Abstract
Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPI) can be costly for the hospitals and devastating for the patients. Most pressure injuries are considered preventable, but despite that a lot of Americans die from pressure injury related complications each year. Hospitals spend billions of dollars on pressure injuries which can be used for other treatments. A quality improvement project was created to address these concerns and improve patient care. There were 5 cases of HAPIs on the telemetry/stroke unit prior to the start of this project. Interventions were created to improve the outcome. After careful review of the related literature, HAPI prevention …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
It has been estimated that >160,000 adverse patient events occur each year in the United States because of patient or specimen identification errors involving the laboratory (Sandhu, et. al 2017). The overall effect of specimen labeling errors often leads to patient safety issues related to medication errors, misdiagnosis, and delays in care (Sandhu, et. al 2017). The Women’s Clinic (WC) an outpatient clinic located within a larger northern California acute care facility had noted a significant increase in the number of lab years in the last year. This clinic sees on average four hundred patients and collects hundreds of …

Cryolipolysis: A Guide For Primary Care Practitioners, Miryam Harper, Jane H. Lassetter
Faculty Publications
A desire for the ideal body image has influenced the development of a nonsurgical body-shaping procedure known as cryolipolysis. The purpose of this clinical feature is to inform nurse practitioners about the risks and benefits of cryolipolysis so they can educate their patients. Cryolipolysis is a safe, effective method of reducing small areas of unwanted fat. Adverse effects are minimal and include pain, redness, bruising, and swelling. Results are seen within 12 weeks, but long-term effects are unknown. There are contraindications, and it is relatively expensive; however, it may be a safer option than invasive surgery.

Just Culture: It's More Than Policy, Linda Ann Paradiso, Nancy Sweeney
Publications and Research
Any healthcare organization’s top priority is effective and safe care. Despite this, medical error is the third-leading cause of death in the US. Hospitals are imperfect systems where nurses have competing demands and are forced to improvise and develop workarounds. Errors rarely occur in a vacuum, rather they’re a sequence of events with multiple opportunities for correction. Clinical nurses can have a significant impact on reducing errors due to their proximity to patients. When errors are identified, the events and impact on safe care need to be shared. Just culture is a safe haven that supports reporting. In a just …

Nurse Anesthesia Program Administrator's Decision-Making In Determining Interventions For A Student Exhibiting Unsatisfactory Clinical Performance, Laura S. Bonanno
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this grounded theory study is to define the process that nurse anesthesia program administrators use to determine if a student nurse anesthetist’s unsatisfactory clinical performance warrants intervention by the program. There is little room for error in anesthesia practice as mishaps typically result in significant injury and death. Students who exhibit unsatisfactory clinical performance may pose an immediate risk to patient safety as well as a future risk if allowed to progress in the program. The lack of guidance in the form of clearly articulated expectations and processes contribute to the emotional strain nurse anesthesia faculty and …

The Lived Experience Of Recovery Following Transoral Robotic Surgery (Tors) For Head And Neck Cancer, Katharine Mahalik
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Ongoing advances in minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as transoral robotic surgery (TORS), has enabled select patients with head and neck cancer to receive treatment that results in less disfigurement and dysfunction compared with traditional approaches. While TORS research has focused mainly on functional surgical outcomes, a need exists to understand recovery following TORS from the patient perspective. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used to recruit patients who had recently undergone TORS at a major academic health system in northeastern US. Data were collected using audio-recorded telephone interviews and field notes and analyzed concurrently. Participants included 17 HNCS (12 …
Examining Depressive Symptoms Over Time In Women With Coronary Heart Disease, Sydney A. Buckland
Examining Depressive Symptoms Over Time In Women With Coronary Heart Disease, Sydney A. Buckland
Theses & Dissertations
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the number one killer of women in the US. Women also experience roughly twice as much depression as men, and depression in CHD is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Despite these facts, women continue to be under-represented in CHD research, and results by gender are not routinely reported.
Screening for depression in this population is problematic due to inconsistent inclusion of somatic symptoms on screening instruments and disagreement about appropriate cutoff scores.
This body of work clarifies the concept of depression in women with CHD, presents a systematic review of the longitudinal literature on …
