The aim of this study was the determination of vitamin losses and sensorial quality in the liquid and traditionally smoked canned mussel. Liquid and traditionally smoked black mussels were sterilized at 120 ± 1 °C F_0 5.2 ± 0.1 min in three different sauces (tomato puree sauce, curry sauce and oil sauce). Thiamin losses in liquid and traditionally smoked canned mussels were determined. No significant change was determined in riboflavin levels in the smoked canned mussel. The Effect Of Age, Sex, Housing System And Pregnancy On Some Blood Parameters Of Tuj Sheep, Ömer Bozdoğan, Meti̇n Çenesi̇z, Mehmet Kaya, Nadi̇de Nabi̇l Kami̇loğlu

In this study some blood parameters and the effects of age, sex, housing system and pregnancy of Tuj sheep that have been bred in the Kars region of Turkey were researched and compared. The various blood parameters including the amount of haemoglobin, haematocrit value, erythrocyte and leukocyte count, and the differential percentage of white blood cells were determined from blood taken intravenously. The haemoglobin and erythrocyte values were found to be significantly (p < 0.05) higher in 5-7-month-old Tuj sheep grazing in an open field than in 2-3-month-old male Tuj sheep feeding in a closed system. The erythrocyte count was found to be higher in 2-3-month-old female Tuj sheep in comparison to males. The haemoglobin, leukocyte and haematocrit values were also higher in this group of animals, though this was not statistically significant. The erythrocyte, leukocyte, haemoglobin, haematocrit values and differential percentage of white blood cells were not different in 5-7-month-old male and female Tuj sheep grazing in an open area. The erythrocyte number decreased after parturition in respect to the oestrus and pregnancy period. This decrease was statistically significant. The erythrocyte values were 10.2 x 10^6 /mm^3 before oestrus, 9.5 x 10^6 /mm3 during pregnancy and 8.2 x 10^6 /mm^3 after parturition. The haemoglobin value decreased significantly (p < 0.05) during pregnancy. The leukocyte number was found to be less during pregnancy in comparison to other periods; it was 7.7 ± 1.9 x 10^3 /mm^3 during pregnancy, 9.3 ± 1.9 x 10^3 /mm^3 before oestrus, and 9.7 ± 2.5 x 10^3 /mm^3 after parturation. The lymphocyte percentage increased significantly (p < 0.05) during the pregnancy period.

Physical Properties Of Down Fiber Obtained From Hair X Angora (B_1) Crossbred Goats, Zeynep Erdoğan, Gürsel Dellal, Feryal Söylemezoğlu, Ali̇ Murat Tatar

In this research some physical characteristics of down fibers obtained from hair x Angora (B_1) crossbred goat were examined. The diameter of fiber, natural length, real length and number of crimps of the down fibers were 20.08±0.50 µ, 3.77±0.17 cm, 6.22±0.23 cm and 9.79±0.34, respectively. In addition the strongest color determined in this research were white (63.93%) and light brown (18.03%). According to the diameter of fiber, the down fibers of hair goats induded cashmere (55.33%) cashgora (24.03%) and mohair (20.64%).

Effects Of Cadmium On Uterine Contractions In Different Species In Vitro, Haki̇ Kara, Kadi̇r Servi̇, Yaşar Akar

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of cadmium on oxytocin-induced myometrium contractions in rats, cows and cats in vitro. The frequency was 12.20 ± 1.2, 11.25 ± 2.7 and 10.70 ± 2.5/10 min, respectively, after 0.01 mM oxytocin induced with myometrial samples in rats, cows and cats. The peak amplitude was 3.84 ± 0.50, 3.44 ± 0.65 and 3.35 ± 0.45 g, respectively, after oxytocin induction. The frequency and peak amplitude decreased after the addition of 0.01 mM cadmium chloride (CdCl_2). The frequency was 1.2 ± 0.4 (p < 0.001), 2.5 ± 0.5 (p < 0.001) and 2.0 ± 0.6(p < 0.001), respectively, and the peak amplitude was 0.7 ± 0.3 (p < 0.001), 1.2 ± 0.2 (p < 0.001) and 0.8 ± 0.4 g (p < 0.001), respectively, in rat, cow and cat myometrium. Finally, the myometrium contractions were completely inhibited in the three species. In conclusion, the effects of cadmium may inhibit both calcium channels and the intracellular-induced mechanism.

