The objective of this study was to demonstrate the specific blood velocity parameters called peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV) and the resistive index (RI) in the internal ophthalmic artery (IOA) and the long posterior ciliary artery (LPCA) with color Doppler imaging (CDI) in clinically normal dogs. Eight healthy dogs were used in the study. Color Doppler ultrasonography was performed on both eyes. PSV, EDV and RI measurements were obtained for both eyes. In a 9-month-old male German Shepherd, degenerative arthritis and incongruity of the elbow joint were observed due to premature closure of the distal radial growth plate. An obvious shortening was present in the radius and ulna, when compared to the contralateral leg. Corticotomy was carried out on the radius and an Ilizarov apparatus was applied to the leg by passing Kirschner wires through the proximal and distal fragments of the radius. Liver Antioxidant Systems And Lipid Peroxidation In Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax)Adapted To Fresh Water, Aysel Şahan, Ergül Belge Kurutaş, Suat Di̇kel

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Changes in the antioxidant systems of the liver tissues of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) adapted to low salinity levels (0 ‰) were investigated. Malondialdehyde levels, as a specific indicator of oxidant stress, were determined. The results indicated highly significant differences among the test and control groups (P < 0.05). Some histopathological destruction, liver weight and hepatosomatic index values were determined at high levels and, moreover, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glucose-6phosphate-dehydrogenase and malondialdehyde activities increased, while reducted glutathione levels decreased in comparison with the control group. An increase in the malondialdehyde level was determined to be an indicator of lipid peroxidation.

This study was performed on the blood samples of 7 Brown cows collected during the estrus, metestrus, diestrus and proestrus phases of the estrous cycle. We investigated whether or not there was a difference between these stages of the cycle with regard to hematologic parameters. Mean hematologic parameters determined during the period of the estrous cycles were found to be within the normal range. This study has shown that the erythrocyte count, total leukocyte count, hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin of erythrocyte, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration of erythrocyte and mean corpuscular volume of erythrocyte parameters undergo no changes between the …

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of some factors on litter size fertility and pregnancy period in Morkaraman sheep as well as birth weight and survival rate in Morkaraman, Dorset Down x Morkaraman (F_1) crossbreed lambs. In the present study, 151 Morkaraman sheep of different ages, and 110 purebred and 46 crossbreed (Dorset Down x Morkaraman F_1) lambs were used as the research material. The effect of the genotype and birth weight on pregnancy period were significant (P < 0.01). However, the effects of birth type, sex of the lamb and age of the sheep were not. The effects of birth type, genotype, sex of the lamb and age of the sheep on birth weight were significant (P < 0.01). The effects of genotype, sex of the lamb and age of the sheep on the number of lambs per gestation were not significant. The effects of birth type on the survival rate of the lambs were significant (P < 0.01); on the other hand, the effects of genotype, sex of the lamb and age of the sheep on survival rate were not.

The Estimation Of Phenotypic And Genetic Parameters For Calf Birth Weight And Gestation Length Of Brown Swiss Cows Reared At The Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Şeref İnal, Mehmet Emi̇n Teki̇n, Mehmet Çolak

This study was carried out to estimate the phenotypic and genetic parameters for the gestation length and birth weight of Brown Swiss cattle reared at the Bahri Bağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute. The experimental material consisted of 891 calving records and 666 gestation length records between 1989 and 2000. The least-squares means of birth weight and gestation length were 35.6 kg and 284 days, respectively. Except for the effect of the dam's age on gestation length, all other factors investigated in this study had significant effects on both gestation length and birth weight (P < 0.05-0.001). The estimations of heritability and repeatability for birth weight were 0.10 and 0.15, respectively. Estimated repeatability for gestation length was 0.14.

