The aim of this study was to further examine the mechanisms of ciprofloxacin resistance in Salmonella enterica isolates from pork and patients. Twenty-four isolates including 18 ciprofloxacin- resistant isolates and six susceptible strains were used. Mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDRs) of gyrA, gyrB, parC and parE were examined. Expression of AcrAB-TolC efflux pump was quantitatively determined using qRT-PCR. While nucleotide modifications were found in gyrA, gyrB and parC, all mutations identified were novel. All 18 ciprofloxacin resistant isolates carried mutations in at least one target gene and all six isolates susceptible to ciprofloxacin did not carry mutations in …

Polysaccharide gel (PG) from the rind of durian (Durio zibethinus Murr.) is a soluble powder that gives good results as an excipient in pharmacological and food preparation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of PG as a feed-supplement diet on body weight gain, immune stimulation, total bacteria and Salmonella in feces, and cholesterol levels in broilers. Eighty, one-day-old broiler chicks were divided into 4 groups. Since Eimeria pachylepyron was firstly described in slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) in 1972, there has not been any reports of the disease throughout the world. An adult male 0.8 kg bw greater slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) had diarrhea, emaciation and dead. Severe necro-hemorrhagic jejunitis with the presence of coccidian protozoa and secondary bacterial septicemia were the causes of death. Endogenous stages of E. pachylepyron were detected exclusively in the jejunal enterocytes especially in the crypt of Lieberkühn. This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of 10% w/v fipronil spot-on for treatment and prevention of Rhipicephalus sanguineus infestations on dogs. Twelve Beagles were randomly separated into two groups which were treatment and control group (6 dogs/group). The treatment group received 10% fipronil spot-on at the dosage of 6.7 mg/kg on day 0. A group of 60 Rhipicephalus sanguineus was released to feed on each dog on day -7, -2, 7, 14, 21, and 28. The ticks were counted and removed on days-4, 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31. Glutamate transporters are responsible for active transport of glutamate over the cell membrane and play an important role in the glutamate-glutamine cycle. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of intracellular glutamine depletion on glutamate uptake mediated by amino acid transport systems; EAATs and X-c in placental choriocarcinoma (BeWo) cells as a model of human trophoblasts. Intracellular glutamine was depleted by culturing the cells in regular medium without glutamine and by treating with an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase (methionine sulfoximine; MSX), for 16 hours. Sequence variability in two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) regions, namely NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 (nad5) and small subunit of ribosomal RNA (rrnS) in Spirometra erinaceieuropaei from dogs in Hunan province in China was examined. A portion of the nad5 (pnad5) and rrnS (prrnS) genes were amplified separately from individual S. erinaceieuropaei by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Representative amplicons were subjected to sequencing in order to estimate sequence variability. The sequences of pnad5 and prrnS were 531 and 328 bp in size, respectively. A wild-captured female monocellate cobra (Naja kaouthia) had abnormal posture and move with difficulty as consequences of swelling at the middle third of the body. The swelling area was firm on palpation with average size of 10x4 cm. The shape of the swelling area was similar to a small bottle which was obviously recognized on the dorsal recumbency. Therefore, the foreign body obstruction in gastrointestinal tract was diagnosed without radiographic examination. Digital manipulation was performed, but could not move the foreign bodies. Susceptibility Of Clostridium Difficile Isolated From Healthy Captive Asian Elephants To Metronidazole And Vancomycin, Nattawooti Sthitmatee, Thanya Warinrak, Waroot Wongkalasin

