The Effect Of Grower Diet Energy Level On The Performance And Some Slaughtering Characteristics Of Sex-Separated And Mixed-Sex Broilers, Veysel Ayhan, Mehmet Bozkurt

This study examined 936 Ross-308 sex-separated broilers (468 males and 468 females) at 22 days of age. The chicks were fed with standard broiler starter diet for the first 21 days. Isonitrogenic grower diets (3045 versus 3222 kcal/kg M.E.) were offered to broilers housed in sex-separated and mixed-sex pens from days 22 to 43 during the experimental period. The final body weight of sex-separated chicks (1739.91 g) was greater than that of mixed-sex chicks (1714.81 g) at 43 days of age (P < 0.05). Neither growing method nor diet energy level had a significant effect on the body weight (except at 43 days of age) or body weight gain of broilers. However, effects of sex was significant (P < 0.01) on the body weight and body weight gain of broilers throughout the trial period. Sex-separated males were heavier than mixed-sex males at 36 and 43 days of age (P < 0.05). However, the diet energy level and growing method had no significant effect on feed consumption or the feed conversion rate (P > 0.05). A group of 111 sheep raised in the Bandırma Sheep Research Institute were used as living materials for this study. Blood samples from 31 Hampshire Down x Merino, 33 Dorset Down x Merino, 27 German Black Headed x Merino and 20 Border Leicester x Merino crosses were taken. Plasma glucose, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and ceruloplasmin levels were determined. At the end of the spawning season, semen was collected without anesthesia by abdominal massage from 37 rainbow trout according to different age groups. In collected semens, color, volume, motility, activity time (duration of motility), concentration, total spermatozoa and pH were recorded. Furthermore, body weight and body length were measured and correlations beetween spermatological properties and these parameters were assessed. The fatty acid compositions of Tilapia rendalli, T. zilli and Oreochromis aurea reared in cages located in Seyhan Dam Lake, O. niloticus reared in freshwater ponds and Tilapia spp. from the Seyhan River were compared. The fatty acid levels of Tilapia spp. from the Seyhan River were significantly higher than those of the other groups (p < 0.05). Total \omega-3 fatty acid values were significantly different for all groups and the highest level were found in Tilapia spp. (p < 0.05). The ratio of \omega-3/ \omega-6 for Tilapia spp., O. aurea, T. rendalli, T. zilli and O. niloticus were 1.95, 1.37, 1.29, 1.21 and 1.12, respectively.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of storage time in cumin paste on the microbiological, chemical and sensorial quality of pastırma, a pastrami-like meat product produced from, the Barbel fish, Barbus esocinus. Three groups of pastırma were produced. The groups were kept in cumin paste for 12, 24 and 48 h, respectively. After production, the pastırma was vacuum packed and stored for 90 d at 20 ^oC. The faeces of 464 horses and 110 donkeys were cOllected and examined by the flotation, sedimentation and Baermenn-Wetzel methods in a parasitology laboratory. The examinations showed that 327 of 464 (70.5%) horses and 85 of 110 (77.3%) donkeys were infected with the following species: in horses, Strongylidae sp. 62.7%, Strongyloides westeri 5.8%, Parascaris equorum 3.2%, Anoplocephalidae sp. 2.4 %, Fasciola hepatica 0.9%, Oxyuris equi 0.6%, and Paranoplocephala mamillana 0.2%; and in donkeys; Strongylidae sp. 72.7%, Strongyloides westeri 13.6%, Parascaris equorum 2.7%, Fasciola hepatica 0.9%, Oxyuris equi 0.9% and Dicrocoelium dendriticum 0.9%.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of transcervical and intravaginal artificial insemination on the pregnancy rate in dogs. Semen was collected by the massage method from dogs brought to our department. Collected semen was examined in the laboratory and stored in liquid nitrogen after dilution with Tris extender. In this research the fatty acid composition of different tissues of mature trout caught from Yeşildere creek in the Fırat region were investigated. In the adipose, gonad, liver and muscle tissues, the differences among the percentages of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3, n-6 PUFA) and the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)/decosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ratio were statistically significant (P < 0.01). However, the differences in the saturated fatty acids (SFA) of tissues were not distinctive. The most important fatty acids were palmitic (16:0), stearic (18:0) and miristic (14:0) in SFA and 18:1 n-9 and 16:1 n-7 in MUFA. The ratio of n3/n6, known as characteristic agents of marine fish, was as high as in marine fish but the differences among the tissues were not significant.

