New, coordinated measurements from the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) constellation of spacecraft are presented to show the causes and effects of recurrent geomagnetic activity during recent solar minimum conditions. It is found using WIND and POLAR data that even for modest geomagnetic storms, relativistic electron fluxes are strongly and rapidly enhanced within the outer radiation zone of the Earth's magnetosphere. Solar wind data are utilized to identify the drivers of magnetospheric acceleration processes. Yohkoh solar soft X-ray data are also used to identify the solar coronal holes that produce the high-speed solar wind streams which, in turn, cause the recurrent …

Hybrid Probabilistic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, V. S. Subrahmanian Jul 1997

Hybrid Probabilistic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, V. S. Subrahmanian

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The precise probability of a compound event (e.g. e1 V e2, e1 Ʌ e2) depends upon the known relationships (e.g. independence, mutual exclusion, ignorance of any relationship, etc.) between the primitive events that constitute the compound event. To date, most research on probabilistic logic programming [20, 24, 25, 26] has assumed that we are ignorant of the relationship between primitive events. Likewise, most research in AI (e.g. Bayesian approaches) has assumed that primitive events are independent. In this paper, we propose a hybrid probabilistic logic programming language in which the user can explicitly associate, …

Resonance Feature In Al- Photodetachment Below The Al(3S24S 2S) Threshold, B.J. Davies, C.W. Ingram, D.J. Larson, Chien-Nan Liu, Anthony F. Starace Jul 1997

Resonance Feature In Al- Photodetachment Below The Al(3S24S 2S) Threshold, B.J. Davies, C.W. Ingram, D.J. Larson, Chien-Nan Liu, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Photodetachment of Al-(3s23p23 3P) near the threshold of the first excited state of neutral aluminum has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. A 19-keV mass-resolved Al- beam was intersected by a frequency-doubled neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet pumped dye-laser beam, and the fast atoms created by detachment processes were detected. Measurements just below the threshold of the first excited state, Al(3s24s2S), find a large resonance peak in the detachment signal. An eigenchannel R-matrix calculation generates a resonance structure that is qualitatively similar to the data and identifies the large resonance …

Catches Of Humpback And Other Whales From Shore Stations At Moss Landing And Trinidad, California, 1919-1926, Phillip Clapham, Stephen Leatherwood, Isidore Szczepaniak, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Logbook data from California shore whaling stations at Moss Landing (1919-1922 and 1924) and Trinidad (1920 and 1922-1926) are analyzed. The logs for the two stations record the taking of 2,111 whales, including 1,871 humpbacks, 177 fin whales, 26 sei whales, 3 blue whales, 12 sperm whales, 7 gray whales, 1 right whale, 1 Baird’s beaked whale, and 13 whales of unspecified type (probably humpbacks). Most whales were taken from spring to autumn, but catches were made in all months of some years. The sex ratios of humpback, fin, and sei whales (the three species with sufficient sample sizes to …

Effects Of Spatial Resolution And Landscape Structure On Land Cover Characterization, Wenli Yang Jul 1997

Effects Of Spatial Resolution And Landscape Structure On Land Cover Characterization, Wenli Yang

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation addressed problems in scaling, problems that are among the main challenges in remote sensing. The principal objective of the research was to investigate the effects of changing spatial scale on the representation of land cover. A second objective was to determine the relationship between such effects, characteristics of landscape structure and scaling procedures. Four research issues related to spatial scaling were examined. They included: 1) the upscaling of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI); 2) the effects of spatial scale on indices of landscape structure; 3) the representation of land cover databases at different spatial scales; and 4) the …

Idealwise Algebraic Independence For Elements Of The Completion Of A Local Domain, William Heinzer, Christel Rotthaus, Sylvia Wiegand Jul 1997

Idealwise Algebraic Independence For Elements Of The Completion Of A Local Domain, William Heinzer, Christel Rotthaus, Sylvia Wiegand

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Over the past forty years many examples in commutative algebra have been constructed using the following principle: Let k be a field, let S k[xl Xn]x,xn) be a localized polynomial ring over k, and let a be an ideal in the completion S of S such that the associated prims of a are in the generic formal fiber of S; that is, p N S (0) for each p Ass(S/a):. Then S embeds in S/a, the fraction field Q(S) of S embeds in the fraction ring of S/a, and for certain choices of a, the intersection D Q(S) f3 (S/a) …

