Superfund And Society Benumbed: An In-Depth Look At Environmental Justice In South Carolina, Sydney A. Hampton
Superfund And Society Benumbed: An In-Depth Look At Environmental Justice In South Carolina, Sydney A. Hampton
Senior Theses
This thesis investigates the relationship between superfund sites in minority communities and their public health through the lens of social vulnerability. Various demographic parameters were used to assess the risk associated with minority communities and exposure to hazardous waste. After investigating the history of the Environmental Justice movement, three superfund sites of interest in South Carolina, and demographic and public health data; each community was analyzed to determine association between exposure to hazardous waste and minority status. Each examined community exhibited characteristics contributing to heightened social vulnerability, potentially causing increased susceptibility to negative health outcomes from exposure to hazardous waste.

Background Saudi Arabian diets are transitioning to more Western dietary patterns that have been associated with higher levels of inflammation. Emerging evidence suggests plant-based diets are related to lower levels of inflammation; however, the definition of plant-based diets varies. Objective The purpose of this study was to identify the extent to which an overall Plant-Based Diet Index (PDI), Healthy-PDI (hPDI), and Unhealthy-PDI (uPDI) vs Energy-Adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index correlate with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level. Design This was a cross-sectional study carried out at King Saud University. Data on dietary intake, anthropometrics, and hs-CRP were collected. Participants/setting Female students aged …

Axionlike particles (ALPs) are predicted in many extensions of the standard model, and their masses can naturally be well below the electroweak scale. In the presence of couplings to electroweak bosons, these particles could be emitted in flavor-changing B meson decays. We report herein a search for an ALP, a, in the reaction B ±→K ± a, a →γ γ using data collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. No significant signal is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the ALP coupling to electroweak bosons are derived as a function of ALP mass, improving current …
Mechanistic Understanding Of Catalytic Processes For Sustainable Chemical Transformations, Pooja J. Ayare
Mechanistic Understanding Of Catalytic Processes For Sustainable Chemical Transformations, Pooja J. Ayare
Theses and Dissertations
The current field of catalysis is notably advanced in terms of both conceptual and technical innovation. There is a constant need to design new catalysts and develop catalytic processes to improve the scope, efficiency, and selectivity of various chemical transformations. It is also imperative to design catalytic systems which are effective, truly-recyclable and energy efficient for a sustainable future. This can be done through comprehensive knowledge and understanding of catalyst behavior, reaction kinetics and process designing.
For most industrial processes, the preferred catalysts are heterogeneous because these solid catalysts can be easily separated from the final product. However, they often …
Sustainable Polymers: Upcycling Poly(Vinyl Chloride) And Mimicking Low Density Polyethylene, Ian Baxter
Sustainable Polymers: Upcycling Poly(Vinyl Chloride) And Mimicking Low Density Polyethylene, Ian Baxter
Theses and Dissertations
In this research, increasing the sustainability of polymers was investigated through two main methods. The upcycling of poly(vinyl chloride) and the creation of polymer mimics to create degradable low-density polyethylene. In the first chapter, an overview of the sustainability issues of polymers is presented and approaches are described on how their sustainability may be increased through the upcycling of polymers or the synthesis of degradable polymers that mimic the properties of petrol-based polymers.
Chapter 2 contains the progress on the upcycling of PVC using high oleic soybean oil. Soybean oil can soften PVC making it less brittle than pure PVC. …
Covering Systems And The Minimum Modulus Problem, Maria Claire Cummings
Covering Systems And The Minimum Modulus Problem, Maria Claire Cummings
Theses and Dissertations
A covering system or a covering is a set of linear congruences such that every integer satisfies at least one of these congruences. In 1950, Erdős posed a problem regarding the existence of a finite covering with distinct moduli and an arbitrarily large minimum modulus. This remained unanswered until 2015 when Robert Hough proved an explicit bound of 1016 for the minimum modulus of any such covering. In this thesis, we examine the use of covering systems in number theory results, expand upon the proof of the existence of an upper bound on the minimum modulus in the case of …

