Quantifying And Comparing The Head Impact Biomechanics Of Different Player Positions For Canadian University Football, Kody Campbell

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Differences between Canadian and American football could affect the magnitudes of head impacts and risk of concussion to Canadian players. This study sought to quantify and compare the number, magnitude, and location of impacts that Canadian University football players of different positions experienced during games and practice in a season. A kinematic measuring device collected the linear accelerations and rotational velocities of the head from impacts experienced by players competing in practices and games. The impact magnitudes that were experienced in games were significantly larger than in practice. The offensive back position and wide receiver position had significantly larger peak …

Unveiling The 'Olympic Kidnapping Act': Examining Public Policy And Homelessness In The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, Sophy Chan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis examines how the 2010 Olympic Games contributed to the issue of homelessness in Vancouver. Specifically, this thesis: 1) investigates how local and provincial ordinances were exploited by landlords to displace tenants and used to mobilize spaces for Olympic consumption so that unwanted behaviours related to homelessness were criminalized, and 2) documents and analyzes the arguments put forward by advocacy groups that contested what was happening to low-income and homeless residents because of Olympic development. Throughout, I argue that homelessness was exacerbated in the lead-up to the Olympic Games in two ways. First, landlords and building owners who wanted …

This thesis evaluated sensory and vascular effects of exercise, thermal and ultrasound interventions that can be used in the mobilization phase (cast removal) after DRF.

Methods

  • This thesis includes 3 studies. The first study compared responses to Immersion in Cold water Evaluation (ICE) in the DRF and uninjured hands. Skin blood flow (Sbf), skin temperature (temp.) and sensory perception thresholds (sPT) at 2000Hz for A –beta fibres and at 5 Hz for C fibres were obtained before, immediately after ICE and 10 min …

The Effects Of Acute High- And Low-Intensity Exercise On Hsp70 And Hsp90 Accumulation In Rat Skeletal Myofibres And Vasculature, Hana Kowalchuk Aug 2013

The Effects Of Acute High- And Low-Intensity Exercise On Hsp70 And Hsp90 Accumulation In Rat Skeletal Myofibres And Vasculature, Hana Kowalchuk

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Exercise induces cytoprotective stress proteins in blood vessels (BV) and skeletal myofibres. The localization and extent of induction with different exercise intensities is unclear. Rats (n=10 per group) were run at high (HIEX; 30m/min) versus low-intensity exercise (LOEX; 15m/min) for 1hr, sacrificed 24hr later. Sections of the white portion of the vastus were immunofluorescently stained for Hsp70 and Hsp90. It was hypothesized that: 1) a greater abundance of Hsp70 and Hsp90 would be observed in BVs following HIEX, 2) due to earlier recruitment, larger BVs would have a more robust response than small BVs, 3) more myofibres surrounding BVs expressing …

The interviews with youth matched the central tenants of SDT that being: autonomy, relatedness …

Certified Professional Co-Active Coaches: Why They Enjoy Coaching, Courtney Newnham-Kanas, Don Morrow, Jennifer D. Irwin Feb 2012

Certified Professional Co-Active Coaches: Why They Enjoy Coaching, Courtney Newnham-Kanas, Don Morrow, Jennifer D. Irwin

Health Studies Publications

The evidence-base for the practice of coaching continues to flourish, despite the fact that very little is known about the practitioners (i.e. the coaches) themselves. It is of value to understand how coaches perceive their practice. Such information can be utilized to create a common knowledge-base about coaches that can be used, in turn, to track trends and forward research that evaluates coaching services. As the use of Co-Active coaching in facilitating behaviour change continues to rise it becomes important to learn more about Certified-Professional Co-Active Coaches (CPCC). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate what CPCCs enjoy …

Physical Activity Of Remote Indigenous Australian Women: A Postcolonial Analysis Of Lifestyle, Doug Macdonald, Rebecca Abbott, David Jenkins

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

In the context of rising chronic diseases amongst Indigenous peoples, there are calls for the adoption of more healthy “lifestyles.” In this context, this paper explores thoughts about physical activity from 21 Indigenous families through the voices of women and girls living in remote rural communities in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area, Australia. Speaking back to physical activity as a lifestyle “choice,” three consistent themes emerged: shame, gendered positioning, and welfarism. In conclusion, the perspectives of Torres Strait islanders and Northern Peninsula Area communities suggest that there are deeply embedded ways of thinking about the body, familial obligations, …
