Anesthesia Informed Consent: An Objective Structured Clincial Examination, Joshua Powell
Anesthesia Informed Consent: An Objective Structured Clincial Examination, Joshua Powell
Doctoral Projects
Informed consent is a fundamental component of anesthesia practice and is recognized as professional Standard IV by the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA). Despite its importance, anesthesia providers often face challenges in effectively obtaining consent from patients. Within The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Nurse Anesthesia Program (NAP), a need was identified to strengthen student competency in conducting anesthesia informed-consent discussions. This project developed and implemented an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) as a standardized, evidence-based approach to teach and assess informed-consent skills in alignment with the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA, 2019) standards. The intervention was designed …
The Fascia Iliaca Regional Nerve Block Using Ultrasound And Landmark Technique: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Nurse Anesthetists, Braxton T. Beech, Parker F. Rigby
The Fascia Iliaca Regional Nerve Block Using Ultrasound And Landmark Technique: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination For Nurse Anesthetists, Braxton T. Beech, Parker F. Rigby
Doctoral Projects
The fascia iliaca block (FIB) is an effective regional anesthesia technique used in various clinical settings, including operating rooms, emergency departments, and pain management clinics. Despite its advantages in reducing postoperative complications and minimizing opioid use, FIB remains underutilized among Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), primarily due to limited exposure and training. This doctoral project examines the implementation of an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) as an educational intervention to enhance CRNA proficiency in performing FIB using both ultrasound-guided and landmark techniques.
A pre- and post-test study design was conducted with 18 CRNA participants attending a continuing education workshop. Demographic …
Enhancing Crna's Knowledge Of Radiation Safety Through Online Education, Angela Iledan, Madeline Pousson
Enhancing Crna's Knowledge Of Radiation Safety Through Online Education, Angela Iledan, Madeline Pousson
Doctoral Projects
Although ionizing radiation is frequently used in anesthesia-related procedures, many CRNAs receive minimal training in radiation safety principles and protective measures. This knowledge gap increases the risk of cumulative radiation exposure for providers and patients. To address the issue, this doctoral project developed and implemented an online educational intervention designed to enhance CRNAs’ understanding of radiation safety, ultimately promoting safer practices in radiation-prone environments.
The doctoral project follows a QI and EBP approach that incorporated diverse adult learning styles to enhance engagement and knowledge retention of CRNAs. The online educational module was designed and delivered to CRNAs that currently practice …
Lateral Violence Awareness In Nursing Students At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Aika Owens
Lateral Violence Awareness In Nursing Students At The University Of Southern Mississippi, Aika Owens
Honors Theses
The purpose of this honors thesis was to obtain descriptive data about how nursing students at the University of Southern Mississippi School of Professional Nursing Practice perceive lateral violence in their clinical rotations and educational environments. This Honors thesis is significant to nursing because although lateral violence is a well-researched topic among scholars of nursing practice, there is little gathered data regarding lateral violence among nursing students, specifically at the University of Southern Mississippi. Nursing students are a vital population to examine because nursing students are often first exposed to lateral violence within a clinical setting, leading to early internalization …
The Ethical Justification Of Application Of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception In Patients With Intellectual Disabilities, Kelly Savitri
The Ethical Justification Of Application Of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception In Patients With Intellectual Disabilities, Kelly Savitri
Journal of Health Ethics
This paper explores the ethical justification for the use of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) in patients with intellectual disabilities, particularly in scenarios where patients cannot provide informed consent. The tension between respecting autonomy and ensuring beneficence presents a complex challenge for healthcare providers. Drawing on historical context, current reproductive justice issues, and evolving societal attitudes towards individuals with intellectual disabilities, this essay argues for a semi-discrete model that recognizes the need to prioritize patient health and safety while valuing their autonomy. By examining the implications of both past and present practices, this study highlights the necessity for healthcare providers to …
The Ethics Of Student Attrition In Healthcare Education Programs, Kent Haina Jr, Peter A. Depergola Ii
The Ethics Of Student Attrition In Healthcare Education Programs, Kent Haina Jr, Peter A. Depergola Ii
Journal of Health Ethics
Student attrition is a problem in healthcare education programs, but there is little in the literature regarding the organizational ethics of lowering it. Some argue that lowering attrition is unethical, because it would lower academic and professional standards, potentially impacting patient care. Others say students deserve to make decisions about when to leave a course of study. However, these arguments ignore inequities in attrition, as well as the conflicts of interest in, and moral obligations of colleges and universities. Lowering attrition rates in healthcare education programs is inherently ethical because it levels the playing field for underrepresented minorities that disproportionately …
Prescription For Change: Tackling Inappropriate Antibiotic Use In Urgent Care Settings, Lachundra Mosley
Prescription For Change: Tackling Inappropriate Antibiotic Use In Urgent Care Settings, Lachundra Mosley
Doctoral Projects
A pressing global health issue that significantly contributes to antibiotic resistance is the inappropriate antibiotic prescribing for Upper Respiratory Infections (URI’s) in urgent care settings (World Health Organization [WHO], 2022). The purpose of this doctoral project was to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions for URI at an urgent care in D’Iberville, Mississippi through the implementation of an educational pamphlet.
A pre-post intervention project was conducted, collecting data on antibiotic prescribing practices via retrospective chart reviews before and after the educational intervention. Data was collected using a researcher developed screening tool based on Evidence based guidelines to distinguish viral vs bacterial infections. …
Comparison Of Two Learning Methodologies: Virtual Reality And Osce Simulation, Connor Blackwell, Tabor Mcgee
Comparison Of Two Learning Methodologies: Virtual Reality And Osce Simulation, Connor Blackwell, Tabor Mcgee
Doctoral Projects
Anesthesia education has evolved immensely over the past twenty years, and with the new virtual reality (VR) simulations created by SIMVANA, the exponential growth can continue. The anesthesia program at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) currently utilizes an educational platform known as the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) for their students’ clinical curriculum. With the development of technology and education models, the purpose of the doctoral project is to determine if VR simulation can produce more effective learning than the OSCE modules. To determine the effectiveness, pharmacologic lessons for intraoperative hypotension were administered through both platforms and then tested …

