Experimental And Simulation Study Of Reactive Silver Ink Droplet Evaporation, Weipeng Zhang Oct 2023

Experimental And Simulation Study Of Reactive Silver Ink Droplet Evaporation, Weipeng Zhang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The evaporation of particle-free silver ink droplets on heated substrates directly impacts the morphology of the resultant silver particles and films. In this thesis, COMSOL Multiphysics simulations of the solvent (water-ethylene glycol mixture) droplet evaporation process are used to explain the microflows, mass transfers, and heat distribution responsible for the experimental observations. The reactive ink incorporates fluoro-surfactant FS-31 and poly (acrylamide) (PAM) to suppress the coffee-ring effect that negatively impacts the electrical conductivity. Experiments show that the droplet evaporation process results in varied silver particle morphology, depending on the locations within the droplet, leading to uneven surfaces. Large particles (3 …

Corrosion Related To The Nuclear Waste Containers, Ali Ebrahimzadeh Pilehrood Oct 2023

Corrosion Related To The Nuclear Waste Containers, Ali Ebrahimzadeh Pilehrood

Corrosion Research

The disposal of nuclear waste is a demanding topic, and the existing methods, whether it is temporary storage in spent fuel pools or storage in geological repositories, both face the risk of corrosion-related problems. Any failure in these storage methods can potentially lead to the release of radioactive materials into the environment. To avert such catastrophic scenarios, people in the nuclear industry consistently monitor and maintain these storage facilities endlessly and attempt to improve the plans designed to store nuclear waste. Here, I will examine the nuclear waste management organization (NWMO) plan in Canada. Choosing an appropriate location for the …

Corrosion Case Study On Pipeline, Kangze Ren Oct 2023

Corrosion Case Study On Pipeline, Kangze Ren

Corrosion Research

The Kashagan pipeline leaks were likely caused by sulfur stress corrosion cracking, a combined corrosion mechanism developed by the presence of high pressure, the high level of hydrogen sulfide(the main "ingredient" of sour gas), and poor metallurgical choice. Improper welding and poor metallurgical examination were blamed for causing the leaking issue. The purpose of the current review is to raise the alarm about the inappropriate corrosion management of Kashagan oil production and its societal and environmental consequences.

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis examines current state-of-the-art Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methodologies applicable to breast cancer diagnostics, as well as local model-agnostic XAI methodologies more broadly. It is well known that AI is underutilized in healthcare due to the fact that black box AI methods are largely uninterpretable. The potential for AI to positively affect health care outcomes is massive, and AI adoption by medical practitioners and the community at large will translate to more desirable patient outcomes. The development of XAI is crucial to furthering the integration of AI within healthcare, as it will allow medical practitioners and regulatory bodies to …

Investigating Continual Learning Strategies In Neural Networks, Christopher Tam, Luiz Fernando Capretz Oct 2023

Investigating Continual Learning Strategies In Neural Networks, Christopher Tam, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

This paper explores the role of continual learning strategies when neural networks are confronted with learning tasks sequentially. We analyze the stability-plasticity dilemma with three factors in mind: the type of network architecture used, the continual learning scenario defined and the continual learning strategy implemented. Our results show that complementary learning systems and neural volume significantly contribute towards memory retrieval and consolidation in neural networks. Finally, we demonstrate how regularization strategies such as elastic weight consolidation are more well-suited for larger neural networks whereas rehearsal strategies such as gradient episodic memory are better suited for smaller neural networks.

Study Of Behaviour Change And Impact On Infectious Disease Dynamics By Mathematical Models, Tianyu Cheng Oct 2023

Study Of Behaviour Change And Impact On Infectious Disease Dynamics By Mathematical Models, Tianyu Cheng

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis uses mathematical models to study human behaviour changes' effects on infectious disease transmission dynamics. It centers on two main topics. The first concerns how behaviour response evolves during epidemics and the effects of adaptive precaution behaviour on epidemics. The second topic is how to build general framework models incorporating human behaviour response in epidemiological modelling.