Changes in fatty acid composition were investigated during the early development stages (egg, embryo, alevin and fry) of rainbow trout (Oncorhyncus mykiss). It was found that saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, i.e., 14:0, 16:1n-7 and 18:1n-9, were utilized to a greater extent as energy substrates. Quantities of 18:3n-6, 18:4n-3, 20:2n-6 and 22:5n-3 fatty acids were significantly reduced (P < 0.05) during early development. The most significant depletion was observed in monounsaturated fatty acids, which fell from 33.89% to 23.41% during development while n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids fell from 16% to 12.9%.

Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) was purified from goose erythrocytes and some characteristics of the enzyme were investigated. The purification procedure was composed of 3 steps: hemolysate preparation, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and 2', 5'-ADP Sepharose 4B affinity gel chromatography. Thanks to the 3 consecutive procedures, the enzyme, having a specific activity of 36.2 EU/mg protein, was purified for a yield of 68.79% and 3892 folds; to ascertain enzyme purity, SDS-PAGE was performed. Aflatoxins that are toxic metabolites for human and animals were determined in some fish feed. Eighty-five unit samples taken from "fish farming processes", "feed factories" and "imported feeds" in 1998, 1999 and 2000 were analyzed. In the analysis, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique were used. Consequently, aflatoxin levels above 20 ppb were detected in 20 samples and from 21.2 to 42.4 ppb in 85 samples. In 22 samples aflatoxin levels from 5.0 to 20.0 ppb were detected. This present study was performed to identify reproductive peculiarities of the silverbelly (Leiognathus klunzingeri) in Yumurtalık Bight. For this purpose, 430 individuals were obtained by monthly sampling between October 1997 and September 1998 and then they were examined. By using the monthly changes in the mean values of the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and Fulton's Condition Factor (K), we found that reproduction period occurred between July and September, length at first maturity was 5.8 cm and 5.5 cm for males and females, respectively, egg diameter was between 0.8 and 1.0 mm and mean annual fecundity was 2789 ± 2109.

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious bacterial disease and poses a risk to domestic livestock, wildlife and public health in the United States (U.S). In 1917, the U.S. government began a comprehensive national bovine TB eradication program. The disease has been nearly eradicated from livestock in the U.S., but areas of infection resurface periodically. Michigan was declared free of bovine TB in 1975 and received Disease Free status in 1979. In 1975 a free-ranging white-tailed deer in Alcona County was confirmed to be bovine TB positive. Livestock feed is susceptible to contamination from wildlife excreta during on farm storage. Pathogens associated with diseases such as paratuberculosis, salmonella and cryptosporidiosis are present in wild rodent and bird excreta. Feed stores on four farms in the east of Scotland were monitored monthly over the winter of 1998/9 to quantify the levels of wildlife faecal contamination. A mean of 79.9 rodent (95% confidence interval: 37.5–165.9) and 24.9 (14.3–41.7) bird faeces were deposited per m2 of stored feed per month. It was estimated that individual cattle and sheep could encounter 1,626 and 814 wildlife faeces over the winter.

This project looks at whether high case frequency areas or “hot spots” of bovine tuberculosis (tb) exist in free ranging white-tailed deer in northeastern Michigan, and examines the factors associated with them. Michigan Department of Natural Resources researchers have been collecting deer heads annually since 1996 in the five county area of Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, Oscoda, and Presque Isle as part of an effort to manage an outbreak of bovine tb in the wild white-tailed deer population. Various animal models have been developed to study tuberculosis of both humans and animals. Generally, tuberculosis is transmitted by aerosol and oral routes. Feral swine populations provide both benefits and liabilities to citizens of the United States. Their expanding range and increasing densities, however, have raised concern over the adverse environmental and agricultural effects and the increased risk of disease transmission between feral swine and livestock. We discuss the role of feral swine in the transmission of wildlife diseases and, in particular, in diseases of national significance to the livestock industry. We also discuss available management tools and strategies for reducing feral swine populations, minimizing damage or disease occurrences and eradicating populations when deemed appropriate. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of baker's yeast as a protein source instead of soybean meal in dairy cow diets. Four dairy cows were utilized in a 4 x 4 Latin Square experiment. Diets included 0.0% (Control Diet), 6.6% (Diet 1), 13.2% (Diet 2), and 19.8% (Diet 3) baker's yeast containing 3.56 x 10^8 CFU/g.
