Community Health Sciences

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of infection, genotypes and risk factors for human papillomavirus (HPV) among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women living with and without HIV in Pakistan. Anal infection with HPV is very common worldwide among MSM, particularly among MSM living with HIV. The high prevalence of HIV among MSM and male-to-female transgendered individuals in Pakistan is a significant health concern since access to screening and health-seeking is often delayed in this stigmatised key population.
Design: This cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2016 and November 2017.

A Mixed Methods Case Study Of Food Shopping In A Community With High Infant Mortality, Sarah Evenosky, Eleanor Lewis, Katherine Isselmann Disantis

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

In the U.S., preterm birth disproportionately impacts certain racial/ethnic groups, with Black women experiencing preterm birth at a rate 50% higher than other groups. Among the numerous factors that likely contribute to these increased rates are neighborhood characteristics, such as food environment. In this mixed-methods case study, we evaluated how pregnant women living in a predominately minority, lower income community with high preterm birth rates navigate and perceive their food environment. Qualitative interviews were performed to assess perceptions of food environment (n = 7) along with geographic and observational assessments of their food environment. Participants traveled an average of 2.10 …

This cross-sectional study assessed concussion symptom knowledge of parents of middle school (MS) children (aged 10–15 years) through a free-response item that solicited concussion symptoms and compared findings to a pre-validated scale-based measure. A self-administered online questionnaire was sent to a panel of randomly selected United States residents who were recruited by a third-party company, aged ≥ 18 years, and identified as parents of MS children. Via a free-response item, parents listed what they believed were concussion symptoms. Multiple sections later, parents identified potential concussion symptoms via a scale measure, which featured 25 items (22 actual symptoms, three distractor symptoms) …

Vectors: Immunity In Commercial Aviation, Timothy M. Ravich Nov 2021

Vectors: Immunity In Commercial Aviation, Timothy M. Ravich

William & Mary Business Law Review

COVID-19 nearly wiped out demand for commercial air travel in 2020, driving down passenger traffic by a jaw-dropping 94.3% from the previous year. The airline industry thus understandably lobbied for a government bailout to manage what was nothing short of an existential crisis, with losses exceeding $35 billion. Less worthy of sympathy, however, were the ad hoc policies airlines unhelpfully put in the path of their customers even while securing for themselves $25 billion in payroll grants together with a similar sum in low-interest loans. For example, carriers refused to provide refunds or liquidate travel credits in a straightforward way …

Community-Informed Perspectives On Barriers To Accessing New Orleans' Community-Based Clinics, Nikki Khorsandi

Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association

Background: Low income, under- and uninsured patients in New Orleans can access health services through community-based clinics. Ensuring access to these services is critical in reducing health disparities and requires community members’ perspectives on existing barriers and how they can be removed. Methods: An eight-member community advisory council (CAC) met monthly to share perceived barriers to accessing care and generate solutions for individual clinics, the system of clinics, or statewide policy. Results: Eighteen barriers were identified by councilmembers, five of which were specifically discussed throughout CAC tenure. Councilmembers identified that a root cause of these barriers stemmed from a lack …

Implicit Bias And Racial Disparities In School Discipline Responses In Louisiana, Casey L. Thomas, Kaylin Beiter, Ashley Fenton, Stephen Phillippi

Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association

Background: In Louisiana schools, there is high incidence and racially disparate use of suspension and expulsion. This analysis assessed parish-level associations between racial disparities in school discipline and implicit racial biases. Methods: Investigators examined disparities in the proportion of Black students experiencing a school discipline outcome relative to White peers from all parishes (N=64) over four years. Implicit bias measures were derived from scores on the Implicit Association Test (IAT), which estimates a participant’s implicit associations between race categories and positive or negative feelings. IAT test date was used to stratify results by school year. The analysis included 10,652 IAT …

Navigating The Pandemic As It Enters Its Second Year, Havovi Joshi

Asian Management Insights

Many countries, enabled by the rapid vaccine rollout, experienced some moments of relief from the Covid-19 pandemic as they embarked on their long and winding transition toward normalcy. However, despite the Herculean effort expended, achieving herd immunity remains a distant goal for many due to the emergence of the highly transmissible and lethal Delta variant and the persistence of vaccine hesitancy. As such, the coronavirus continues to upend lives, businesses, and society, and the playbook for survival will still be a work-in-progress

Fidelity Monitoring In The Solution Focused Wellness For Hiv (Sfwh) Intervention For Women, Helen Taylor Yates, Spencer Elise Lee Nov 2021

Fidelity Monitoring In The Solution Focused Wellness For Hiv (Sfwh) Intervention For Women, Helen Taylor Yates, Spencer Elise Lee

Journal of Solution Focused Practices

Solution Focused methods are often interpreted by different practitioners with a degree of flexibility and adaptation to specific practice settings (Lehmann & Patton, 2012). This flexibility is one of the features that makes SFBT a very client-centered approach and has been highlighted as one of the key aspects of successful co-construction of desired outcomes with clients (Franklin et al., 2017). This collaborative approach is possible due to SFBT’s utilization of social constructionist principals in the solution-building process (Blundo & Simon, 2015). While encouraging flexibility of implementation of SFBT, identifying the main tenets of the therapy, including specific techniques and mindsets …

Background: Children and adolescents in the United States face disparities by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, including unequal access to consistent and high-quality healthcare. School-based health centers (SBHCs) promote health equity by delivering primary, mental, and other health services directly to students in their schools. The COVID-19 outbreak in the United States resulted in schools and SBHCs closing their physical sites and pivoting to virtual service delivery. Methods: In the months immediately following school closures, school-based health center practitioners and sponsors participated in an online listening series to share how they used technology to creatively advertise services, engage with students, …
