Microbiological And Chemical Quality And Meat Yield Of Penaeus Semisulcatus De Haan 1884 Caught From The Antalya Region, Abdullah Di̇ler, Şükran Ataş

This study was carried out to determine the microbiological and chemical quality and the meat yields of shrimp (P. semisulcatus) caught from the Antalya region. Twenty shrimp samples were used for microbiological analyses, 36 for chemical quality analyses and 60 for meat yield analyses. According to microbiological findings, the average numbers of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, coliforms, staphylococcus-micrococcus, and V. parahaemolyticus in shrimp meat were 5.8 x 10^4 cfu/g, 1.9 x 10^2 cfu/g, 9.2 x 10^2 cfu/g, and 7.5 x 10^1 cfu/g, respectively. In our study, malondialdehyde, antioxidant vitamins, antioxidant substances and some hematologic-biochemical parameter levels in nephrotoxicosis were investigated. Six dogs were used in the study. Blood samples taken before the experiment were used as the control. Blood samples were taken on days 2, 5, 7 and 10 during the experiment. During analysis, we found that the statistical changes were not significant in the retinol and Vitamin C levels of the experiment group when compared to those of the control group. \beta-carotene (P < 0.05) and Vitamin E (P < 0.001) levels were significantly decreased. Increases in the levels of malondialdehyde, seruloplasmin and urine \gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) enzyme were P < 0.001, while decreases in the amounts of glutathione were P < 0.001. We also found that changes in erythrocyte and hemotocrit levels were not significant. On the other hand, increases in the levels of leucocyte (P < 0.01), creatinin and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) P < 0.001 were significant. In conclusion, oxidative damage can occur in cells in nephrotoxicosis, the use of antioxidants could be of benefit during treatment with chemotherapeutics.

The Presence Of Mallophaga Species On Wild Partridge In The Elazığ District, Nursel Aksin

The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of Mallophaga species on wild partridges in the Elazığ region. We inspected 68 partridges for Mallophaga species between November and January from 1996 to 2000. At least one species of Mallophaga was found on 48 partridges. Three species of Mallophaga were found on infested partridges. These species, were Goniodes dispar (Burmeister, 1838), Goniocotes pusillus (Nitzch in Giebel, 1866) and Menacanthus lyali (Rodriguez Caabeiro et al.,1983). These three Mallophaga species have not been reported before in Turkey.

To determine the relationship between biochemical parameters and production traits in sheep, 111 of the animals raised in the Bandırma Sheep Research Institute were used as living materials. The blood samples of 31 Hampshire Down x Merino, 33 Dorset Down x Merino, 27 German Black Headed x Merino and 20 Border Leicester x Merino crosses were taken. Transferrin (Tf) and haemoglobin (Hb) types were determined. Some production traits such as greasy fleece weight, staple length, fiber diameter, ondulance and lamb birth weight were estimated. Important correlations between Hb AB and lamb birth weights (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Tf B type and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino and Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) and Tf A type and lamb birth weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) were also determined.

