Because present data on free energy of formation and solubility product constants of the metal sulfides are both inconsistent and based on very old experimental data, a new study using modern techniques is amply justified. Because metal sulfide precipitates are often colloidal and becasue the solubility of these sulfides is so low, ordinary physical and analytical methods are not applicable to a direct determination fo the solubility product constant. Therefore, a more reliable thermodynamic approach was undertaken in this study. A long term research program into the chemistry of quinoxalines has been instituted at Brigham Young University. The literature of quinoxaline chemistry was reviewed and assembled in one paper. Methods of preparation of 2,3-dimethyl- and 2- methylquinoxaline were studied and improved. The bromination of 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline using N-bromosuccinimide was accomplished and an anil addition using quinoxaline and phenyllithium was achieved. Efforts to prepare vinylquinoxalines were unsuccessful. In order to pursue an investigation into the numerous reactions of the 1,4 addition type, a method of preparations of vinyl-quinoxalines must be achieved. The problem consists of measuring accurately the free energy of formation, heat of formation, entropy, and solubility product constant of silver and mercury sulfides, and is a part of a larger study extending to many other metal sulfides. The confusion now existing in the chemical literature amply justifies a study of this nature. The thermodynamic properties of several important metal sulfides have never been measured, and the only values available for them are estimates. Determinations of the properties of many other metal sulfides have been carried out, but the results given by different authors often differ widely.

Studies were made (1) to determine the effect of air and oxygen and verying concentrations in distilled water, on the solubility of iron pyrites; (2) to determine the effect of acid, base and buffer solutions of varying pH; (3) to observe the effect of some oxidizing and reducing agents on the solubility of iron pyrites. These investigations would aid in deciding the possibilities of using iron pyrites as a soil conditioner.

Separation of natural hydrocarbon minerals into their constituents non-destructively is a very difficult problem. A non-destructive analysis of the hydrocarbon minerals is essential to their wise utilization. Chromatography represents a non-destructive means of separating adsorbable substances non-destructively with a high degree of purity. The chromatographic separation is based upon the simple principle of the difference in adsorption affinity of compounds for a particular adsorbent. Although many compounds have been prepared which contain the heterocyclic nucleus known as the quinoxaline nucleus, very little fundamental experimentation has been reported by way of expanding the chemistry of quinoxaline beyond the basic condensation reaction and its valuable use as a means of characterization, for example, the reaction of vicinal diketones with o-phenylenediamine. Also, no know effort has been made to assemble the chemistry of the quinoxalines into one paper for ready reference. The object of this investigation was to determine whether or not a certain sample of raw resin, collected by Mr. Adriaan Nagelvoort from coal from Huntington Canyon, Emery County, Utah, could be separated into more than one fraction with each fraction having distinctly different properties. Three methods of separation were attempted: (l) Separation of specific gravity fractions, (2) separation by use of solvents, and (3) chromatographic separation. Properties determined as a means of establishing any differences in the resins were: solubility, softening points, acid numbers, and iodine numbers.

Clay minerals have widespread application in industry and play an important role in plant life (2, 17). It is the adsorptive capacity of clay which determines largely its importance to man (2). The purpose of this investigation is to interpret the mechanism of adsorption of the phosphate anion by the two clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite. This particular system was singled out for two reasons: 1. It has agricultural significance. 2. It is believed that if the particular phosphate adsorption mechanism is understood it will aid in an understanding of many other adsorption phenomena associated with clay.

The carbethoxylation product of p-aminoacetophenone with diethyl carbonate by means of sodium amide has been proved to be ethyl p-acetylphenylcarbamate instead of ethyl p-aminobenzoylacetate. Thus the amino group was shown to be more active than the methyl ketonic. group tow ard carbethoxylation. Attempt at further carbethoxylation of this carbamate were unsuccessful.

A summary of the literature on the nutritional value of iodine in the diet of various forms of life is given. The majority of evidence indicates that iodine is an essential element in plant and animal nutrition. It functions particularly in animal metabolism in the form of thyroxine. The occurrence of iodine in a nature has been briefly discussed. Investigations made in this regard indicate iodine to be almost universally distributed in very minute amounts. This investigation was carried out for general chemistry classes in which recitation and laboratory work are closely integrated and in which very close supervision is given to laboratory classes. Results indicate that there are fewer failures under these conditions if students do individual work. Students receiving grades of over 80% seem to work just as effectively in pairs as they do when working individually, but about 5% who fail when working in pairs could, apparently obtain grades above 60% if they did individual work. The present investigation was carried out to show the catalytic effect of some iron and cobalt salts on the oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions by free oxygen. The rate of reaction was determined by measuring the volume of water required to replace the absorbed oxygen. A photograph and diagrammatical arrangement of the apparatus is given, (Page 14). From the preliminary experiments it was found that the rate of oxidation of sodium sulfite solutions is dependent upon concentration, and speed of the shaker.
