Quality Of Care Measures For Migraine: A Comprehensive Review, Joshua J. Gagne, Brian Leas, Jennifer H. Lofland, Neil Goldfarb, Frederick Freitag, Stephen Silberstein

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Migraine headache is a highly prevalent, chronic, episodic disorder that is associated with high direct and indirect costs. Migraine headache impacts not only patients, but also their employers due to substantial decreases in workplace productivity. Despite the prevalence and clinical and economic burdens of migraine, no national efforts to develop and implement standardized measures of quality of care have been made. The objective of this study was to collect and report on existing quality of care measures for migraine that could be suitable for quality measurement at the health-plan level. Published literature, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's National …

Methodological Issues In The Study Of The Effects Of Hemoglobin Variability, Marshall Joffe, Wei Yang, Steve Brunelli, Harold Feldman Jun 2007

Methodological Issues In The Study Of The Effects Of Hemoglobin Variability, Marshall Joffe, Wei Yang, Steve Brunelli, Harold Feldman

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

We consider estimating the effect of hemoglobin variability on mortality in hemodialysis patients. Causal effects can be defined as comparisons of outcomes under different hypothetical interventions. Defining measures of the effect of hemoglobin variability and clinical outcomes is complicated by the fact that hypothetical interventions on variability used to define its effect inevitably involve manipulation of related variables. We propose a model-based definition of the effect of the hemoglobin variability as a parameter for variability in a causal model for the effect of an overall intervention on hemoglobin levels over time. We consider this problem using history-adjusted marginal structural models, …

Session 1 - Rationalizing The Home Front: The Cold War, The Nevada Test Site, And Radiation Exposure, Leisl A. Carr

International Symposium on Technology and Society

Beginning in 1953, radiation exposure and its effects became a hotly contested issue between the government, members of communities surrounding the Nevada Test Site (NTS), and researchers within the national scientific community. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), concerned about maintaining a continental testing facility and aware that atomic testing would impact communities surrounding the NTS, sent representatives to areas potentially affected by fallout to instruct and reassure the affected public. How government officials perceived neighboring communities and how these communities perceived these representatives of the government often determined public responses to the atomic testing program. The story of radiation monitors …

Adherence To Recommendations For Follow-Up To Abnormal Pap Tests, Katherine S. Eggleston, Ann L. Coker, Kathryn J. Luchok, Tamra E. Meyer

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether timely adherence rates differ by race among women with abnormal Pap tests participating in a cost-free or reduced-cost program.

METHODS: Eligible subjects included women aged 47-64 years who received a referral for follow-up care after an abnormal Pap test from 1999 to 2002 in South Carolina (n=330). Adherence was measured as days to receipt of follow-up care after an abnormal Pap test. Cox proportional hazards modeling was used to estimate risk factors associated with time to adherence within 60 and 365 days by race.

RESULTS: African-American and non-Hispanic white women had similar adherence to follow-up. Among …

Should Massachusetts Regionalize Public Health?, Eric W. Hayden Jun 2007

Should Massachusetts Regionalize Public Health?, Eric W. Hayden

Financial Services Forum Publications

Amidst rising global concerns about bioterrorism and pandemic flu preparedness, the delivery capacity and effectiveness of public health service assumes increased importance and relevance. In the United States, the lack of a centralized, national public health system has meant that “public health” is the primary responsibility of state and local governments. Many states have established various types of intrastate regional structures to deliver the range of on-going, occasional, and/or episodic services that characterize the world of public health. However, Massachusetts is not among them. Despite its global reputation as a pre-eminent medical center, the state of Massachusetts has a highly …

Emotional Stroop Effects: Eating Disorders And Obesity, Kristy Anne Kuehfuss Jun 2007

Emotional Stroop Effects: Eating Disorders And Obesity, Kristy Anne Kuehfuss

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study addresses the effects of emotional valence on selective processing of body-shape related words in young women who suffer from anorexia, bulimia, or obesity, and non-clinical controls. Research in the area of emotional Stroop interference has indicated that persons with eating disorders, particularly anorectics, show elevated latencies in naming colors of words related to food or body-shape, in contrast to either neutral words, or to non-clinical control groups. One intriguing issue regarding the emotional Stroop interference among various clinical populations relates to the question of whether the interference is due to the emotionality of the relevant words or to …

Female Patients’ Perspectives On The Stages Of Eating Disorder Recovery, Cherish C. Knoll Jun 2007

Female Patients’ Perspectives On The Stages Of Eating Disorder Recovery, Cherish C. Knoll

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Eating disorders are severe psychiatric disorders that most commonly begin in the female population during adolescence and across ethnicity (Lucas, 2004). However, the face of eating disorders is changing as they become more apparent across cultures and lifespan, impacting both young and aging women as well as males. In the past few decades progress has been made in the diagnostic, treatment, and recovery phases of eating disorders. These gains have contributed to a better understanding of eating disorders, assisting in the decrease of mortality and morbidity rates seen in eating disorder patients. Nevertheless, there are significant challenges that still remain …

The second phase utilized a questionnaire which was developed from the results of the focus group, using the theory of planned behavior. One hundred and thirty-five black African born teenagers between the ages of 15-19 years living in southern California completed the questionnaire. …

A Trade-Off Proposal For Funding Long-Term Care, Yung-Ping Chen Jun 2007

A Trade-Off Proposal For Funding Long-Term Care, Yung-Ping Chen

Gerontology Institute Publications

Long-term care can be a depressing subject. Most of us tend not to think about it. However, we cannot long avoid it as the 76 million baby boomers begin reaching older ages in a few short years. According to projections, in 40 years, those aged 65 to 84 (numbering 31.6 million in 2005) will more than double, and those 85 plus (about 5.1 million in 2005), who are more at risk of dependency, will more than triple (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004 and 2006). Heavy reliance on Medicaid, already the second largest budget item in most states, would not appear viable. …

A Qualitative Study Of Inpatient Rehabilitation Client Perceptions Of The Semi-Fixed Environment, Liane Hewitt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background and Purpose. Literature supports the importance of the environment on promoting or compromising health. However, little is known about how the semi-fixed environment affects client perceptions and recovery from a debilitating condition. The purpose of this study was to investigate beliefs about control within the semi-fixed environment and client perceptions of the rehabilitation process.

Design and Method. This study utilized a basic qualitative research design with 10 rehabilitation clients whose average inpatient length of stay was 14 days. Data were collected in two phases. Phase I included two inpatient visits involving semi-structured interviews on the rehabilitation process and …
