The Effects Of Hormonal Contraceptive Use On Perceptions Of Social Stress In Women, Ashton Jones May 2022

The Effects Of Hormonal Contraceptive Use On Perceptions Of Social Stress In Women, Ashton Jones

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

Hormonal contraceptives are widely used due to their efficiency in preventing pregnancy. Although women are often informed of the physical effects of hormonal contraceptives, there is little emphasis on mental effects, such as increased rates of depression and changes in social perception. The current study examined perceptions of social stress among women before beginning hormonal contraceptives, and two months after using hormonal contraceptives. I hypothesized that women would experience increased social stress after beginning hormonal contraceptives, compared to a control group of women who were also assessed twice. Results did not support this hypothesis; there was no difference in interpersonal …

Identification Of Individual And Regional Features Impacting Hiv/Aids Knowledge And Sentiment, Stetson Ledbetter May 2022

Identification Of Individual And Regional Features Impacting Hiv/Aids Knowledge And Sentiment, Stetson Ledbetter

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Despite constant media coverage and public interest in current epidemics, the prevalence and lack of awareness of HIV/AIDS is often overlooked on campuses and communities associated with colleges and universities. Several interrelated factors, such as LGBTQ+ status, being a college student, gender, coming from a rural area, ethnicity, and educational attainment are known to contribute to behaviors regarding sexual health, especially non-curable diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Consequently, it is imperative to explore trends in both the HIV/AIDS knowledge and sentiments towards individuals with HIV/AIDS in college environments. Current work utilizes a nonprobability sample recruited through media platforms, representing individuals that …

The Need For Specialized Substance Abuse Treatment For Gay Men In The United States, Sarah Nance May 2022

The Need For Specialized Substance Abuse Treatment For Gay Men In The United States, Sarah Nance

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Substance misuse and abuse is a global public health issue that affects sexual minority populations at a higher rate than the heterosexual population. Many popular gay socialization strategies include gay bars and chemsex, or sexualized drug use, in which substance use is common in both. The Minority Stress Model provides an explanation as to how stigma embedded in a society and within a person can act as a stressor and manifest into a substance abuse disorder. This stigma acts for many as a barrier to seeking healthcare out of fear of discrimination, causing many to hide their identity when seeking …

In 2021, the prevalence of arthritis in USA was around 24% with a projection of 37% by 2030. Prevalence of arthritis …

Examining The Role Of Prosocial Tendencies And Social Anxiety In Hazardous Drinking Practices Among College Students, Helena M. Berlin May 2022

Examining The Role Of Prosocial Tendencies And Social Anxiety In Hazardous Drinking Practices Among College Students, Helena M. Berlin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Over 40% of the United States (US) population aged 18 to 25 is enrolled at postsecondary institutions, and 31.4% of college students report risky alcohol use (i.e., binge drinking). Identifying risk and protective factors for this population is a public health priority. The primary objective of this study was to examine the additive and multiplicative relationship of prosocial tendencies and social anxiety on hazardous drinking (AUDIT scores). A secondary aim was to examine whether these relationships differed by participation in college organizations (Greekaffiliation, athletic participation, both, and neither). Cross-sectional data were collected from 9,196 college students (ages 18-25) from 12 …

Quality Of Care: A Business Case For Us Hospitals, Iwimbong Kum Ghabowen May 2022

Quality Of Care: A Business Case For Us Hospitals, Iwimbong Kum Ghabowen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act present some threats and opportunities to many hospitals across the USA. Under the Value-Based Purchasing Program, acute care hospitals' rewards are tied to incentive payments for the quality of care provided in the inpatient hospital. In the last 20 years, growing research has examined the effects of the quality of care on the financial performance of hospitals. There is a gap in the literature, particularly exploring the relationship between quality and hospital financial performance using national samples. This dissertation investigates the association between patients' experience of care, 30-day readmission rates, and case-mix-index (CMI) …

