Covid-19 And Social Isolation Endangering Psychological Health Of Older Adults: Implications For Telepsychiatry, Kavita Batra, Amanda Elizabeth Morgan, Manoj Sharma
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) has created a public health emergency and had claimed 911,877 lives at the time of writing this manuscript (September 12, 2020). While everybody is at the risk of acquiring infection following the exposure to SARS-CoV-2, older adults are significantly more likely to experience severe illness, life-threatening complications, hospitalizations, and deaths. As the pandemic evolved, social distancing or shielding efforts as primary prevention were instituted to protect the physical health status of the vulnerable population, with no or limited consideration to the psychological health of the older population. Social isolation and loneliness are the long-standing public health concerns …

High Impact Practices—Detecting And Managing Hypertension In The Extended Postnatal Period: Preventing Postnatal Pre-Eclampsia And Eclampsia, Charlotte E. Warren
Reproductive Health
The Population Council developed High Impact Practice (HIP) briefs for three strategies that show promise for improving prevention, detection, and management of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (HDPs). This brief focuses on one of those strategies: detecting and managing hypertension in the extended postnatal period. Key points presented are: the extended postnatal period provides an opportunity to monitor a woman’s blood pressure (BP) and check for persistent hypertension; if BP is measured routinely at any contact with the health system during the extended postnatal period, hypertension is more likely to be detected and managed appropriately; women with pre-eclampsia have a 3.7-fold …

Overview Of High Impact Practices For Improved Prevention, Detection, And Management Of Hypertensive Disorders In Pregnancy, Population Council
Reproductive Health
As part of the Ending Eclampsia Project and supported by the Pre-eclampsia Technical Working Group, the Population Council developed High Impact Practice (HIP) briefs for three strategies that show promise for improving the prevention, detection, and management of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (HDPs). HDPs affect 10 percent of women globally and are major contributors to maternal and newborn mortality, morbidity, and disability. Providing essential services and health education for women at all levels of the health system is necessary to improve survival rates and quality of life for those who experience HDPs and their newborns. Inspired by Family Planning HIPs, …
High Impact Practices—Task Sharing For Hypertensive Disorders In Pregnancy: Improving Early Detection And Management Of Hypertensive Disorders In Pregnancy, Karen Kirk
Reproductive Health
The Population Council developed High Impact Practice (HIP) briefs for three strategies that show promise for improving prevention, detection, and management of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (HDPs). This brief focuses on one of those strategies: task sharing, which is the expansion of the levels of health providers who can appropriately deliver health services. Key points presented in this brief are: optimizing available human resources through task sharing can be an effective strategy to increase access to health services; task sharing key services for the prevention, detection, and management of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy can help prevent maternal and newborn morbidity …
High Impact Practices—Encouraging Empowerment And Self-Care Through Participatory Women’S Groups And Group Antenatal Care: Supporting Women To Be At The Center Of Their Own Care As Active Participants, Tracy Mcclair
Reproductive Health
The Population Council developed High Impact Practice (HIP) briefs for three strategies that show promise for improving prevention, detection, and management of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (HDPs). This brief focuses on one of those strategies: encouraging empowerment and self-care through participatory women’s groups and group antenatal care. Key points presented are: highly participatory, group-based interventions—such as community-based women’s groups and group antenatal and postnatal care (ANC/PNC)—provide opportunities for women to share their experiences and knowledge with others, discuss the local context for challenges and how to address them, and promote empowerment and agency; participation in these groups is associated with …

Availability Of Over-The-Counter Antibiotics In Guatemalan Corner Stores, Purificación Moreno, Alejandro Cerón, Karen Sosa, Marinees Morales, Laura M. Grajeda, Maria Renee Lopez, John P. Mccraken, Celia Cordón-Rosales, Guy H. Palmer, Douglas R. Call, Brooke M. Ramay
Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship
Widespread availability of antibiotics without prescription potentially facilitates overuse and contributes to selection pressure for antimicrobial resistant bacteria. Prior to this study, anecdotal observations in Guatemala identified corner stores as primary antibiotic dispensaries, where people purchase antibiotics without prescriptions. We carried out a cross sectional study to document the number and types of antibiotics available in corner stores, in four study areas in Guatemala. A total of 443 corner stores were surveyed, of which 295 (67%) sold antibiotics. The most commonly available antibiotics were amoxicillin, found in 246/295 (83%) stores, and tetracycline, found in 195/295 (66%) stores. Over the counter …

Wellness In The Helping Professions: Historical Overview, Wellness Models, And Current Trends, Ashley J. Blount, Dalena L. Dillman Taylor, Glenn W. Lambie
Journal of Wellness
Introduction
Wellness and the concept of holism have rich histories throughout the helping professions. However, Westernized medical models often promote the concept of treatment rather than prevention, limiting the helper’s ability to focus on wellness when working with clients/patients. Therefore, in order to support a re-integration to holistic wellness and the prevention of illness, and re-focus on a wellness ideology, we conducted a thorough theoretical overview of wellness in the helping professions to: (a) provide a historical overview of wellness in helping professions, (b) discuss prominent wellness models, (c) review wellness assessments, (d) present wellness supervision models, and (e) offer …

Office of the Provost
National estimates describing the overall prevalence of and disparities in influenza vaccination among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) in United States are not well described. Therefore, we analyzed the prevalence of influenza vaccination among adults with DM, overall and by sociodemographic characteristics, using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey database from 2008 to 2016. Associations between sociodemographic factors and lack of vaccination were examined using adjusted logistic regression. Among adults with DM, 36% lacked influenza vaccination. Independent predictors of lacking influenza vaccination included age 18 to 39 years (odds ratio [OR] 2.54; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.14-3.00), Black race/ethnicity (OR 1.29; …

Community Health Sciences
Background: Anemia is a major public health concern among women of reproductive age leading to high maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. Of the prior studies conducted in Pakistan, most focused on large urban areas and did not explore the determinants of anemia among women of reproductive age (WRA) across socio-demographic, dietary, reproductive, and biological domains. Thus, we aimed to study the prevalence and determinants of anemia among WRA in rural Pakistan.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Thatta district of Pakistan from September 2018 to January 2019 and enrolled 150 non-pregnant, married women. Data collectors administered …
