Conjunction Of Factors Impacting The 2019-2020 Flu Season In The Us, Yichen Wang
Conjunction Of Factors Impacting The 2019-2020 Flu Season In The Us, Yichen Wang
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2021
The 2019-2020 flu season is regarded as one of the most serious ones in decades. Previous researchers usually studied the effects of different factors on seasonal flu separately instead of their conjugate impact, so we wanted to find how multiple factors combine to affect the spread of influenza in the 2019-2020 flu season in America. We chose types of virus (A and B), environmental factors (temperature, precipitation, relative humidity), population density, and influenza vaccination status for different age groups which are statewide data containing monthly information from Sep. 2019 to May 2020. By principal component analysis, we could see the …

The pandemic of COVID-19 is a life-threatening disease that entailed all governments but especially the U.S government, to quickly prevent methods of spreading the virus while strategically putting in place a plan for biological testing for a vaccine for immunity. The purpose was to determine how effective the formulation of a COVID-19 vaccine and the distribution would impact the mortality with efficacy rates. Besides, this research paper underlines the principles for ethical and equitable distribution for mass immunization. A comparative analysis between the Trump Administration and the Biden Administration will be presented regarding the funding stream, distribution of vaccinations, and …

Population Health Leadership Series: PopTalk Webinars
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, increased stress and anxiety has only further exacerbated the problem of violence in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Through the Safer Hospitals Initiative, Connecticut hospitals have united to develop and implement strategies to create a culture of safety for patients and staff within each of the institutions. This initiative applies the power of high reliability principles to standardize approaches to combatting violence in microsystems and macrosystems throughout an organization. We will share the strategies that may be replicated in your organizations to keep individuals working in healthcare organizations safer by stopping violence before it begins.

Fears And Barriers: Problems In Breast Cancer Diagnosis And Treatment In Pakistan, Sidra Saeed, Muhammad Asim, Malik Muhammad Sohail
Community Health Sciences
Background: Women in Pakistan lack appropriate awareness about diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer due to a range of multifaceted barriers. There is a dearth of literature examining the socio-cultural factors that inhibit women from breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment in Punjab, Pakistan. Addressing this gap, this qualitative study sought to identify and explore the barriers that hinder women from seeking timely screening and treatment.
Methods: In this process 45 women (age = 18-50 years) with breast cancer were purposively sampled and interviewed from the Punjab Institute of Nuclear Medicine (PINUM) hospital, Faisalabad, Pakistan.
Results: An inductive approach was …

Objective: This research describes the clinical pathway and characteristics of two cohorts of patients. The first cohort consists of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of lung cancer while the second consists of patients with a solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) and no evidence of lung cancer. Linked data from an electronic medical record and the Louisiana Tumor Registry were used in this investigation. Materials and methods: REACHnet is one of 9 clinical research networks (CRNs) in PCORnet®, the National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network and includes electronic health records for over 8 million patients from multiple partner health systems. Keats, Nadia Akseer, Pravheen Thurairajah, Simon Cousens, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Global Young Women’S Nutrition Investigators’ Group
Woman and Child Health
Context: Approximately 7.3 million births occur annually among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries. Pregnant adolescents constitute a nutritionally vulnerable group that could benefit from intervention to mitigate the mortality and adverse birth outcomes associated with adolescent pregnancy.
Objective: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the following: (1) the effect of multiple-micronutrient (MMN) supplementation vs iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation among adolescents on maternal morbidity, birth outcomes, and mortality outcomes, (2) the effects of MMN supplementation in adolescents compared with the effects in adult women, and (3) the effect modification, if any, of MMN …

Développement D'Une Méthode De Mesure De L'Exposition Sonore Effective Intraauriculaire Pour Une Utilisation En Milieu De Travail, Hugues Nélisse, Fabien Bonnet, Marcos Nogarolli, Jérémie Voix

Faculty Publications
Background: Population mobility is closely associated with COVID-19 transmission, and it could be used as a proximal indicator to predict future outbreaks, which could inform proactive nonpharmaceutical interventions for disease control. South Carolina is one of the US states that reopened early, following which it experienced a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases.
Objective: The aims of this study are to examine the spatial-temporal relationship between population mobility and COVID-19 outbreaks and use population mobility data to predict daily new cases at both the state and county level in South Carolina.
Methods: This longitudinal study used disease surveillance …

Perceptions Of Covid-19 In College Students: Effect On Emotional Well-Being, Mikayla N. Murphy
Honors College Theses
This study explores the connection between emotional well-being of college students and the COVID-19 pandemic. Many physical distancing practices have negatively affected emotional well-being, such as increased time alone and screen time. A purposive sample of convenience was utilized to collect information on the emotional well-being of a selected group of students at two time points: January through March 2020 and January/February 2021. Students from the Honors College were selected as the study population. The survey questions were administered electronically through Qualtrics software, Version: February 2021. Of the 101 survey responses obtained between January 27 and February 22, 2021, 89 …

Fastidious Bacteria Grow Better in the Right Media
Purpose: Nisseria gonorrheae is a common bacteria that causes a sexually transmitted disease. This disease can cause significant discomfort for both men and women, which can lead to infertility. Treatment of the bacterium has been a simple matter of diagnosis and antibiotic treatment in the past, but now this bacterium is becoming increasingly antibiotic resistant because of excessive antimicrobial treatments. A novel way to treat N. gonorrheae infection involves focusing on finding bacteriophage that targets N. gonorrheae. N. gonorrheae broth cultures are used to enrich for bacteriophage; but the current …
