Thailand has struggled with malnutrition rates in young children. Rice is a key component of Southeast Asian diets and a whole grain rice varietal (Sin Lek) may support improved nutrition. Diet can influence cognitive function and human gut microbiota, which were explored in the context of a rice intervention. We conducted a pilot study using a non-randomized, crossover clinical trial of Sin Lek rice versus traditional white rice consumption in elementary school children in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Outcomes related to diet, anthropological factors, cognitive function (e.g., short-term working memory, attention, impulsivity), and gut microbial populations were measured at baseline and …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference
Context/background: In July 2020, recognizing the potential negative interaction between COVID-19 quarantine and medical and social needs, Oregon Health & Science University Family Medicine at Richmond developed a workflow to support clinic patients with acute social and medical needs who test positive for COVID-19. The workflow relies on Community Health Workers (CHWs) who call these patients and ask questions intended to identify social and medical needs. Within this workflow, patients with identified needs are connected by CHWs to community resources. The workflow is intended to reduce barriers to patients’ ability to maintain isolation while adhering to physical distancing guidelines, and …

Focusing The Lens: Recognizing U.S. Prisons As Fortresses Of Environmental Injustice, Elijah R. Hart
OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference
Background:
Mass incarceration, the dramatic increase in incarcerated people over the past four decades, disproportionately impacts Black, Brown, Indigenous, and low-income communities in the United States. The health impacts of imprisonment in the U.S. are well documented (increased risk for chronic health disorders and mortality). However, public health professionals have only recently recognized the relationship between the prison industrial complex and environmental justice issues.
Methods:
Through a mini-literature review of the experiences of prisoners across the nation, this presentation will examine the location of prisons, exposure to environmental hazards in prisons, and pollution from prisons as key pathways by which …

Public Health Policy: Internet Access To Advance Health Equity, Juanita Graham Dnp-Rn, Frsph, Victor Sutton Phd
Journal of Public Health in the Deep South
Internet access could be the 21st century’s great equalizer, interrupting access barriers that negatively impact health. Mississippi reigns as the poorest state in the nation (CB, 2020), with some of the country’s worst health outcomes (UHF, 2022), particularly among rural populations. The Community Engagement Center (CEC), one of three Jackson Heart Study (JHS) centers, leverages community partnerships and connections to improve public health. In these times of public health crises, connections are relevant - that is, internet connections. Internet, or broadband, access is the far upstream approach needed to improve the social determinants that negatively impact Mississippians’ health. The National …

Overcrowded Housing Increases Risk For Covid-19 Mortality: An Ecological Study., Karan Varshney, Talia Glodjo, Jenna Adalbert
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVES: Overcrowded housing is a sociodemographic variable associated with increased infection and mortality rates from communicable diseases. It is not well understood if this association exists for COVID-19. Our objective was hence to determine the association between household overcrowding and risk of mortality from COVID-19, and this was done by performing bivariable and multivariable analyses using COVID-19 data from cities in Los Angeles County.
RESULTS: Bivariate regression revealed that overcrowded households were positively associated with COVID-19 deaths (standardized β = 0.863, p < 0.001). COVID-19 case totals, people aged 60+, and the number of overcrowded households met conditions for inclusion in the backwards stepwise linear regression model. Analysis revealed all independent variables were positively associated with mortality rates, primarily for individuals 60 + (standardized β

Self-Portraits For Social Change: Audience Response To A Photovoice Exhibition By Women With Disability, Diane Macdonald, Angela Dew, Karen Fisher Assoc Prof, Katherine Boydell
The Qualitative Report
Negative attitudes about and behaviours towards women with disability are harmful and exclusionary, contributing to poorer health, income, educational, and employment outcomes. Our study focused on what audiences learnt, felt, and did (what changed) after viewing self-portraits and stories by women with disability. We questioned whether a public exhibition of their artworks, created through photovoice methodology, could be an effective platform to provoke social change and increase inclusion for people with disability. We collected audience response to our exhibition to address a research gap and to provide an example for other photovoice researchers. We employed interpretive thematic analysis through a …

Analysis revealed all independent variables were positively associated with mortality rates, primarily for individuals 60 + (standardized β1 = 0.375, p = 0.001), followed by overcrowded households (standardized β2 = 0.346, p = 0.014), and total COVID-19 cases (standardized β3 = 0.311, p < 0.001).