Synthesis Of Carborane Pincer Complexes And Exploration Of The Reactivity Of Metal-Boron Bonds, Hindurangalage Don Asela Chathumal Jayaweera
Theses and Dissertations
Exploration of transition metal complexes with metal-boron bonds for the cooperative bond activation of small molecules in catalysis is one of the recent developments in novel synthetic strategies. The use of boron clusters as a modular platform for the formation of metal-boron bond has been successfully utilized by our and other groups. Carboranes are icosahedral boron-carbon molecular clusters that have gained attraction as multifunctional ligands due to their unique geometry, electronic properties, and versatility of functionalization methods. Their 3-D structure exerts a steric bulk around the exohedral substituent, either metal or non-metal center. Furthermore, due to the cluster geometry, five …
Well–Defined Donor–Acceptor Materials, Gabrielle A. Leith
Well–Defined Donor–Acceptor Materials, Gabrielle A. Leith
Theses and Dissertations
The modularity of multivariant scaffolds such as covalent–organic frameworks (COFs) provides an unprecedented level of control in the alignment of donor (D) and acceptor (A) units, a demand that is driven by the production of optoelectronic, photonic, and spintronic devices. The foray into novel motifs bearing D-A ensembles in frameworks has been applied towards material property modulation for device performance enhancement. This dissertation presents an emerging trend in the development of D-A interfaces by highlighting recent advances probing D-A interactions in porous crystalline matrices and co-crystals, with a focus on energy transfer (ET) and charge transfer (CT) processes in pre-designed …
A Comparison Of Inference Methods In High-Dimensional Linear Regression, Imtiaz Ebna Mannan
A Comparison Of Inference Methods In High-Dimensional Linear Regression, Imtiaz Ebna Mannan
Theses and Dissertations
Building confidence/credible intervals for the high-dimensional (p >> n) linear models have been the subject of exploration for many years. In this paper, we explore three specific setups. First, we look at the Bayesian paradigm for the LASSO model. A double-exponential prior has been applied to the regression coefficient and from that, a posterior distribution is derived to get the necessary quantiles to calculate the credible intervals for the regression coefficients. Second, we explore the de-sparsified LASSO estimates, and using its asymptotic normality, we calculate the confidence intervals for the model coefficients. Finally, we incorporate an adaptive LASSO model. To …
Photophysics And Electronic Properties Of Photochromic Metal-Organic Frameworks, Corey R. Martin
Photophysics And Electronic Properties Of Photochromic Metal-Organic Frameworks, Corey R. Martin
Theses and Dissertations
Modulation of materials properties through light-based illumination has the capability to expand the technology sector due to stimuli-responsive dynamic behavior that cannot be achieved in traditional materials. For example, reversibly tuning photophysical profiles of such materials allows for switching between discrete states that is a key aspect for the developing logic gates, spatially- and temporally-resolved sensors, and on-demand drug delivery systems. My efforts have focused on employment of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a versatile platform for the material development which contain photochromic moieties allowing for tailoring their electronic properties. Our group has expanded this direction to include heterometallic and actinide-containing …
The Existence And Quantum Approximation Of Optimal Pure State Ensembles, Ryan Thomas Mcgaha
The Existence And Quantum Approximation Of Optimal Pure State Ensembles, Ryan Thomas Mcgaha
Theses and Dissertations
In this manuscript we study entanglement measures defined via the convex roof construction. In the first chapter we build the notion of an entanglement measure from the ground up and discuss various issues that arise when trying to measure the amount of entanglement present in an arbitrary density operator. Through this introduction we will motivate the use of the convex roof construction. In the second chapter we will show that the infimum in the convex roof construction is achieved for a specific set of entanglement measures and provide canonical examples of such measures. We also describe LOCC operations via a …
Concurrent Identification, Characterization, And Reconstruction Of Protein Structure And Mixed-Mode Dynamics From Rdc Data Using Redcraft, Hanin Rafiq Omar
Concurrent Identification, Characterization, And Reconstruction Of Protein Structure And Mixed-Mode Dynamics From Rdc Data Using Redcraft, Hanin Rafiq Omar
Theses and Dissertations