Investigating Nature-Based Mindfulness In Nurse Anesthesia Students: A Pilot Study, Douglas Lovern
Dissertations
Across the country, the mental health crisis continues to rage. Varying degrees of depression, stress, and anxiety are commonly found in college-age students. The COVID-19 pandemic augmented this crisis, but the pandemic is not the sole culprit for the escalation of mental health disorders in the United States. Students across the globe suffer mental health disorders that include depression, anxiety, and stress. Research has shown that graduate students are six times more likely to develop anxiety and depression than the general population. Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) are vulnerable to mental health disorders. SRNAs enter labor-intensive doctoral programs fraught with …
Exploring The Relationship Of The Noncognitive Variables Of Grit And Mindset In Baccalaureate Nursing Students And Their Impact On Academic Success, Alecia Hollis
Dissertations
The study aimed to evaluate how the noncognitive variables of grit and mindset could impact the academic success of baccalaureate nursing students. With the present and growing shortage of nurses, attrition within nursing programs is cause for concern. Attrition is a multifaceted problem; however, academic failure is one contributing factor. While cognitive factors, such as the standardized aptitude test (SAT), pre-nursing science GPA, pre-nursing GPA, and standardized entrance exams (Al-Alawi et al., 2020; Chisholm-Burns et al., 2021), have traditionally been used for admission criteria, increasing evidence suggests that noncognitive factors, like grit and mindset, play a crucial role in academic …
Second Victim Syndrome: Nurses Suffering In Silence, Matthew Riehm
Second Victim Syndrome: Nurses Suffering In Silence, Matthew Riehm
Dissertations
Medication errors are inherent in health care due to human fallibility and inherent systemic complexities. Nurses are often unjustly blamed after committing a medication error despite the multitude of contributing factors. Formal education and healthcare organizations focus on preventing medication errors, but little has been done to support nurses involved in these tragic incidents. Recent cases, including RaDonda Vaught and Kimberly Hiatt, demonstrated the victimization of nurses after committing medication errors that plague the healthcare system potentially causing profound psychological trauma, often known as Second Victim Syndrome, SVS. There is limited research on the phenomenon of SVS in nursing due …

