Implementing An Evidence-Based Wound Care Protocol For Inpatient End-Of-Life Residents That Aligns With Hospice Comfort Care Goals, Oge C. Okeke
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Implementing an evidence-based wound care protocol for inpatient end-of-life residents that aligns with hospice comfort care goals.
Purpose
This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to adopt a patient-centered, comfort-focused approach to wound care at the DNP project site and improve patient outcomes by increasing nursing staff's knowledge of evidence-based wound treatment strategies by 20%.
Background
Curative treatments involving aggressive methods do not align with hospice principles. Residents at the project site experience increased suffering at the end of life because of limited nursing knowledge of evidence-based, atraumatic wound care practices for end-of-life patients.
Results
Pre-intervention nursing knowledge survey scores ranged …

The main goals and challenges for the life science communities in the Open Science framework are to increase reuse and sustainability of data resources, software tools, and workflows, especially in large-scale data-driven research and computational analyses. Here, we present key findings, procedures, effective measures and recommendations for generating and establishing sustainable life science resources based on the collaborative, cross-disciplinary work done within the EOSC-Life (European Open Science Cloud for Life Sciences) consortium. Bringing together 13 European life science research infrastructures, it has laid the foundation for an open, digital space to support biological and medical research. Using lessons learned from …
Impact Of Personal, Familial, And Socioeconomic Factors On The Return Of Remotely Collected Samples For Genetic Testing, Jordan Zeiger
Impact Of Personal, Familial, And Socioeconomic Factors On The Return Of Remotely Collected Samples For Genetic Testing, Jordan Zeiger
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
There are a multitude of barriers known to impact access to medical care in the United States. COVID-19 has changed and compounded these barriers and led to a shift in the setting of the genetic counseling (GC) appointment, and in sample types used for genetic testing, specifically with use of telemedicine and remotely collected saliva kits. Previous studies have described lack of patient follow-through in returning these kits. Though the understanding of barriers to medical care, including access to genetics services, is well described, there is little in the literature for how these barriers impact the return of remotely collected …
Lipid Composition And Configuration Drive Biophysical Properties Of The Mammalian Plasma Membrane, Jessica L. Symons
Lipid Composition And Configuration Drive Biophysical Properties Of The Mammalian Plasma Membrane, Jessica L. Symons
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
In the 1970s, it was established that phospholipid (PL) classes are asymmetrically distributed across the (PM) leaflets. Recapitulating strategies coupled with newly developed, high-resolution shotgun lipidomics, our lab confirmed PL class asymmetry and surprisingly measured the endoplasmic leaflet to contain double the number of PLs vs. the exoplasmic leaflet. My re-analysis of classical studies show that PM PL abundance imbalance has been a consistent finding across decades of literature. This is surprising, because bilayers do not tolerate interleaflet area imbalances to the degree that this imbalance would suggest, which prompted us to consider the existence of an elusive membrane resident …
Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening (Nips) Testing Motivations And Informed Decision Making In The Low-Risk Population, Jenna Lea
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Non-Invasive Prenatal Screening (NIPS) provides a risk assessment for aneuploidies by utilizing cell-free DNA (cfDNA). Recently, it was recommended that NIPS be offered to all pregnant people regardless of a priori risk for aneuploidy. In the absence of an increased risk, alternative motives for electing NIPS, such as for fetal sex disclosure, may arise and result in a less informed decision about proceeding with NIPS. Therefore, our study aimed to characterize low-risk patients’ motivations for NIPS election, compare motivations between informed and uninformed decision makers, and determine whether electing NIPS for fetal sex disclosure had any bearing on informed decision …

BACKGROUND: Uncompensated vestibular hypofunction can result in symptoms of dizziness, imbalance, and/or oscillopsia, gaze and gait instability, and impaired navigation and spatial orientation; thus, may negatively impact an individual's quality of life, ability to perform activities of daily living, drive, and work. It is estimated that one-third of adults in the United States have vestibular dysfunction and the incidence increases with age. There is strong evidence supporting vestibular physical therapy for reducing symptoms, improving gaze and postural stability, and improving function in individuals with vestibular hypofunction. The purpose of this revised clinical practice guideline is to improve quality of care …
Development And Implementation Of A Homogeneous And A Heterogeneous Anthropomorphic End To End Quality Assurance Audit System Phantom For Magnetic Resonance Guided Radiotherapy Modalities Ranging From 0.35 T To 1.50 T, Angela Steinmann
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Introduction: Magnetic resonance (MR) guided radiation therapy (MRgRT) is an emerging field that integrates an MR imager with either a linear accelerator or three radioactive cobalt-60 sources. Before institutions participate in multi-institutional NCI-sponsored clinical trials, they are required to perform a credentialing test provided by IROC-Houston. During the credentialing test, end-to-end phantoms are used to evaluate the institution’s ability to perform consistent and accurate radiation treatments. IROC-Houston’s conventional anthropomorphic phantoms are not visible in MR, thus they are insufficient for MRgRT systems. The purpose of this work was to create an anthropomorphic thorax and a head and neck (H&N) phantom …
