Efficacy Of Ultrasonic Dissection Device In Staphylectomy Surgery In Brachycephalic Airway Obstructive Syndrome (Baos) Dogs, Sunisa Thunyodom, Marissak Kalpravidh, Chanin Kalpravidh, Wijit Banlunara, Pasakorn Brikshavana
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The ultrasonic scalpel instrument was compared with the conventional staphylectomy technique in elongated soft palate surgery in twenty brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome (BAOS) canines. Patients were randomly divided into the conventional incisional and ultrasonic scalpel group. Operation time (minute), bleeding volume (ml), respiratory distress score, postoperative complications score, pain scores, epithelialization score and inflammatory score were assessed. Two weeks after surgery, soft palates tissues were biopsied from 7 conventional surgery dogs and 8 ultrasonic dissection device applied dogs. The operation time and bleeding volume in the conventional surgery group were significantly higher than that in conventional group (P<0.01 and P<0.001, respectively). In addition, the respiratory distress score was significantly higher in the conventional surgery group compared with the ultrasonic dissection device group on day 3 and day 28 post-operation (P<0.05). There were no significantly different postoperative complication scores, pain scores or inflammatory scores between two groups. The epithelialization score of the UD was significantly higher than that of the conventional group (P<0.05). The ultrasonic dissection device is user friendly, has decreased surgical time, complete hemostasis and provides fewer postoperative complications. The ultrasonic dissection device is recommended in high-risk patients such as those displaying senility, chronic inflammation, or bleeding disorders.

Genomic DNA (gDNA) is a prerequisite for genomic research. However, the collection of blood samples from young animals for gDNA extraction is not practical. Since piglet tail docking is routinely performed in pig farms to prevent injury from tail biting, docking tails served as a practical source for gDNA in piglets. An adult male wild-caught king cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, of unknown age was raised in captivity for seven years. The snake showed swelling at the caudal third of the body. Physical examination revealed an approximately 15x10 cm firm mass in coelomic cavity. Radiography showed soft tissue density causing complete obstruction of intestinal tract. The mass was surgically removed and diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. The snake was monitored and the mass recurred two months post-surgery. A second surgical exploration showed severe adhesion of the mass to dorsal aorta, intercostal muscle, ribs and stomach. The snake was euthanized and the recurrent masses were diagnosed …

This cross-sectional study describes the epidemiological data of feline urolithiasis in Thailand. Information on 923 feline uroliths submitted from Thailand to the Minnesota Urolith Center between January 2010 and December 2017 was evaluated. The frequency of urolith types, the relationships between urolith type and breeds and sex, were analyzed. Calcium oxalate was the most common urolith (49.5%) and was commonly found in male cats (OR = 1.81; 95%CI: 1.39, 2.36) with a mean age of 6.3±3.2 years. Arginine metabolism plays a pivotal role in the mammalian reproductive system by controlling various physiological processes of the reproductive organs including follicular development, ovulatory mechanisms and egg production. However little is known about the molecular mechanisms regulating arginine metabolism at early stages of folliculogenesis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a rapid heat-treatment method on Thai QX-like infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and the efficacy on protection from the virus after heat treatment. QX-like IBV isolate THA46 was incubated at 56 oC. The incubated virus was collected every 5 min for up to 1 h and then they were inoculated into embryonated chicken eggs. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of Trypanosoma evansi infection and its associated risk factors in camels in the Jazan region, southwestern Saudi Arabia. A total of 679 blood samples were collected from three local breeds of camel – Awadia, Awarkia and Sawahelle – in 11 randomly selected governorates of Jazan region. Blood samples were screened by Giemsa-stained blood film (GSBF) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. Cardiac progenitors are a promising cell source for treating myocardial infarction. In this study, we improved the protocol for cardiac differentiation of rabbit induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) using Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) inhibitor (Y-27632), low O2 tension (hypoxia) and melatonin treatments. Bovine mastitis has had a great impact on the economic losses of the dairy industry. Nowadays, environmental pathogens cause the main types of bovine mastitis, especially the streptococci. The aim of the study was to identify the major Streptococcus species causing bovine mastitis in Taiwan as well as to reveal their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. The study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of L. intracellularis field isolates from Korean pig farms. The novel four field isolates successfully obtained from clinical cases were prepared in IEC-18 cells to conduct the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC)s; either intracellular (InMIC) or extracellular MICs (ExMIC). The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of the recombinant herpes virus of turkey-Newcastle disease virus (rHVT-NDV) vaccine against Newcastle disease virus (NDV) challenged in 14 days old broiler chickens. One hundred chickens were divided into 5 groups of 20 chickens each. Group 1 chickens received live NDV vaccine via the intra-nasal route. The potential value of bolus tracking contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of oral tumors in dogs was investigated by examining the relationship between contrast-enhanced CT image density and microvascularization. Canine colonic duplication is a rare congenital anomaly, usually symptomatic in the first year of life, with the common signs of bowel obstruction. Most importantly, colonic duplication in an adult dog has not been reported. This case document reports a non-communicating tubular colonic duplication with concurrent retroperitoneal mass in a 3- year-old female crossbred dog, presented for further diagnosis and treatment of the abdominal mass. A 10-year-old female Pomeranian dog was presented to the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Chulalongkorn University, on December, 2018, with a history of anorexia, frequent vomiting, depress and oliguria. Physical examination revealed that the dog was depressed but responsive to the stimuli. The dog was dehydrated (7%) with pale-pink mucous membrane. The capillary refilling time of 1.5 seconds with strong femoral pulse were detected. The frozen goat semen process must wash seminal fluid from goat semen. A small dosage of alpha1 adrenoceptor antagonist or tamsulosin may reduce seminal fluid in goat. A latin square 4x4 was applied to twelve male goats to receive either normal saline (NSS), tamsulosin 3, 6 and 9 µg/kg intramuscular injection at one-week intervals. Kaempferol, myricetin and quercetin are abundant flavonols in edible fruit and vegetables. Much previous data has shown the beneficial effects of these flavonols in cancer treatments. Thus, the cytotoxic effects on rhesus monkey kidney epithelial cells (LLC-MK2) and the anti-proliferative effects on human cervical cancer (HeLa) cells through total ERK protein expression of kaempferol, myricetin and quercetin have been investigated. The cytotoxic assay at 24h revealed the high safety of three flavonols on LLC-MK2 cells. Kaempferol (1-1000 µM) did not have any significant effect on the viability of these normal epithelial cells. Fibrin glue has been widely used for controlling hemorrhage and sealing tissue in surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hemostatic efficacy of sheep-derived fibrin glue. Six Marino sheep were used to collect concentrate fibrinogen preparation by the ammonium sulfate precipitation method. Crossbred pigs (n=6) were used to evaluate hemostatic efficacy by monitoring whole blood clotting time by the glass slide method, bleeding time and bleeding quantity during liver biopsy. Within the last decade, the positive effects of Pueraria mirifica on osteoporosis have been established in rats and monkeys. However, the effect of P. mirifica on bone healing has not been elucidated. In this study, post-menopausal osteoporotic monkeys were subjected to an iliac crest biopsy, divided into two groups (5 animals/group), and fed daily with standard monkey diet alone (PMP0 group) or mixed with 1,000 mg/kg body weight of P. mirifica powder (PMP1000 group) for 16 months.