Dissertations
This study investigated the association between emotional intelligence (managing and understanding), empathy, and social determinants of health (SDOH) among accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) students. Despite the exponential increase in ABSN programs in the United States, little is known about the association between these variables among this nursing student population. A cross-sectional, correlational descriptive design was used to survey 104 students completing ABSN programs in Georgia, Mississippi, Philadelphia, and Texas. Participants self-reported their socioeconomic and programmatic characteristics using a researcher-developed questionnaire. Emotional intelligence (managing and understanding) was measured using two instruments, including the Situational Test of Emotional Management …
The Leadership Experience Of Academic Chief Nurse Administrators In The State Of Georgia During The Covid-19 Pandemic Upon Return To Campus After Full Virtual Instruction: A Qualitative Study, Susie Jonassen
Dissertations
The impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic has been rated as the highest factor of intent to leave the profession in nurses serving in a leadership role. During the pandemic, crisis leadership swept across academia partly because nursing academia was not prepared for the rapid transition to virtual instruction. The reopening of nursing programs, while pandemic restrictions were still required, caused unprecedented disruptions and stress for academic leaders. One-third of nursing faculty anticipate retirement within the next two years. With the present burnout and shortage of nursing academia leaders, there was a need to explore the lived experience of academic …
The Lived Experiences Of Icu, Med-Surg, And Er Nurses In The United States Attempting To Breastfeed During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Amy Seay
Dissertations
Breastfeeding is important to promote the health of both mothers and babies (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). Many mothers experience workplace barriers and stress which negatively impact breastfeeding duration (McCardel & Padilla, 2020; Nagel et al., 2022). However, a gap in the literature exists surrounding specific barriers and the impact of stress on U.S. nurses who breastfeed. Specifically, workplace challenges and stress among nurses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic lack exploration.
This interpretive phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of ICU, Med-Surg, and ER nurses who attempted to breastfeed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Roy’s adaptation model was …
Nursing Faculty Perceptions Of Stress, Coping, And Intent To Leave The Profession In The Ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic: A Quantitative Study, Lynlee Morgan
Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted all of society to varying degrees; this impact was especially true in higher education due to an overnight transition to distance learning and incessant pivots to meet new guidelines and overcome obstacles. Nursing faculty were significantly impacted due to the responsibility of producing safe, qualified, competent practitioners to provide care in the clinical setting. The limitations in or exclusions from clinical experiences combined with the fact that faculty were managing personal concerns and had never encountered these unprecedented conditions exacerbated the challenge of preparing new nurses. This study was critical due to the faculty role and …

Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation For Volume Control And Pressure Control Ventilator Modes, Brian Bailey, Anthony Newsom
Doctoral Projects
The purpose of this doctoral project was to create a tool to teach student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) in The University of Sothern Mississippi’s (USM’s) anesthesia program about pressure control and volume control ventilator modes, and how to use them. To accomplish this goal an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) was developed. The framework used for creating this OSCE was Kolb's Theory. Kolb's Theory uses a four-stage learning cycle in which the learner encounters a new experience, reflects on the observations of said new experience, conceptualizes or modifies a concept based on this experience, and then applies their idea to …
Predictors Of Engagement In Nursing Professional Practice: Transforming Organizational Culture In The Post-Covid Healthcare Environment, Jennifer Garnand
Predictors Of Engagement In Nursing Professional Practice: Transforming Organizational Culture In The Post-Covid Healthcare Environment, Jennifer Garnand
Dissertations
Cultivating the shared belief that individuals matter within an organization enhances the empowerment of staff and supports enthusiastic engagement in organizational efforts aimed toward a common mission, vision, and goals (McShane & Von Glinow, 2019). The nursing profession has been plagued by an unprecedented decrease in engagement and diminished job satisfaction, particularly following the prolonged tenure of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to subsequent attrition amidst a staffing crisis. This quantitative predictive correlational study seeks to determine whether proactive and persevering characteristics, professional identity, and passion of nurses are predictors of engagement in a post-COVID healthcare environment. The research was based …

Advances in healthcare technology has changed how healthcare professionals care for patients, increasing the importance of Advance Directives (ADs). ADs are legal documents describing patient end-of-life care wishes. Despite the usefulness of ADs, particularly in oncology settings, most patients do not have one.
This qualitative content analysis study examined knowledge and attitudes of ADs among oncology nurses to obtain a better understanding of ADs. Literature on ADs and nurses is dominated by quantitative research. This study addresses knowledge gaps best filled by qualitative methods.
Ten experienced oncology nurses answered eleven open-ended questions using online video conference interviews. The eleven questions …
Full Practice Authority: Determining Readiness Among Nurse Practitioner Students In Mississippi, Betty Hoffman
Full Practice Authority: Determining Readiness Among Nurse Practitioner Students In Mississippi, Betty Hoffman
Doctoral Projects
Full practice authority has been granted to nurse practitioners by many states. These practitioners are educated and trained as full primary providers of health care. Full practice authority for nurse practitioners is not granted in Mississippi, which currently ranks in the lowest positions for health care in the United States. The low ranking can be attributed to a lack of providers and access to services.
This project seeks to explore attitudes and understanding of nurse practitioner students in the State of Mississippi regarding full practice authority. A survey will be electronically distributed to determine what is already known and understood …
Barriers To Preoperative Warming: Best Practice Guideline, Tyler Comans, Zachary Hays, Caleb Leach
Barriers To Preoperative Warming: Best Practice Guideline, Tyler Comans, Zachary Hays, Caleb Leach
Doctoral Projects
The lack of preoperative warming has a direct relationship to perioperative hypothermia complications which include, but are not limited to: increased infection rate, coagulopathies, and increased myocardial oxygen consumption; all contributing to poor patient and facility outcomes. Implementation of an evidence-based educational module with visual aid can potentially increase the utilization of active warming techniques in the preoperative setting by perioperative staff. The DNP Project investigated barriers to preoperative warming by perioperative staff at a large teaching hospital in the southeastern United States. Barriers were assessed by a voluntary survey sent to 87 perioperative staff members. Twenty-two surveys were completed …

