Bypass: A Memoir, Joseph A. Amato Apr 2000

Bypass: A Memoir, Joseph A. Amato

Purdue University Press Books

This inquiry into matters of heart, conducted under the shadows of pending surgery, awakens themes of boyhood, education, and marriage and prompt questions about loyalty to a deceased father, connections with immigrant grandparents, loss and rediscovery of faith, and solitude versus community. A medical narrative, the book also chronicles a span of contemporary American life. Throughout Amato's account, the consistent reminder of his upcoming bypass invites readers to reflect on their own lives and selves. This is an intelligent and witty guide to an immensely common operation that nevertheless for each patient constitutes a unique experience-a veritable rite of passage.

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among alcohol consumption, sexual assault and rape, and nonsexual violence in a college population at a large Northeastern university. A 49-item questionnaire was designed to elicit responses from both victims and perpetrators. Of the 1,084 respondents: 518 were male, 566 were female, the majority were White (91.8%), and in the 18-21 age range. Selecting For Random Drug Testing At Union Pacific Railroad, Jennifer Meyer, Paul Savory Jan 1997

Selecting For Random Drug Testing At Union Pacific Railroad, Jennifer Meyer, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Many industries have recently implemented programs to detect and deter the use of recreational drugs in the workplace. The transportation industry has received careful government attention, particularly where the safety of the public may be seriously affected by employees who use drugs. Following federal guidelines, Union Pacific Railroad first implemented a random drug-testing plan in 1990. Because the assigned jobs, shifts, and work locations of many railroad employees change frequently, defining the selection population was particularly challenging. In its continuing efforts to validate and improve this plan, Union Pacific Railroad sought an external evaluation to determine the fairness of its …

Obstetrical Care In The Baffin Region, Northwest Territories: Geographical, Medical And Cultural Perspectives, Christine Clara Earnshaw Jan 1996

Obstetrical Care In The Baffin Region, Northwest Territories: Geographical, Medical And Cultural Perspectives, Christine Clara Earnshaw

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In the Baffin Region, and other regions of the Canadian Arctic, geographic impediments and the history of southern-based health care delivery have influenced the present health care delivery and service. This is especially the case for obstetrical care since the whole process of childbirth has been transformed into a medical issue administered mainly by southern, non-Inuit health care workers and policy makers. Using 350 maternal and infant health records from the Baffin Regional Hospitals from September 1993 to September 1994, variables such as maternal age, fertility rates and low birth weight rates were calculated for communities in the region to …

Family Medicine: A Brief Review Of Its History And Concepts And Its Relevance To Pakistan, Rukhsana Wamiq Zuberi May 1993

Family Medicine: A Brief Review Of Its History And Concepts And Its Relevance To Pakistan, Rukhsana Wamiq Zuberi

Department for Educational Development

Inmost countries of the world some form of family medicine is being practiced by members of the medical profession. In over fifty countries distinct practitioners of this form of medicine are recognized and in some countries formal designation as specialists is accorded to them. In certain countries the physicians are called family practitioners and in others they are called general practitioners. Both terms are correct as these physicians have broad-based clinical skills (generalists) and also take care of the families. In Pakistan health care is usually available only to those who can afford it. A large segment of population consists …

Predicting Alcohol Impairment: Perceived Intoxication Vs. Bac, Beverly S. Mahoney Aug 1992

Predicting Alcohol Impairment: Perceived Intoxication Vs. Bac, Beverly S. Mahoney

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this study was to report the relationship among perceived intoxication, performance impairment, and actual blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels. Fifteen subjects, aged 21 to 40, completed both single- and double-dose sessions of alcohol consumption_ BACs, reaction and anticipation time, and perceived intoxication data were collected during both sessions. Analysis of data showed that perceived intoxication was significantly related to performance impairment, but the actual BAC was not.

The Influence Of Antimicrobial Use On Bacterial Resistance, James T. Griffith Jun 1992

The Influence Of Antimicrobial Use On Bacterial Resistance, James T. Griffith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Antimicrobial resistance is becoming an increasingly serious problem accompanied by relatively few studies examining the relationship between use and resistance. The present study undertakes a twenty year analysis of antimicrobial production and factors affecting antimicrobial use for a particular microorganism (Stp. faecalis)/antimicrobial agent (Cephalothin) combination. The period is inclusive of the market introduction of the agent and considerate of prescribing practices to the present time. The accumulated data reveal that there is indeed a relationship between total drug availability (medicinal, agricultural) and increased antimicrobial resistance. The data also suggest that national (or global) use changes would likely have a long …

This paper describes the status of primary health care delivery in Pakistan and the growth of family medicine throughout the world. It stresses the need for organized postgraduate training relevant to the needs of primary health care in Pakistan and describes efforts currently under-way in this regard at the Aga Khan University Medical Center (AKUMC) in collaboration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan

Factors In The Non-Recognition Of Overseas Qualifications: The Case Of Medical Practitioners, Christine V. Farag Jan 1992

Factors In The Non-Recognition Of Overseas Qualifications: The Case Of Medical Practitioners, Christine V. Farag

Theses : Honours

The overseas qualified doctor is a potential threat to the state-sanctioned control practising doctors have over medical knowledge in Australia. The nonrecognition of qualifications of many migrant and refugee doctors, in particular from non-English speaking background (NESB) countries, presses them into a subordinate relationship lo that of registered practitioners. The ownership of medical knowledge is limited lo state-recognised practitioners, thus allowing them to maintain significant economic and social advantage within the general community. The relationship between qualified practitioners and the state is indicative of a particular dynamic in which some individuals are able to exclude others by mechanisms of social …

Effects Of An Air-Powder Polishing System On Orthodontically Bracketed And Banded Teeth, Caren M. Barnes, Carl M. Russell, Laurence R. Gerbo, Bobby R. Wells, David Barnes Jan 1990

Effects Of An Air-Powder Polishing System On Orthodontically Bracketed And Banded Teeth, Caren M. Barnes, Carl M. Russell, Laurence R. Gerbo, Bobby R. Wells, David Barnes

College of Dentistry: Faculty Publications

Since the introduction of air-powder polishing systems in 1977, air-powder polishing has been shown to be an efficient and effective method for removal of stain and plaque. Air-powder polishing systems use air, water, and sodium bicarbonate to deliver a controlled stream that propels specially processed sodium bicarbonate particles to the tooth surface. It has been demonstrated that this increasingly popular technique requires less time and less physical exertion by the operator than polishing with a rubber cup and prophylaxis paste. In addition, no heat is generated with this type of system.

Studies of the air-powder polishing method have examined its …