In our study, malondialdehyde, antioxidant vitamins, antioxidant substances and some hematologic-biochemical parameter levels in nephrotoxicosis were investigated. Six dogs were used in the study. Blood samples taken before the experiment were used as the control. Blood samples were taken on days 2, 5, 7 and 10 during the experiment. During analysis, we found that the statistical changes were not significant in the retinol and Vitamin C levels of the experiment group when compared to those of the control group. \beta-carotene (P < 0.05) and Vitamin E (P < 0.001) levels were significantly decreased. Increases in the levels of malondialdehyde, seruloplasmin and urine \gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) enzyme were P < 0.001, while decreases in the amounts of glutathione were P < 0.001. We also found that changes in erythrocyte and hemotocrit levels were not significant. On the other hand, increases in the levels of leucocyte (P < 0.01), creatinin and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) P < 0.001 were significant. In conclusion, oxidative damage can occur in cells in nephrotoxicosis, the use of antioxidants could be of benefit during treatment with chemotherapeutics.

Sixteen dogs with suspected colitis and ulcerative colitis were examined by clinical, radiographic, laboratory and electrocardiographic means from a diagnostic perspective. In the history and clinical examination, mild diarrheic feces mixed with uncoagulated blood and mucus were determined in all dogs. Tenesmus after defecation, mild weight loss and anemia were common observations. Abdominal palpation revealed a palpable thickened large intestine. Biochemical analyses of blood serums showed that potassium levels were increased, and sodium and total protein levels were decreased. The Effect Of Grower Diet Energy Level On The Performance And Some Slaughtering Characteristics Of Sex-Separated And Mixed-Sex Broilers, Veysel Ayhan, Mehmet Bozkurt

This study examined 936 Ross-308 sex-separated broilers (468 males and 468 females) at 22 days of age. The chicks were fed with standard broiler starter diet for the first 21 days. Isonitrogenic grower diets (3045 versus 3222 kcal/kg M.E.) were offered to broilers housed in sex-separated and mixed-sex pens from days 22 to 43 during the experimental period. The final body weight of sex-separated chicks (1739.91 g) was greater than that of mixed-sex chicks (1714.81 g) at 43 days of age (P < 0.05). Neither growing method nor diet energy level had a significant effect on the body weight (except at 43 days of age) or body weight gain of broilers. However, effects of sex was significant (P < 0.01) on the body weight and body weight gain of broilers throughout the trial period. Sex-separated males were heavier than mixed-sex males at 36 and 43 days of age (P < 0.05). However, the diet energy level and growing method had no significant effect on feed consumption or the feed conversion rate (P > 0.05). The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of Mallophaga species on wild partridges in the Elazığ region. We inspected 68 partridges for Mallophaga species between November and January from 1996 to 2000. At least one species of Mallophaga was found on 48 partridges. Three species of Mallophaga were found on infested partridges. These species, were Goniodes dispar (Burmeister, 1838), Goniocotes pusillus (Nitzch in Giebel, 1866) and Menacanthus lyali (Rodriguez Caabeiro et al.,1983). These three Mallophaga species have not been reported before in Turkey.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of rations containing 0, 30, 60 and 90 ppm Yucca schidigera extract on egg production, feed intake, feed efficiency, egg quality and some blood parameters of quail. Two hundred and forty, eight-week-old Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were divided into one control group and three treatment groups of similar mean weight and egg production levels, comprising 60 quail each. To determine the relationship between biochemical parameters and production traits in sheep, 111 of the animals raised in the Bandırma Sheep Research Institute were used as living materials. The blood samples of 31 Hampshire Down x Merino, 33 Dorset Down x Merino, 27 German Black Headed x Merino and 20 Border Leicester x Merino crosses were taken. Transferrin (Tf) and haemoglobin (Hb) types were determined. Some production traits such as greasy fleece weight, staple length, fiber diameter, ondulance and lamb birth weight were estimated. Important correlations between Hb AB and lamb birth weights (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Tf B type and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino and Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) and Tf A type and lamb birth weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) were also determined.