In the first project, based on the fact that a fraction of the epidemiologically susceptible population is actually susceptible due to precautions, we present a novel perspective on understanding the infection force, incorporating human protection behaviours. This view explains many existing infection force …

On The Origins Of Life — Modelling The Initial Stages Of Complex Coacervate Droplet Formation, Yixuan Wu Oct 2023

On The Origins Of Life — Modelling The Initial Stages Of Complex Coacervate Droplet Formation, Yixuan Wu

Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)

Coacervate droplets are considered a plausible model for protocells due to their spontaneous formation and ability to compartmentalize macromolecules such as nucleic acid and peptides. Although experimental studies have observed and synthesized coacervates under different laboratory conditions, little is known about their structure. Here we present atomistic molecular dynamic simulations of the interactions between water and oppositely charged proteins that cluster together in a salt-dependent process. Observing such liquid-liquid phase separation on an atomic level would serve as a model for the initial stages of complex coacervate formation. Molecular Dynamics was used to compute diagnostics of the structure at different …

Short-Term Versus Long-Term Effects Of Nitrogen Addition And Warming On Ecosystem N Dynamics In A Grass-Dominated Temperate Old Field, Benjamin F. A. Souriol Oct 2023

Short-Term Versus Long-Term Effects Of Nitrogen Addition And Warming On Ecosystem N Dynamics In A Grass-Dominated Temperate Old Field, Benjamin F. A. Souriol

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Increased atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition and climate warming are both anticipated to influence the ecosystem N dynamics of northern temperate ecosystems substantially over the next century. Nevertheless, in field experiments with N addition and warming treatments, temporal scale can play an important role in determining the extent of treatment effects on N dynamics, and it is unclear to what extent the results of short-term studies can be extrapolated to responses over longer time scales. I compared the short-term versus long-term effects of N addition and warming on net N mineralization, N leaching, and N retention in a grass-dominated old field. …

In this scenario, the present study aims to explore how software testing professionals (e.g., software testers, test engineers, test analysts, and software QAs) deal with code refactoring to understand the benefits and limitations of this practice in the context of software testing. We followed the guidelines to conduct surveys in software …

Observation And Modelling Of Meter-Class Earth Impacting Asteroids, David L. Clark Sep 2023

Observation And Modelling Of Meter-Class Earth Impacting Asteroids, David L. Clark

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Earth is constantly bombarded by solar system objects of a wide variety of sizes, from micron-sized meteoroid stream and sporadic meteor dust, to meter-sized and larger meteoroids observed as fireballs. Fireball event characteristics directly point to the properties and structure of the parent body from which the meteoroid originated. In-atmosphere fireball data paired with in-space observations bring much context to both observations. This thesis centres on three published papers that grew out of my Masters project to identify precovery in-space images of meteoroids first observed as fireballs.

The first article describes the first successful identification of an in-space image of …

Parameter Estimation For Normally Distributed Grouped Data And Clustering Single-Cell Rna Sequencing Data Via The Expectation-Maximization Algorithm, Zahra Aghahosseinalishirazi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is an iterative algorithm for finding the maximum likelihood estimates in problems involving missing data or latent variables. The EM algorithm can be applied to problems consisting of evidently incomplete data or missingness situations, such as truncated distributions, censored or grouped observations, and also to problems in which the missingness of the data is not natural or evident, such as mixed-effects models, mixture models, log-linear models, and latent variables. In Chapter 2 of this thesis, we apply the EM algorithm to grouped data, a problem in which incomplete data are evident. Nowadays, data confidentiality is of …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Nucleotide Prodrugs Against Sars-Cov-2, Mohammed Attaelmanan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Positive sense RNA (ribonucleic acid) viruses (+ssRNA) are the known causative agents of diseases throughout history. These includes Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), SARS-CoV, and recently SARS-CoV-2. RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), a critical enzyme in the life cycle of the virus, can be targeted by using nucleotide antivirals thus causing inhibition. Novel ribonucleotides antiviral agents that possess nucleobase modifications and a 5′-phosphoramidate prodrug moiety, referred to as a ProTide, have been synthesized. The ribonucleoside analogues were constructed by CuI catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition chemistry (CuAAC), also referred to as ‘click’ chemistry. The synthetic route utilized 5-ethynylpyrimidines and azidoribofuranoses as CuI ‘click’ …

