of an existing physical object. This representation is in the form of mathematical equations that are compatible with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) equipment. The four basic steps to the reverse engineering process are data acquisition, data separation, surface or curve fitting, and CAD/CAM production. The surface fitting step determines the design representation of the object, and thus is critical to the success or failure of the reverse engineering process. Although surface fitting methods described in the literature are used to model a variety of …

Stomach Content Analysis Of Stranded Bottlenose Dolphins, Tursiops Truncatus, In Virginia, 1987-1996, John Mcgurk

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

I examined the stomach contents from 94 bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, that were stranded along the Virginia coastline from 1987 through 1996. Samples from 1987 through 1991 were obtained from the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) and samples from 1992 through 1996 were collected by the Virginia Marine Science Museum (VMSM) Stranding Team. Prey species were identified using fish otoliths and cephalopod beaks.

The dolphins examined fed on 23 species of fish and one genus of cephalopods. The primary prey species was Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus); secondary species were weakfish (Cynoscion regalia), spot (Leiostomus xanthurus), silver perch (Bairdiella chrysoura), …

Physical Parameterization Of Stellar Spectra: The Neural Network Approach, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones, Ted Von Hippel, Mike Irwin, Gerard Gilmore Jul 1997

Physical Parameterization Of Stellar Spectra: The Neural Network Approach, Coryn A.L. Bailer-Jones, Ted Von Hippel, Mike Irwin, Gerard Gilmore

Publications

We present a technique which employs artificial neural networks to produce physical parameters for stellar spectra. A neural network is trained on a set of synthetic optical stellar spectra to give physical parameters (e.g. Teff, log g, [M/H]). The network is then used to produce physical parameters for real, observed spectra. Our neural networks are trained on a set of 155 synthetic spectra, generated using the spectrum program written by Gray (Gray & Corbally 1994, Gray & Arlt 1996). Once trained, the neural network is used to yield Teff for over 5000 B–K spectra extracted from a set of photographic …

Critical Issues For Understanding Particle Acceleration In Impulsive Solar Flares, James A. Miller, Peter J. Cargill, A. Gordon Emslie, Gordon D. Holman, Brian R. Dennis, Ted N. La Rosa, Robert M. Winglee, Stephen G. Benka, S. Tsuneta

Faculty Articles

This paper, a review of the present status of existing models for particle acceleration during impulsive solar flares, was inspired by a week-long workshop held in the Fall of 1993 at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Recent observations from Yohkoh and the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and a reanalysis of older observations from the Solar Maximum Mission, have led to important new results concerning the location, timing, and efficiency of particle acceleration in flares. These are summarized in the first part of the review. Particle acceleration processes are then discussed, with;particular emphasis on new developments in stochastic acceleration by magnetohydrodynamic …

Simulations Of The Atlantic Ocean With A Free Surface Sigma Coordinate Ocean Model, Tal Ezer, George L. Mellor Jul 1997

Simulations Of The Atlantic Ocean With A Free Surface Sigma Coordinate Ocean Model, Tal Ezer, George L. Mellor

CCPO Publications

A sigma coordinate, free surface numerical model with turbulence dynamics has been implemented for the Atlantic Ocean and the Greenland Sea, from 80°S to 80°N. It is driven at the surface by monthly mean sea surface temperature and wind stress climatologies and is executed for 30 years. This is the first time that a model of this type, previously used mostly for coastal and regional simulations, has been implemented for the entire Atlantic Ocean and run for a long period of time. The model horizontal circulation, thermohaline overturning circulation, and meridional heat fluxes are described; the results are compared with …

Small Angle Neutron Scattering From Nanodroplet Aerosols, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Janice L. Cheung, Gerald Wilemski, Reinhard Strey Jul 1997

Small Angle Neutron Scattering From Nanodroplet Aerosols, Barbara Ellen Wyslouzil, Janice L. Cheung, Gerald Wilemski, Reinhard Strey

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report the first measurements of small angle neutron scattering from an aerosol. The aerosol was produced by expanding a D2O-N2 vapor mixture in a supersonic Laval nozzle. The neutron wavelength (0.5 nm) is less than the typical particle size, and we can therefore derive the average particle size (5-8 nm), number density (~1012 cm-3), and polydispersity of the size distribution directly from the experimental data rather than by inferring them from complex models of particle formation and growth. We also predict and observe a Doppler shift-induced anisotropy in the scattering pattern due to …

Specification And Verification Of Generic Cell Rate Algorithms In Pvs, Huseyin Ozgungor Jul 1997

Specification And Verification Of Generic Cell Rate Algorithms In Pvs, Huseyin Ozgungor

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Formal verification methods have been considered as a powerful complementary approach to define standards and to prove correctness of the systems. In this work, formal specification of Generic Cell Rate Algorithms are defined and proved. The specification process enables standardization for constructing Generic Cell Rate Algorithms. Standardization is an important process in the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. By employing formal methods, the necessary standards could be constructed to allow different algorithms to be employed which still meet system requirements. Those system requirements are quantified in the Quality of Service (QOS).

Congestion management is a vital concept for networks in …

Calculation Of Heavy Ion Inactivation And Mutation Rates In Radial Dose Model Of Track Structure, Francis A. Cucinotta, John W. Wilson, Mark R. Shavers, Robert Katz Jul 1997

Calculation Of Heavy Ion Inactivation And Mutation Rates In Radial Dose Model Of Track Structure, Francis A. Cucinotta, John W. Wilson, Mark R. Shavers, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

In the track structure model, the inactivation cross section is found by summing an inactivation probability over all impact parameters from the ion to the sensitive sites within the cell nucleus. The inactivation probability is evaluated by using the dose response of the system to gamma rays and the radial dose of the ions and may be equal to unity at small impact parameters. We apply the track structure model to recent data with heavy ion beams irradiating biological samples of E. Coli, Bacillus Subtilis spores, and Chinese hamster (V79) cells. Heavy ions have observed cross sections for inactivation that …