Increasing Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Intent And Knowledge Through An Educational Intervention, Angelica E. Musumeci May 2022

Increasing Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Intent And Knowledge Through An Educational Intervention, Angelica E. Musumeci

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a widely discussed topic in healthcare as it affects patients of all genders and ages who partake in sexual activity. The most significant concern it poses to those at risk is HPV-related cancer. Fortunately, a vaccination exists that targets specific strains associated with these types of cancers. Despite evidence-based research supporting the vaccination’s efficacy and safety, lack of awareness and misinformation diminish the receipt of the vaccine and drive the lack of protection. Thus, educational interventions directed at parents and caregivers, which aims to improve their understanding of HPV and the vaccination’s benefits, is key to …

The Association Between Neighborhood Social Media Use And Social Cohesion, Sense Of Community And Perceived Safety Among Adults In Clark County, Nevada, Emily Strickler

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Place-based health is a concept that suggests where you live has an effect on your health outcomes. Social health factors such as social cohesion, sense of community, and perceived safety are all influenced by the neighborhood environment, and positively associated with health outcomes such as self-reported minutes of physical activity and symptoms of depression. With the increasing popularity of social media sites used specifically for neighborhood purposes, more neighbors are connecting than ever before. The purpose of this study was to determine if use of neighborhood social media sites was associated with the social health factors of social cohesion, sense …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

BACKGROUND: Cost-related nonadherence compromises successful and effective management of chronic disease. The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) and Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) aimed to increase the affordability of outpatient prescription drugs for older adults (older than age 64 years). The Medicare Part D prescription drug insurance coverage gap (“donut hole”) created by the MMA was fully closed in 2020 by the ACA.

OBJECTIVES: To (1) describe prescription drug coverage and financial hardship from purchasing prescription drugs among older American adults for 2021, (2) compare these results with findings from data collected before the MMA …

Periodontal Disease And Covid-19, Zhaozhao Chen Dds, Ms, Phd, Laurie K. Mccauley Dds, Ms, Phd, Purnima S. Kumar Bds, Ms, Phd, Hom-Lay Wang Dds, Ms, Phd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

As the gateway to the respiratory system, the oral cavity can play an essential role in SARS-CoV-2 invasion and transmission. Besides high expression of angiotensin‐converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the oral cavity can harbor viral particles in saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, and the periodontal pocket. Microbial and inflammatory associations closely link periodontitis and COVID-19. In this review, we summarize the possible oral manifestations of COVID‐19, its association with periodontal diseases, the plausible underlying mechanisms of microbial and inflammatory crosstalk between COVID‐19 and periodontal diseases, and mitigation protocols during periodontal treatment.

Six Feet Apart: Relational Turbulence Theory And Coping With Covid-19 Within Long-Distance Relationships, Mia Waymack May 2022

Six Feet Apart: Relational Turbulence Theory And Coping With Covid-19 Within Long-Distance Relationships, Mia Waymack

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Among research that currently exists, no studies thus far combine elements of COVID-19, long-distance relationships, and Relational Turbulence Theory to explain how each of these elements impacts the others, if at all. Previous research does exist on each of these elements individually, although research regarding the long-term effects of COVID-19 on relationships is minimal considering the pandemic is ongoing. Long-distance relationships have been studied using Relational Turbulence Theory in previous studies within military relationships but have not been studied in connection with either COVID-19 or among college students. This study was conducted by way of qualitative, one-on-one interviews to determine …

Public Health Contagion Of White Supremacy: Examining The Pipeline Of Attitudes About Racism And Racial History Education Among High School Students., Trinidad Jackson May 2022

