The applications of the Lambert W function (also known as the W function) to D-dimensional Bose gases are presented. We introduce two sets of families of logarithmic transcendental equations that occur frequently in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics and present their solution in terms of the W function. The low temperature T behavior of free ideal Bose gases is considered in three and four dimensions. It is shown that near condensation in four dimensions, the chemical potential μ and pressure P can be expressed in terms of T through the W function. In this thesis, we study the first three cohomology groups of the quotients of the descending central series of a free pro-p-group. We analyse the Lyndon-Hochschild- Serre spectral sequence up to degree three and develop what we believe is a new technique to compute the third cohomology group. Using Fox-Calculus we express the cocycles of a finite p-group G with coefficients on a certain module M as the kernel of a matrix composed by the derivatives of the relations of a minimal presentation for G. In an extreme binary black hole system, an orbit will increase its angle of inclination (ι) as it evolves in Kerr spacetime. We focus our attention on the behaviour of the Carter constant (Q) for near-polar orbits, and develop an analysis that is independent of and complements radiation-reactionmodels. For a Schwarzschild black hole, the polar orbits represent the abutment between the prograde and retrograde orbits at whichQis at its maximum value for given values of the latus rectum (˜l ) and the eccentricity (e). Part one of this thesis focuses on the synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-a]indoles from nitrones and 1,1-cyclopropanediesters, by way of tetrahydro-1,2-oxazines. A five step synthetic sequence through tetrahydro-1,2-oxazine synthesis, intramolecular Heck reaction, Krapcho dealkoxycarbonylation, reductive N-O bond cleavage, and acid catalyzed transannular alcohol displacement, is developed to access the desired pyrrolo[1,2-a]indoles. Part two of this thesis details the functionalization of indoles by installation of a malonate moiety, by means of copper catalyzed carbenoid reactivity. This thesis is on model selection using information criteria. The information criteria include generalized information criterion and a family of Bayesian information criteria. The properties and improvement of the information criteria are investigated.

We analyze nonasymptotic and asymptotic properties of the information criteria for linear models, probabilistic models, and high dimensional models, respectively. We give probability of selecting a model and compute the probability by Monte Carlo methods. We derive the conditions under which the criteria are consistent, underfitting, or overfitting.

The ability to pattern cell adhesion on flat substrates and in microfluidic channels is important for locating cell near microdetectors in cell based biosensor devices. Cell adhesion can be controlled by patterning a material's wettability, as cells are able to adhere to hydrophilic surface and will generally avoid hydrophobic materials.

A new synthesis of 2-alkoxy-1,1-cyclobutane diesters and their first use in dipolar cycloadditions is reported. Both the formation of the donor-acceptor cyclobutanes and their subsequent annulation with in situ formed imines are catalyzed by Yb(OTf)(3). Cyclobutanes with carbon donor groups give piperidines with high trans stereoselectivity.

Pathways are complex, involve a diverse range of contacts, and are likely to influence delay in treatment. We conducted a systematic review on the nature and determinants of the pathway to care of patients experiencing a first psychotic episode.

This study describes contributions of glacial meltwater to Lake Superior over the last ~11,000 cal BP (calibrated years before 1950 AD). This research has been motivated by a desire to understand whether glacial meltwater discharge via the Great Lakes into the North Atlantic played a role in Holocene cooling events, such as the Younger Dryas. Rhythmites (interpreted as varves), lithological, mineralogical and grain-size variations, and radiocarbon dating were used to establish chronostratigraphic correlation among four sediment cores from Lake Superior (Duluth, Caribou and Ile Parisienne basins, Thunder Bay Trough). The synthesis of siloles with substitution patterns that are continuative toward natural product synthesis are described. Their reactivity in Diels-Alder chemistry was explored through thermal, Lewis acid, and high-pressure reactions. Feminist science criticism has overwhelmingly concerned itself with biological theories on sex and gender difference. Feminist critics (Bleier, Hubbard, Fausto-Sterling, Haraway) have discredited these theories by arguing that gender bias resulted in cognitive distortions and misrepresentation of the subject of inquiry. Feminist philosophers of science (Harding, Longino, and Nelson, among others), elaborated epistemological frameworks to account for these gender biases in science. A new method for the synthesis of 5-azaindole derivatives is reported. A [3+2] dipolar cycloaddition between nitriles and a 3,4-cyclopropanopiperidine followed by SeO(2) oxidation affords the target compounds in moderate to excellent yields. The divergent nature and cost effectiveness of this method makes it very suitable for combinatorial applications in the pharmaceutical industry.