Understanding Pubmed Search Results Using Topic Models And Interactive Information Visualization, Zhiguo Yu
Understanding Pubmed Search Results Using Topic Models And Interactive Information Visualization, Zhiguo Yu
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
With data increasing exponentially, extracting and understanding information, themes and relationships from larger collections of documents is becoming more and more important to researchers in many areas. PubMed, which comprises more than 25 million citations, uses Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to index articles to better facilitate their management, searching and indexing. However, researchers are still challenged to find and then get a meaningful overview of a set of documents in a specific area of interest. This is due in part to several limitations of MeSH terms, including: the need to monitor and expand the vocabulary; the lack of concept coverage …
Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use In Older Patient With Breast And Colorectal Cancer, Meghan S. Karuturi
Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use In Older Patient With Breast And Colorectal Cancer, Meghan S. Karuturi
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Our objective was to determine predictors of potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) use and its impact on outcomes (including ER visits, hospitalization, all cause death, and composite of three) in breast and colorectal cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. We used data from the SEER database linked to Medicare claims. Our cohort included patients ≥ 66 years diagnosed with of Stage II/III breast or colorectal cancer between 7/1/2007-12/31/2009. Baseline PIM was defined using the Drugs to Avoid in the Elderly list (DAE) or Beers criteria. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to determine the associations of baseline PIMs with different covariates. Event-free …
Image-Guided Proton Therapy For Online Dose-Evaluation And Adaptive Planning, Joey P. Cheung
Image-Guided Proton Therapy For Online Dose-Evaluation And Adaptive Planning, Joey P. Cheung
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The main advantage for using protons in radiotherapy is their finite range in patients, allowing for potential improved sparing of normal tissues. However, this comes at a cost of increased sensitivity to range uncertainties. Density changes along the beam path will affect the proton range and the resultant dose distribution, making it difficult to estimate the impact of visible anatomic changes to the patient dose distribution. In order to better understand the effect of anatomy change on proton dose, some form of treatment-time verification is required and methods to correct for observed changes would be beneficial. Therefore, this project aims …
The Mechanism Of Tumorigenesis In The Immortalized Human Pancreatic Cell Lines: Cell Culture Models Of Human Pancreatic Cancer, Zhe Chang
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The mechanism of tumorigenesis in the immortalized human pancreatic cell lines: cell culture models of human pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most lethal cancer in the world. The most common genetic lesions identified in PDAC include activation of K-ras (90%) and Her2 (70%), loss of p16 (95%) and p14 (40%), inactivation p53 (50-75%) and Smad4 (55%). However, the role of these signature gene alterations in PDAC is still not well understood, especially, how these genetic lesions individually or in combination contribute mechanistically to human pancreatic oncogenesis is still elusive. Moreover, a cell culture transformation model with sequential …
The Development And Implementation Of An Anthropomorphic Head Phantom For The Assessment Of Proton Therapy Treatment Procedures, Paige A. Summers
The Development And Implementation Of An Anthropomorphic Head Phantom For The Assessment Of Proton Therapy Treatment Procedures, Paige A. Summers
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Proton therapy has become an increasingly more common method of radiation therapy, with the dose sparing to distal tissue making it an appealing option, particularly for treatment of brain tumors. This study sought to develop a head phantom for the Radiological Physics Center (RPC), the first to be used for credentialing of institutions wishing to participate in clinical trials involving brain tumor treatment of proton therapy. It was hypothesized that a head phantom could be created for the evaluation of proton therapy treatment procedures (treatment simulation, planning, and delivery) to assure agreement between the measured dose and calculated dose within …
Knowledge And Perception Of The Role Of Targeted Ultrasound In Detecting Down Syndrome Among A High Risk Population, Ashley M. Henriksen
Knowledge And Perception Of The Role Of Targeted Ultrasound In Detecting Down Syndrome Among A High Risk Population, Ashley M. Henriksen
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The purpose of this study was to determine the perception and knowledge of targeted ultrasound in women who screen positive for Down syndrome in the first or second trimester, and to assess the perceived detection rate of Down syndrome by targeted ultrasound in this population. While several studies have reported patient perceptions’ of routine ultrasound, no study has specifically examined knowledge regarding the targeted ultrasound and its role in detecting Down syndrome. A targeted ultrasound is a special ultrasound during the second trimester offered to women who may be at a higher-than-average risk of having a baby with some type …