Public Health Contagion Of White Supremacy: Examining The Pipeline Of Attitudes About Racism And Racial History Education Among High School Students., Trinidad Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We are living in compounded states of upheaval. Violence and exemption from it across socioecological levels have shaped how humans survive, thrive, and die. While different violence typologies exist, the U.S., prioritizes interpersonal violence as its primary target of intervention, often through structural means that foster and reinforce interpersonal violence. The omission of structural and cultural agents and outcomes of violence allows perpetrators to infiltrate and reproduce savage, dehumanizing ideologies in perpetuity. Instead of sustaining societal pillars that oppress and destroy, we must fertilize public health research, practice, and sociopolitical activism with pillars that both inform and activate liberatory consciousness …

Tennessee Abortion Policy Summary - May 2022, Center For Applied Reasearch And Evaluation In Women's Health, East Tennessee State University May 2022

Tennessee Abortion Policy Summary - May 2022, Center For Applied Reasearch And Evaluation In Women's Health, East Tennessee State University

Center for Applied Research and Evaluation (CARE) in Women's Health Issue Briefs

With the U.S. Supreme Court anticipated to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision (and the modifications to that decision by Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey from 1992), the protection, regulation, or prohibition of abortion would likely default to state laws and state constitutions. Therefore, to understand how this upcoming Supreme Court decision could impact access to abortion in Tennessee, it is useful to examine both key current state laws in effect related to abortion access, as well as the current state of access to abortion in Tennessee. This brief intends only to summarize current Tennessee state laws …

Expand Nemt Across Central And Western Nebraska, Bri Parr May 2022

Expand Nemt Across Central And Western Nebraska, Bri Parr

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The average age of adults in the US is increasing, especially in rural areas. Approximately 60 million individuals live in the rural US, including millions of Medicare beneficiaries. Older rural Americans are more likely to be in poverty, unhealthy, and medically underserved. They rely heavily on government health insurance programs, such as Medicare, to provide for their health care needs. Unfortunately, for many older adults living in rural areas, health care is both difficult to access or in some cases completely unavailable. This is due to several factors, including the lack of specialist care in rural areas (mental health specialists, …

If A Tree Falls In The Forest: Presidential Press Conferences And Early Media Narratives About The Covid-19 Crisis, Masha Krupenkin, Kai Zhu, Dylan Walker, David Rothschild

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, as we confronted questions about social distancing, masking wearing, and vaccines, public safety experts warned that the consequences of a misinformed population would be particularly dire due to the serious nature of the threat and necessity of severe collective action to keep the population safe. Thus, the media and the political elites (e.g., President of the United States) who possess the power to set the information agenda around COVID-19 bear a huge responsibility for the general welfare. Through automated text analysis of complete transcripts of national cable, network, and local news, we explore their narratives surrounding …

Eat Well, Be Well: Basic Needs Initiative's Online Hub For Nutrition Education, Misha Moseley

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Basic Needs Initiative at California State University, Monterey Bay is a department that provides students with food, housing, and wellness resources. Over half of the university's students experience food insecurity, and over 85% use non-academic resources to learn about nutrition. This project adds a dietary health section to the department’s website to increase students’ access to nutrition education. It addresses the micro-level agency problem that too few students eat a healthy, balanced diet. Unhealthy eating is a risk factor for food insecurity, so the project indirectly addresses the macro-level health problem that too many college students in California experience food …

Medical Students' Knowledge Of And Attitudes Towards Sex Work In New Orleans, Louisiana, Alexis Hernandez, Anjali Deendyal, Tiana Dimasi, Gina Defelice, Cara Coren, Jaime Alleyn, Cecilia Gambala

Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association

Background: Sex work is defined as the exchange of sexual services for goods, money, or other services. The criminalization and stigma surrounding sex work disincentivizes sex workers from disclosing their profession to medical providers and impedes their access to comprehensive care. Medical education provides an entry point to improve this provider-patient relationship and promote better health outcomes for the sex work community. By assessing medical students’ knowledge and attitudes towards sex workers, we can better understand how to expand medical education to increase access to and quality of care for sex workers. Methods: Students at Louisiana State University (LSU) and …