In this study, a total of 120 staphylococci strains, 46 coagulase positive and 74 coagulase negative, isolated from chickens were identified according to the characteristics of their cultural, biochemical and some antibiotic properties. Milk Yield Characteristics Of Karakaş Sheep, Orhan Karaca, Nurhan Akyüz, Seval Andi̇ç, Tufan Altin

Milk yield and composition were determined in a total of 85 Karakaş ewes (Akkaraman breed). The data were collected from Yüzüncü Yıl University, Agriculture Faculty's Practice Farm and a rural farm near the University. Lactation length, average daily milk yield and total milk yield were 155.9 ± 4.3 days, 529.6 ± 31.6 ml and 84.7 ± 5.1 l, respectively. Milk fat, total solid and mineral percentages were 7.09 ± 0.25%, 19.75 ± 0.66% and 0.93 ± 0.03%, respectively. The differences between farms were significant (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01) for lactation length, average daily milk yield, total milk yield and milk fat percentage. The milk yields of ewes reared in rural farms were lower. In addition, the correlations between a number of characteristics were significant (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01).

The aim of this study was to demonstrate normal duplex patterns of extra (aorta abdominalis, vena cava caudalis) and intraparenchymatous (vena porta, vena hepatica, renal interlober and splenic artery) vessels with color-coded duplex ultrasonography in healthy dogs. While the wave form of the intraparenchymatous vessels like the vena cava caudalis and hepatic vein were mainly affected by the pressure conditions of the intrathoracic and intraabdominal pressure changes due to respiration and cardiac pulsations, portal blood flow was not affected. The aim of this research was to establish whether the dietary preferences of perch (Perca fluviatilis L., 1758) change due to age and the seasons. Food items were examined by the Geometric Index of Importance (GII) method. The results obtained from this index were also evaluated in relation to seasonal and age-dependent variables. In this study, 239 perch which had been caught between May 1998 and December 2000 from Derbent Dam Lake with a number of different nets, shockers and tackles were examined. The organisms obtained after analyzing the perch stomach contents patterns were examined by means of the Geometric Index of Importance (GII). As a result, a total of 27 food items (19 of which were plant and eight animal) were found in the stomach contents. The percentage of plant diet was 6% and that of animal diet was 94%.

Some fleece characteristics of Anatolian Merino, White Karaman and their crosses (F_1) with Ile de France ewes were compared to reveal the effects of these crossbreedings. The research material was fleece samples taken from the shoulder, ribs and thigh. Fiber diameter, fiber elasticity and strength and fiber real length were analysed by OFDA, FAFEGRAPH and USTER AL-100, respectively. Staple length and fiber natural length were measured with a ruler and clean wool ratios were calculated with a conditioning oven. The proportion of Turkey's cattle that were from high-gene cattle breeds and their crosses has increased from 0.8% to 60.7% over the last four decades. While the total number of cattle declined by 1.65 million head, total milk and meat production increased by 298% and 428% to 8.91 million and 359,000 tons, respectively. At the same time, milk per cow and meat per head increased by 184% and 144% to 1688 kg and 171 kg, respectively. In this study, the levels of malondialdehyde and activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase, two antioxidant enzymes, and the levels of nitric oxide in sheep infected with Fasciola hepatica were measured. The level of malondialdehyde in plasma and tissue was measured according to the Yagi and Ohkawa methods, respectively. The effect of L-carnitine supplement on the growth performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings was investigated. One group was fed normal commercial grow-out feed (the control group) while the other group was given feed containing 500 mg kg^{-1} L-carnitine. The addition of carnitine (the second group) had a positive effect on growth (7.9% higher than the control group). According to the final results, the carnitine-supplemented group had greater final weights (151.86 ± 27.19 g) than those of the control group (141.80 ± 24.83 g) (P < 0.05). This study was conducted to determine helminth infections in tench (Tinca tinca), caught in Kapulukaya dam lake. The tench were transferred to the laboratory alive or recently dead. Thereafter, they were necropsied. Postmortem examination of the fish revealed that 84% were positive for various helminth species. Asymphylodora tincae (97.6%), Pomphorhynchus laevis (26.1%), metacercariae (15.4%), plerocercoids of Ligula sp. (5.9%) and nematode larvae (2.2%) were detected in infected fish. Urtica dioica L. has become a very important plant, with beneficial effects on human health all over the world. In this study, the possibility of using U. dioica L. as an ingredient in Turkish sucuk was investigated. Turkish sucuk with U. dioica L. was evaluated in terms of its chemical, physical, and sensory attributes. The results showed that the level of U. dioica L. (0%, 1%, 3% and 5%) and ripening period (0, 3, 7, 10 and 14 days) had a significant effect on the moisture, pH, residual nitrite, L* and +a* values of sucuk (p < 0.01). +b* values were affected more by the ripening period (p < 0.01) than by the level of U. dioica L. (p < 0.05). Sensory evaluations showed that the addition of U. dioica L. to sucuk (cooked and uncooked) effected the sensory attributes compared with the control sucuk.

