Nursing has historically been associated with the spiritual. Referred to “anamcara,” a soul friend in Celtic writings (Groves & Klauser, 2005), nurses accompany those in need, and the ill, from birth to end-of-life. The purpose of this project was to increase awareness of nurses in the identification of patients’ Spiritual Distress, a NANDA diagnosis.

Evaluation of Hyponatremia Management Pathway Implementation in a Large Academic Health System

Submission Number: 1894079

Patients with severe hyponatremia managed using the Care Signature pathway were more likely to receive hypertonic saline and had lower mortality rates compared to those not managed with the pathway. These results suggest that the pathway can improve clinical outcomes and reduce resource use. Further studies are needed to evaluate its impact on other patients’ outcomes and long-term effectiveness.

It is common for inpatient medical floor RNs to care for an average of 5-7 patients per assignment plus the role of charge RN or preceptor, which borders the legal limit in the state of Connecticut. We believe that by eliminating an assignment for charge RN’s, safe staffing ratios can be achieved, and RN higher retention rates could be achieved with a strategic PICO investigation.

• Our team identified the lack of hand hygiene throughout the department.
• Hand washing is an important part of infection prevention, and not washing hands properly or not at all, increases the rate of infections for our patients.
• Hand washing stations are out of reach or not available at all in certain areas of the emergency department, making it nearly impossible for optimal hand washing.

Presentation at the 2025 CT Nursing Research Alliance Conference

Preceptor training is crucial for the development of nurse preceptors. An interactive in-person preceptor class was developed, incorporating learning strategies such as gaming and role play. After implementation of the class, results showed an increase in confidence among nurse preceptors and satisfaction with learning through various teaching methods.

Bridgeport Hospital has successfully improved patient care by implementing Individualized Clinical Bias Scores (ICBS) for triage nurses in our emergency department (ED). Through the use of data analysis, we identified that patients of color were being assigned less urgent acuities when presenting with the same complaints as white patients. By addressing this implicit bias and implementing a new system of ICBS for our ED Triage Nurses, we have seen a significant improvement in the equitable treatment of all patients regardless of race or ethnicity.

A knowledge gap in emergency management was identified through transition to practice program (TTPP) data and discussions with new nurses and nurse leaders. In response an Emergency Management Virtual Simulation (EMVS) was implemented. This evidence based educational method is engaging and is shown to increase confidence and learning outcomes. Virtual simulation gives new graduate nurses an opportunity to collaborate, critically think in stressful situations, and “experience the real-life chaos” in a safe learning environment.

Blood cultures are a diagnostic tool used to determine the presence of bacteremia. Blood culture contamination (BCC) can lead to inappropriate use of antibiotics, increased length of stay, and increased healthcare costs. Many hospitals should have benchmarked BCC rates of <3%. However, BCC rates or false positives are known to be highest in emergency departments and there has been limited research on integrating multi-method approaches to reduce BCC rates. Purpose: The aim of this quality improvement project was to reduce the monthly percentage of BCC in an academic emergency department through implementation of a robust multi-method intervention targeting nurses and patient care technicians who perform phlebotomy for blood cultures.

The intervention was implemented in four approaches beginning in June 2022: Focused Education, Dashboard Utilization, Campaign Initiatives, and Improvement to RN Workflow. Focused education consisted of numerous electronic and in-person trainings. Dashboard utilization involved consistently updating staff of real time metrics of BCC. Patient satisfaction is clearly linked to how long a patient waits for their procedure. In order to positively impact patient satisfaction we evaluated start times for our non-invasive cardiology procedures. According to Press Ganey Associates when time spent waiting is 0-20 minutes, overall patient satisfaction ranges from 89.8 to 95.4%.

Transradial coronary interventions appear to be increasing in all cardiac catheterization laboratories across the country. The benefits of this approach have become apparent with fewer bleeding complications, faster recovery time and most of all, improved patient satisfaction. These benefits indirectly increase patient throughput and decrease costs due to more efficient resource utilization. With increased financial constraints transradial coronary procedures are also a benefit in cost reductions.