In this study, a total of 120 staphylococci strains, 46 coagulase positive and 74 coagulase negative, isolated from chickens were identified according to the characteristics of their cultural, biochemical and some antibiotic properties. The coagulase positive staphylococci consisted of 28 S. aureus, 9 S. delphini, 3 S. intermedius, 2 S. aureus subsp. anaerobicus, 1 S. schleiferi subsp. coagulans, 1 S. hyicus, and 2 unidentified strains. The aim of this study was to demonstrate normal duplex patterns of extra (aorta abdominalis, vena cava caudalis) and intraparenchymatous (vena porta, vena hepatica, renal interlober and splenic artery) vessels with color-coded duplex ultrasonography in healthy dogs. While the wave form of the intraparenchymatous vessels like the vena cava caudalis and hepatic vein were mainly affected by the pressure conditions of the intrathoracic and intraabdominal pressure changes due to respiration and cardiac pulsations, portal blood flow was not affected. The aim of this research was to establish whether the dietary preferences of perch (Perca fluviatilis L., 1758) change due to age and the seasons. Food items were examined by the Geometric Index of Importance (GII) method. The results obtained from this index were also evaluated in relation to seasonal and age-dependent variables. Some fleece characteristics of Anatolian Merino, White Karaman and their crosses (F_1) with Ile de France ewes were compared to reveal the effects of these crossbreedings. The research material was fleece samples taken from the shoulder, ribs and thigh. Fiber diameter, fiber elasticity and strength and fiber real length were analysed by OFDA, FAFEGRAPH and USTER AL-100, respectively. Staple length and fiber natural length were measured with a ruler and clean wool ratios were calculated with a conditioning oven. The proportion of Turkey's cattle that were from high-gene cattle breeds and their crosses has increased from 0.8% to 60.7% over the last four decades. While the total number of cattle declined by 1.65 million head, total milk and meat production increased by 298% and 428% to 8.91 million and 359,000 tons, respectively. At the same time, milk per cow and meat per head increased by 184% and 144% to 1688 kg and 171 kg, respectively. The relationships of udder and teat morphology, parity, and lactation stage with subclinical mastitis were investigated in cows raised in herds registered with the Izmir Holstein Breeders Association. Data from 887 cows in 21 herds were used. The udder and teat morphology of the cows was scored. Detection of subclinical mastitis was performed by a hand-held device measuring the electrical conductivity of the milk. It was found that 55.9% of cows had trough-shaped udders, 25.9% had ball-shaped udders, 11.5% had rear-heavy udders, and 6.7% had pendulous udders. The Effects Of Replacing Fish Oil With Vegetable Oils In Starter Feeds On The Liver Fat Composition Of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax L., 1758), Mustafa Yildiz, Erdal Şener

The effects of replacing fish oil with soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil and olive oil in starter feeds on the vicerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and liver fatty acid composition of the sea bass were studied. Juvenile sea bass (initial weight = 7.58 ± 0.13 g) were fed experimental diets for 75 days. The fish were then killed and liver samples were collected. The lowest total crude fat value (17.61%) was found in the fish fed the fish oil diet. The highest total crude fat value (34.30%) was found in the fish fed the olive oil diet (P < 0.05). Similarly, the fish fed the fish oil diet had the lowest hepatosomatic index value (2.08) and all the fish fed vegetable oils had similarly high hepatosomatic index values (P < 0.05). Likewise, vicerosomatic index values were lowest (9.06%) in the fish fed fish oil and highest in the fish fed soybean and other vegetable oils (P < 0.05). Fatty acid analyses showed that EPA and DHA from n-3 HUFA's in the fish fed the fish oil diet, linolenic acid (18:3n-3) and linoleic acid (18:2n-6) in the fish fed the soybean oil diet and oleic acid (18:1n-9) in the fish fed the olive oil diet were higher than in the fish fed the other diets.

In this study, the effects of food supplemented with different levels of DL-alanin and L-glutamic acid (1% and 2%) on the growth of sea bass juveniles were investigated. Fish fed with L-glutamic acid (1% of diet) and DL-alanin (1% of diet) supplemented diets had greater weight gains (54.23 ± 1.51 g and 55.03 ± 1.69 g, respectively) than those fed with a control diet (47.59 ± 1.83 g) (p < 0.05). It was found that the groups fed with 1% of attractant-supplemented diets had better food conversion ratios (1.11 and 1.13, respectively) than the control group (1.22) (p < 0.05). It was also found that the wet weight gain and food conversion ratios of the groups fed with 2% L-glutamic acid and DL-alanine were similar to those fed with the control diet and 1% attractant-supplemented diets (p > 0.05).

The aim of this research was to compare the fatty acid composition of egg, sperm and diet of 3-year-old brood stock rainbow trout. The results showed that there were statistically significant (P < 0,01) differences between egg, sperm and diet levels in terms of SFA, MUFA, PUFA (n-3, n-6) and EPA/DHA, which are known as important agents for fish nutrition.