A complete understanding of the structure-function relationship of proteins requires an analysis of their dynamic behaviors and the static structure. However, all current approaches to studying dynamics in proteins have their shortcomings. A conceptually attractive and alternative approach simultaneously characterizes a protein's structure and its intrinsic dynamics. Ideally, such an approach could solely rely on RDC data-carrying both structural and dynamical information. The major bottleneck in utilizing RDC data in recent years has been attributed to a lack of RDC analysis tools capable of extracting the pertinent information embedded within this complex data source.
Here we present a comprehensive strategy …
Graph Neural Network And Phylogenetic Tree Construction, Gaofeng Pan
Graph Neural Network And Phylogenetic Tree Construction, Gaofeng Pan
Theses and Dissertations
Deep Learning had been widely used in computational biology research in past few years. A great amount of deep learning methods were proposed to solve bioinformatics problems, such as gene function prediction, protein interaction classification, drug effects analysis, and so on; most of these methods yield better solutions than traditional computing methods. However, few methods were proposed to solve problems encountered in evolutionary biology research. In this dissertation, two neural network learning methods are proposed to solve the problems of genome location prediction and median genome generation encountered in phylogenetic tree construction; the ability of neural network learning models on …
Automata-Theoretic Approaches To Planning In Robotics: Combinatorial Filter Minimization, Planning To Chronicle, Temporal Logic Planning With Soft Specifications, And Sensor Selection For Detecting Deviations From A Planned Itinerary, Hazhar Rahmani
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we present a collection of new planning algorithms that enable robots to achieve complex goals, beyond simple point-to-point path planning, using automata-theoretic methods, and we consider the filter minimization (FM) problem and a variant of it, filter partitioning minimization (FPM) problem, which aims to minimize combinatorial filters, used for filtering and automata-theoretic planning in systems with discrete sensor data. We introduce a new variant of bisimulation, compatibility, and using this notion we identify several classes of filters for which FM or FPM is solvable in polynomial time, and propose several integer linear programming (ILP) formulations …
Quantifying The Controls Of Shear-Coupled P-Waves, Jackson Saftner
Quantifying The Controls Of Shear-Coupled P-Waves, Jackson Saftner
Theses and Dissertations
Shear-coupled P-waves have been shown to possess great utility in resolving crustal and upper mantle models, however these phases remain largely untapped due to their ephemeral nature. Shear-coupled P-waves are a type of seismic phase that undergo S-to-P conversion either at the free-surface or at the base of the crust. Under the proper conditions, it is possible for the converted crustal P phases to achieve total internal reflection, allowing these phases to remain large in amplitude and sample long segments of the crust. In this study, we use a combination of real-world observations collected from literature, and synthetic seismograms, to …
Tangled Up In Tanglegrams, Drew Joseph Scalzo
Tangled Up In Tanglegrams, Drew Joseph Scalzo
Theses and Dissertations
Tanglegrams are graphs consisting of two rooted binary plane trees with the same number of leaves and a perfect matching between the two leaf sets. A Tanglegram drawing is a special way of drawing a Tanglegram; and a Tanglegram is called planar if it has a drawing such that the matching edges do not cross. In this thesis, we will discuss various results related to the construction and planarity of Tanglegrams, as well as demonstrate how to construct all the Tanglegrams of size 4 by looking at two types of rooted binary trees - Caterpillar and Complete Binary Trees. After …
Modification Of Active Sites In Catalytic Materials For Gas-Phase Heterogeneous Catalysis, Deependra Man Shakya
Modification Of Active Sites In Catalytic Materials For Gas-Phase Heterogeneous Catalysis, Deependra Man Shakya
Theses and Dissertations
Heterogeneous catalysis remains at the core of chemical manufacturing industries with 80-90 % of chemical processes relying on the use of catalysts. Unlike homogeneous catalyst that has extremely well-defined active sites, active sites in heterogeneous catalysis are complex and show dynamic behavior under reaction conditions, and change their structures, composition, particle size. The complexity associated with these systems has made the rational design of the catalyst a difficult problem. Highly crystalline metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) as heterogeneous catalysts present the unique opportunity to systematically modify the geometries, ensemble sizes, and compositions of highly dispersed active sites due to their tailorable, and …

