A Writing Assignment To Address Gaps In The Nursing Curriculum Regarding Health Issues Of Lgbt+ Populations., Bridget Maley, Randy Gross
A Writing Assignment To Address Gaps In The Nursing Curriculum Regarding Health Issues Of Lgbt+ Populations., Bridget Maley, Randy Gross
Publications and Research
Background: LGBT+ populations account for 4% of the US population, yet health disparities persist, which are considered a priority in health care systems. In nursing education programs, the allotment in time to cover LGBT+ health content is not mandated thus ranges from zero to several hours total in nursing curricula. Therefore, nursing students’ education regarding LGBT+ health issues remains minimal and inconsistent throughout the nation’s nursing programs.
Aim: To provide associate degree nursing students with exposure to the health disparities in LGBT+ populations through a reflective writing assignment.
Methods: The essays were culled from both sections of an established core …

From October 2015 to April 2016, there were five Stage II or higher inner nares hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) caused by nasogastric (NG) tubes, with one being unstageable. These occurred despite previously implemented evidence- based prevention strategies, which included:
• Two-person skin assessments on admission and return from surgery
• Two-person skin assessment upon transfer from unit to unit
• Daily skin assessments including under devices
• Access to the Wound Ostomy Continence (WOC) team

Why?
In our commitment as a unit to role model best practice as we support the staff that float to us from other departments, we initiated a new process so all staff that come to our unit will feel welcome, well-prepared, and supported in their roles with our patient population, environment, and our team. It has been identified that we had opportunities related to resources for staff floating from other units.

Improving Nurse-To-Nurse Handoff Communication At The Bedside Through Simulation-Based, Lisa Thornsberry Mrs.
Improving Nurse-To-Nurse Handoff Communication At The Bedside Through Simulation-Based, Lisa Thornsberry Mrs.
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Communication among nursing staff is crucial to the outcome of patient care. Poor handoff and communication among professionals can have a negative impact on the safety of patients. The systemic nature of the problem with miscommunication among healthcare clinicians supports the necessity of standardization of communication among nursing as a handoff of care.
Change of shift report, or nurse-to-nurse report ensures the transfer of critical information to promote patient safety and best practices. Transferring and communicating pertinent information from one shift to the next is one factor in providing continuity of care. Bedside Shift Report (BSR) is an opportunity to …

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common joint diseases worldwide, and especially in the United States. This disease can cause chronic pain and disability, and can impair a patient’s quality of life and ability to perform activities of daily living. There are many different factors that can contribute to the development, progression, and severity of OA. Chronic inflammation and the inflammatory response is the primary pathological process that contributes to the development of OA. With the number of cases of OA expected to increase in the United States, it is important that primary care providers have an understanding of …

Comparison Of Emla And Diclofenac On Reduction Of Pain And Phlebitis Caused By Peripheral Iv Catheter: A Randomized-Controlled Trial Study, Faezeh Babaieasl, Hossein Y. Yarandi, Seyedehtanaz Saeidzadeh, Motahareh Kheradmand
Nursing Faculty Research Publications
Peripheral venous catheters (PVC) are often used to provide hydration, medications, and blood products when the length of therapy is expected to be less that one week. Pain and phlebitis are frequent complications of PVC. Diclofenac and EMLA have been used to minimize these adverse effects, however, conflicting results have been reported regarding which has better outcomes. This double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of EMLA and Diclofenac (TDP) in attenuating PVC pain and phlebitis. The inpatient setting was chosen because of the higher frequency of PVC insertions, allowing for a sufficient sample size. One hundred …

Implementing A Discharge Navigator Reducing 30-Day Readmissions For Heart Failure And Sepsis Populations, Karen Weeks
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019
A national focus for healthcare reform is preventing hospital readmissions. Thirty-day unplanned hospital readmissions impact patient outcomes and are costly to the healthcare system. This project explored the impact between the discharge navigator and 30-day unplanned readmissions for heart failure and sepsis populations in a 238-bed community hospital located in central Virginia. The primary aim of this discharge navigator project was to reduce 30-day readmissions for the heart failure and sepsis populations to meet the goals of the top quartile for like hospitals and the evaluation of cost avoidance for these readmissions. Heart failure and sepsis populations are high risks …
Factors Associated With Hospital Readmissions Among United States Dialysis Facilities, Amber B. Paulus
Factors Associated With Hospital Readmissions Among United States Dialysis Facilities, Amber B. Paulus
Theses and Dissertations
Hospital readmissions are a major burden for patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). On average, one in three hospital discharges among patients with ESRD are followed by a readmission within 30 days. Currently, dialysis facilities are held accountable for readmissions via the ESRD Quality Incentive Program standardized readmission ratio (SRR) clinical measure. However, little is known about facility-level factors associated with readmission. Additionally, unlike other standardized measures of quality in the dialysis setting, incident patients within their first 90-days of dialysis are included in the performance calculation. This study analyzed CMS Dialysis Facility Report data from 2013 to 2016 …

Adaptation And Validation Of The Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique For Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Deniz Dishman
Theses and Dissertations
Anesthesia is a health care specialty fraught with high workload demands, stressful work environments, increased production pressure, work areas with many distractions, an increasing use of advanced technology, and the constant need to prioritize work actions. Effective clinical judgment in this dynamic environment necessitates that the provider demonstrate the ability to project what may occur secondary to actual or potential condition changes. These key elements operationalize situation awareness (SA).
High level SA is an important characteristic for the successful development of student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs). With Endsley’s “Theory of Situation Awareness” as the foundation, the goal of this study …

Utilizing Telecommunication To Provide Patient Centered Care For Adults Newly Diagnosed With Gi Cancer: A Quality Improvement Project, Laurie Miller
DNP Scholarly Projects
INTRODUCTION: A confirmed diagnosis of GI Cancer causes anxiety and stress as patients become overwhelmed with questions, worries and fears. At diagnosis, patients are not yet formally connected to the support services available to those actively receiving chemotherapy, creating a “gap period”. To help reduce anxiety, as well as, foster therapeutic relationships and improve overall patient experiences, a structured telephone communication by the gastrointestinal cancer oncology nurse practitioner (GI NP) was proposed.
AVAILABLE KNOWLEDGE: Reduction of anxiety has been shown to enhance the quality of life, increase compliance with a prescribed treatment plan and foster the ability to sign informed …

Evaluating State Anxiety Levels In Nursing Students, Rachel Stevens, Rachel Nussbaum, Tyler Blake
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Anxiety, dependent upon the frequency and severity, can be a serious problem that reduces physical, cognitive, and clinical performance. Nursing students have been found to experience especially high levels of state and trait anxiety which, according to Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory, causes a deficit in health promotion and the health of oneself. There is little evidence available about how progression through a baccalaureate nursing program in the United States impacts anxiety. This research investigates anxiety in baccalaureate nursing students and how progression through the program influences self-reported anxiety levels. A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on a convenience sample …

Nursing ETDs
Healthcare that includes high performing interprofessional clinical teams (IPTs) is one recommended strategy to provide optimal quality and cost-effective care delivery. Highly functional IPTs are characterized by effective communication, trust, respect, collaboration, information-sharing, and conflict resolution and are more efficient than individual providers working alone. Internally, IPT members’ relationships and understanding of both one’s own professional identity and others’ role and responsibilities are crucial to team functionality and effectiveness. Externally, factors including regulatory practice environments might influence the effectiveness and performance of both individual team members and the team overall. Inconsistencies between states’ practice authority (SPA) for advanced practice nurses …
