A Scanning Electron Microscope Examination Of Pomphorhynchus Laevis, Kader Yildiz, Külti̇ği̇n Çavuşoğlu Jan 2003

A Scanning Electron Microscope Examination Of Pomphorhynchus Laevis, Kader Yildiz, Külti̇ği̇n Çavuşoğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pomphorhynchus laevis is an acanthocephala which lives in the intestines of fish. These acanthocephala are characterised by a cylindrical proboscis, and an extremely long neck with a bulbous anterior expansion. In this study, the surface structures of P. laevis were examined with a scanning electron microscope. On the proboscis of this parasite 18 hook rows, each consisting of 12 hooks, were observed. The anterior hooks were smaller than the posterior hooks of the proboscis. The recurved hooks were within pockets on the proboscis. The presoma structure was porous and there were no pores on the hooks. The metasoma structure was …

Egg Yield And Hatchability Characteristics Of Native Geese In The Kars Region, Cavi̇t Arslan, Mustafa Saatci

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The egg production and incubation traits of native Turkish geese bred in the Kars region were examined in two separate trials. In the first trial, 100 female (70 one-year-old and 30 two-year-old) and 40 (two-year-old) male geese were used. The geese were divided into 20 groups. In each group there were five females and two males. Group feeding was used during the experiment. One-and 2-year-old geese laid 8.10 and 12.25 eggs/year, respectively. Egg weight, feed consumption, fertility rate, and hatching rate of 1- and 2-year-old geese were 128.85 and 148.15 g, 136.38 and 159.83 g/day, 42.54 and 47.25% and 9.38 …

Effect Of Cadmium Accumulation On Total Protein Levels In Tilapia Nilotica, Mustafa Kalay, Cahi̇t Erdem Jan 2003

Effect Of Cadmium Accumulation On Total Protein Levels In Tilapia Nilotica, Mustafa Kalay, Cahi̇t Erdem

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the present study was to determine the accumulation of cadmium in different tissues of Tilapia nilotica and to establish the influence of this accumulation on total protein levels in liver and kidney tissues. At the end of each experimental period; gill, liver and kidney tissues from the animals were dissected and their cadmium accumulation was determined using atomic absorbtion spectrophotometry. Liver and kidney tissues were homogenised to determine total protein levels. The protein contents of the tissue homogenates were determined by the Lowry method. Cadmium accumulation was higher in the gill, liver and kidney tissues. Cadmium primarily …

Effect Of Steam And Acid Treatment On The Feed Value Of Lentil Straw, Hati̇ce Kalkan, Ali̇ Karabulut

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This research was carried out to determine the possibilities of improving the feed value of lentil straw with steam and acid treatment. Lentil straw (Lens culinaris M.) was used as feed material and three 3-year-old, Kıvırcık rams fitted with rumen cannula were used as the animal material. Lentil straw was impregnated with different concentrated H_2SO_4 solutions, and then autoclaved at different periods and temperatures. After these treatments, the nutrient contents and cell wall components of the lentil straw were determined, and rumen degradability characteristics were determined with the nylon bag technique and gas production technique. In conclusion, higher cell wall …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This present study was performed to identify reproductive peculiarities of the silverbelly (Leiognathus klunzingeri) in Yumurtalık Bight. For this purpose, 430 individuals were obtained by monthly sampling between October 1997 and September 1998 and then they were examined. By using the monthly changes in the mean values of the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and Fulton's Condition Factor (K), we found that reproduction period occurred between July and September, length at first maturity was 5.8 cm and 5.5 cm for males and females, respectively, egg diameter was between 0.8 and 1.0 mm and mean annual fecundity was 2789 ± 2109.

The Effect Of Different Rations On Some Rumen Fluid And Blood Parameters In Sheep, Taylan Aksu, Suphi̇ Deni̇z Jan 2003

The Effect Of Different Rations On Some Rumen Fluid And Blood Parameters In Sheep, Taylan Aksu, Suphi̇ Deni̇z

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different combinations of energy (barley and dried molassed sugar beet pulp (DMSBP)) and protein sources (soybean meal (SBM), cotton-seed meal (CSM), SBM-treated with formaldehyde (FTSBM), CSM-treated with formaldehyde (FTCSM), and urea) on some rumen fluid and blood parameters. In this study, four rumen fistulated Morkaraman rams were used. Rumen pH values were around the optimal pH values suggested for rumen fluid (5.2-7.3) at all sampling times. Ruminal NH_3-N concentrations were significantly greater (P < 0.05) in animals fed DMSBP as an energy source compared with animals fed barley as an energy source and were between 10.4 and 32.75 mg/100 ml in all groups. Formaldehyde treatments of protein sources reduced ruminal NH_3-N concentrations in animals fed DSBP as an energy source (P < 0.05). Acetic and propionic acid concentrations were affected by the energy source, although butyric acid concentrations were significantly higher in animals fed groups containing barley than in animals fed groups containing DMSBP. Formaldehyde treatment did not affect propionic acid concentrations, although propionic acid concentrations were generally significantly higher (P < 0.05) in animals fed barley + SBM combinations compared to treatments containing both SBM and CSM combinations (P < 0.05). Serum total protein concentrations were affected by the energy source and these were higher in groups containing DMSBP than in groups containing barley (P < 0.05). However, serum urea-N concentrations were similar among the different diets.

Developing Risk Assessment Maps For Schistosoma Haematobium In Kenya Based On Climate Grids And Remotely Sensed Data, Kelsey Lee Mcnally Jan 2003

Developing Risk Assessment Maps For Schistosoma Haematobium In Kenya Based On Climate Grids And Remotely Sensed Data, Kelsey Lee Mcnally

LSU Master's Theses

It is important to be able to predict the potential spread of water borne diseases when building dams or redirecting rivers. This study was designed to test whether the use of a growing degree day (GDD) climate model and remotely sensed data (RS) within a geographic information system (GIS), could be used to predict both the distribution and severity of Schistosoma haematobium. Growing degree days are defined as the number of degrees centigrade over the minimum temperature required for development. The base temperature and the number of GDD required to complete one generation varies for each species. A monthly climate …

The Effect Of Aging On The Immune Response To Vaccination In The Horse, Daniel H. Fermaglich Jan 2003

The Effect Of Aging On The Immune Response To Vaccination In The Horse, Daniel H. Fermaglich

LSU Master's Theses

Vaccination programs are designed to protect an animal from infection, however, depending upon the age and health of the animal vaccination may not stimulate a protective humoral response. It is possible that, as in the human and mouse models, geriatric equines may be less responsive than their younger counterparts to current vaccination protocols. The purpose of this study was to identify an age related diminution in the primary and secondary immune responses of geriatric horses in response to vaccination. Two groups of horses were sampled. The first group consisted of an open herd of 39 privately owned horses, varying in …
