Prevalence Of Depression, Anxiety, And Stress During Covid-19 Pandemic, Ram Lakhan, Amit Agrawal, Manoj Sharma

School of Public Health Faculty Research

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis has greatly affected human lives across the world. Uncertainty and quarantine have been affecting people’s mental health. Estimations of mental health problems are needed immediately for the better planning and management of these concerns at a global level. A rapid scoping review was conducted to get the estimation of mental health problems in the COVID-19 pandemic during the first 7 months. Peer-reviewed, data-based journal articles published in the English language were searched in the PubMed, Medline, and Google Scholar electronic databases from December 2019 to June 2020. Papers that met the inclusion criteria were …

Smoke From Wildfires Can Worsen Covid-19 Risk, Putting Firefighters In Even More Danger, Luke Montrose Sep 2020

Smoke From Wildfires Can Worsen Covid-19 Risk, Putting Firefighters In Even More Danger, Luke Montrose

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two forces of nature are colliding in the western United States, and wildland firefighters are caught in the middle.

Emerging research suggests that the smoke firefighters breathe on the front lines of wildfires is putting them at greater risk from the new coronavirus, with potentially lethal effects.

At the same time, firefighting conditions make precautions such as social distancing and hand-washing difficult, increasing the chance that, once the virus enters a fire camp, it could quickly spread.

As an environmental toxicologist, I have spent the last decade expanding our understanding of how wood smoke exposure impacts human health. Much of …

Artificial Intelligence–Powered Smartphone App To Facilitate Medication Adherence: Protocol For A Human Factors Design Study, Don Roosan, Jay Chok, Mazharul Karim, Anandi V. Law, Andrius Baskys, Angela Hwang, Moom Roosan

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Medication Guides consisting of crucial interactions and side effects are extensive and complex. Due to the exhaustive information, patients do not retain the necessary medication information, which can result in hospitalizations and medication nonadherence. A gap exists in understanding patients’ cognition of managing complex medication information. However, advancements in technology and artificial intelligence (AI) allow us to understand patient cognitive processes to design an app to better provide important medication information to patients.

Objective: Our objective is to improve the design of an innovative AI- and human factor–based interface that supports patients’ medication information comprehension that could potentially …

Innovating The Study Of Context: Using A Qualitative Study On Subjugation And Resistance To Explore The Utility Of Foucauldian Governmentality As A Framework For Enriching Situational Analyses, Hannah Kia, Carol Strike, Daniel Grace, Lori E. Ross Sep 2020

Ross

The Qualitative Report

Situational analysis has, as an emerging poststructuralist approach to grounded theory, recently grown in use across a diverse range of disciplines and substantive areas. In this paper, we consider the complementarity of Foucauldian governmentality as a theoretical framework for supporting and enriching situational analyses. Our work is based on the findings of a recent study, informed by situational analysis, in which we interviewed 27 HIV-positive (n=16) and HIV-negative (n=11) gay men ages 50 and over about their health care experiences, and used these data to examine processes of subjugation and resistance reflected in their accounts. Drawing on our analytical process, …

Preterm Birth Prevention In Appalachian Kentucky: Understanding Barriers And Facilitators Related To Transvaginal Ultrasound Cervical Length Surveillance Among Prenatal Care Providers, Anna Hansen, Mairead E. Moloney, Cynthia Cockerham-Morris, Jing Li, Niraj R. Chavan

Sociology Faculty Publications

Background: Appalachian Kentucky has higher-than-average rates of preterm birth (PTB)—a health disparity associated with increased maternal and fetal/neonatal morbidity and neonatal mortality. Transvaginal ultrasound (TVU) cervical length measurement is the best predictor of PTB risk, but is underutilized in Appalachia. This study explores prenatal care providers' TVU-related knowledge and practices, and identifies barriers and facilitators, which impact the adoption of this evidence-based technology.

Materials and Methods: This study recruited providers from three Appalachian Kentucky health care sites. Prenatal care providers took part in semistructured interviews and completed brief survey scales. Questions focused on PTB knowledge, TVU-related barriers, and suggestions for …

Hiv Viral Suppression Among Hiv Positive Women Of Color In The United States, Amanda J. Nace Sep 2020

Hiv Viral Suppression Among Hiv Positive Women Of Color In The United States, Amanda J. Nace

Dissertations and Theses

Background: As of 2020, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) remains a serious public health problem in the United States (U.S.). There are more than 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) in the U.S. in 2020. While HIV predominately affects men in the U.S., women are less likely to achieve viral suppression than men. Among the women living with HIV, women of color (WOC) have borne a disproportionate burden of the HIV epidemic in the U.S. for decades. A wealth of evidence has demonstrated the importance of viral suppression as a tool for controlling the …

Encoding The Odor Of Cigarette Smoke, Timothy S. Mcclintock, Naazneen Khan, Yelena Alimova, Madeline Aulisio, Dong Y. Han, Patrick Breheny

Physiology Faculty Publications

The encoding of odors is believed to begin as a combinatorial code consisting of distinct patterns of responses from odorant receptors (ORs), trace-amine associated receptors (TAARs), or both. To determine how specific response patterns arise requires detecting patterns in vivo and understanding how the components of an odor, which are nearly always mixtures of odorants, give rise to parts of the pattern. Cigarette smoke, a common and clinically relevant odor consisting of > 400 odorants, evokes responses from 144 ORs and 3 TAARs in freely behaving male and female mice, the first example of in vivo responses of both ORs and …