A study was carried out to determine the effects of yeast based (Biosacc^TM) and mixture of bacteria-mold-yeast based (Protexin^TM) dietary probiotics on live weight, feed consumption, feed efficiency, egg production, egg weight, egg shell weight, and some blood parameters of quails raised under constant heat stress conditions. Acute laminitis is a severely debilitating disease of the laminae of the equine digit; however, the mechanism(s) of pathogenesis have yet to be fully elucidated. In physiologic states, the endothelium synthesizes substances, such as nitric oxide (NO; vasodilator) and endothelin-1 (ET-1; profound vasoconstrictor), which play a crucial role in vasomotor regulation. The overall hypothesis is that the initiating factor in the onset of acute laminitis is a disruption in the balance between NO and ET-1, which leads to digital vasoconstriction and subsequent laminar ischemic necrosis. To study the protective responses of cyathostome-infected ponies, two challenges were performed employing animals with different histories of exposure to these parasites. The hypothesis developed and to be tested in these experiments was that ponies that had longer exposure to cyathostome contaminated pastures would express acquired resistance to infection. The assumption behind this hypothesis was that helminth-naïve ponies infected with cyathostomes would eliminate the infection using only innate immune responses. Whereas previously exposed ponies would eliminate the infection with acquired immune responses, and these would be more effective in ponies with longer exposure to cyathostomes. Inflammation is a component of the innate immune response. However, severe or prolonged inflammation can be detrimental. Dietary n-3 fatty acid supplementation has proven clinical benefits in chronic inflammatory diseases, most likely due to reduced synthesis of inflammatory mediators and inhibition of lymphocyte proliferation and function. The purposes of this study were to characterize alterations in inflammatory mediator production, and lymphocyte proliferation, in dogs fed a diet consisting of 0.65% n-3 fatty acids (DMB) with an n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratio of 3.4:1. Gastrointestinal tract disease is the leading natural cause of death in horses and horses with ischemic intestinal disease have the greatest mortality. We hypothesized there is basal synthesis of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the intestinal tract of healthy horses that is likely involved in regulating vasomotor tone, secretion and motility and that ET-1 synthesis increases with gastrointestinal tract disease, which may be involved in the pathophysiology of these disorders. The current pathogenesis of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is unknown. Elevated endogenous ethanol production by gastrointestinal yeast has been proposed as a possible mechanism for SIDS. To investigate the role of ethanol in SIDS, three studies were undertaken. In the first study, transcutaneous blood gas technology was evaluated for repeated monitoring of arterial blood gases. This study was conducted on sheep and goats to investigate theileriosis and tick infestations around Kayseri between August 1997 and October 1999. During this period a total of 300 small ruminants consisting of 250 sheep and 50 goats were microscopically examined for Theileria species. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of age, sex and season change on electrocardiograms of Van cats. Thirty-eight (male and female) healthy Van cats, 3-15 months old were used. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) and heart radiographs were obtained from cats seperately in summer, autumn, winter and spring. In the present study, bone tumor samples obtained from 18 dogs and 21 cats from various clinics between 1986 and 2000 were clinically and pathologically examined at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara. Most bone tumors examined were from 5-8-year-old dogs (43.75%) and cats (45%). A significant decrease was detected in animals over 8 years old. These tumors were observed in large breeds, mostly in German shepherd (38.4%) and Anatolian shepherd (Kangal) (15.4%) dogs. This study was carried out to determine the normal haematological and biochemical parameters of clinically healthy ostriches 1-3 years old of either sex. Red blood cells, white blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin values (as haematological parameters) and glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, kreatinine, serum enzymes (ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, CK, amilase) (as biochemical parameters) and electrolytes (Ca, P, Mg, Zn, Cu, Na, K, Cl) levels were measured. It was concluded that the values obtained in this study could be used as reference values for ostriches.

In this study, 627 live freshwater mussels collected from the Koçkale and Pertek regions of Keban Dam Lake were examined for the presence of Salmonella spp. Homogenates prepared from the soft tissue of mussels, after pre-enrichment in Rappaport Vasilliadis, were inoculated onto Brilliant Green Phenol Red Lactose agar and Salmonella-Shigella selective media. Biochemical tests and DNA extraction were carried out on isolates suspected of containing Salmonella. From 19 (4.8%) out of 397 mussels collected in the Koçkale region, Salmonella spp. were isolated and identified, but the agent could not be detected in mussels obtained from the Pertek region. Quality changes in common guitarfish fillets vacuum packed and non-vacuum packed in polyethylene material were investigated during 6 months' cold storage at -18 ^oC. Total yield of the common guitar fish was around 65%. pH, TVB-N, crude protein, moisture, crude ash and fat were 6.50-6.82, 19.87-48.62 mg/100 g, 16.63-22.63%, 75.83-79.88%, 1.00-1.65% and 0.2-0.7%, respectively. Sensory analyses of fillets were carried out at 3 month intervals. The sensory analyses were performed by a trained panel and samples were presented to the panel after baking. This study sought to determine the roles and effectiveness of findings obtained from radiographic examinations of lungs in the diagnosis of pulmonary diseases and to place radiographic findings into routine practice in dogs and cats. Fifty-eight dogs and 27 cats of different breeds, sexes and ages suspected of having pulmonary disease were used as the study materials after clinical examination and anamnesis. In this study, the matrix (M) gene of the RBOK vaccine strain of rinderpest (RPV) was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloned into TOPO^R XL cloning vector. In 2000-2001, the frequency of metritis cases due to Klebsiella pneumoniae was investigated in Thoroughbred breeding mares in the Marmara region of Turkey, where most racehorses are reared. In addition, Thoroughbred stallions from the breeding centre in the İzmit district were examined for the presence of K. pneumoniae. Biotypes and capsule types of the isolates were detected, and their antibiotic susceptibilities were determined. This study was carried out to investigate the fertility traits, survival rate and growth characteristics of Karayaka and Bafra (Chios x Karayaka B_1) genotypes. Karayaka and Bafra genotypes are raised in the Black Sea region of Turkey. In the study, fertility results for Karayaka and Bafra were determined to be 92.3 and 93.7% for birth rates, and 1.08 and 1.78 for litter size, respectively. The survival rates of Karayaka and Bafra lambs at weaning (90 days) were 93.6 and 91.9%, respectively.