Nonparametric Methods For Analysis And Sizing Of Cluster Randomization Trials With Baseline Measurements, Chengchun Yu Sep 2023

Nonparametric Methods For Analysis And Sizing Of Cluster Randomization Trials With Baseline Measurements, Chengchun Yu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Cluster randomization trials are popular in situations where the intervention needs to be implemented at the cluster level, or logistical, financial and/or ethical reason dictates the choice for randomization at the cluster level, or minimization of contamination is needed. It is very common for cluster trials to take measurements before randomization and again at follow-up, resulting in a clustered pretest-posttest design. For continuous outcomes, the cluster-adjusted analysis of covariance approach can be used to adjust for accidental bias and improve efficiency. However, a direct application of this method is nonsensical if the measures are incompatible with an interval scale, yet …

Electrospray Ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is widely used for probing proteins, yet many aspects of this technique remain elusive. Using MS, ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, this thesis sheds light on the stability differences of proteins in the gas phase and solution. After a general introduction (Chapter 1), Chapter 2 scrutinizes some aspects of native ESI. Our data highlight the significance of cone voltage in maintaining a native-like fold and show the advantage of using NH4Ac in protein experiments. Chapter 3 focuses on hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX)-MS. Several studies have reported that D2O …

Interplay Of Forces In Impinging Jet Flow And Circular Hydraulic Jump, Abdelkader Baayoun Sep 2023

Interplay Of Forces In Impinging Jet Flow And Circular Hydraulic Jump, Abdelkader Baayoun

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The circular liquid jet impingement with subsequent hydraulic jump formation is studied theoretically using boundary-layer and thin-film approaches. Three different scenarios are tackled, namely, an accelerated Newtonian jet impinging on a stationary disk, a steady Newtonian jet impinging on a rotating disk, and a steady viscoelastic liquid jet impinging on a stationary disk. Accordingly, the effects of jet acceleration, gravity, centrifugal forces, and fluid elasticity on the flow behaviour and the jump are examined. The results are validated against numerical simulation and existing measurements. The findings show that the thickness of the boundary layer developing near impingement diminishes with jet …

Modelling Long-Term Security Returns, Xinghan Zhu Aug 2023

Modelling Long-Term Security Returns, Xinghan Zhu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This research focuses on the concerns of Canadian investors regarding portfolio diversification and preparedness for unexpected risks in retirement planning. It models market crashes and two main financial instruments as independent components to simulate clients’ portfolios. Initially exploring single distributions on mutual funds such as Laplace and t distributions, the research finds limited success. Instead, a normal-Weibull spliced distribution is introduced to model log returns. The Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM) model is employed to predict and evaluate returns on common stocks using the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE), assuming that daily log returns follow a normal distribution. Additionally, the Merton Jump …

Terrestrial Craters As Analogues For Degraded Craters On Titan, Taylor M. Duncan Aug 2023

Terrestrial Craters As Analogues For Degraded Craters On Titan, Taylor M. Duncan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Besides Earth, Titan is the only planetary body in our Solar System to currently have flowing liquid on its surface. Previous works note that dendritic and rectangular stream networks are present on a global scale on Titan, but do not map networks in the vicinity of Titan’s impact craters: Selk and Sinlap. The objective of this work is to understand how stream networks form adjacent to Titan’s impact craters. This information will inform future missions to Titan (i.e., Dragonfly) about the fluvial morphology of streams near their landing site. I conduct an analogue study with the stream networks at three …

Geometry In Spectral Triples: Immersions And Fermionic Fuzzy Geometries, Luuk S. Verhoeven Aug 2023

Geometry In Spectral Triples: Immersions And Fermionic Fuzzy Geometries, Luuk S. Verhoeven

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

We investigate the metric nature of spectral triples in two ways.

Given an oriented Riemannian embedding i:X->Y of codimension 1 we construct a family of unbounded KK-cycles i!(epsilon), each of which represents the shriek class of i in KK-theory. These unbounded KK-cycles are further equipped with connections, allowing for the explicit computation of the products of i! with the spectral triple of Y at the unbounded level. In the limit epsilon to 0 the product of these unbounded KK-cycles with the canonical spectral triple for Y admits an asymptotic expansion. The divergent part of this expansion is known and …