Results On Select Combinatorial Problems With An Extremal Nature, Stephen Smith
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is split into three sections, each containing new results on a particular combinatorial problem. In the first section, we consider the set of 3-connected quadrangulations on n vertices and the set of 5-connected triangulations on n vertices. In each case, we find the minimum Wiener index of any graph in the given class, and identify graphs that obtain this minimum value. Moreover, we prove that these graphs are unique up to isomorphism.
In the second section, we work with structures emerging from the biological sciences called tanglegrams. In particular, our work pertains to an invariant of tanglegrams called …

Predicting Lower Body Soft Tissue Injuries In American Football With Gps Data, Nicholas Tice
Theses and Dissertations
It is of utmost importance to sports organizations that they keep their players as healthy as possible and contributing to the success of the team. Advancements in technology and investments by sports clubs have allowed researchers to better understand the role of load management in high-level athletes to mitigate injury risk. Through GPS tracking data provided by a collaborating Division I American college football team, we seek to predict lower body soft tissue injuries in future training sessions and reduce the number of potentially avoidable injuries within the organization. The difficulty of analyzing the injury data set is that the …
Tailored Nanomaterials For Advancing Fast-Charge Research, Wessel Van Den Bergh
Tailored Nanomaterials For Advancing Fast-Charge Research, Wessel Van Den Bergh
Theses and Dissertations
The demand for fast, energy-dense storage has driven research into nanoscale intercalation materials. Nanoscale materials not only accelerate kinetics but also can modify reaction path thermodynamics, intercalant solubility, and diffusivity. Pioneering works have revealed such nanoscale changes, often without the need to separately probe each fundamental transport process. While electrodes can be designed to have one transport processes dominant, there remain opportunities to better understand energy-dense designs with multiple concomitant transport constraints. The contents herein highlight emerging an method using tailored, energy-dense nanomaterials and the process of elimination to clearly correlate architectural features to performance. For example, this method revealed …
Adsorption Of Microcystins To Sediment Affects Their Bioavailability And Remediation, Ashley Womer
Adsorption Of Microcystins To Sediment Affects Their Bioavailability And Remediation, Ashley Womer
Theses and Dissertations
The freshwater harmful algae Microcystis spp produces a family of toxins called microcystins1. These species of algae are known to release microcystins from their cells directly into the surrounding water2. This creates an array of human health risks depending on the fate and transport of the toxins in the water column3,4. Risk modelling and previous literature has shown that sediment is a sink for free microcystin, microcystin can be stably adsorbed to sediment for hundreds of years, and its adsorption to sediment is determined by the sediment adsorption partitioning coefficient (Kd)5,6,7. In this work it is hypothesized that the sediment …

On Providing Efficient Real-Time Solutions To Motion Planning Problems Of High Complexity, Marios Xanthidis
Theses and Dissertations
The holy grail of robotics is producing robotic systems capable of efficiently executing all the tasks that are hard, or even impossible, for humans. Humans, undoubtedly, from both a hardware and software perspective, are extremely complex systems capable of executing many complicated tasks. Thus, the complexity of many state-of-the-art robotic systems is also expected to progressively increase, with the goal to match or even surpass human abilities. Recent developments have emphasized mostly hardware, providing highly complex robots with exceptional capabilities. On the other hand, they have illustrated that one important bottleneck of realizing such systems as a common reality is …
Deep Learning Based Generative Materials Design, Yong Zhao
Deep Learning Based Generative Materials Design, Yong Zhao
Theses and Dissertations
Discovery of novel functional materials is playing an increasingly important role in many key industries such as lithium batteries for electric vehicles and cell phones. However experimental tinkering of existing materials or Density Functional Theory (DFT) based screening of known crystal structures, two of the major current materials design approaches, are both severely constrained by the limited scale (around 250,000 in ICSD database) and diversity of existing materials and the lack of a sufficient number of materials with annotated properties. How to generate a large number of physically feasible, stable, and synthesizable crystal materials and build accurate property prediction models …