The relationships of udder and teat morphology, parity, and lactation stage with subclinical mastitis were investigated in cows raised in herds registered with the Izmir Holstein Breeders Association. Data from 887 cows in 21 herds were used. The udder and teat morphology of the cows was scored. Detection of subclinical mastitis was performed by a hand-held device measuring the electrical conductivity of the milk. It was found that 55.9% of cows had trough-shaped udders, 25.9% had ball-shaped udders, 11.5% had rear-heavy udders, and 6.7% had pendulous udders. The Effects Of Replacing Fish Oil With Vegetable Oils In Starter Feeds On The Liver Fat Composition Of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax L., 1758), Mustafa Yildiz, Erdal Şener

The effects of replacing fish oil with soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil and olive oil in starter feeds on the vicerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and liver fatty acid composition of the sea bass were studied. Juvenile sea bass (initial weight = 7.58 ± 0.13 g) were fed experimental diets for 75 days. The fish were then killed and liver samples were collected. The lowest total crude fat value (17.61%) was found in the fish fed the fish oil diet. The highest total crude fat value (34.30%) was found in the fish fed the olive oil diet (P < 0.05). Similarly, the fish fed the fish oil diet had the lowest hepatosomatic index value (2.08) and all the fish fed vegetable oils had similarly high hepatosomatic index values (P < 0.05). Likewise, vicerosomatic index values were lowest (9.06%) in the fish fed fish oil and highest in the fish fed soybean and other vegetable oils (P < 0.05). Fatty acid analyses showed that EPA and DHA from n-3 HUFA's in the fish fed the fish oil diet, linolenic acid (18:3n-3) and linoleic acid (18:2n-6) in the fish fed the soybean oil diet and oleic acid (18:1n-9) in the fish fed the olive oil diet were higher than in the fish fed the other diets.

In this study, some biochemical properties of arginase in sheep mammary tissue were examined. Preincubation temperature, preincubation period and pH were determined to be 52 ºC, 12 min and 9.7, respectively. Furthermore, it was found that arginase in sheep mammary tissue was sensitive to different metal ions. It was found that the most effective was Mn^{+2} from among Mn^{+2}, Cu^{+2}, Mg^{+2}, Ba^{+2}, Fe^{+3}, Ag^{+2}, Cr^{+3}, Sn^{+2}, Hg^{+2}, Pb^{+2}, Co^{+2}, Ni^{+2}, Zn^{+2} and Ca^{+2} metal ions. In this research, the effects of some alternative feed additives for antibiotic growth promoters on performance and gut microflora were examined using 500, one-day-old Ross 508 broiler chicks. Commercial corn-soy-based broiler starter and finisher diets were formulated as basal diets for control treatment. Basal diets were supplemented with an antibiotic growth promoter, a probiotic, a prebiotic (mannan oligosaccharide) and a humic-acid-based mixture, respectively.