Susceptibility to metronidazole and vancomycin, drugs of choice for Clostridium difficile infection, of 15 C. difficile isolates from 6 healthy Asian elephants was determined. All of the isolates belonged to only 1 ribotype pattern and carried both toxin A and B genes. The Minimal inhibitory concentration range of metronidazole and vancomycin, drugs of choice for treatment of C. difficile infection, was 0.125-4.0 μg/ml and 0.125-2.0 μg/ml, respectively. Moreover, MIC50 and MIC90 for metronidazole were 0.75 and 1.5 μg/ml while vancomycin was 1.0 and 2.0 μg/ml. There was no evidence of resistance to these antimicrobials. The present study determined the inhibitory effect of tannin from sweet chestnut wood against tilapia Oreochromis niloticus bacterial pathogens, Aeromonas hydrophila (20 isolates) and Streptococcus agalactiae (20 isolates). Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) corresponding to tannin and oxytetracycline (OTC) for A. hydrophila were 18.75-300 μg/ml and 0.125-128 μg/ml; and for S. agalactiae were 600 μg/ml and 0.5-8 μg/ml, respectively. The antibacterial potency of tannin from sweet chestnut wood was found in the test system of pH: 6.5-7.0, suggesting that the inhibitory effect of tannins is unrelated to their acidity property. The aim of the present study was to study the effects of L-cysteine on chilled carp (Cyprinus carpio) semen qualities. Pooled semen samples were prepared from eight fish, and divided into five groups according to the concentrations of L-cysteine as follows: 0 (T1), 0.5 (T2), 1.0 (T3), 1.5 (T4) and 2 (T5) mM. Mutation of the G6S gene in Anglo-Nubian (AN) goat causes non-function of the N-acetylglucosamide 6- sulfatase enzyme within lysosomes, which increases heparin sulfate accumulation and induces pathogenesis of the internal organs. Transversion of base C to T at nucleotide 322 changes decoding of an amino arginine to a stop codon (R322X) and produces a truncated protein. This mutation is detrimental to the health of a goat kid leading to delay in nervous development and death. To study the subchronic and chronic lung effects of low dose of Diesel Exhaust Particles (DEPs), mice were intratracheally instilled with 50 μg of DEPs. Cellular and biochemical parameters in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and histological alteration were determined at 90, 120, 150 and 180 days after instillation. From BALF results, exposure to 50 μg of DEPs did not cause any pulmonary inflammation. However, mild to moderate pulmonary changes evidenced by multifocal DEPs laden alveolar macrophages (AMs) aggregation, type II alveolar cell proliferation, thickening of alveolar wall, interstitial fibrosis and edema were observed in treated mouse lungs. In the present decade, kisspeptin has been a fascinating topic in the reproductive spotlight. Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide, produced mainly in the hypothalamus from Kiss1 gene. This gene was initially discovered in 1996 as a tumor suppressor gene in human malignant melanoma. Then in the year 2003, researchers found that mutations of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPR54), which is the strongly cognate receptor of kisspeptin, were associated with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in mice and humans. The effect of crude extract of wild cape gooseberry, P. minima Linn. on zebra fish, D. rerio, embryo was investigated. Five concentrations (0.01%, 0.1%, 1%, 10% and 20%) of an aqueous crude extract of the plant leaf was prepared and tested with newly spawned embryos in 96 well plates. The observation effect was based on the toxicity endpoint composed of lethal effects, sublethal effects and malformation effects appearing within 144 hours postfertilization (hpf). The present study aimed to identify specific and upregulated proteins in virulent SS2 strain that mightconfer pathogenicity. We performed a comparative proteomic assay to analyze the difference in secretome betweenvirulent SH-08 strain and avirulent SH-YH07 strain. Virulence of tested strains was determined using porcine andzebrafish models. The supernatant from bacterial cultures was collected at early exponential phase (OD600 = 0.4).Proteomic assay identified 52 proteins from the virulent strain supernatant and 29 proteins from the avirulent strainsupernatant. The aim of the study was to elucidate the influence of absence of extra- or intracellular glutamine on the uptake activity of the amino acid transport system A in placental BeWo cells. This study used Pearson correlation test to analyze statistical correlation between shelter canine intake and number of dogs euthanized in municipal animal shelters in 20 counties/cities in Taiwan from 2001 to 2011. Data of animal shelters were official data provided by the Council of Agriculture, the competent authority of the Animal Protection Act in Taiwan. Among the 20 counties/cities in Taiwan, Hualien County, Penghu County, Keelung City, and Chiayi County were excluded from this study due to incomplete data. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an important food-borne zoonotic protozoa. Infection occurs when humans and warm-blooded animals consume raw or lightly cooked cysts containing meat or sporulated oocysts contaminated food. T. gondii infection has been observed in food animals in many countries suggesting the significance of food animals in the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis. However, there is no report regarding T. gondii infection in food animals other than pigs in Taiwan. Morphological Aspects By Light And Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies Of Swamp Buffalo Endometrium At Follicular And Mid-Luteal Phases, Paisan Tienthai, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong

This study was carried out to observe morphological changes of swamp buffalo endometrium at follicularand mid-luteal phases. Uterine horns were collected from female buffaloes at a local abattoir and the selected estrousstages were categorized into the follicular (n = 10) and mid-luteal (n = 10) phases. General histology andhistomorphometry were examined under light microscope (LM) whereas a scanning electron microscope (SEM) wasused to study surface epithelial changes. The results showed that the height of the endometrial epithelium, thenumber of superficial endometrial glands and the number of capillaries were significantly greater (p < 0.05) at thefollicular phase. By SEM examination, the ciliated and secretory cells with different patterns, i.e. abundant microvillion the apical part or secretory protrusion in various degrees, distinctly increased at the follicular phase. In themeantime, numerous secretory cells with stubby microvilli were covered throughout the endometrial surface withsecretory vesicles on endometrial glandular orifices at the mid-luteal phase in which the ciliated cells were sparselyseen. It was concluded that the swamp buffalo endometrium obviously revealed modifications during the estrouscycle for physiological events, i.e. sperm transport, early embryonic development and implantation.

The present study investigated the association among serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), backfatthickness, and age at first observed estrus in replacement gilts. In total, 80 replacement gilt, Landrace (L, n = 48) andYorkshire (Y, n = 32), were included. The gilts were determined for age at first observed estrus between 167 to 212days of age. They were categorized according to age at first observed estrus into ≤ 200 days (n = 41) and > 200 days (n= 36) groups.