Implementation Of A Pre-Anesthesia Take-Home Evaluation (Pathe) As A Means Of Process Improvement: A Best Practice Recommendation, Russell Gray, Hunter Brown, Trey Galloway
Doctoral Projects
The pre-anesthesia evaluation (PAE) is a vital component to anesthesia providers when choosing an appropriate anesthetic plan for patients requiring surgery. The PAE, pre-anesthesia risk-factor assessment, and provision of pre-anesthesia instructions are standards of care implemented in order to assess the patient’s likely outcome of surgery and anesthesia as well as stratify any known risk factors to optimize surgical/anesthetic outcomes. Any disruption in this process could potentially lead to decreased patient/provider satisfaction, reduced patient compliance with pre-anesthetic instructions, reduced patient safety, and unnecessary financial burden.
After the completion of a literature review, the need for a best practice recommendation was …

Synesthesia: Does It Have An Effect On Memory?, Elizabeth Evans
Synesthesia: Does It Have An Effect On Memory?, Elizabeth Evans
Honors Theses
Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon involving an inducer (a stimulus) and a concurrent (elicited response). For many years, scientists have striven to explain synesthesia and whether or not there are benefits to the people who experience it. In this study, nineteen participants were asked to complete a questionnaire in an attempt to see if their synesthetic experiences gave them advantages in the area of memory. The seven questions were given in a multiple-choice or text entry format, and the questionnaire was approved by The University of Southern Mississippi’s IRB before being sent out in an electronic format. The majority of …
Traits Of Character That Facilitate Formation Of Exemplary Nurses In Bachelor Of Science Nursing Programs, Jean Marks
Traits Of Character That Facilitate Formation Of Exemplary Nurses In Bachelor Of Science Nursing Programs, Jean Marks
Dissertations
Constructivist grounded theory methods were applied in this study to explore traits of character that facilitate the formation of exemplary nurses in Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) programs. Interest in this study was prompted by a desire to examine attributes beyond academics alone that contribute to the formation of excellent nurses. The intent was to promote clarity in describing these attributes for further scholarly discussion.
Framing this study was Aristotle’s doctrine of the golden mean (Aristotle, 350 B.C.E./1934). Operational definitions consistent with this doctrine were created for the concepts of character, character traits, and exemplary nursing practice. The concept …
Apneic Oxygenation: An Adjunctive Therapy For Laryngoscopy During Anesthesia Induction, Yaro Hoffman
Apneic Oxygenation: An Adjunctive Therapy For Laryngoscopy During Anesthesia Induction, Yaro Hoffman
Doctoral Projects
Endotracheal intubation is an essential component within the skill set of anesthesia providers. Rapid arterial desaturation remains a primary risk factor during laryngoscopy and intubation. The risk for hypoxemia exists because during endotracheal intubation, patients are apneic or hypo-ventilating (Wong et al., 2017). Apneic oxygenation (AO) has been advocated to attenuate hypoxemia during endotracheal intubation (Pavlov et al., 2017).
The aim of this project was to assess for any knowledge deficits regarding AO among anesthesia providers and assess the willingness of these providers to include AO into their current practice. The project investigator conducted an education session involving the …
Educating Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist On Malignant Hyperthermia Using An Objective Structured Clinical Examination, Ednita Street Fountain, Faith Sherman
Educating Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist On Malignant Hyperthermia Using An Objective Structured Clinical Examination, Ednita Street Fountain, Faith Sherman
Doctoral Projects
Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a low-frequency, high-impact event that many student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) may be unprepared to manage due to limited exposure in clinical practice (Hackl et al., 1990). Lack of preparation for dealing with such low frequency, high impact events can lead to unfortunate adverse events resulting in death (Hackl et al., 1990). Thus, students should be are prepared to handle these situations if an event should occur.
An objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is a structured method used to assess certain skills and underpinning knowledge required for practice (Harden & Gleeson, 1979). Students are allowed to …

The landscape of ethnicity is growing increasingly diverse. In 2017, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that by the time the 2020 Census is conducted, over half of the nation’s children will be of a minority group (U.S. Census Bureau, 2017). With this evolution in cultural variety comes a necessity to incorporate exposure and training of cultural competency into professional health programs. Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) are a key demographic to professional growth within the realms of cultural competence as related to the field of nurse anesthesia. Along with clinical skills and advanced knowledge, cultural competence should be equally developed. …