This study was conducted to determine leptospirosis from aborted bovine fetuses. Tissue sections of the liver, lung, spleen and kidney were stained with avidin-biotin peroxidase complex, and antigen localization was examined. These examinations showed positive staining in eight (24.24%) out of 33 fetuses for the presence of leptospira antigens. In these eight cases, leptospira antigens were found in three lung (37.5%), two liver (25%), four kidney (50%) and four spleen (50%) samples. In this study, 705 mosquitofish Gambusia affinis (Baird & Girard, 1853) were caught in Akgöl Lake near the town of Fethiye in Muğla province between November 1998 and October 1999, and the biological characteristics of their growth, reproduction and feeding were studied in detail. Diabetes mellitus was induced in Wistar-Albino type male rats with a single dose of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg intraperitoneally). The kinetic properties of pyruvate kinase were investigated in normal and diabetic rat liver tissue. In normal rat liver tissue, the incubation period of pyruvate kinase was 15 min and the optimum pH was 8. In diabetic rat liver tissue, the incubation period of pyruvate kinase was 10 min and the optimum pH was 7. The aim of this study was to develop ELISA to examine antibodies against rinderpest virus (RPV) for vaccination programmes in the Malatya and Elazığ regions. Serum samples from 180 clinically healthy cattle in Malatya were obtained in the spring of 1995 and 157 serum samples from cattle were taken in the spring of 1996 in Elazığ. In this study, the location and relations of the cranial cervical ganglion were investigated. A total of six sheep of different ages and both sexes were used. The cranial cervical ganlion lies medial to the occipitohyoid muscle, ventral to the jugular foramen, lateral to the longissimus capitis muscle and craniomedial to a common mass constituted by the glossopharyngeal, vagal, accessory and hypoglossal nerves and the condyloid artery. The colour and shape of the ganglion are light brown and fusiform respectively.

The objectives of this study were to compare some haemodynamic and clinical parameters and the analgesic, sedative effects of lidocaine and a lidocaine-meperidine combination for caudal epidural analgesia in mares. This study was performed on 12 thoroughbred mares aged 13-24 years. Time to onset of analgesia in the combination group (6.67 ± 0.42 min) was significantly (P < 0.01) lower than in the lidocaine group (12.17 ± 1.05 min). However, duration of analgesia was significantly (P < 0.001) longer for the combination group (162.67 ± 5.67 min) than for the lidocaine group (109.33 ± 3.29 min). Heart and respiratory rates, rectal temperature, pH, pO_2, pCO_2, HCO_3, BE, PCV, THb and O_2Hb values measured before and after administrations in both groups were not significantly different. In conclusion, the combination of lidocaine-meperidine produced analgesia of quicker onset and longer duration than did lidocaine administered alone for caudal epidural analgesia in mares.

D1, D2 and D3 diets containing 15.5, 12.5 and 9.0 MJ kg^{-1} digestible energy concentrations were offered to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792), and the rates of gastric evacuation and feed intake were determined. Gastric evacuation determinations were achieved by slaughtering eight fish every 6 h until no residue was found in the cardiac stomach. The aim of this study was to estimate the carrying capacity of Kesikköprü Dam Lake, Ankara, where cage farms for the intensive culture of rainbow trout are located. For this purpose Dillon and Rigler's phosphorus budget model was applied in a series of steps and the carrying capacity of the lake was found to be 3335 tonnes per year. This estimated value was about 10 times higher than the present production level of the lake. It seems possible to orientate the fish culture in cages in inland waters by using the phosphorus budget model recommended in this study.

This study is concerned with the feeding behavior of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca (L., 1758)) living in Hirfanlı Dam Lake constructed on the Kızılırmak River. There were 326 pikeperch caught between August 1996 and July 1997. The fork length and weight of the pikeperch caught ranged between 105 and 529 mm and 12 and 1520 g in the general population. Pikeperch are carnivorous and piscivorous and they eat their own species when nutrients are lacking. The smallest fish-swallowing length was determined to be 145 mm.
