Coolsculpting Or Cryolipolysis: A Guide For Primary Care Practitioners, Miryam Harper, Jane Lassetter Phd, Rn
Student Works
A desire for the ideal body image has influenced development of a non-surgical body shaping procedure known as CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis. The purpose of this clinical feature is to inform nurse practitioners regarding the risks and benefits of cryolipolysis so they can educate their patients. Cryolipolysis as a safe, effective method of reducing small areas of unwanted fat. Side effects are minimal and include pain, redness, bruising, and swelling. Results are seen within twelve weeks, but long-term effects are unknown. There are contraindications, and it is relatively expensive; however, it may be a safer option than invasive surgery. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Medication, And Risk Of Injury, Michelle Steele, Ray M. Merrill, Phd, Mph
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a known disorder that mainly effects children but can carry on into adulthood. It is characterized by difficulty focusing, sustaining attention, and controlling behaviors. These characterizations can cause a person with ADHD to have a more difficult time accomplishing certain tasks. In a study involving medical claims data over the years 1998 through 2005, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was shown to increase the risk of several types of injury (Merrill). The study found that ADHD was associated with more severe and frequent injuries, but that medication had a protective effect against injury among patients. …
Subsequent Primary Malignancies In Survivors Of Childhood Cancer, Emily Matson, Dr. Ray Merrill
Subsequent Primary Malignancies In Survivors Of Childhood Cancer, Emily Matson, Dr. Ray Merrill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Although cancer is often considered a disease of old age, it kills more children ages 1 to 14 years in the United States than any other cause, except unintentional injuries [1]. Through advances in diagnosing and treating cancer, child survival of cancer has improved in recent years [1, 2]. However, more research is needed on the risk of subsequent cancer following an initial diagnosis of cancer, of the same or another anatomical site. Associations between childhood and secondary cancers have implications for patient follow-up, by providing health professionals with better information on which subsequent cancer sites are most likely to …
Identifying Assessment Under-Utilization Of Prenatal Care By Resettled African Refugees And Immigrants In Salt Lake City, Jessica Lynn Lowe, Dr. Carl Hanson
Identifying Assessment Under-Utilization Of Prenatal Care By Resettled African Refugees And Immigrants In Salt Lake City, Jessica Lynn Lowe, Dr. Carl Hanson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this project was to address a continuing and growing health disparity, healthcare of refugees. 8.2 million legal immigrants entered the United States (US) between 1986 and 1993 (Gavagan, 1998). While these numbers have slowed slightly in the past couple of years due to recent legislation, it continues to remain high with over 1 million immigrants entering the US each year since 2005 (Segal, 2010).Prior to entry into the US, immigrants must receive an initial health assessment to determine if they can enter the country. Once in the US, refugees must receive an additional medical evaluation within 30 …

Public Health In Southeast Asia: Focus On Adolescent Health Research, Randy M. Page
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Outcome 1: Students will develop research and presentation skills and gain confidence in their abilities. This project directed students to work on research conducted in Thailand focusing on adolescent body image and smoking. Students participated in research planning, collecting data and making sense of results, constructing data tables, translating research instruments, developing presentations, presenting findings at international conferences, and developing a manuscript for submission. A survey instrument was constructed to assess appearance-related social pressure, body weight satisfaction, and weight loss/maintenance behaviors in adolescents. Students worked with researchers in Thailand to translate the instrument from English to Thai, and through the …

Computational Health Science Collaborative: Interdisciplinary Mentoring For Public Health And Computer Science Students, Michael D. Barnes
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Computational health science, as we define it, represents the application of innovative computer science tools, including social media and data mining, to addressing health-‐ related questions and problems. With multidisciplinary student mentoring as our aim, we have established the BYU Computational Health Science Research Collaborative (CHeSRC), which integrates the analytical strengths and skills of health scientists and computer scientists, supported by complementary expertise from other researchers, practitioners, and disciplines as applicable (http://dml.cs.byu.edu/chs/). As stated on the CHeSRC website, our mission is to better understand how technology can affect human interactions and enhance supporting environments by conducting innovative research that will …

Epidemiology Of Mycobacterium Ulcerans In Ghana, Melissa Carbine, Dr. Mckay Rollins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
M. ulcerans infection (commonly referred to as Buruli ulcer) is rapidly emerging as an important cause of human morbidity throughout the world. An indolent, deep, necrotizing lesion of the skin, Buruli ulcer is caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans (Meyers et al., 1997). The destruction of the skin tissue often leaves patients disfigured and/or severely handicapped, generating a public health dilemma with significant socioeconomic implications.

Tobacco Awareness In American Medical Schools: Comparative Study, Johsua G. Schkrohowsky, Dr. Gordon Lindsay
Tobacco Awareness In American Medical Schools: Comparative Study, Johsua G. Schkrohowsky, Dr. Gordon Lindsay
Journal of Undergraduate Research
After years of steady decline, the percentage of people who use tobacco in the United States has leveled off and has appeared to even begin an increase. Cigarette smoking remains the single largest cause of preventable death in the United States. It is not only a problem within the States but also worldwide to the extent that the World Health Organization has declared tobacco issues a top priority. An estimated 500 million people a year, living today, will eventually die of tobacco-related mortality. What can be done to prevent this horrible monstrosity?

Prevalence Corrected Prostate Cancer Incidence Rates And Trends, Mark K. Morris, Dr. Ray Merrill
Prevalence Corrected Prostate Cancer Incidence Rates And Trends, Mark K. Morris, Dr. Ray Merrill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Conventional cancer incidence rates reported in the United States represent the number of newly diagnosed cases in a given year divided by the mid-year population for that year (1). Incidence rates have been reported on an annual basis in the United States since 1973, when the National Cancer Institute initiated the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program (2). Population-based site-specific cancer incidence rates are commonly thought of as measures reflecting the average risk of developing the disease (3). However, this assumes that the rate calculation includes new cases of the cancer in the numerator and the at-risk population for …

Tobacco Awareness Among Physicians In The Former Soviet Block, L. Daniel Holsinger, Dr. Gordon Lindsay
Tobacco Awareness Among Physicians In The Former Soviet Block, L. Daniel Holsinger, Dr. Gordon Lindsay
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During the summer of 2001, I traveled for the third time to Ukraine. Unlike my previous longstay residencies in Ukraine (totaling four years), which had focused on language and cultural studies, as well as general humanitarian and missionary service, my third stay was motivated by an explicit agenda to fight big tobacco interests in that country. With strong faculty support, and convinced that the frontal marketing assault to expand tobacco markets in Ukraine was harmful to its citizens, I designed and began to carry out a research effort focused primarily on a tobacco consumption crisis in the former Soviet Union. …