Introduction
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent consequence of combat with significant associated morbidity. Available treatments for PTSD have had limitations, suggesting a need to explore alternative or adjuvant treatments. Numerous rationales for bright light treatment of PTSD include its benefits for common PTSD comorbidities of depression, anxiety, and circadian misalignment and its relative ease of use with few side effects. The primary aims of this research were to examine the effects of bright light treatment for combat-related PTSD and associated morbidity. Materials and Methods
A randomized controlled trial was performed in N = 69 veterans with PTSD attributable …
A Comparative Study Of Two Nickel-Based Suzuki-Miyaura Hybrid Molecular Catalysts, Mollie Morrow
A Comparative Study Of Two Nickel-Based Suzuki-Miyaura Hybrid Molecular Catalysts, Mollie Morrow
Senior Theses
Two molecular nickel-based catalysts, (2,2’bipyridine-4,4’-carboxylic acid)nickel(II) chloride and (2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-diamidopropylsilatrane)nickel(II) chloride, were synthesized and subsequently attached to a solid support in the form of amorphous silicon dioxide to create two hybrid molecular/heterogeneous catalysts. Characterization using ICP-MS and ATR-FTIR confirms that both catalysts are bonded to the SiO2 support. The catalysts were both able to catalyze a Suzuki-Miyarua cross-coupling which their molecular counterparts were unable to; the carboxylate catalyst was able to achieve yields of 10% and the silatrane catalyst achieved yields of up to 50%. Post-reaction analysis indicated that while some catalyst desorption occurred in both complexes, active catalytic species …
Destruction Is A Must-See: Coastal Heritage Site Erosion And Public Perception Of Climate Change, Haley Borowy
Destruction Is A Must-See: Coastal Heritage Site Erosion And Public Perception Of Climate Change, Haley Borowy
Senior Theses
Archaeological sites in South Carolina are vanishing. As sea level rise, and therefore coastal erosion, worsen, more sites will disappear. The questions of how erosion at these sites is measured and how the public perceives the effects of climate change have been studied separately, but not together. Here, the intersection of these is discussed, alongside how sites are portrayed affects how the public perceives them, and therefore their importance. Studies on measuring coastal erosion, local news reports, government documents, and public perception of coastal management and sea level rise illuminate how people eventually decide what is worth saving.

Historic over-exploitation and the more recent threats caused by fisheries by-catch, disease and climate change have left sea turtle populations in the Wider Caribbean at risk of extinction. In 1995, following regional declines in nesting and foraging populations, the island of Anguilla implemented a moratorium on the hunting of turtles. At the request of the Government of Anguilla for scientific data to either support or remove the moratorium, comprehensive population estimates were obtained, and foraging, nesting and migratory movements were examined. In addition, community perspectives on turtles and their protection were assessed. Between 2015 and 18 surveys of 30 nesting …
Possible Studies On Generalized Parton Distributions And Gravitational Form Factors In Neutrino Reactions, Shunzo Kumano, Roberto Petti
Possible Studies On Generalized Parton Distributions And Gravitational Form Factors In Neutrino Reactions, Shunzo Kumano, Roberto Petti
Faculty Publications
Spacelike and timelike generalized parton distributions (GPDs) have been investigated in charged-lepton scattering and electron-positron collisions via deeply virtual Compton scattering and two-photon processes, respectively. Furthermore, we expect that hadron-accelerator-facility measurements will be performed in future. The GPDs will play a crucial role in clarifying the origins of hadron spins and masses in terms of quarks and gluons. It is also possible to probe internal pressure within hadrons for understanding their stability. Gravitational form factors of hadrons used to be considered as a purely academic subject because gravitational interactions are too weak to be measured in microscopic systems. However, due …

Background Higher levels of time spent sitting (sedentary behavior) contribute to adverse health outcomes, including earlier death. This effect may be modified by other lifestyle factors. We examined the association of television viewing (TV), a common leisure-time sedentary behavior, with all-cause mortality, and whether this is modified by body mass index (BMI), physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake, soft drink consumption, or diet-associated inflammation. Methods Using data from participants in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study, flexible parametric survival models assessed the time-dependent association of self-reported TV time (three categories: < 2 h/day, 2-3 h/day, > 3 h/day) with all-cause mortality. Interaction terms were fitted to test whether …