Parity violation has been observed in a number of previously unreported neutron resonances in silver. Analysis of these parity violation data requires improved neutron resonance spectroscopy. The neutron total cross section for natural silver was measured for En=10–800 eV with the time-of-flight method at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center. The neutron capture reaction was studied with both a natural silver target and a highly enriched sample (98.29%) of 107Ag. A total of 38 previously unreported resonances were observed. The combination of the two measurements allowed assignment of the newly observed resonances to 107Ag or to …

Monte Carlo Study Of The Square-Lattice Annealed Ising Model On Percolating Clusters, P. D. Scholten, Miron Kaufman

Physics Faculty Publications

Simulations of an Ising q-state Pods model which is equivalent to the Ising model on annealed percolation clusters are used to determine the phase diagram of the model in two dimensions. Three topologically different phase diagrams are obtained: (i) for q=2, there are two critical Ising lines meeting at T=0 at the four-state Potts critical point; (ii) for 24, the Ising:critical line intersects a Line of first-order transitions at a critical end point.

Activation In The Comptel Double-Scattering Gamma-Ray Telescope, D Morris, Mark L. Mcconnell, James M. Ryan, R Diehl, U Oberlack, V Schonfelder, M Varendorff, G Weidenspointer, H Deboer, K Bennett

Space Science Center

Abstract-The COMPTEL gamma-ray telescope has been operating in low Earth orbit for six years, since the launch of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory in April 1991. Comparisons of data for different orbits and epochs show evidence of activation on time scales from minutes (27Mg, q,2=9.5 min) to years C2Na, q&.58 yr). The activation is correlated with both the orbital altitude and solar cosmic-ray modulation. Because it requires coincident measurements in two different detectors, COMPTEL is most susceptible to instrumental background events in which two or more photons are produced simultaneously.

SONTRAC will measure 20-250 MeV neutrons from solar flares using scintillator fibers viewed by CCD cameras to track neutron-proton scatters. SONTRAC can also be used to track gamma rays above 20 MeV. Veto shields are used to reject all charged particles. Gamma-ray and neutron events have very different track densities, allowing discrimination between the two. Double neutron-proton scatters allow unambiguous determination of the incident neutron energy and direction. Therefore, SONTRAC is capable of rejecting almost all background except neutrons from the solar direction. SONTRAC would have detected the June 15, 1991 flare with 42σ for 20-100 MeV neutrons, having an …

High Resolution Oi (630 Nm) Image Measurements Of Fregion Depletion Drifts During The Guara Campaign, Michael J. Taylor, J. Labelle, J. A.H. Sobral

All Physics Faculty Publications

A high performance, all‐sky, imaging system has provided data on the evolution and drift motions of F‐region depletions above the magnetic dip equator at Alcântara, Brazil, (2.3°S, 44.5°W). Monochromatic images of depletions in the OI(630 nm) nightglow were recorded on eight nights during 1‐16 October, 1994, as part of the Guará campaign. The drift motions of the depletions were typically 80–100 m/s eastward prior to local midnight and reduced to a minimum of ∼30–50 m/s in the morning hours, in accord with previous observations. However, on October 2–3 and 12–13 the depletions were observed to reverse direction for ∼60–90 min, …

Metastable States In Classical And Quantum Systems, Mark Makela, Samantha Parmley, Roger Yu Jul 1997

Metastable States In Classical And Quantum Systems, Mark Makela, Samantha Parmley, Roger Yu

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The classical vibrational metastable states in a one-dimensional two-mass system are investigated experimentally and theoretically via the transmission of a coherent wave packet propagating through the system. The Fourier transform of the vibrational signal recorded in between the masses reveals resonant excitations by the coherent wave packet. The time-resolved spectrum indicates that the lifetime of a metastable state of higher frequency is longer than that of lower frequency, which is in contrast with the quantum mechanical double-barrier system. This study, which is easily accessible to physics majors, also demonstrates quantum resonant tunneling in a very simple classical way.
