Grower Perceptions Of Safety Hazards And Associated Injuries Among Farmworkers Involved In Northwest Potato Production, Cynthia Curl, Karin Adams, Rachel Phinney, Matthew Blua

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Potatoes are a vital part of the Pacific Northwest’s agricultural economy. As in many agricultural industries, workers involved in potato production may be at risk for illness and injuries.

Methods: A Hazard Perception Survey (HPS) was completed by 63 potato growers in Washington (n = 26) and Idaho (n = 37) during the fall and winter of 2017–2018. Participants were asked to indicate their level of concern regarding the frequency and severity of injuries associated with various potato production tasks. Descriptive statistical analyses were used to identify operations and tasks that potato growers perceived to be most …

Interplay Between Social Media Use, Sleep Quality, And Mental Health In Youth: A Systematic Review, Rea Alonzo, Junayd Hussain, Saverio Stranges, Kelly K. Anderson

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Publications

Social media applications are increasingly prominent among youth. This systematic review provides a comprehensive assessment of the literature on the relationship between active social media use, sleep quality, and common mental health outcomes (anxiety, depression, and psychological distress) among youth. MEDLINE, PsychINFO, EMBASE and Scopus were searched for observational studies investigating this relationship among youth (aged 16–25). Thirty-six cross-sectional studies and six prospective cohort studies met the inclusion criteria. Among cross-sectional studies, significant associations between excessive social media use with poor mental health outcomes (n = 33), poor sleep quality (n = 24), and significant associations between poor sleep quality …

Quality Of Diabetes Care In Blended Fee-For-Service And Blended Capitation Payment Systems., Mary Aderayo Bamimore, Rose Anne Devlin, Gregory S Zaric, Amit X Garg, Sisira Sarma

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Publications

OBJECTIVES: In the middle to late 2000s, many family physicians switched from a Family Health Group (FHG; a blended fee-for-service model) to a Family Health Organization (FHO; a blended capitation model) in Ontario, Canada. The evidence on the link between physician remuneration schemes and quality of diabetes care is mixed in the literature. We examined whether physicians who switched from the FHG to FHO model provided better care for individuals living with diabetes relative to those who remained in the FHG model.

METHODS: Using longitudinal health administrative data from 2006 to 2016, we investigated the impact of physicians switching from …

About 80% of the factors affecting health outcomes lay outside of the domain of traditional clinical care.1 Public Health 3.0, the next level of public health practice, expands the reach of public health practitioners to address upstream factors traditionally outside the scope of health initiatives, such as housing affordability and educational attainment.2 Public Health 3.0 calls upon local health departments (LHDs) to be the core of this effort by creating impactful change through intentional cross-sectoral collaborations.2 The Resilience Catalyst (RC) program, designed by the Center for Community Resilience at the George Washington University, is being used to guide Public Health …

Purpose: Maternal micronutrient deficiencies occurring during periconceptional, pregnancy, and postpartum periods are a leading cause of adverse pregnancy outcomes globally. The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are a set of reference values used to assess and guide nutrient intakes of healthy individuals. However, the current DRIs for pregnancy and lactation may be limited in their methods and included populations. The present study analyzed the current DRIs for their inclusion of pregnant women and geographic representativeness. Methods: Meta-research methods were applied to the DRI report for vitamins B6, B12, folate, and choline in four steps: search, screening, full-text data extraction, and data …
