Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of urea or urea plus molasses addition into corn harvested at the milk stage on the silage quality and in vitro digestibility of silage. To achieve this objective, four different corn varieties (Rx-947, 33-94, Frassino and Arifiye) harvested at the milk stage were utilized. Silage samples were added 0.5% urea or 0.5% urea plus 4% molasses and ensiled in mini-silos (1 L in volume). Silage samples were analyzed for chemical composition, pH and organic acids (lactic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acids). In vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility …

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of age, sex and season change on electrocardiograms of Van cats. Thirty-eight (male and female) healthy Van cats, 3-15 months old were used. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) and heart radiographs were obtained from cats seperately in summer, autumn, winter and spring. ECGs were recorded as bipolar, augmented unipolar and precordial leads (CV_6LL, CV_6LU, V_10). Durations and amplitudes of waves on the trace were measured in lead II and the electrical axis also measured in leads I and III. Radiographic examination was performed in the right lateral recumbency position (covering the whole thoracic cavity) …

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of maturity on the range quality and weight gain of male and female lambs, and the time at which supplementation is needed. The experiment was conducted at TİGEM Altındere Agricultural experiment station. At the start of the grazing season, four 4-m^2 areas from 3 different (expected to be heavily grazed) locations of range were excluded from grazing with cages. Dry matter (DM) yield and DM loss due to grazing at different periods of the grazing season were determined from these areas. Forage samples were collected from grazed and ungrazed areas …

One hundred and forty-seven hearts (8 humans, 23 dogs, 91 sheep, 25 goats) were investigated in our study. In terms of CT number, while the difference between humans and sheep and goats, and dogs and sheep and goats was significant statistically (p < 0.05), the difference between humans and dogs was less significant than the others. The difference between sheep and goats was not significant statistically (p > 0.05). The number of FCT were not significant (p > 0.05) in the other species while the difference between humans and dogs was significant statistically. The numerical relationship between CT and FCT was positive …

The Presence, Isolation And Characterisation Of Galectin-1 In Bovine Adrenal Gland, Kami̇l Seyrek
The Presence, Isolation And Characterisation Of Galectin-1 In Bovine Adrenal Gland, Kami̇l Seyrek
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The mammalian adrenal gland in the developmental stage provides excellent system for studying the role(s) of lectins in the foetal period because the adrenal gland is composed of two separate endocrine organs which differ in embryologic origin, type of secretion, and function. There is no information on the presence of galectin-1 or galectin-1 reactive glycoconjugates in the development of the bovine adrenal gland. Therefore, the present study focused on this protein. For separation of galectin-1 dialysis, affinity chromatography and SDS-PAGE were used. To monitor the localisation of galectin-1 and its epitopes immunhistochemistry was used. A single 14-kD band comigrated with …

Experimental toxoplasmosis was induced in rabbits using different routes. A total of 42 animals were used; 36 of them were in the experimental groups and the other six comprised the control group. In addition, five guinea pigs were used for preparing hyperimmune sera against Toxoplasma gondii. The Ankara strain was inoculated intravenously (group I, n: 12), intraperitoneally (group II, n: 12) and intradermally (group III, n: 12) into the rabbits. Group IV animals were kept as controls (n: 6). Clinical and macroscopical findings varied according to the routes of inoculation and organs affected. Microscopically, multifocal necrosis with T. gondii tachyzoites …

The purpose of this investigation was to establish whether there were any differences in the lipid and lipoprotein levels of dairy cows with fatty liver. Fifty-four dairy cows with fatty liver and 12 healthy dairy cows were used in the study. The liver fat content was determined in all cows histologically. Cows with fatty liver (n = 54) were grouped according to liver fat content as cows with mild (n = 17), moderate (n = 17) or severe(n = 20) fatty liver. Fat infiltration in the liver was not observed in the healthy group of cows. Some serum chemical parameters …

The effect of melatonin and progestagen sponge administrations separately and together on the reproductive performance at the onset of the breeding season were investigated in Kıvırcık ewes. On June 22, to 40 anoestrous and non-lactating ewes were administrated melatonin (Regulin) implants. On July 14, progestagen (Synchron) sponges were inserted in 20 of these ewes and in 20 other ewes. They were removed 14 days later and on the day of removal the ewes were given 600 I.U. pregnant mare's serum gonadotrophin (PMSG). The other 20 ewes served as controls. Rams were introduced on July 28. The lambing percentages of the …
